Cowboys News: Free agency options and recruiting with the new CRO

Potential additions at running back and wide receiver, Micah Parsons’ recruiting trail and Odighizuwa’s steady rise in the trenches. | From @CDBurnett7

Heading into the meat of the 2023 offseason, wide receiver sits at the top of the Cowboys’ list of needs. There’s an Ohio State star who could fill the hole while Jerry Jones has been vocal about the continued interest in free agent Odell Beckham Jr.

Elsewhere in the offense, running back could see a complete change next season. Tony Pollard is the most likely candidate to receive the franchise tag while Ezekiel Elliott’s time in Dallas could be coming to an end. If either are true, there’s a plethora of promising running backs in the draft.

On defense, Leighton Vander Esch’s 2022 stopped the bleeding at linebacker but he may be heading to another team. Micah Parsons has made his preferences heard in the recruiting other star players. Will the rise of Osa Odighizuwa translate into year 3? This and more in News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Big boards, free agent rankings and tough decisions

What’s next at running back and offensive tackle, Turpin looking to build on his impact and how The Triplets almost broke up early. | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys’ 1990s dominance centered around the triplets on offense, and it turns out one of the group was close to leaving to join a gunslinger in Miami. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case but now Dallas is trying to return to that level of success.

There were positive steps taken in 2022, even if the pain of a divisional round exit remains. The Cowboys entrusted wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to become a star, and he did, while relying on Terence Steele turned out to be a great decision before his season was cut short by injury. Beyond Steele, the offensive tackle room has some decisions to make. What’s next for Tyron Smith and will Dallas begin to look for a future replacement?

Looking at the draft, wide receiver and cornerback seem like the biggest holes but will they be the first-round selection? The futures of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard are up in the air, so the prospect of drafting Bijan Robinson intrigues some, especially due to his connection to Texas. More on potential first rounders, the biggest free agents and how a special teams star looks to expand his impact in 2023 in the latest News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Free agency decisions loom as Dallas is well represented at Honors

The Cowboys’ historic night at NFL Honors, a looming free agent decision and a look at the biggest needs in the draft. | From @CDBurnett7

The 2023 NFL Honors show was a memorable one for the Cowboys, with a slew of Dallas players past and present receiving the highest honors. After a shock of disappointment last year, Demarcus Ware is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2023. None other than Jerry Jones was the one to present him in the emotional moment.

Soon after, quarterback Dak Prescott received the Walter Payton Man of the Year award and delivered an inspiring speech about mental health and honored his family that drives him forward. On the other side, linebacker Micah Parsons finished second in DPOY voting while somehow managing to not receive a first-place vote.

Looking into the offseason, the Cowboys will decide whether or not to keep their safety core together with Donovan Wilson a free agent next month. In the draft a month later, Dallas looks to clean up the wide receiver and cornerback positions early while there’s some sleepers to keep an eye out for. Here’s the latest Cowboys News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Rookie crash, daunting tasks as backups splash

The illness strikes again in Dallas, worries with an injured defense and how the matchup with the Eagles has lost its luster. | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys’ matchup with the Eagles may not be the heavyweight bout it once appeared to be. Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts won’t start and Gardner Minshew is set to take the reins on Christmas Eve. This could be a trend for Dallas, who after getting the best of the best competition all season, suddenly won’t when attempting to tune-up for the playoffs.

Yet again, sickness strikes the Cowboys’ locker room and it’s another defensive star coming down with an illness. The cornerback room is an open competition as the regular season closes, and it could be a look at the position’s future in Dallas if someone steps up as the boundary corner across from Trevon Diggs.

Kellen Moore’s offense has faced criticism, and turnovers from quarterback Dak Prescott loom over the organization.  A top Dallas rookie is okay after a car crash, panic levels in Week 16 and more in News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Pollard the Pro Bowler, offensive line is simply mid in 2022

There’s heavy Cowboys representation at the Pro Bowl, but struggles on the boundary and in the trenches need to be resolved. | From @CDBurnett7

The 2022 Pro Bowl rosters are out and the Cowboys, alongside their division, dominated the NFC selections. While offensive lineman Zack Martin leads the way in his eighth appearance, a couple players make their debut for Dallas. One of those is running back Tony Pollard, who has turned into a gamebreaker in his contract year.

Quarterback Dak Prescott has fielded criticism about the recent turnovers, but he’s not discouraged heading into a Christmas Eve duel with the Eagles. The game has lost its momentum in recent days and the status of quarterback Jalen Hurts is big on both sides. The Cowboys may even prefer a healthy Hurts, so they can test their team against an opponent at full strength.

The boundary players on both sides of the ball have become an issue for Dallas. While wide receiver Michael Gallup’s struggles have limited the offense, injuries at corner force a competition to remove the mouse in the house for opposing offenses to target. Here’s the latest Cowboys News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Picking apart Prescott’s penchant for picks, 2023 mock draft fun

A full accounting of what went wrong vs the Jags and Prescott’s turnover uptick in 2022. Also, a look ahead to the Eagles and the ’23 draft. | From @CDBurnett7

Ahead of the Christmas Eve rematch with the Eagles, the health status of Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts looms over all national discussion. He’s not the only injury concern though, as they have other who are walking wounded and Dallas brings their own list of dinged-up players to the party as of the first official walkthrough.

Dallas will have their signal caller though, but which version of Dak Prescott will show up? A deep dive into Prescott’s sky-high interception total is on deck. Looking back at the Jaguars loss, the injuries on defense are prompting Dan Quinn to react quickly in the efforts to find a solution at cornerback. On the other side of the ball, key mistakes on third down sealed the Cowboys’ demise in Jacksonville, which Philadelphia acknowledged in petty fashion. Take a look at the first 2023 mock draft from K.D. Drummond, a full analysis of the game-ending play and more looking towards the Eagles in the latest News and Notes.

News and Notes: Cowboys a top-5 deepest roster? Bears game will test

A look at how the Dallas DL will impact the game, and other key matchups. Also, how is such a failure of a roster this deep per the experts? | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys were once the favorite team of NBA superstar Lebron James, but he recently announced the team’s handling of social justice stances drove him away. James is still a fan of multiple Dallas players, including linebacker Micah Parsons, who the struggling Bears offensive line is tasked with limiting. Their run-heavy style will have to be efficient or else Justin Fields may be running from pressure all day.

Looking further into the Chicago matchup, the potential absence of running back Ezekiel Elliott looms large as the Cowboys will rely on Tony Pollard to take over the production as the feature back. Also the DL should feast on QB Justin Fields unless Chicago changes one key thing. Looking forward, the Longhorns are full of NFL talent and Tim Lettiero broke down the names Dallas should consider for the 2023 draft. Week 8 matchups to watch, the value of Dallas’ depth and more in Friday’s News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Quinn’s stunting, Cover 2 defense (yes that’s right) gets its flowers

The defensive mindset rising in Dallas is thanks to the ever-evolving mastermind in the booth, plus Prescott’s return updates as Week 6 approaches. @CDBurnett7 collects the news and notes.

Smart Cowboys fans can only pray the band stays together when it comes to the coaching staff. On Wednesday, two different highly respectable outlets took on the task of explaining just what has been working so well for the Dallas defense on a schematic level. Dan Quinn has done a phenomenal job, but how is he putting these players in position to succeed?

With six sacks through five games, Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons earned a weekly reward during a season that’s trending towards more hardware for the sophomore star. Parsons’ success is one of many stories on a defense that has changed the narrative for a franchise dictated by offensive success throughout the Tony Romo and most of the Dak Prescott era.

Prescott’s absence has played into it, but Dallas is relying on the run game heavily with 164 yards on the ground against the Rams, catering to the defensive mindset instilled by Mike McCarthy and Dan Quinn. While Cooper Rush is keeping the ship above water, Prescott is moving closer to a return, but it likely won’t be this week as the 4-1 start allows the Cowboys to be careful with his return.

Offensive lineman Jason Peters delivered a brutally honest compliment about his former team as the Sunday night matchup of Dallas and Philadelphia looms large with fanbases ready to decide who owns the NFC East early in the season. Injury reports for both teams, including Prescott and Peters’ status, and more in the latest News and Notes.

Cowboys News: How to watch, why to watch, what to watch for on Sunday

Storylines for the pair of Cooper Rush and Noah Brown, unanimous picks for Sunday and the Dallas defense getting stronger by the day. | From @CDBurnett7

Entering Week 4, there’s history at stake for Dallas quarterback Cooper Rush. Now 3-0 as a starter, he could become the first quarterback for Dallas to win their first four NFL starts. Part of his success can be credited to wide receiver Noah Brown, who is making headlines of his own as a veteran stepping up into a real receiver role for the Cowboys.

On the defensive side, Dan Quinn’s unit hasn’t put up the turnover totals from 2021 but the sack numbers are much higher, showing how versatile this defense can be as they get better week by week. For Washington, they have plenty of defensive talent themselves. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reiterated how strong the Commanders front seven is, and noted how containing them will be key.

Cowboys News: Manufactured storylines from the big man himself

The awaited return of a key receiver, Jerry Jones stirring the pot, the Cowboys injury status and more in the latest News and Notes. | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys, like all other NFL teams, would rather the conversation not center around injury status this early in the season. But Dallas doesn’t have the power to manipulate this particular narrative. Fortunately, after spending the first two weeks as a limited participant, wide receiver Michael Gallup was a full-go on Thursday. The Cowboys may have WR2 back in the fold for Monday Night Football.

On the other side of the coin Dallas had six key players held out of practice, however the cold which kept linebacker Micah Parsons out doesn’t seem to put his availability in question for the Monday matchup with the Giants. The Cowboys have owned the matchup for years but are avoiding overlooking the opponent, especially with every win’s value increased due to quarterback Dak Prescott’s absence.

The strong performance of backup Cooper Rush presented a classic moment for team owner Jerry Jones to find another way to strike up conversation about his billion-dollar investment; inventing a potential QB controversy. Details on Jones’ comments, Parsons’ value all over the field and more in the latest Cowboys News and Notes.
