Alabama Morning Drive: Recapping a busy weekend in recruiting

Alabama hosts yet another impressive weekend of official visits.

Good Monday morning, Tide fans! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone enjoyed their Father’s Day weekend and was able to spend some time with all the father figures in your life.

Despite it being a holiday weekend, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama had a busy weekend when it comes to recruiting. Several of the nation’s top prospects were in town over the weekend for official visits. Coach Saban and the staff even took the time to extend some offers to prospects outside of the 2023 class.

Over the next few minutes, we will present you with some of the best tweets from several of the prospects over this past weekend.

Without wasting too much time let’s just dive right into the meat of the article.

Top Kentucky QB has ‘awesome’ experience at Clemson camp

Among the standout quarterbacks who had the chance to showcase their talent on the fourth day of Dabo Swinney Camp on June 11 was Cutter Boley — a 6-foot-5, 200-pound rising sophomore gunslinger from Lexington (KY.) Christian Academy.

“It was awesome,” Boley told The Clemson Insider regarding his camp experience. “I love working with Coach Streeter. His personality and the way he coaches is awesome. He’s very detailed, which I like. He’s not very vague and you can really tell that he knows what he’s talking about with everything he teaches. He’s been around the game a long time and he’s coached a lot of QBs.

What type of feedback did Boley get from Clemson’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach?

“A lot of good and then a lot of teaching points with my arm slot, my footwork and stuff like that,” Boley continued. “He was just saying that he loves me and that he loves my ball and he loves how I throw. He said that I’m still young, that I have time to develop and there’s some things I need to work on.”

Boley was appreciative that he was able to take away some things from his time at Clemson. He wants the camp experience to be fun but also wants there to be a level of learning and understanding of how to become a better quarterback. And for that, he’s grateful that Streeter was more of a teacher and less of an evaluator.

For Boley, it wasn’t just Streeter’s teaching methods that stood out. He was also impressed with how the rest of Clemson’s coaching staff conducted themselves during this past Saturday’s camp.

“All the coaches really, just the people around the program,” he said. “All the coaches, no two of them are saying different things. Everybody is saying the same thing and everybody has the same goal in mind. Everybody has that championship mentality, which is awesome and I love.  They all strive to be the best. There’s no coming second there.”

Shortly after he participated in both the morning and afternoon sessions of Saturday’s Swinney Camp, Boley made his way to Virginia Tech for an unofficial visit, where he picked up his latest offer.

He told us that he will be camping at the University of Michigan on Wednesday and this weekend he’ll travel to both Florida and Florida State. Next weekend, he’ll be at the University of Alabama and Tennessee.

For Boley this summer was about camping at and visiting schools that have shown interest in him. He wasn’t going to go anywhere that he didn’t have contact with. He went to or will go to all the schools that he felt like were really interested in him.

“This summer is just a summer to get out there and show schools that I can throw and what I can do,” he said. “And then, next summer will be more of where I’m interested in, just narrowing it down a little bit.”

While Clemson isn’t a school that’s offered him — the Tigers don’t typically offer rising sophomores — Boley figures that Dabo Swinney’s program will certainly play a role in his recruitment going forward.

“That’s definitely going to be a school until the end that I’ll consider going to and I’ll always have strong feelings for,” Boley said.

What would a Clemson offer down the road mean for Boley and his recruitment?

“It would mean a lot,” he said. “Getting an offer from a school that I’ve grown up watching and Clemson’s always been one of those four or five schools that you consider one of the top football schools in the nation; Clemson’s always been in that group. Getting an offer from them would be unreal.”

Boley imagines that he’ll be back for a game-day visit sometime this fall.

Swinney Camp Notebook: Day 4, Morning Session

The Clemson Insider was back on hand for Day 4 of the Dabo Swinney Camp on Saturday, June 11. Here are our notes and observations from the morning session of Saturday’s Swinney Camp.

  • As expected, Woodland (Dorchester, S.C.) four-star tackle Kam Pringle was back on campus for an unofficial visit Saturday. Pringle didn’t participate in Saturday’s morning session. He camped at Clemson last summer and was among the first batch of rising juniors to pick up an offer when Clemson formally turned the page to offering prospects in the 2024 class.
  • Mountain View High School (Lawrenceville, Ga.) four-star defensive end Justin Greene — the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman in the 2024 class, per 247Sports —impressed yet again. Greene will be here all three days and has certainly looked like the offer-worthy candidate we pinpointed him to be.
  • We were really impressed with the two marquee gunslinger prospects on campus: The Loomis Chaffee School’s (Windsor, CT.) Dante Reno and Hodgenville (Ky.) Larue County’s Cutter Boley.
  • Reno — a four-star class of 2024 recruit — has been on offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter’s radar for quite some time now. As has Boley — a class of 2025 recruit with offers from Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, West Virginia and others – who made an unofficial visit on April 8 and was back on campus Friday.
  • So, it came as no surprise to us when Streeter paid careful attention to every detail concerning Reno and Boley. Even with Clemson’s quarterback board shifting in the direction of Willis (Texas) five-star DJ Lagway and Providence Day School (Charlotte, N.C) five-star Jadyn Davis, that didn’t prevent Reno from throwing in front of Streeter and Swinney for the second consecutive summer.
  • It’s clear that Clemson is still high on the Fiskdale (MA.) native, who Rivals considers to be the No. 15 quarterback in his class.
  • We were also left impressed by what Grayson’s (Loganville, Ga.) four-star interior offensive lineman Waltclaire Flynn, Jr. (pictured above) had to offer. Flynn isn’t the biggest prospect in terms of size, but his footwork, athleticism, smarts and instincts, immediately jump out. It’s no wonder that Rivals has him pegged as the No. 1 center prospect in the class of 2024.
  • Back out there for another day of work, Yulee (Fla.) three-star safety Landon Hale continues to look the part. All the tools are there and while his recruitment has seemingly heated it up, he would be one of the more sought-after safeties in the country, if he had another year of game film under his belt.
  • Before the start of Saturday’s Swinney Camp, Director of Special Teams Bill Spiers paid a lot of attention to Cornelius (N.C.) Hough 2024 kicker Nolan Hauser, who was back on campus today. Hauser’s coming off visits to North Carolina, Penn State and Tennessee, while Ohio State stopped by Hough at the end of last month. He’s quickly become one of the more high-profile kickers in the country and already has prior connections to the Clemson program.
  • TCI learned that both Troup County (Lagrange, Ga.) four-star edge rusher Qua Birdsong and four-star safety Noah Dixon will be on campus later this afternoon, Dixon reported an offer from the Tigers last week, while his teammate, Birdsong, is hopeful to add one as well.

Big-time Kentucky QB gets first feel for Clemson: ‘It definitely sets the bar high’

Last week, Clemson played host to one of the hottest quarterback prospects in the class of 2025.

Cutter Boley, a big-time quarterback prospect out of LaRue County (Hodgenville, KY.), made his way to Tiger Town for an unofficial visit on Friday, April 8.

“It was amazing,” Boley told The Clemson Insider. “I had a great time. I really got a chance to sit down and talk with Coach (Brandon) Streeter. He seemed like a great dude. I loved all the facilities. I loved all the people. It was a great visit.

“It’s definitely one of the best visits I’ve taken so far and the people there are amazing. They’re second-to-none. The people (stood out the most) 100%. Everyone there seemed really involved and they all had the same goal in mind and they all seemed like great people, nonetheless.

What did Boley hear from Clemson’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach while he was on campus?

“He wants me to come down and camp,” Boley said. “They’ve never seen me throw in person yet, so he wants me to come down for camp and he wants to stay in contact. So, we’ll see after that. He said he loved my film. He said he loved my size, he loved my arm. He said I have all the attributes to be a big-time quarterback.”

Boley is a big fan of Streeter.

“I think his offensive scheme is amazing,” Boley said of Clemson’s offensive coordinator. “He’s gonna do an amazing job. I really like him as a person. He’s a great guy. I feel like we could really bond, even outside of football, just be like friends. I liked his philosophy. I liked everything he said and everything he did. That meeting was amazing.”

In his meeting with Streeter, Boley was shown Clemson’s offensive playstyle and what to expect when you get there: how they play, how they do things. The quarterbacks are a little bit different. They do things differently from other skill positions in terms of lifting and that kind of stuff.

Clemson has been communicating through Boley’s head coach because he is a class of 2025 prospect after all. Essentially, the Tigers have been expressing interest in the big-time quarterback prospect and wanted to get him on campus.

“It’s a blessing for sure,” he said of receiving interest from a school like Clemson. “It’s amazing. It’s kind of surreal right now. Everything is happening so quickly for me. But to have interest from Clemson is amazing.”

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Boley has already picked up offers from Ole Miss, Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia and Kansas. While it’s an impressive feat for a freshman, this isn’t new territory for him and his family.

Boley saw his sister (Erin) play basketball at Notre Dame and Oregon and his brother (Jaxon) played football at Wyoming, so it’s been a blessing for him to follow in the footsteps of his siblings.

That’s why he understands just how important the value of getting your degree as a student-athlete is and why Clemson’s philosophy regarding education stood out to Boley during his visit.

Boley didn’t hesitate to say that Clemson is the best visit he’s been on.

“This stands first, 100%,” he said. “It’s 100% the best visit I’ve been on so far. The way they did stuff with us and the way we just interacted with the coaches was amazing. The way I got to know people, it definitely sets the bar high for other schools.”

Talking about Boley and his game, if he had to compare himself to any quarterback(s) it would probably be Josh Allen or Trevor Lawrence. He describes himself as a tall, long pro-style quarterback. Boley can use his feet to make plays, but he’s really accurate and can throw the deep ball.

That Lawrence comparison goes a long way and makes Clemson that more intriguing of an option for Boley.

“That makes me feel even better because it makes me feel like I can fit right in,” Boley said. “As soon as I go there — they’ve had a quarterback like me before — and I can fit right into their playstyle.”
