The Steelers desperately needed depth and they got it on Sunday

The Steelers made some wise moves to bolster depth but not without the release of a 2019 fan favorite.

The Steelers continue to show that they’re pulling out all of the stops to go big or go home in 2020. On Sunday, the team re-signed their former backup quarterback Josh Dobbs and starting safety Sean Davis to bolster the depth of their respective positions.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges was released to make room for Dobbs, and the corresponding move for Davis was safety Curtis Riley. Pittsburgh’s hope is to be able to put Riley back on the practice squad.

Davis had just signed a two-year contract with the Washington Football Team in March.

Punter dilemma?

News came down Saturday that the Steelers were bringing in punter Dustin Colquitt for a tryout to potentially supplant Jordan Berry. Colquitt has played 15 seasons to Berry’s five, but they have similar stats over the last few years. Though Colquitt has 652 fewer punt yards than Berry’s 14,495, Colquitt’s is the more consistent of the two.

Dobbs didn’t play at all for the Jaguars in 2019 and appeared in just five games in 2018. According to Pro Football Reference, he had a 50 percent completion rate and threw an interception.

Davis entered the 2019 season at free safety for the Steelers on the final year of his rookie deal. He suffered a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 17, 2019. Following his injury, the Steelers traded their first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Beyond his three-interception, 92-tackle 2017 season, Davis hadn’t lived up to his second-round draft selection. Despite that, Pittsburgh was woefully thin depth-wise after his departure. Though he didn’t perform to expectations, he won’t be expected to start this time around. When Davis is in the game, at least he’ll know the system, which is a bonus — especially this season. Hopefully lessening his load will get more out of him, so to speak.

As all claimed players do, each will have to pass a physical and go through COVID-19 testing protocols.

Report: Steelers release S Curtis Riley to make room for Sean Davis

The Steelers continue to shuffle the roster after cuts.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are busy shuffling roster spots on this Sunday afternoon. According to ESPN NFL reporter Brooke Pryor, the Steelers are going to release safety Curtis Riley to make room for Sean Davis, who they just signed back to the team.

According to Pryor, the plan with Riley is to bring him back as part of the newly-expanded 16-man practice squad. Riley was a full-time starter for the New York Giants in 2018 and brings with him solid coverage skills on the back end.

Putting Riley on the practice squad where he is likely to join rookie Antoine Brooks Jr. gives Pittsburgh some options on a weekly basis as to the division of labor for the safety position. Backing up starters Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds will be Sean Davis and Marcus Allen with Jordan Dangerfield as more of a special-teams ace.

Be sure to let us know in the comments below what you think of the move to release Riley and bring Davis back into the fold.

3 things the addition of S Curtis Riley could mean for the Steelers

It seems like every offseason the Pittsburgh Steelers make a sneaky signing that flies under the radar initially and ends up paying off big time. Last season it was cornerback Steven Nelson who solidified the cornerback depth chart and this offseason it could the signing of safety Curtis Riley.

Here are the three big things the addition of Riley could mean for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh has their third safety

With all due respect to guys like Marcus Allen, Jordan Dangerfield and Antoine Brooks, Riley brings a level of experience and production they cannot match. Brooks might be the longterm future at one safety spot but for now, Riley’s ability to drop into coverage and step up in run support makes him far more valuable.

Pittsburgh Steelers add depth at safety

The Steelers are expected to add depth at free safety with the signing of former Titan/Giant/Raider, Curtis Riley.

Per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Steelers are in the process of signing free safety Curtis Riley.

Riley, who has started 16 games just once in his four-year career, will add depth to a position that is thin behind Minkah Fitzpatrick.

His best season came in 2018 with the New York Giants when he recorded four interceptions (one for a score), five passes defended and 75 tackles.

Riley played his first two seasons for the Titans and was with the Raiders in 2019.
