Assuming that Doncic plays Tuesday, MAVERICKS (-110) is an enticing wager. Los Angeles won’t have George available and the Clippers could announce that F Kawhi Leonard is out at any moment while the team has lost 6 straight games.

Against the spread

Being that I took Dallas to win on the road, MAVERICKS -1.5 (+100) is the bet. Once again, I would only wager on this spread if Doncic is active for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road meetings against the Clippers. As for the Clippers, they are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

Over/Under

UNDER 220.5 (-112) feels like the correct choice in this game with how these teams play. Both of these teams are bottom 10 in pace and both teams will be missing multiple key contributors on Tuesday.

The Under is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings between the Mavericks and the Clippers.

The Dallas Mavericks (9-6) travel to Staples Center Sunday to take on the Los Angeles Clippers (9-7). Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Mavericks at Clippers odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

Set to have back-to-back games against each other, the Clippers will host the Mavs two straight games, the second being Tuesday. That said, the Mavs could be without Luka Doncic, which doesn’t seem baked into the spread yet.

With that in mind, I’d likely wait until the MVP candidate’s status is announced before betting if you’d like to wager on Dallas. The Mavericks are 7-8 against the spread and 5-9-1 on the over/under. Doncic missed the team’s last two games, losing to Phoenix both times.

As for LA, they’ll continue to be without Kawhi Leonard, which has forced Paul George to step up. He has been playing at an MVP-caliber level as well, averaging 26.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game this season.

They could become a greater favorite if Doncic is ruled out. However, despite its two losses, Dallas has played well without out their best player on the court.

PASS on the money line.

The Mavericks are too talented of a team to bet the Clippers at -140, especially considering news of a potential Doncic absence could spike this well into the -200s.

Even without the guard, the Mavs have talent by the name of Jalen Brunson, Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr., making -140 not a great bet. At the same time, without knowing his status, the +115, which seems to assume Doncic will play, isn’t worth it either.

Against the spread

BET on the CLIPPERS -2.5 (-112). This is especially good value if Doncic misses as they lost to the Suns by 7 and 8 without their best player on the court.

The Clippers may not have the best record in the West, but they do rank 7th in net rating.

The Mavericks are down to 22, meaning they play extremely inconsistent for a team that’s 9-6. For example, even the 9-8 Trail Blazers have a positive net rating. Both their offense and defense are below average this season.

The Clippers, a team who has the second-best defensive rating, should limit the Mavs easy opportunities, especially considering they also rank atop the league in opponents free throw rate. The Mavs rank 7th in three-point attempts per game.

They rely on their three. The Clippers hold the 7th best opponents effective field goal rate. Overall, this will be a matchup of a short-handed Mavs against a lethal defense.

I’m going with the team that has proven to be more consistent this season and backing them with ease. I’d get this spread now before a potential Doncic announcement pushes it to around 6 or 7.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the UNDER 213.5 (-108).

The Clippers strength is their defense, and that may limit what Dallas wants to do offensively. As noted, the Clippers have the league’s lowest opponents free-throw rate. Getting to the line won’t be easy.

That said, while the Clippers may play at the sixth-fastest pace in the NBA, the Mavericks rank 22nd in pace. They certainly don’t run at the same level and that’s regardless of if Doncic plays or not.

Dallas jumped out to a 1-0 series lead primarily because PG Luka Dončić had his way with L.A.’s defense. He messed around and put up a 31-10-11 triple-double.

L.A.’s two All-Stars SF Kawhi Leonard and SG Paul George had respectable performances, but the Clippers shot just 27.5% from behind the 3-point arc as a team and were outscored in all four quarters.

PASS even though I “like” Dallas plus the points because I just cannot see the Mavericks (+240) stealing the two games in L.A.

I do envision this series going at least six games like it did last year but the Clippers (-300) should find a way to even the series.

Against the spread (ATS)

BET the MAVERICKS +7 (-110) for 1 unit because there’s a narrative floating around NBA circles that the Clippers are going to assign Leonard to guard Luka and that’s just not the way L.A. has operated since acquiring him.

Maybe late in the game or later in this series Leonard will step up to the challenge of mitigating Doncic’s effectiveness but since L.A.’s 3-point shooting was the best in the NBA this season, I think the Clippers try to outscore the Mavs.

In Game 1, Clippers SF Nicolas Batum guarded Luka the most and Leonard spent the fourth-most time defending him. If the Clippers’ major adjustment from Game 1 is to improve their 3-point shooting then I don’t trust L.A. to win by a margin and cover the spread.

Furthermore, we have a “Pros vs. Joes” situation in the betting market as a majority of the money is on the Mavs to cover while more bets have been placed on the Clippers, according to Pregame.com.

Typically, it’s wiser in sports betting to follow the money and fade the crowd of people.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the OVER 215.5 (-110) for a half unit only because I think the Clippers’ role players knock down a few more threes than in Game 1 and the pace picks up this game.

I would go lightly if betting this total because the Under cashed in five straight Mavericks-Clippers meetings and four of those games went Under by at least 21 points.

Ultimately, I prefer the Over because of my read L.A. makes more offensive adjustments than defensive ones and the Clippers never have an answer for Doncic.

The 4-seed Los Angeles Clippers host the 5-seed Dallas Mavericks in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series Saturday at Staples Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Mavericks-Clippers odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

This is a rematch of last postseason’s Western Conference first-round meeting that the Clippers won 4-2 with both teams’ stars going off.

L.A.’s Kawhi Leonard averaged 32.8 points per game on 63.9% true shooting (.538/.294/.855), 10.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game with a plus-20 net rating.

Dallas’ Luka Doncic was incredible in his first-ever postseason, averaging 31.0 points per game on 59.6% true shooting (.500/.364/.656), 9.8 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game.

The Mavs won and covered two of their three regular-season meetings with the Clippers and Dallas’s 51-point beatdown vs. a Kawhi-less L.A. team on Dec. 27 was one of the most lopsided victories in the NBA this season.

PASS even though I expect L.A. to win because Dallas took the series six games last postseason when the Clippers were an even bigger series favorite (-630), according to SportsOddsHistory.com.

In fact, the Mavs were leading second-half of Game 1 last year before Kristaps Porzingis was controversially ejected after picking up his second technical foul.

Against the spread (ATS)

“LEAN” to the MAVERICKS +6 (-110) for a half unit because we are seeing “reverse line movement” in the betting market, Dallas plays better against top-10 offenses—which both teams have—and the Clippers underperform vs. bad defenses.

For instance, according to pregame.com, 60% of the money wagered has been on the Clippers’ to cover, but oddsmakers have made L.A. cheaper. It’s generally a red flag when the House knocks point(s) off the more popular side.

Also, according to CleaningTheGlass.com, L.A. is 10-13 overall with a minus-0.6 points per 100 possessions vs. teams in the top-10 of offensive efficiency and a minus-3.3-points ATS margin (ranked 24th).

However, Dallas is 13-10 with the second-highest points per 100 possessions differential (plus-4.8 points) vs. teams in the top-10 of offensive efficiency and the best ATS margin (plus-5.9 points).

Finally, the Mavs have the 22nd-ranked defensive efficiency (CleaningTheGlass.com), but the Clippers are ranked 28th in ATS margin (minus-2.5 points) vs. teams in the bottom-10 of the league in defensive efficiency.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the OVER 217.5 (-115) for a half unit because all the steam on the Under is giving us the best of the number, and the Clippers have turned more into an offensive team under first-year head coach Ty Lue.

The market has bet the Mavericks-Clippers total down from the 223-point opener to the current number, and my inkling is to fade that kind of line movement.

Also, my read is that since the Clippers are the best 3-point shooting team in the Association, they are more willing to sag on defense and be goaded into a shootout.

I’m sure most Clippers fans are hoping to see the perimeter defense they envisioned when acquiring Kawhi, Paul George and Patrick Beverley, but L.A. hasn’t been that lock-down on defense since last season.

Dallas fell to 0-2 after getting rolled by the Los Angeles Lakers 138-115 on Christmas. Preseason MVP favorite Luka Doncic had a strong performance – putting up 27 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists – but the Lakers did whatever they wanted on offense. Los Angeles shot 56% from the field, including 19-for-39 from three, and out-rebounded the Mavericks 53-27.

The Clippers also played on Christmas as it exacted a little regular-season revenge on the Denver Nuggets in a 121-108 win. Los Angeles was phenomenal offensively, shooting 55% for the game and 50% from behind the arc, but the major storyline was the injury of All-Star Kawhi Leonard. He was accidentally elbowed in the jaw by teammate PF Serge Ibaka when both were going for a rebound and Leonard was bleeding from his mouth as he exited the game in the fourth.

Last year’s first-round Mavericks-Clippers playoff series was tied 2-2 before Los Angeles blew out Dallas by double-digits in Games 5 and 6 due to, in part, to masterful Kawhi Leonard performances.

The Claw scored 33 in Game 5 and 32 in the Game 6 clincher, but Kawhi most likely will not suit up for this Mavericks-Clippers game. It’s a good spot for Dallas to get a little revenge on the Clippers without their best player. I’d only BET MAVERICKS (+165) lightly because Dallas plus the points is a better play.

Against the spread (ATS)

We are going to buck the head-to-head trends and, regardless of how good Paul George looks, BET MAVERICKS +4.5 (-105) for 1 unit. The Mavericks have covered only twice in its last 10 games against the Clippers and is 1-4 ATS in their five in Los Angeles.

However, Dallas probably looked for its games against the Clippers first when the regular-season schedule was released because of that chippy playoff series with Los Angeles last year.

Porzingis was ejected from Game 1 for a sketchy flagrant foul call, Morris and Luka got into some beef after Morris seemingly targeted Luka’s sprained ankle in Game 5 then Morris was ejected from Game 6 for a flagrant foul 2 on Luka.

BET MAVERICKS +4.5 (-105) just in case they cannot win outright.

Over/Under (O/U)

Though it has only been two games, it appears that the biggest change in style implemented by Clippers’ new head coach Ty Lue is upping Los Angeles’ volume of 3-point attempts. Last year’s Clippers team was 16th in 3-point rate while this season they rank No. 3.

Also, Dallas has started a little slow this season offensively, but the Mavericks were the most efficient offense in the NBA last season. The potential absences of Kawhi and Morris are going to weaken Los Angeles’ defense.

TAKE OVER 228.5 (-115).
