Oregon football game times announced for 2024 non-conference slate

The kickoff times for Oregon’s non-conference slate in 2024 has been announced.

This coming football season is going to have so many changes and one of the stranger ones as far as Oregon is concerned is playing the Oregon State Beavers in September and not in November.

Conference or non-conference, the Oregon-Oregon State game will always be one of the bigger games on the schedule and this year’s game, on Sept. 14, has a game time and a network.

The Civil War for 2024 will be on Fox with a great time of 12:30 pm for the kickoff. While it’s different, a daytime kick in the middle of September should provide for some great sunny weather and temperatures.

It’ll also be great for the Beavers to have a major network televise the game for their exposure as well. The rest of OSU’s home games, as with Washington State, will be on the CW Network.

Oregon also announced several other game times and networks as well.

The first game of the season against Idaho (Aug. 31) will be on the Big Ten Network at 4:30. In the very next week on Sept. 7, the Ducks host Boise State set for 7:30 on the streaming service Peacock.

Oregon’s first Big Ten game inside Autzen will be on a Friday, Oct. 4 against Michigan State on Fox at 6 pm. For their second Friday game, the Ducks will go to Purdue Oct. 18, also on Fox at 6 pm.

When the Ducks host Illinois on Oct. 26, the game time hasn’t been officially determined yet, but it will be either 12:30 pm, 1 pm or 4:30 pm.

All times are Pacific.

Promotions, new players and teams: What’s next for LIV Golf and what to expect in 2024

LIV will look similar when it returns to action in 2024, but there may be a few differences.

In 2023 LIV Golf expanded its schedule and added new countries to its list of stops. A few new players were added and teams began to bring in sponsors and hire staff. Hundreds of millions of dollars were passed around.

Now that the season is over, with a transfer period looming, what’s next for 2024? More of the same.

The LIV Golf League prides itself on its adaptability within professional golf’s stagnant ecosystem. The upstart circuit backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund can change course quickly, like a speedboat, while other tours tend to labor with their movements, like cargo ships.

Certain aspects of LIV’s product are fundamental to what they want to be: teams, an international schedule, 14 events, the shotgun start. LIV officials believe the current product is operating at just 20 to 30 percent of its potential.

The eight-event series in 2022 proved there was a market for LIV, and LIV proved it had a product to take to market. The inaugural 2023 league season showed how the team concept can be (at times) compelling, and even commercially attractive. With 22 events in its wake, LIV’s hand is on the throttle and pushing forward into the future. But how long will it survive professional golf and its current choppy seas?

From new players (and maybe even teams) to broadcast innovations, here’s what to expect when LIV Golf returns to action in 2024.

Masters fans thought a ‘CW’ comment by Jim Nantz was a subtle jab at Brooks Koepka and LIV Golf

Jim Nantz wasn’t able to help but give a seemingly very silly wink towards the whole saga.

Jim Nantz has been anchoring the Masters coverage for CBS since 1989. He certainly has a solid command of his vocabulary and descriptions of the game.

He’s also, very obviously, aware of the startup LIV Golf league funded by the Saudi government. It appears he’s equally aware of the struggles LIV has found in trying to secure a television broadcast deal — let alone draw in viewers.

LIV Golf is currently airing tournaments on The CW. So when LIV star and Masters leader Brooks Koepka landed one of his shots on the crosswalk at August National on Sunday, Nantz wasn’t able to help but give a seemingly very silly wink towards the whole saga.

And golf fans had a field day with Nantz’s comment.

LIV Golf reports 3.2 million viewers for opening event in Mexico, a stark difference from early reports

More people watched LIV Golf’s opening event than previously thought, according to the circuit.

The Sports Business Journal shared the estimated LIV Golf Mayakoba and PGA Tour Honda Classic viewership from last weekend, and the early reports didn’t paint a pretty picture for the rival circuit.

On Friday morning, LIV Golf shared some new numbers that tell a different story.

Using iSpot, a TV ad measurement and analytics company, as well as CW and LIV Golf internal data, the upstart circuit financially supported by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund reported an audience of 3.2 million viewers across all linear and digital platforms for its season-opening event in Mexico. With its new TV deal, LIV airs in every U.S. market via CW affiliates and Nexstar stations and reported 1.6 million viewers on Saturday and 1.3 million viewers on Sunday.

LIV’s report also stated an average linear viewership domestically in the United States of more than 537,000, which it claims is more than the current season viewership average of the MLS (343,000), NHL (373,000) and the 2023 Australian Open men’s tennis final (439,000).

It’s easy to make jokes about some of the programming on the CW, but LIV airing in every U.S. market was key for its development in 2023. If accurate, the reported numbers are another step forward, but let’s not forget this was LIV’s first event of the season, not to mention it compared its viewership to the season averages of three of the least-watched major sports in America.

That said, according to Nielsen, the CW’s weekend primetime national ratings were up 24 percent compared to the network’s weekend season-to-date average. With Friday’s opening round only available via live stream, LIV reported a 40 percent month-to-month increase in downloads of the CW app, as well as 350,000 views over its new app, LIV Golf Plus.

Long story short, more people reportedly watched the opening event than previously thought. Now LIV needs to keep them watching.
