Tennessee vs Purdue TransPerfect Music City Bowl Preview

Fans of great defense need not tune in.

Purdue star WR David Bell opted out, but the passing game that averaged 340 yards per game should still go off on a Tennessee secondary that was 103rd in the nation. The Boilermakers will run the ball once in a while just because it’s supposed to, but it’s going to be bombs away from the start.

Tennessee likes to run the ball, but second-leading running back Tiyon Evans surprisingly left, choosing to take his talents to Louisville. The high-powered offense should keep on rolling with one of the nation’s most efficient attacks, rolling up 459 total yards per game with an up-tempo style that doesn’t slow down.

The Vol defense that had so many problems throughout the season settled down late when the schedule got easier, but now it needs to crank up a pass rush to force the Purdue offense to rush a bit and get out of its dink-and-dunk style. Without Bell, the downfield plays will be harder to get.

Purdue’s defense was solid throughout the year – holding its own against everyone but Purdue and Wisconsin – but it’s without opted-out pass rusher George Karlaftis, the job of keeping down the speed and flash of the Vols.

College Football Daily Cavalcade: The American Athletic Conference has expanded by adding Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, UTSA, and UAB. What does it all mean? What’s next?

College Football Daily Cavalcade: American Athletic Conference Expansion

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

It had a dream to get bigger with a slew of Big 12 takes, but it ended up expanding with thoughts on Conference USA.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f1343a1wt7q817p7 player_id=none image=https://collegefootballnews.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Not that it applies to other areas of our world or anything, but sometimes, you take the win and move forward.

The American Athletic Conference expanded with UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA. What does it all mean? Here are 10 quick thoughts on the big move.

1. So now with these six, the American Athletic Conference, at least for football, will look like this when it all starts once they’re in – a specific date hasn’t been finalized.

Assume the league goes back to two divisions looking something like this …

East: Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Navy, Temple, UAB, USF

West: Memphis, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UTSA

2. Beyond everything else, it’s a happy day – at least for everyone other than Conference USA.

It’s a good business move for the American Athletic Conference in a take-the-win sort of way, and for the schools, this is massive.

It’s a step up from C-USA for Rice and North Texas, and it’s a giant validation for the other four schools.

3. Remember, UAB football was in a self-induced coma in 2015 and 2016.

It’s a minor miracle that it still has a program, much less it getting to have a moment like this.

Florida Atlantic football started from scratch under the late Howard Schnellenberger and joined the FCS world back in 2004, UTSA has only been in the FCS since 2012, and Charlotte is still new to football, becoming a major college program in 2015. Now they’re all in the American Athletic Conference.

4. It might have been a necessary business move for the American Athletic Conference, but it’s a gigantic step back to what was potentially on the table a few months ago. No program-shaming here, but UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA doesn’t move the national needle even a little bit.

5. There’s no replacing new Big 12 members Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF.

Think of expansion as Moneyball – the American Athletic Conference couldn’t replace Damon and Giambi. It has to hope that the six newly-added schools can add up to overcome some of the revenue hit. It won’t, but it’s a needed move to strengthen the league’s membership. But …

6. Things are a whole lot different than they were a few months ago.

When the Big 12 appeared to be mortally wounded with Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC, there was a real thought that the American Athletic Conference would go get Big 12 schools, not the other way around.

The AAC went from – at least in the sports media sewing circle – possibly pulling in West Virginia and maybe Iowa State and Oklahoma State to losing three of its biggest schools and adding five from Conference USA.

7. Again, not to dog the six programs coming in, but this cements the Mountain West as the sixth best conference in college football – at least until the Pac-12 wakes up.

The AAC landing Florida Atlantic gives USF a natural rival, and the state of Texas becomes more emphasized, but these six aren’t going to entice the big schools from the Mountain West to possibly flip leagues.

The AAC landing Big 12 schools wasn’t realistically going to work, but chatting up San Diego State – with the Pac-12 not claiming to be interested in expanding right now – and Boise State, and some of the others from the Mountain West in an attempt to become a giant national conference wasn’t crazy.

The six schools the AAC just landed don’t up the brand enough for the Mountain West schools to be interested.

8. Don’t assume this is slowing down.

At some point, the Big 12 will realize that going after USF – Tampa, rivalry with UCF, massive enrollment – makes a whole lot of sense, and the AAC hanging on to Memphis is a mild upset.

Conference USA still has a few attractive schools – most notably Marshall and Southern Miss. The American Athletic Conference might keep moving here, and going after FIU – to have three schools in Florida – might make sense.

9. So now what for Conference USA?

It just lost five of its 12 members, and others wanted to go, too – UTEP isn’t all that happy right now. That leaves FIU, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, UTEP, and WKU.

Raiding the Sun Belt would be an instant reaction, but the easier move might be to entice a few of the independents to join in. Adding Army, UConn and UMass would at least give the conference some bulk, but the big get – even with a whole slew of issues – would be Liberty. However, the Sun Belt is about to go hard after all the independents, too. And …

10. Get ready for some schools from the FCS world to start becoming factors.

James Madison, North Dakota State, and Sam Houston State are among several schools on the verge of stepping up. There’s nowhere else for the Sun Belt and Conference USA to go, so we might see as many as ten new schools in the FBS world in the near future.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f1343a1wt7q817p7 player_id=none image=https://collegefootballnews.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Give it one more week before this all gets right. So before you honk, and before you get all crazy about this week’s rankings, we totally acknowledge that …

Yes, these rankings ARE weird, and they’re wrong in a whole slew of ways. There’s a reason.

As always – to a point – we do our rankings like a conference tie-breaker. If there are multiple teams all tied for a division or conference race, there’s a way to do this where it breaks down into Team A beat Team B and Team D beat … blah blah blah.

Until this all settles down, that’s the only fair way to do this. You HAVE to respect the results, but that’s a problem when you have upsets like happened yesterday.

Stanford beating Oregon messed everything up, and Temple beating Memphis TOTALLY screwed up the rankings.

Here’s the problem. Temple beat Memphis, which means the Temple ranking is wrong, but for now it’s necessary.

The losses were to Rutgers and Boston College, so ranking the Owls behind those two isn’t a problem. However, Memphis beat Mississippi State. Mississippi State beat Texas A&M, Texas A&M beat NC State, NC State beat Clemson, Clemson beat Boston College, and Boston College beat Toledo, and …

In this case, we rank the teams based on overall schedules, results, and how good we think the teams are since other variables are involved.

However …

Stanford. Its win over Oregon throws everything into a tizzy because it lost to Kansas State to start the season.

Kansas State’s only losses are to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State – who are ranked higher – so for now, it has to be ranked higher than Stanford. Stanford beat Oregon, who beat Ohio State. Stanford’s other loss was to UCLA who just lost to Arizona State, but UCLA lost to Fresno State, who lost to Hawaii ….

So for right now, the Kansas State record and ranking is relatively clean, but that means Ohio State has to be ranked way, way, WAY too low. That’s going to change. We promise.

And then there’s Oregon State.

Minnesota beat Purdue, Purdue beat the Beavers, who beat USC, who hasn’t beaten anyone who matters in the higher end of the rankings, and Bowling Green beat Minnesota, and …

Again, this is a mess, but we get it all as close to the pin as possible.

Really.

Illinois (1-1) vs Virginia (1-0) Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The passing game continues to be okay even without starting quarterback Brandon Peters.

Rutgers transfer Artur Sitkowski stepped in and pulled off the win over Nebraska, and he threw for 266 yards and three scores in the 37-30 loss to UTSA – and his final throw was completed, but it was just out in the back of the end zone.

The Illini will get physical after getting shoved around way too much by the Roadrunners. The running game has options, the pass protection should be find, and former star quarterback prospect Isaiah Williams has emerged as a dangerous receiver.

Illinois has the parts, and it appears to just be getting them all together as the Bret Bielema era gets rolling.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia was able to do whatever it wanted in the 43-0 win over an overmatched William & Mary, but it should be able to move a bit against Illinois, too.

Nebraska just didn’t have any playmakers outside of QB Adrian Martinez, and it showed in the loss to the Illini. UTSA had veteran skill parts, though, and they all produced with a great balance and a strong day from the offensive front.

Virginia has the experienced quarterback in Brennan Armstrong coming off a light scrimmage, and the offensive line was solid in pass protection and got better as the game went on.

The Cavaliers might outpush the Illini.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois is an X factor.

It escaped with a win over Nebraska when it did everything possible to give the game away, and it couldn’t get control against UTSA at any time, but again, it’s looking like a team that could be a factor once everything clicks.

It’s not going to happen this week.

Virginia is hardly perfect, but the offense will be far steadier and far more balanced. Turnovers aren’t going to be much of an issue for either side, but the Cavaliers will be more efficient overall after needing a while to get going last week.

Broncos LB Justin Strnad (wrist) ruled out for season

Broncos linebacker Justin Strnad will undergo wrist surgery that will likely sideline him for the entire season.

[jwplayer CdAmc2Qo-ThvAeFxT]

Denver Broncos rookie inside linebacker Justin Strnad (wrist) will have surgery and miss the entire year, coach Vic Fangio confirmed after practice Monday. Strnad dislocated his wrist and had “other complications” that will end his season, according to Fangio.

Strnad (6-3, 238 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the fifth round of this year’s draft. During his time at Wake Forest, Strnad totaled 244 tackles — including 22.5 tackles for losses — eight sacks, four interceptions and 10 pass breakups.

If not for his injury, Strnad would have had an opportunity to feature on special teams and rotate in on defense this season. Strnad has experience playing safety and his coverage ability would have made him a likely candidate to sub in for Todd Davis in passing situations.

With Strnad now expected to miss the season, Justin Hollins, Josey Jewell, Josh Watson and Joe Jones will be competing for more playing time. Davis and Alexander Johnson are expected to serve as the two starters at inside linebacker.

After losing Strnad, Denver might consider bringing in another linebacker to add depth and competition. One candidate the team may consider is eight-year veteran Nigel Bradham, who was just cut by the New Orleans Saints.

BYU (24-7) vs. Saint Mary’s (25-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why BYU Will Win

There are few hotter teams in the country right now.

The Cougars have won nine straight – including a blowout win over Gonzaga – and beat St. Mary’s in early February.

What’s going right?

They’re hitting everything from the outside.

BYU leads the nation in three-point percentage, connecting on 42% of their shots with big performance after big performance over the last few months. Against Saint Mary’s the second time around in the 81-79 win, they hit 46% from the outside against a shaky D from the the perimeter.

BYU moves the ball around well, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it’s amazing at finding the open shot. However …

Why Saint Mary’s Will Win

The Gaels don’t make mistakes. They’re second in the nation in fewest turnovers, they don’t allow easy points, and in a game like this against a team like BYU, being able to shoot from three is massive.

BYU might lead the nation in accuracy from three, but Saint Mary’s is third.

The Gaels were able to win the first meeting 87-84 in overtime by doing more from three the outside and beating BYU at its own game. They were better at passing the ball around, they made more threes, and they pulled off the win.

So …

What’s Going To Happen

The team that shoots better from three will win.

BYU is a bit better at stopping the three than Saint Mary’s is. Expect a third straight nip-and-tuck battle between the two with a whole slew of momentum swings.

BYU will be just a wee bit better when it has to be down the stretch.

UTEP (1-9) vs. New Mexico State (1-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Can UTEP finally get another win? It’s been a rough eight-game run with a few tight battles, and no victories since beating Houston Baptist in the opener.

New Mexico State beat Incarnate Word for its first win of the season, but the offense hasn’t been consistent and the defense was getting hammered way too hard before dealing with the FCS team.

UTEP’s offense is miserable on third downs, there’s no pressure in the backfield, and it doesn’t have anything it can rely on offensively, but now it gets someone its own size.

New Mexico State dinks and dunks, UTEP takes more shots down the field, and when it comes to running games, it’s about dead even in mediocrity.

The biggest difference overall between these two bad teams? New Mexico State turns the ball over, and UTEP doesn’t.

This will come down to the mistakes, and the Aggies will make more of them.
