Ex-Falcons WR Damiere Byrd signs with Panthers

Ex-Falcons wide receiver Damiere Byrd has signed a contract with the Carolina Panthers

When the Falcons re-signed wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge earlier this week, it was a sign that Damiere Byrd would likely not be returning to the team in 2023. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed as much on Friday afternoon, reporting that Byrd has signed a contract with the rival Panthers.

Byrd, 30, returns to Carolina, where he spent five seasons after signing as an undrafted free agent back in 2015.

Byrd finished with 13 catches for 268 receiving yards (20.6 yards per reception) and two touchdowns for the Falcons last season. Atlanta has already signed free agents Mack Hollins and Scotty Miller, and the team could add another wide receiver in the 2023 NFL draft.

Our latest seven-round Falcons mock draft has the team adding Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Dell in Round 3.

Panthers sign WR Damiere Byrd

The Panthers got a little cheeky on Friday, as they announced a new deal with WR Damiere Byrd.

The Byrd has flown back to the nest.

As announced on Friday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers have signed  wide receiver Damiere Byrd. The 30-year-old speedster now returns to Charlotte, where he spent the first four campaigns of his NFL career.

That tenure began in May of 2015, when the University of South Carolina Gamecock was signed as an undrafted free agent. He first cracked the field in 2016, reeling in a 16-yard reception and taking a kickoff back for 31 yards in the team’s season finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

After wrapping that stint in Carolina, which was perhaps highlighted by his cheeky “butt drag swag” touchdown, Byrd spread his wings to Arizona in 2019. His career year would then come a season later with former Panthers pal Cam Newton in New England, where he chalked up bests in catches (47) and yards (604).

Byrd then moved on to the Chicago Bears in 2021 and the Falcons in 2022.

We’re taking a look at Bears pending free agents, recapping their 2021 season and looking to the future. Next up: Damiere Byrd.

Free agency is just around the corner, and Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has plenty of work to do with this roster. There are some important decisions he has to make about who to add to the current roster and which pending free agents to retain heading into 2022.

Looking ahead to free agency, we’re breaking down every Bears free agent’s 2021 season, including the team’s need at the position and predicting whether they stay or go in free agency.

Up next is Damiere Byrd. Byrd saw some time in all 17 games this season, proving that he can be a good, cheap option as a depth wide receiver. If the Bears want to bring him back as depth, he’d be an affordable option. But do they want him back?

8 pending free agents the Bears should consider re-signing in 2022

The offseason is in full swing, and we’re just over a month away from the start of the new league year and free agency. And the Bears have some important decisions to make when it comes to in-house free agents.

The Bears are slated to have nearly $30 million in salary cap space, but there are plenty of holes to fill on the roster for new general manager Ryan Poles. Perhaps some of those roster spots will be filled by some of Chicago’s in-house free agents, including some big contributors from last season.

Frame-by-frame of Bears WR Damiere Byrd’s insane 2-point conversion grab

We’re going frame-by-frame of Damire Byrd’s insane grab on the Bears’ game-winning two-point conversion.

The Chicago Bears gifted fans a 25-24 comeback victory over the Seattle Seahawks, which was made possible by wide receiver Damiere Byrd’s insane two-point conversion catch to take a one-point lead that Seattle couldn’t overcome.

Trailing 24-17 with 1:55 to play, the Bears orchestrated a six-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a Nick Foles to Jimmy Graham touchdown that brought Chicago to within one point of tying the game with just over a minute remaining.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy made a daring move — go for the win with a two-point conversion attempt. Nagy’s decision proved to be almost as impressive as Byrd’s catch, which had an unbelievably high degree of difficult.

You have to see this sensational catch to believe it.

The Chicago Bears mounted a last-minute comeback against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, where Nick Foles connected with Jimmy Graham for a touchdown and then completed a two-point conversion attempt to Damiere Byrd in a 25-24 victory to improve to 5-10 on the season.

With the Bears being a seven-point underdog to the Seahawks, they got the upset win on the road in Foles’ first start this season.

Even though the season has been over for a long time, this win has excited Bears fans. Regardless of how the season finishes, Chicago doesn’t have a first-round pick in 2022. Why not win as many games as possible to give the Giants a lower draft pick?

Here’s a look at everything we know about Chicago’s Week 16 win:

Studs and duds from Bears’ blowout loss to Packers in prime time

The Bears lost to the Packers 45-30 in yet another embarrassing performance on prime time. Here are our studs and duds from the defeat.

For the first 30 minutes, the Chicago Bears looked like they had plenty of studs playing as they were able to take a 27-21 lead against the Green Bay Packers into halftime. For the final 30 minutes, however, there were many more duds.

The Bears lost to the Packers 45-30 in yet another embarrassing performance on prime time. Now at 4-9, a losing season is guaranteed under Matt Nagy for the first time during his tenure as head coach. The 45 points allowed is the third-most in the rivalry and most since 2014.

To say this was a rollercoaster of a game is an understatement. Lead changes, special teams craziness, and everything in between with plenty of players involved in the action. Here are this week’s studs and duds from the Bears’ latest loss.

Bears receivers are finally showing off their speed vs. Packers

We’re finally starting to see the speed of the Bears receiving corps.

The Chicago Bears might just have one of the fastest receiver rooms in the NFL, although not many would know that considering Chicago’s passing game has been anemic this season.

But facing their hated rivals the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, we’re starting to see what that speed can do — and that’s not only score touchdowns but have an impact on the game.

Two of the fastest players on the Bears’ roster, wide receivers Jakeem Grant and Damiere Byrd, have scored Chicago’s three first-half touchdowns, where their speed has been the difference maker.

Grant scored on a 46-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the first quarter and added a 97-yard punt return touchdown in the second quarter, and this has somehow become the Jakeem Grant game.

After Justin Fields threw a pick-6, he responded with a touchdown drive that ended with a short pass to Byrd, who took it 54 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

The Bears not only rank among the worst offenses in the NFL this season, but their passing game is one of the worst. Aside from the run game, the offense has been an utter disaster.

That falls on head coach Matt Nagy, whose offense has gotten progressively worse with each passing year. The Bears might have a speedy receivers room, but the problem is Nagy hasn’t utilized them until now.
