Injury update for Cardinals after loss to Ravens

The injuries to OL Trystan Colon, RB Damien Williams and WR Michael Wilson are still being evaluated.

The Arizona Cardinals came out of their Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a couple of injuries. Head coach Jonathan Gannon gave an update on Monday about the injuries, although he didn’t have much information.

The three players brought up are still being evaluated.

“We’ll see how the next 48 hours go and how that progresses and how the week goes,” he said.

Offensive lineman Trystan Colon has a calf injury that caused him to exit the game on Sunday.

Running back Damien Williams has a foot injury.

Receiver Michael Wilson was seen going to the locker room late in the game. Gannon didn’t specify what his injury was but did say “he should be okay.”

The Cardinals’ first injury report of the week will come out Wednesday afternoon.

Chasing Ambulances

QB Matt Stafford – He was already playing through a hip injury and left the Cowboys matchup when his thumb hit a helmet. He remained sidelined with a taped thumb after they examined it in the locker room but the Rams would not make a statement about it and Stafford did not talk to the press. Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback currently on their roster. Stetson Bennett is on the reserve/non-football illness list but the Rams have not disclosed exactly why. If Stafford misses any time, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua will likely suffer a decline.

QB Kirk Cousins – He suffered what is feared to be a season-ending Achilles injury. For a team already missing Justin Jefferson, this is catastrophic. The only healthy quarterback on the team is the rookie Jaren Hall. Sean Mannion is on the practice squad and Nick Mullens is on injured reserve. At 3-4, do they give up and make do with what they have or do they try to acquire or trade for someone? The worst part is that Cousins likely takes the Minnesota passing game with him, impacting Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Jefferson when he returns.

QB Tyrod Taylor – The Giants quarterback suffered a rib injury and was brought to a local hospital. He was already replacing Daniel Jones who is out with a neck injury. The Giants are down to Tommy DeVito who entered the game and completed 2-of-7 passes for a net loss of one yard. The expectation is that the Giants will bring in free-agent quarterbacks though the shelves are rather bare. The Giants cannot afford to have yet another step downward in their passing offense.

QB Kenny Pickett – The Steelers quarterback left with a rib injury and the immediate concern is how quickly he will heal since the Steelers host the Titans on Thursday. Mitchell Trubisky will take the start if Pickett cannot play. More should be known  on Monday.

QB Desmond Ridder – Was evaluated for a concussion and did not return to the loss to the Titans. HC Arthur Smith said that Ridder was held out for health reasons and not as a benching. Taylor Heinicke took over and completed 12-of-21 for 175 yards and a touchdown. Barring new information, Ridder remains the starter and will play if healthy. Practices will indicate if Ridder or Heinicke are most likely to start against the Vikings this week.

RB Travis Etienne – He left with an ankle injury but later returned and scored a 56-yard touchdown on a catch. He is fine.

WR Kendrick Bourne – The Patriots’ No. 1 receiver was injured in the fourth quarter, holding his right knee in obvious pain. He was able to walk to the medical tent and was ruled out of the game. He is due to have an MRI on Monday and the hope is that it is just a sprained MCL.  DeVante Parker was hit helmet-to-helmet as well and is expected to be diagnosed with a concussion. That would be serious since he missed games due to a concussion in 2022. JuJu Smith-Schuster has been a disappointment since joining the Pats and had his own health issues. But he received more playing time after Bourne left and caught a three-yard touchdown on his only reception.

WR Drake London – The Falcons star wideout left the game and was looked at by the trainers. After visiting the medical tent, he was ruled out with a groin injury. London claimed that he was fine after the game, but he’ll be evaluated Monday and his status will be clearer later in the week. If he is out for the Vikings matchup this week,  Kyle Pitts, Jonnu Smith, Mack Hollins, and Van Jefferson would have to take up the slack but London is the difference-maker out of all receivers.

TE Darren Waller – Suffered a hamstring strain and left the game. His status will be updated later this week, but the Giants’ problems at quarterback are an equally troublesome development for Waller’s fantasy value.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

New starting quarterbacks – The worst injury situation appears to be Kirk Cousins and the situation they are in if he cannot play as expected. The Vikings are likely to bring in veteran quarterbacks who will carry some fantasy value, but watch what moves they make in the early week. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, so we’ll know quickly if they acquire any notable replacement.

QB Will Levis (TEN) – The 2.02 pick by the Titans in the NFL draft was the fourth quarterback selected. Levis took his first NFL start and threw for 238 yards and four touchdowns – three on deep passes to DeAndre Hopkins. Ryan Tannehill only totaled two touchdowns after six games. Levis has to be the ongoing starter. He became the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for four touchdowns in their first start.

RB Emari Demercado (ARI) – The Cardinals have turned to Demercado as the full-time back with 20 carries for 78 yards versus the Ravens on Sunday. He also caught one pass for one year. James Conner remains out for at least two more weeks and it could be longer since the Cardinals have not been very forthcoming about Conner’s prognosis.

TE Trey McBride (ARI) – The Cardinals placed Zach Ertz onto injured reserve and that left second-year McBride as the primary tight end. He responded well, leading all fantasy tight ends with ten catches for 95 yards and a score against the Ravens. McBride was drafted last year in the second round and this was the sort of development they were hoping to see.

TE Taysom Hill (NO) – The Swiss Army knife of the Saints already scored last week on five rushes for 18 yards and gained 50 yards as a receiver. Against the  Colts, Hill ran for 63 yards and two touchdowns on nine rushes and caught a 14-yard pass. He’s always been inconsistent, but that’s two straight fantasy-relevant performances. He has been shifted to being a quarterback on some depth charts but remains a tight end on many.

RB Miles Sanders (CAR) – He missed Week 6 with a shoulder injury but had a bye to help him heal. He was removed from the injury report and was expected to resume his role as the starter, along with Chuba Hubbard. But Sanders only carried twice for no yards, and Hubbard ran 15 times for 28 yards.  Sanders is far too risky to merit a fantasy start until he can prove to be healthy and a part of the game plan.

WR Demario Douglas (NE) – The Patriots rookie hasn’t scored and topped out in Week 7 with four catches for 54 yards. Against the Dolphins, he ended with five receptions for 25 yards but it was notable because his seven targets were three more than any other Patriot receiver. And Kendrick Bourne and DeVante Parker both were injured last week.

RB Gus Edwards (BAL) – He’s been consistent with around 50 yards in most games and scored only in Week 2. But these last two games, Edwards has his best performances of the year. In Week 7, he ran in a score, rushed for 64 yards and caught an 80-yard pass. For Week 8, he produced a career-best three touchdowns on his 19 rushes for 80 yards and caught two passes for 14 yards.  Jackson dialed back his role as a rusher for these last two weeks and Edwards has feasted.

WR Tyreek Hill (MIA) – He currently has 1,014 receiving yards and is the first player to do that in their first eight games in the last 62 years of NFL history. He is on pace to gain 2,154 yards on the season.

Germany Alert! – The NFL returns to Europe this week with their first-ever game in Germany. The notable part is that they are showcasing the NFL by playing the Dolphins and Chiefs. That means there are a lot of fantasy team owners who need to get up well before 9:30 AM EST (6:30 AM EST) and check their lineups or risk missing an inactive.

Huddle player of the week

Credit: Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

CeeDee Lamb (DAL)  –  The Cowboys No. 1 receiver already gained 117 yards last week, and he upped that mark against the Rams when he caught 12 passes for a career-best 158 yards and two touchdowns. After a three-week lull in production, Lamb is turning in big stats for multiple weeks and just led the NFL in fantasy points.

Cardinals elevate CB Bobby Price, RB Damien Williams to play vs. Seahawks

Price played special teams last week and Williams had 36 rushing yards and a catch in Week 6.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a few roster moves on Saturday, leading up to their Week 7 road divisional game against the Seattle Seahawks. In addition to activating safety Budda Baker from injured reserve to return to the starting lineup and rookie cornerback Garrett Williams from the non-football injury reserve, they also elevated a pair of players from the practice squad.

For the second consecutive week, they elevated running back Damien Williams and cornerback Bobby Price.

Last week, against the Los Angeles Rams, Price played 18 snaps on special teams. He had a special teams tackle and recovered a fumble.

Williams played 13 snaps on offense. He had eight rushing attempts for 36 yards and also had one eight-yard reception.

He will likely have a similar role against the Seahawks.

Cardinals elevate RB Damien Williams, CB Bobby Price for game vs. Rams

The Cardinals elevated two players from the practice squad in Week 6.

The Arizona Cardinals announced some roster moves on the eve of their Week 6 matchup on the road against the Los Angeles Rams. They elevated two from the practice squad.

They elevated running back Damien Williams and cornerback Bobby Price.

Running back Corey Clement had been elevated the last two weeks.

With James Conner out with a knee injury and on injured reserve, the Cardinals will turn to Keaontay Ingram and Emari Demercado for the running game. We will see what role Williams ends up having. They also have Tony Jones, but only having been with the team since the start of this week, he might not be active.

Price will likely play special teams. The Cardinals will not have safety Jalen Thompson, as he injured his hamstring.

Antonio Hamilton will play in the slot in Thompson’s place, so they will use three cornerbacks rather than three safeties.

The Cardinals and Rams kick off from SoFi Stadium Sunday afternoon at 1:25 p.m. Arizona time.

Cardinal elevate Corey Clement, Ben Stille; Damien Williams remains on practice squad

RB Damien Williams, signed earlier in the week, remains on the practice squad this week.

The Arizona Cardinals signed veteran running back Damien Williams earlier in the week, making many believe that he would get an opportunity to play in Week 5 with Keaontay Ingram dealing with a neck injury,

That will not be the case.

The Cardinals announced their Saturday roster moves, elevating two players from the practice squad. Williams remains on the practice squad.

Instead, they elevated defensive lineman Ben Stille and running back Corey Clement.

With Jonathan Ledbetter ruled out of the game, the Cardinals needed another body on the defensive line. This is the second time Stille has been elevated. He was also elevated to the active roster and played against the Dallas Cowboys.

Clement is elevated for the second straight week, suggesting that Ingram might miss a second straight game.

He played only special teams last week with Emeari Demercado getting all the backup running back reps behind James Conner.

The Cardinals and Bengals kick off Sunday afternoon from State Farm Stadium at 1:05 p.m. Arizona time. The game will air on FOX.

Cardinals add RB Damien Williams to practice squad

The Cardinals have added veteran running back Damien Williams to the practice squad. He worked out for Arizona in July.

The Arizona Cardinals have added some depth to the team at running back. They announced the signing of veteran running back Damien Williams on Thursday.

Williams was brought in back in July for a workout.

Williams has been in the NFL since 2014 and is 31 years old.

Last season, he played in only one game for the Atlanta Falcons before being placed on injured reserve.

Before that, he spent a season with the Chicago Bears, two with the Kansas City Chiefs and four with the Miami Dolphins.

He is 5-foot-11 and 221 pounds. His best season was 2019 when he rushed for 498 yards and five touchdowns. That season, he added 196 yards and four touchdowns in the postseason, en route to a Super Bowl championship for the Chiefs.

Backup running back Keaontay Ingram is battling a neck injury. He missed the game last Sunday and did not practice on Wednesday.

If Ingram isn’t on track to play on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, Williams potentially could be used as a backup, getting elevated from the practice squad.

Ballers & Busters: Raiders preseason Week 3 vs Cowboys

Raiders Ballers & Buster for their preseason finale vs Cowboys

One more chance for many hopefuls on this Raiders training camp roster to show what they can do, both for the Raiders coaches as well as the rest of the league.

How did they do in this final exhibition? Let’s take a look

Ballers

WR Kristian Wilkerson

With one, and possibly two, receiver spots up for grabs on the Raiders roster, Wilkerson set out to prove he was worthy of it. And he put his best foot forward, catching 10 passes for 122 yards. No other Raiders receiver came with seven catches of his total and only one receiver came within 100 yards of his receiving total.

K Daniel Carlson

Went three for three in the game, including a 62-yarder and a 50-yarder. That 62-yarder was an upright splitter which looked like it would’ve been good from 70 yards. What a weapon.

RB Damien Williams

He doesn’t just have a great first name, he was breaking off big yards in chunks. He had two of the top four longest plays by the Raiders in this game and the only two runs that went for over ten yards. He had the Raiders’ only touchdown in the game on a 24-yard burst. Then he had a 20-yard run to lead out the third quarter that led to a field goal. He finished with 54 yards and a TD on six carries (nine yards per carry).

G Jordan Meredith

On both of those long Williams runs, Meredith laid a key block. His only mistake in the game was being flagged for holding.

DT Nesta Jade Silvera

Early in the second quarter, he had a run stuff for one yard on third and two. A few plays later he made the stop on a three-yard run. His best play may have come on a 16-yard catch in which he raced into the secondary to make the tackle. His five combined tackles led all Raiders defensive linemen. He added a QB hit as well.

Honorable Mention

QB Aidan O’Connell — Another efficient day for the rookie. Though he was unable to throw any touchdowns, he didn’t turn the ball over either.

WR Cam Sims — Had another fantastic grab in this one. This time reaching up high to pluck a 22-yard grab up the left sideline. The skills he has shown as a jump ball target are valuable.

Cardinals work out former Chiefs RB Damien Williams

The Cardinals could use a veteran running back and brought one in on Monday before the start of training camp.

The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp on Tuesday and might have a new running back.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Cardinals brought in former Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams for a workout.

The Cardinals have only one proven running back on the roster currently in James Conner with a few young, unproven players and a journeyman special teams player.

Williams is 31 years old and has been in the league since 2014.

Last season, he played in only one game for the Atlanta Falcons before being placed on injured reserve.

Before that, he spent a season with the Chicago Bears, two with the Kansas City Chiefs and four with the Miami Dolphins.

He is 5-foot-11 and 225 pounds. His best season was 2019 when he rushed for 498 yards and five touchdowns. That season, he added 196 yards and four touchdowns in the postseason, en route to a Super Bowl championship for the Chiefs.

Reunion with RB Damien Williams makes too much sense for Chiefs

The #Falcons have waived RB Damien Williams from injured reserve and a reunion with the #Chiefs makes too much sense.

The Kansas City Chiefs might be able to strengthen their running back room even further for the stretch run.

On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons released veteran RB Damien Williams from their injured reserve list. Williams was placed on IR back in September with a rib injury, but according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he’s both rested and healthy.

Williams spent three seasons in Kansas City and was pivotal during the team’s Super Bowl LIV run. He amassed 1,127 scrimmage yards on 214 touches with 13 total touchdowns across the 2018 and 2019 regular seasons with Kansas City. The veteran running back previously held the franchise record for the most career postseason touchdowns (10), which all came between the 2018 and 2019 playoffs.

The now 30-year-old running back didn’t play during the 2020 NFL season, opting out amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chiefs would ultimately release him ahead of the 2021 free-agency period.

Williams appeared in just one game for the Falcons this season recording only one carry for two yards prior to his injury. In 2021, he played in 12 games with the Bears, carrying the ball 40 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 16 passes for 103 yards and a score.

While Williams hasn’t been able to produce at the same level since leaving Kansas City, he’d be a great emergency option for the team in this final stretch of the regular season and the postseason. His versatility to be able to contribute as a runner, a pass-catcher, a pass-blocker and even on special teams would make him an extremely valuable asset. There’s also something to be said about his chemistry with Patrick Mahomes, even if it’s a few years removed.

The only question surrounding a potential addition is the NFL’s waiver wire. As one of the winningest teams in the league, the Chiefs don’t have great waiver priority. They’ll need a lot of teams to pass on claiming Williams in order to place a successful claim. That’s probably a little easier to accomplish with a player who is being waived from injured reserve. It’s also a possibility that no one claims Williams, which could allow the team to add him to the practice squad.

Falcons place RB Damien Williams on injured reserve list

The #Falcons placed injured RB Damien Williams on the injured reserve list Saturday.

The Atlanta Falcons placed running back Damien Williams on the injured reserve list Saturday. Williams, who signed a one-year deal back in March, suffered a rib injury during the team’s Week 1 loss to the Saints.

Even though he returned to the game, Williams missed all three days of practice this week and was ruled out of the team’s Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

The veteran running back will be out a minimum of four weeks and his absence assures fans a chance to see rookie Tyler Allgeier, Atlanta’s fifth-round draft selection out of BYU. Allgeier rushed for 23 touchdowns last season, which was tied for most in the FBS.

The Falcons take on the Rams this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET. Los Angeles is currently a 9.5-point favorite over Atlanta in Week 2.
