The Clemson Insider has learned that one of Clemson’s top quarterback targets in the class of 2024 has locked in a visit for next week.

Willis (Texas) five-star DJ Lagway informed TCI Friday morning that he will be at Clemson on June 2. He’ll have the chance to throw in front of Brandon Streeter and Clemson’s head coach Dabo Swinney on the second day of Swinney Camp.

When we spoke with Lagway earlier this month, he indicated that a scholarship offer from Clemson could come when he visits campus in June. He’s had those conversations about a potential offer dating back to when he visited in April.

“That was a conversation we had from the very beginning since I got there when I got down there on campus when I went to Coach Swinney’s house,” Lagway said. “It’s just the way they run things, they just want to keep the process smooth and keep the way they’ve been doing things.”

“That would be huge,” he continued. “That would be a blessing to have an offer from Clemson and all that good stuff. It would change a lot with my top five.”

In addition to Clemson, Lagway is looking to visit Oklahoma, Oregon and probably Alabama.

“I’m just trying to go see all the out-of-state schools that I’m interested in,” Lagway said, “just to give them a chance as well. Because, I’m really open to anything and everything, just to see where I feel like I’m at home and where I’m most comfortable.”

Talented TE impressed by recent Clemson visit; set to return for Swinney Camp

This promising tight end prospect from the Tar Heel State has seen the recruiting process pick up during the spring evaluation period.

Clemson is one of the many schools that have made spring stops by Weddington High School (Matthews, N.C.), the alma mater of Tigers rising sophomore running back Will Shipley.

One prospect from Weddington on the Tigers’ radar is Brooks Mauk, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound tight end in the class of 2024.

“The recruiting process has really picked up,” Mauk told The Clemson Insider recently. “We’ve had a lot of coaches stop by our spring practices. We have a lot of talent on the team and a winning tradition that attracts the college coaches.”

Along with Clemson, ACC schools such as Wake Forest and Virginia Tech are showing interest in Mauk.

The rising junior plans to participate in the three-day session of the Dabo Swinney Football Camp from June 10-12 and is looking to leave an impression on Clemson’s coaching staff.

“I’m hoping to show the coaches that I’m coachable and fit their culture,” he said.

Mauk describes himself as a tight end who can not only contribute as a pass-catcher and weapon in the passing game, but also impact the running game with his physical style of play and ability to pave the way for running backs as a blocker.

“I have good hands and can stretch the defense,” he said, “but my biggest strength is probably my physicality. I really like to block, hit and open holes.”

Mauk traveled to Tiger Town earlier this spring, making his first visit to Clemson on Saturday, March 5, and came away impressed after his experience on campus.

“The player-first culture and atmosphere really stood out,” he said, reflecting on what he remembers most about the visit. “The coaching staff is dedicated to helping the players grow on and off the field.”

In addition to Clemson, Mauk will be camping this summer at Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, UNC Charlotte and possibly Navy as well.

Volunteer State athlete with connection to Tigers, ‘can’t wait’ to camp at Clemson

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a fast-rising Volunteer State athlete, who told us that Clemson wants him to come up for camp this summer, as the Tigers have talked multiple times with his coaches.

Clemson started reaching out to Webb School of Knoxville (Tenn.) four-star athlete Markeis Barrett’s coaches at the end of his sophomore season.

“They want me to come down, so they can show me around their facilities and also their campus,” Barrett said. “I am also going to camp there (this summer). From what my coaches told me, is that they want to build a good relationship with me throughout their recruiting process with me and also they want me to come down as much as I can.”

With that, Barrett will participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 2.

“I’m ready to camp,” he continued. “I can’t wait to camp at Clemson.”

This won’t be Barrett’s first visit to Tiger Town. He made a game-day visit last season and was in attendance for Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State on Oct. 30, 2021.

“I enjoyed the atmosphere and I got to talk to Coach Dabo Swinney,” Barrett said. “That was amazing. It was like a dream come true.”

Barrett chatted with Tyler Grisham for a little bit there, but Clemson’s wide receivers coach had to obviously prepare for the game. Getting to camp at Clemson this summer will allow Barett to further build his relationship with Grisham.

“That makes me want to play receiver there,” he said regarding receiving interest from WRU.

While Barrett is listed as an athlete on every major recruiting service and plays both sides of the football for the Webb School, he imagines that he’ll likely work out at the receiver position at most camps, including Clemson, this summer.

While Barrett will play wherever a school at the next level envisions him, his preference would be to play the wide receiver or slot.

If Barrett can earn an offer from a school like Clemson, he didn’t hesitate to say that the Tigers would immediately earn a spot at the top of his recruitment.

“When it’s all said and done, they would be in my top three,” he said. “If they offer me, then it’s gonna be like they fully want me because they don’t offer a lot like that.”

In addition to Clemson, Barrett mentioned programs like Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, LSU and Colorado as the schools currently recruiting him the hardest. He plans to camp at Virginia Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and maybe Arkansas and Kentucky.

Right now, Barrett is ready for things to pick back up after he participates in some camps this summer. It’s only a matter of time before things start to heat up for Barrett, who currently holds offers from schools like Arkansas, Marshall, Vanderbilt and Eastern Kentucky.

Last season, Barrett played more outside receiver for the Webb School but has since transitioned to the slot. He also plays defensive back and the plan is for him to play both sides of the football again during his junior campaign.

“I’m explosive, I’m fast, I can make plays on both sides of the ball,” Barrett said when asked to describe himself as a player. “I’m quick and I’m shifty.”

He likes to watch former Clemson and current Green Bay Packers wide receiver, Amari Rodgers, who is from the same hometown as Barrett. Rodgers is someone that Barrett looks up to and he’s often raved about Clemson and the relationships and atmosphere, as well as the education that the program provides.

“I talk to him a lot,” Barrett said. “He tells me what I need to do, what I don’t need to do. This summer, I look forward to working with him when he comes back.”

Barrett (6-1, 170) ranks as the No. 33 athlete and No. 3 prospect in the state of Tennessee for his class, per 247Sports.

Suiting up for Clemson would be ‘dream come true’ for speedy local WR

Clemson is showing interest in this talented local wide receiver who holds double-digit scholarship offers and grew up a fan of the Tigers.

Greenville (S.C.) High School’s Tyler Brown – a speedy 6-foot, 170-pound rising senior – has been in contact with Tigers receivers coach Tyler Grisham, who invited Brown to compete at the Dabo Swinney Football Camp next month.

“They’re definitely interested in me as of right now,” Brown told The Clemson Insider. “They just want to see me in action, so I’ll probably be at the camp on June 2nd.”

Grisham was at Greenville High to watch a practice earlier this week, though Brown was unable to practice due to a toe injury and the fact he’s getting ready to take part in the SCHSL State Track & Field Championships this weekend in Columbia.

However, Brown will have the opportunity to show Grisham what he can do next month when he works out at the Swinney Camp.

“Really just to showcase my game-breaking speed,” Brown said of what he hopes to put on display at camp, “and how I can get in and out of my routes, most definitely, and my catching skills is what I really want to showcase on the 2nd.”

Along with Clemson, Brown is looking to camp at schools such as North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech and South Carolina.

As a junior last season, he recorded 1,034 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.

“I’m definitely a speed guy that can play slot or outside and just move around, open up the offense,” he said, describing himself as a receiver.

Furman, Gardner-Webb, Mercer, Bryant, Tennessee Tech, ETSU, Jacksonville State, Brown, Harvard and Dartmouth have offered Brown, who is also drawing interest from schools like North Carolina, Duke, Coastal Carolina and App State in addition to Clemson.

Brown comes from a family of Clemson fans, so the fact he’s getting interest from the Tigers certainly means a lot to him.

“That’s definitely a big thing of mine,” he said. “That’s always been a family team of mine. So, that’s just a dream.”

Asked what stands out the most to him about Clemson’s program, Brown pointed to the family aspect of it.

“The way Dabo treats all of his players, all of his assistant coaches, and it’s just a great environment down there,” he said.

As of now, Brown says “everything’s pretty wide open” in his recruitment.

“Just taking it slowly and letting it all come to me slowly,” he said. “But all the schools that have offered me so far are great schools and showing me a lot of love – to my family and me as well.”

Brown grew up rooting for Clemson and has long imagined suiting up for the Tigers, so if he were to receive an offer from Clemson and have the chance to make that dream a reality, it would be a very big deal for him.

“Definitely a dream come true, man,” he said. “Like I said, playing in the backyard… Can’t really imagine anything else like that.”

This highly touted defensive line prospect will be back on campus at Clemson next month and hopes to make an impression on the Tigers’ coaching staff.

Mountain View High School (Lawrenceville, Ga.) four-star defensive end Justin Greene – the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman in the 2024 class, per 247Sports – plans to compete at the Dabo Swinney Football Camp the weekend of June 10-12.

“I’m pretty excited to (get) up there,” Greene told The Clemson Insider. “I haven’t had the chance to show the coaches what I can do with this new put-on size.”

Greene – a 6-foot-4, 245-pound rising junior – was previously in Tiger Town on March 12 and came away very impressed after his visit to Clemson.

“The facilities really stood out to me,” he said, reflecting on the visit. “Easily the best ones I’ve been to.”

Kentucky and Michigan State gave Greene his latest Power Five offers last week, joining schools such as Boston College, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest on his offer list.

Should Clemson pull the trigger on an offer to Greene moving forward, it would put the Tigers among the top trio of contenders in his recruitment.

“Clemson would be one of my top three offers,” he said.

Greene named Wake Forest and Ohio State as other schools he’s planning to travel to in June.

He is ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 30 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class regardless of position.

Peach State QB feels he connected with Streeter at Swinney Camp this summer

A talented Peach State signal-caller hit the road this summer to visit plenty of colleges across the country, including a stop at Clemson.

Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb 2023 four-star quarterback Malachi Singleton traveled to Clemson’s campus back in early June for the Dabo Swinney Camp.

Singleton caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his current recruitment and what his impression was of Clemson and Brandon Streeter based on his visit to Tiger Town earlier this summer.

“It was a great experience just seeing the facilities and meeting all the coaches in person,” Singleton told TCI. “There was a lot of good QB talent there, so just seeing where I stack up and stuff, it was a great overall experience.”

According to Singleton, Clemson’s quarterbacks coach told him that he “had a great day.”

“He just told me to keep grinding and don’t be surprised if I got an offer after my junior season,” Singleton added. “He was just telling me to stay patient and stuff like that.”

Singleton’s contact with Streeter has been limited, but he’s under the impression that Clemson will reach out, come Sept. 1.

Nonetheless, he was left impressed by Streeter’s coaching style

“I thought he was a really good coach,” Singleton said. “He gave me a lot of good feedback when I was throwing. I thought we connected.”

In addition to Streeter, Swinney’s infectious energy also caught Singleton’s attention.

“He’s like that high-energy guy,” he added. He always keeps a smile on his face. I thought he was really cool.

As he enters his junior campaign, Singleton is taking a patient approach as far as his recruitment is concerned. He’s really trying to focus on his season right now.

Singleton is primarily looking to show everybody that he can throw the ball, he said. He currently ranks as the No. 22 quarterback in the country for the Class of 2023, per 247Sports’ recruiting rankings, so Singleton wants to exhibit his arm talent to the rest of the country.

He mentioned schools like Florida, Georgia, UCF, Miami and Georgia Tech among schools that are standing out in his recruitment.

Singleton is looking for the perfect fit, somewhere they can use his talent to the best of his abilities.

What are Singleton’s strengths on the field?

“I feel like my strengths are that I can spread the defense, I can throw, I can run,” Singleton said. “I feel like the defense is never in the right spot.”

Singleton is a dynamic quarterback prospect, who brings a balanced approach. He’s someone who can make the big plays but can also perfectly execute a 10-play drive as well.

While he doesn’t model his game after anyone in particular, he certainly takes bits and pieces from quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Cam Newton.

Alabama QB: Clemson ‘somewhere that I’d want to be’

Among the many standout signal-callers that made their way to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Camp earlier this summer was Christopher Vizzina, a dual-threat quarterback from Briarwood Christian Upper School in Birmingham (Ala.).

The Class of 2023 prospect has been on Brandon Streeter’s radar for a while and traveled to Tiger Town to work out for Clemson’s quarterbacks coach and the Tigers back in June.

Vizzina (6-4, 200) recently caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his current recruitment and what he’s been hearing from Streeter/Clemson as of late.

Vizzina tries to speak with Streeter at least once a week. Sometimes they speak twice a week, but there’s a mutual level of busyness to go around as they both prepare for their prospective seasons.

“They’ve just told me that I’m going to be a real priority for them when my class rolls around for commitments and signing day and everything like that,” Vizzina said. “I know they’re really interested in me.”

Since formally meeting in person at the Dabo Swinney Camp earlier this summer, Clemson has continued to keep tabs on the Alabama quarterback.

“Everybody knows what a Clemson offer means,” he said. “They’re committed to you. For them to offer me — if they were ever to — that symbolizes more than me being just a great football player. It’s more that they see you as a great person too and someone that benefits from the program as well.”

“When I went up there, it just felt like they were doing everything the right way and that it’s somewhere that I’d want to be like every single day,” Vizzina added. “All these coaches, they tell you what you want to hear and everything, but you really got to experience it.”

For Vizzina, Clemson was the “real deal” and who better to show him the ins and outs of the program, than Streeter?

“I love Coach Streeter. He’s really down to earth,” Vizzina said. “He’s known about me for a couple of years now. He just seems like a coach that would coach me every single day to be a better player, but at the same time, you’re with all these guys almost 24/7, so they’re going to teach you how to be a better man, one day a better husband, a better friend and a better teammate.

Vizzina really got to know Clemson’s quarterbacks coach during the Swinney Camp. He attended both the morning and afternoon sessions and got the chance to bond and learn from Streeter.

“Just from that and what he’s heard from my coaches and I guess my teammates and stuff, in his opinion, he feels like I’m a great fit for how they run things up there,” he said. How they have that family feel that’s so iconic, he feels like I’d be a great part of that.”

Vizzina’s heard from Streeter about coming back to Tiger Town for a game this season. He “absolutely” plans on making a game-day visit, if his schedule allows for it.

As far as his upcoming high school season is concerned, the junior quarterback knows what to expect now that he has two seasons of starting experience under his belt. And While Vizzina isn’t a senior yet, he almost feels as if he’s one because he’s really close with the grade above.

He’s not worried about stats. At the end of the day, the goal for Vizzina is to have fun and do whatever it takes to help his team win.

A massive offensive line prospect from the Volunteer State, originally from England, has made the rounds this summer visiting several schools since June 1 when the NCAA recruiting dead period was lifted – including Clemson.

Nashville (Tenn.) Franklin Road Academy four-star tackle Joe Crocker – a 6-foot-6, 310-pound rising junior in the class of 2023 – traveled to Tiger Town in June to compete at the Dabo Swinney Camp.

Crocker spent plenty of time with offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell and area recruiter Lemanski Hall while on campus.

“I enjoyed my time at Clemson!” Crocker told The Clemson Insider. “I camped and then was invited to stay and tour by Coach Caldwell and Coach Ski. My highlight was just being able to learn and talk to Coach Caldwell.”

Crocker and his family moved to Tennessee when he was in elementary school. He is originally from England but also spent time in Australia and Scotland before coming stateside.

Caldwell liked what he saw from Crocker at the Swinney Camp and hopes to get him back on campus for a game this season.

“Coach Caldwell was just telling me how well he thought I performed,” Crocker said, “and how he wants me to come back in the fall.”

The Tigers have not yet joined Crocker’s double-digit list of scholarship offers but have conveyed a message of patience to him regarding a potential offer.

“They also told me to stay patient with getting an offer as Clemson does it [the recruiting process] differently and waits to offer,” he said.

Crocker’s offer sheet currently includes Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Louisville, Michigan and others. He says his recruitment is “wide open” right now, though there are some schools he communicates most frequently with such as Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Virginia, Penn State and TCU.

Clemson is an offer Crocker covets and one that would give him a lot to think about after his great visit to campus last month.

“Definitely getting an offer from Clemson would be one that I would want and consider for sure!” he said.

“The family aspect and togetherness really stands out,” he added.

Crocker has also visited Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech and Penn State this summer. He plans to return to Tennessee this Saturday.

Clemson makes sizeable impression on big Tennessee OL

Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell has done his best to keep tabs on Class of 2023 offensive linemen, especially those that camped at Clemson this summer.

One that’s been on Caldwell’s radar is Alcoa (Tenn.) 2023 IOL Lance Wiliams, who has been in contact with Clemson recently. In fact, he was on the phone with Caldwell just the other day.

Williams (6-4, 300) caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his current recruitment and what he’s been hearing from Caldwell and the Tigers lately.

“I like him a lot,” Williams told TCI, regarding his relationship with Caldwell. “He’s a good coach and obviously Clemson doesn’t offer when you’re still young.”

Caldwell has told Williams to remain patient and that good things will potentially be ahead for the big Tennessee lineman.

He’s been made aware of how the Tigers go about their business and is certainly appreciative of their willingness to build those relationships from the get-go.

“Yeah, I do,” Williams said when asked if he likes Clemson’s recruitment style, “because I also want to be able to build a relationship with them. If I don’t have a good relationship with the coaches or something like that, then that wouldn’t be a good school to go to. But, I do have a good relationship with Coach Caldwell. I like him a lot and my parents like him a lot too.”

Williams visited Clemson earlier this summer and had an opportunity to participate in Dabo Swinney Camp, in addition to receiving some feedback from Caldwell.

“It was definitely one of the nicest places I’ve ever been to, I’ll tell you that,” he said.

According to Williams, Caldwell really liked what he brought to the table, especially during the camp sessions.

“He said for me still being young, I’m out there holding my own against them old guys that are already committed places and all that,” Williams said. “He’s said I’ve been doing pretty good.”

Williams describes himself as an aggressive, fast-moving player. Which is certainly unique for his size.

He worked out at both guard positions during his time at Clemson, but he starts at left guard for his high school team.

Williams can play every position on the offensive line, but his home at the next level will be as an interior lineman.

What’s really helped Williams stay in shape and improve his technique is wrestling. Just about every offensive line coach he’s connected with revels in the fact that Williams is a Heavyweight Wrestling State Champion.

Clemson, Kentucky and West Virginia were among Williams’ favorite visits this summer. He also visited Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Auburn.

Clemson has made a sizable impression on Williams thus far, as he’s still trying to just soak everything in.

“It’s definitely overwhelming, but I’m very excited to maybe have a chance to play there,” he said.
