Watch: Brian Kelly and Daelin Hayes discuss Big Ten on the Today Show

Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly and lineman Daelin Hayes joined the Today Show to discuss the future of the 2020 fall football season.

Notre Dame’s Head Coach Brian Kelly and defensive linemen Daelin Hayes joined the Today Show this morning and touched upon many topics including the Big Ten’s decision, the enhanced testing the Irish have done, long-term health risks and more.

Brian Kelly supports Ian Book and Notre Dame Captains Desire to Play

Notre Dame’s SWAT captains released a statement Monday night that their head coach quickly got behind and supported. Read it all here.

Each day over the last four or five has brought news in regards to the 2020 college football season being played.

One day it was the MAC cancelling its season while yesterday it was the Big Ten shutting its doors, only to have them reopened a few hours later.

Notre Dame’s 2020 SWAT Team captains released a statement Monday night that essentially begged for a chance to play football this fall.  You can read the complete statement below:

The SWAT Team leaders are the captains for Notre Dame’s off-season workouts and members include: quarterback Ian Book, offensive linemen Liam Eichenberg, Robert Hainsey and Tommy Kraemer, defensive lineman Daelin Hayes, Kurt Hinish, Ade Ogundeji and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, tight end Brock Wright, linebacker Drew White and cornerback Shaun Crawford.

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly endorsed his players desire to play shortly after they released the statement Monday night.

It by no means guarantees anything in terms of games being played but it’s certainly nice to see a coach going to bat for his players wishes like this.

I don’t know if there will be college football this year as this morning Massachusetts has cancelled their season, which brings the total now to 27 of the 130 FBS teams.  However, at least the idea of college football in 2020 isn’t going away without a fight at this point.

Notre Dame’s Daelin Hayes named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Notre Dame star defender Daelin Hayes is more than just a football player and the community service award has taken notice.

What would a day this week be without celebrating Watch List Season 2020?

Yesterday it was kicker Jonathan Doerer that saw his name added to a watch list and today we see defensive lineman Daelin Hayes get his name added to an awards list.

Hayes along with 113 different football players from FBS schools were named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List on Thursday.

The Wuerffel Trophy, named for former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel of Florida, is college football’s award for community service, essentially the college version of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award that the NFL annually hands out.

Hayes has been very vocal about fighting for social justice as he helped put together the recent peaceful march and rally on Notre Dame’s campus on Juneteenth.

Notre Dame’s Drue Tranquill, now of the Los Angeles Chargers, won the Wuerffel Trophy in 2018.

For more information on the Wuerffel Trophy check out their web-page.

Daelin Hayes Speaks at Notre Dame Juneteenth Rally

Like many locations around the country, Notre Dame served as a location for a Juneteenth rally Friday.

Like many locations around the country, Notre Dame served as a location for a Juneteenth rally Friday. Among the participants in South Bend were members of the Irish football team, coaches from every varsity sport and the Rev. John Jenkins, the university’s president. About 1,500 people gathered on a 90-degree day.

Irish defensive end Daelin Hayes was among the speakers to the crowd. He talked about him and his fiancee visiting Lincoln Elementary School in South Bend twice a week to work on conflict resolution with students there. He hoped his teammates would be involved with community outreach programs, too.

Hayes and offensive lineman Max Siegel also called for Notre Dame to mandate cultural competency classes for the university’s incoming freshmen. While Hayes spoke out against discrimination and called for the university to diversify across the board, Siegel shared some unsettling stories involving his race in the classroom and around campus.

Notre Dame is known for building and fostering leaders. These may be among its important ones yet. Change already is happening, and it’s starting with young people like these.

Irish Overrated? CBS Gives Thoughts on Notre Dame’s ’20 Season Outlook

In a season series preview, CBS Sports looks at what is in store for the Irish this season.

The fact that Brian Kelly seems to falter against top teams is fair, since 2010 he has led the Irish to a 21-20 record in Top 25 matchups. So, Ben Kercheval’s assessment of that portion of the program is accurate, but that is in the past, this is about what is in store for the Irish in 2020.

There were multiple high-level players who left the Notre Dame program since it’s win over Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl just a few months ago. Kercheval feels like the biggest losses include TE Cole Kmet, WR Chase Claypool, RB Tony Jones Jr. and DE Julian Okwara. Each of them have brought their talents to the NFL.

What’s interesting is the fact that Kercheval mentions the firing of Offensive Coordinator Chip Long as a loss. Long was replaced by Tommy Rees prior to the bowl win, was seen as a excellent recruiter, but Kelly couldn’t mesh well with his play calling, especially in the aforementioned top matchups. While the offense under Rees was fantastic in Irish wins, averaging 38 points, the fact that Long couldn’t get more, 13.5 points per game, in losses irked Kelly and let to a change. The jury is still out on Rees, this season will be a big test for the first full year as offensive coordinator for the former Irish QB.

We all know about the returning Notre Dame stars, Kercheval sees QB Ian Book, OT Tommy Kraemer and WR Braden Lenzy as the offenses top returning playmakers. Pretty interesting that the other starting tackle, Liam Eichenberg isn’t mentioned, but Lenzy to me is the key. The leading returning receiver had just 11 catches last year, a number that will surely see a rise this coming season. The rising junior needs to break out for the Irish offense.

Defensively CB TaRiq Bracy and DE Daelin Hayes will be the key assets according to Kercheval. I think he didn’t pick the right players as Notre Dame’s key returning defenders. Safety Kyle Hamilton and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah would have been my choices. It’s not a knock on Bracy and Hayes, they’re great players in their own right, I just believe that Hamilton and Owusu-Koramoah will have larger impacts.

Rees was named a fresh face, along with Northwestern WR transfer Bennett Skowronek and incoming freshman RB Chris Tyree. Spot on with Tyree, as the newest face to the Irish running back room might be needed to contribute immediately. Skowronek was a captain for the Wildcats last year, bring leadership to a position group that will need it. There are plenty of others that could have ended up in these spots include transfers safety Isaiah Pryor and CB Nick McCloud or freshman TE Michael Mayer. Each of them could play big roles for the Irish in ’20.

Kercheval sees the floor as 9 wins for the Irish, otherwise disappointment will reign in South Bend. A favorable schedule should result in double digits wins, so Kelly’s streak of 3 straight 10-plus win seasons should extent to a 4th once the season is played.

Notre Dame Football: Ogundeji Returns for Fifth Year as Expected

Ogundeji joins Daelin Hayes, Isaiah Foskey, Ovie Oghoufo, and Justin Ademilola in a strong defensive end grouping that should be a strength for the 2020 Fighting Irish.

It wasn’t shocking news to say the very least but it was news nonetheless on Wednesday when Notre Dame defensive end Adetokunbo Ogundeji announced he will be returning to Notre Dame for a fifth season.

Ogundeji came on late for Notre Dame this year, recording 4.5 sacks on the year and all of them coming in the final three games of the year.  Two of those alone came against Boston College in what was to me the best game we’ve seen him play.

We’ve got official word from Ian Book, Alohi Gilman, Tony Jones, Jr. and now Ogundeji.  We still await Cole Kmet’s official decision after he statedhe planned on returning for his senior year during the fall.

Watch: Let Daelin Hayes Get You Pumped for Camping World Bowl

If you’re not excited for the Camping World Bowl I get it. I’m not anywhere near a level I’d be at if it was Notre Dame playing in the Cotton or Orange Bowl but that’s not changing.

This is the last time we’ll see Team 132 together and I’m hoping they go out victorious.

It’s a weird place to be.

A decade ago if you told me I’d feel at all disappointed as a lifelong Notre Dame fan after a 10-2 regular season I’d have thought you were nuts.

The program was broken, ten wins hadn’t happened in a single season since 2006 and had happened just twice in the sixteen seasons previous.

Now we sit and perhaps things aren’t where we ultimately want them to be, but guess what, they’re still in a pretty good spot compared to where they were.

Next year will come and the same expectations for a push to the College Football Playoff will be the expectation, but we’ll discuss that over the next eight months because we’ll have plenty of time to.

For now let’s enjoy this last ride together for 2019, a team that could probably be described like they did Apollo-11:  A successful failure.

It’ll be a long eight months until we get to see this team in action again.

If you’re not ready for the game after my pep talk I’m hardly surprised, so I’ll let senior defensive end Daelin Hayes take over from here.

Go Irish.

Beat Cyclones.
