Texas A&M’s 2024 starting WR rotation could include a newcomer from the transfer portal

Could former La Tech WR Cyrus Allen end up starting for Texas A&M this season?

It’s fall camp for Texas A&M and new head coach Mike Elko, who has every chance to succeed during his first year with the program after inheriting a talented and experienced roster led by redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman.

Defensively, Elko and new defensive coordinator Jay Bateman feel that this unit should be the team’s strength, especially due to the program’s loaded defensive line with the return of Shemar Turner and Shemar Stewart.

In contrast, former Purdue defensive end Nic Scourton has a chance to become an immediate game wrecker as the Bryan, Texas native has returned home.

However, the offense will continue to take center stage on a national scale, as any success this season will depend on Weigman’s ability to move the ball down the field in the passing game under new OC Collin Klein’s scheme, needing to rely on a wide receiver corps that is relatively inexperienced.

In the video, junior WR Noah Thomas and senior WR Jahdae Walker were joined by a different third receiver in first-team reps, as GigEm 247’s Carter Karels noted that former Louisiana Tech WR Cyrus Allen was listed as the third starter, as the versatile speedster is coming off his career-high 778 receiving yards and four touchdowns during his final season with the Bulldogs.

Texas A&M’s passing offense needs more reliable downfield production with explosive WR Evan Stewart, who transferred to Oregon early in the offseason; Allen could represent that piece to the puzzle and provide Weigman with another dependable option on third down.

If this is the case, the wide receiver unit’s depth suddenly becomes much deeper than previously anticipated, with senior Moose Muhammad potentially rotating in.

Here are the Top 5 incoming offensive transfers to watch out for during spring football

Here are five of the incoming transfer portal members on offense for Texas A&M to watch during the start of spring football next month.

It may be early in the offseason, but Texas A&M’s spring football season is less than a month away, and all eyes will be on how new head coach Mike Elko and his impressive coaching staff will help the offense, especially quarterback Conner Weigman, take the next step in their development.

While Weigman is coming off his season-ending injury after just four games last season, it may take some time to readjust, meaning every offensive playmaker available, especially the veterans coming out of the transfer portal, must step up to make his help him reach his potential.

Gaining 22 experienced players from the portal this offseason, additions including wide receivers Cyrus Allen and Jabre Barber could be key contributors next season, with the chance to show out next month during the spring football period.

However, after Texas A&M’s horrific blocking last season directly resulted in multiple quarterback injuries, including Weigman’s, several newcomers in the trenches will also be players to watch next month.

Here are five offensive transfer portal players to look out for during the spring football period.

Former Louisiana Tech WR Cyrus Allen has committed to Texas A&M

Former Louisiana Tech WR Cyrus Allen has committed to Texas A&M out of the transfer portal.

Texas A&M and head coach Mike Elko have landed their fourth player out of the transfer portal, as former Louisiana Tech wide receiver Cyrus Allen has committed to the Aggies after spending his last two seasons in the Bayou.

Joining former Old Dominion WR Javon Harvey, Allen, who has accumulated 68 receptions, 1,278 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns since the start of the 2022 season, is dripping with potential in new OC Collin Klein’s speed-centric offense in 2024.

Allen’s commitment couldn’t have come at a better time after Sunday morning’s news that former South Alabama WR Caullin Lacy would transfer to Louisville after many believed that he would favorite to land in College Station. However, with two years of collegiate eligibility remaining, Allen, who stands at 6’0″ and 180 pounds, possesses the needed receiving traits to contribute as soon as next season.

Starting wide receivers Evan Stewart, Moose Muhammad III, Noah Thomas, and Jahdae Walker are expected to return, providing Allen an opportunity to help replace the production lost due to Ainias Smith’s departure to the 2024 NFL Draft. Allen is coming off his best season yet, recording 46 receptions for 778 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

Oregon extends offer to Louisiana Tech receiver Cyrus Allen

The Oregon Ducks have extended a scholarship offer to former Louisiana Tech wide receiver Cyrus Allen.

The Oregon Ducks made their first big splash in the transfer portal over the weekend, landing a commitment from former Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Now it appears that they are working to try and get some additional weapons around him.

On Monday morning, Louisiana Tech wide receiver Cyrus Allen announced on social media that he had received a scholarship offer from the Ducks. Allen entered the transfer portal a week ago, and has been going through the recruiting process since then.

Allen played for two seasons at Louisiana Tech, where he caught 68 passes for 1,278 yards and 8 touchdowns in 21 games. He is listed at 6-foot-0, 177 pounds.

Allen was a 3-star prospect in the class of 2021, rated as the No. 936 overall player, and the No. 136 WR in the class.

This is the second public offer that Oregon has made to a receiver in the transfer portal, with the other going to Mississippi State WR Zavion Thomas. However, there are several pass-catchers who I have been told the Ducks are in constant communication with in the portal, and working to get them to Eugene on visits.
