While many Kansas City Chiefs fans have only recently become aware of assistant Porter Ellett in his NFL films short, he’s made an outsized impact on the team and at his alma mater Brigham Young University prior.

Ellett has been with the Chiefs since 2017, playing an integral part in Kansas City’s administrative structure. He served as a senior assistant to Andy Reid and an offensive quality control coach before being promoted to his current position in the 2023 offseason.

Recently, BYU gifted Ellett a one-of-a-kind custom helmet with a split design that features both the Cougars’ and Chiefs’ color schemes and logos. He shared a video of the masterpiece on Twitter, showing the world the unique design of the helmet and thanking the BYU football program for the exceptionally cool piece of memorabilia.

While BYU’s campus in Provo, Utah is far from Ellett’s current home in Kansas City, clearly the school’s connection to him is never out of his reach. Their football program has had an indelible effect on the Chiefs given its connection to Ellett and head coach Andy Reid. Fans shouldn’t be surprised if Kansas City eyes some of their prospects in the 2023 NFL draft as they look to defend their status as reigning champions next season.

Look: Saints players tell their “My Cause, My Cleats” stories

Look: New Orleans Saints players like Mark Ingram II, Taysom Hill tell their “My Cause, My Cleats” stories

One of the cooler promotions the NFL does each season is its “My Cause, My Cleats” week to spread awareness of charitable foundations and causes important to its players, and many New Orleans Saints players participated by wearing customized shoes in Week 13’s game with the Tampa bay Buccaneers. Some of them shared stories behind the causes they’re supporting:

These Nelson Cruz Earth Day cleats are out of this world

The slugger knocked it out of the park with these

One of the best recent decisions baseball has made has been to allow players to express themselves with custom cleats.

While former New York Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier was lauded for putting spikes on rare Jordans and Nikes, players around the league haven’t been afraid to dive into the fray with their own signature looks.

We saw a ton of that on Jackie Robinson Day with stars like Pete Alonso, Akil Baddoo and Robinson Cano dropping custom kicks.  On this Friday’s Earth Day, Washington Nationals slugger Nelson Cruz will rock a pair featuring his home country of the Dominican Republic and, man, do they look stunning.

Making the Nike swoosh look like a sandbar in the water is an A+++ move.

Overall just stunning work here. Fans will have a chance to bid on these beauties after Friday’s game with proceeds benefiting Players For The Planet.

Don’t be surprised if Cruz hits another one of his towering home runs Friday while wearing them.

Tom Brady has some marketing advice for Drew Brees

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady shared some free advice on marketing T-shirts with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Longtime New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady ended up on the move this offseason, signing a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’ll be a big adjustment for him in leaving the cupcake AFC East for the always-competitive NFC South, but Brady’s biggest challenge might be the Hall of Fame-bound quarterback he’ll face on the New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees.

But it’s all friendly competition between Brady and Brees. He even took the time to offer Brees some merchandising advice in response to a news story about his own pending copyrights, remarking on Twitter that, “I never understood why Drew wasn’t making ‘Drew Orleans’ shirts…’

The question kind of has merit. Brees hasn’t shied away from endorsing products, services, and companies — last year’s “Untuckit” ad referencing the 2018 NFC title game comes to mind — but he hasn’t taken advantage of what should be an easy naming convention with the city where he’s made his mark.

Then again, we’ll always have this terrific custom jersey ad produced by the NFL, from what feels like a hundred years ago:
