Florida Gators football returns to the field on Saturday while Friday has a hot lineup of other athletic activities in orange and blue.

We are mere hours away from Florida Gators football as the beloved boys in Orange and Blue continue to prepare for their gridiron tussle with the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Despite ongoing issues with positive coronavirus testing numbers, the game appears to be set to go.

This big news on this Friday is Heisman Trophy front-runner Trevor Lawrence’s positive COVID-19 test and subsequent quarantine. The junior quarterback for the No. 1-ranked Clemson Tigers will not play in Saturday’s game against Boston College.

Today, the No. 10 women’s and No. 3 men’s swimming and diving teams take on the Georgia Bulldogs, whose teams rank No. 4 and No. 8 in the nation, respectively, in Athens. The competition is the first of the fall season for both teams.

The cross country team kicks off the SEC Championships Friday morning after participating in just three events the past month. The meet is hosted by LSU and is being held in Baton Rouge.

Gators soccer will also see action today against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Gators enter with a 1-3-1 record during a hard-luck season and will look to get back on track with a win against the 2-3-1 Vols.

Finally, the fourth-ranked Florida volleyball squad heads to Tuscaloosa for a back-to-back match with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Florida boasts a 2-0 record on the year while Bama is winless in two matches.

Gators News: Wide assortment of Florida sports on deck today

Swimming and diving, cross country, soccer and volleyball are all on the agenda Thursday as UF sports gets into the swing of the fall season

[jwplayer 66HxiJ8R]

Saturday is nearly here Gators fans, with both college football and several other sports on the weekend agenda for University of Florida athletics. While the clock ticks down to game time, let us take a look at what is going on around the sports world.

At the top of the news, while the Southeastern Conference made it three weeks before its first coronavirus postponement, the Big Ten’s remade plan for the regular season has already fallen apart after just one week of play. The conference’s inability to play even two weeks of the regular season without having a game canceled due to COVID-19 highlights the stupidity of trying to force nine games into nine weeks in an effort to gain ground in the College Football Playoff race.

The lone Gators team in action yesterday was the women’s golf team, who finished up competition at the East Lake Cup in Atlanta. The squad finished its final round of the fall season with authority, claiming four straight matches to clinch third place in the final results.

Today, the No. 10 women’s and No. 3 men’s swimming and diving teams take on the Georgia Bulldogs, whose teams rank No. 4 and No. 8 in the nation, respectively, in Athens. The competition is the first of the fall season for both teams.

The cross country team kicks off the SEC Championships Thursday morning after participating in just three events the past month.

Gators News: COVID-19 outbreak continues, Gators golf in action

6 new cases of COVID-19 were reported on the football team but are still expected to play, while the men’s and women’s golf teams played.

[jwplayer 66HxiJ8R]

Welcome to a Wednesday edition of Gators News! As we inch closer and closer to game day, the excitement continues to build in anticipation of the football team returning to the gridiron. Of course, there are a few other sports of note as well, but let us start with the hand-egg-ball news.

The biggest story is that Florida reported six new COVID-19 positives on Tuesday, though head coach Dan Mullen still expects to play Missouri on Saturday. Mullen did not reveal any information about the current COVID situation at Florida, other than saying the most recent positive test within the program was last Saturday.

Yesterday, both the men’s and women’s golf teams continued play in their respective competitions. The guys finished tied for fourth overall at the conclusion of the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate, serendipitously with the Vanderbilt Commodores, while the gals dropped a semifinal match to the South Carolina Gamecocks on the second day of the East Lake Cup.

The Lady Gators will compete in the third-place match tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. EDT on the final day of play after expected foul weather altered the schedule.

Gators News: Football is returning, men’s golf has season-best round

Both of Florida’s men’s and women’s golf teams played on Monday, with the men having a season-best round while the women placed 4 in top-10.

[jwplayer 66HxiJ8R]

We are one day closer to the return of Florida Gators football and on this lovely autumn Tuesday the Gator Nation continues to prepare for the excitement the weekend promises to bring.

Checking out the football front first, USA TODAY Sports still projects the Gators to play the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Peach Bowl this postseason while Kyle Trask hangs on to his Heisman hopes by a thread.

In other Gators sports news, both the men’s and the women’s golf team took to the links yesterday, with the former playing through their second round at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate in Franklin, Tenn., while the latter participated in the East Lake Cup held in Atlanta, Ga.

The men recorded a season-low 11-under par 273 in the second round on Monday, jumping up to fourth place heading into the last round today. The Lady Gators were not quite as successful, finishing 4-over par on the day, but managed to place four athletes in the top-10 individually; competition continues today and tomorrow for the women.

Gators News: It’s game week again and UF sports are hopping

College football is back this weekend in Gainesville but there’s plenty of news from the soccer, golf and tennis teams who are in action.

[jwplayer GHlwpr8W-er0jUifI]

It is finally the beginning of another game week for the Florida Gators after a two-week layoff due to an outbreak of the novel coronavirus on the team. With the positive tests hopefully in the rearview mirror, Gators fans can start looking ahead to Halloween, when they face the Missouri Tigers.

While the football team sat, plenty of other Florida athletic clubs saw action this past weekend, starting with the men’s tennis team who participated in the Gamecock Fall SEC Shootout in Columbia, S.C. — the second of three tournaments UF plays in this fall. The competition was cut short by foul weather on Sunday, but the Gators ultimately went 20-7 overall.

On Sunday, the soccer team was also in South Carolina to play the Lady Gamecocks and were unfortunately on the losing end of the match, falling 4-2. The loss — the first final score to be determined by more than one goal all season — drops the Lady Gators’ record this fall to 1-3-1 overall and winless in the SEC.

The men’s golf team kicked off its first round at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate on Sunday and finished the day sitting in eighth place behind a 7-under par performance. The all-SEC tournament in Nashville, Tenn., continues today and concludes on Tuesday.

Finally, the women’s golf team play the first of three rounds in the East Lake Cup held in Atlanta, Ga. — their third and final tournament of the season. Florida will face Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas in the event.

Gators News: Football idle but Florida sports are hopping

Friday’s news from the Gator Nation includes volleyball results as well as a look ahead at men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and soccer.

[jwplayer O1smRfIc]

Friday is finally here and despite the lack of Florida Gators football this coming weekend, there is a lot going on around the Gator Nation these next three days.

However, for those of you who are still following football while the Gators take another bye, Eddie Timanus at USA TODAY Sports took a look at five games with College Football Playoff implications — none of which include the Southeastern Conference. The SEC picture isn’t likely to change; the Alabama Crimson Tide is a heavy favorite at the Tennessee Volunteers and most other contenders have the week off.

At the top of Florida athletics news, the fourth-ranked volleyball team almost perfectly replicated its performance the night prior against the Auburn Tigers and came away with another 3-0 road win in straight sets. The win improves the squad to 2-0 as they head back home to face off against Alabama on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31.

Looking ahead in Gators sports, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams travel for their competitions this weekend, with the guys playing in the Gamecock Fall SEC Shootout in Columbia, S.C., while the gals cross the border north to take on the to face the Georgia Bulldogs, along with the Crimson Tide and Kentucky Wildcats; both events last from Friday to Sunday.

This is the second tournament of the year for the men after a strong showing at the Tiger Fall Invitational, while the women finished on a high note in their opening tournament at the SEC Challenge in Tuscaloosa — both earlier this month.

On Sunday, the men’s golf team also hits the road for the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate, a 54-hole men’s college tournament hosted by Vanderbilt University, for their second tournament of the fall. They finished 12th in the inaugural Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., earlier this month.

Finally, the soccer team, who is currently sporting a tough 1-2-1 record so far this season despite being outscored by only two goals in four games, also head to South Carolina for their match with the No. 11 Gamecocks on Sunday. All four of Florida’s opponents this season have been ranked in the top 15 in the nation.

Gators News: Volleyball sweeps Auburn, women’s golf finishes tied for 6th

The latest news from the Gator Nation has the volleyball squad emerging victorious vs Auburn Wednesday while the women’s golf team faltered.

[jwplayer O1smRfIc]

Sliding down the slope towards the weekend we arrive on Thursday, and despite the Florida Gators football sitting out another Saturday due to a coronavirus outbreak, UF’s fall sports are in full swing.

The women’s golf team finished tied for sixth place out of 14 schools at The Ally at Old Waverly as the tournament came to a close yesterday. Sophomore Annabell Fuller was the only Lady Gator to finish the three-day competition with an under-par scorecard.

The volleyball team also saw action Wednesday night, taking its match from the Auburn Tigers on the road in straight sets in the season opener. With the victory, Florida has now won 28 season openers and four-straight overall. The two teams meet again tonight — same time, same place.

Today, both the men’s and women’s golf team travel to their respective matchups, with the men heading to Columbia, S.C., for the Gamecock Fall SEC Shootout while the women are on the move to Athens, Ga., to face the Georgia Bulldogs, along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Kentucky Wildcats. Both events last from Friday to Sunday.

Gators News: Women’s golf slips to seventh, volleyball kicks off

Florida Gators football has another bye but the other athletic action is picking up with women’s golf, volleyball and both tennis teams.

[jwplayer O1smRfIc]

We have reached the midpoint of another week and despite another off-day for the Florida Gators football team this weekend, there are a few other UF sports currently in action as the week winds down.

The women’s golf team continued play at The Ally at Old Waverly tournament on Tuesday, dropping from first to seventh in the three-day, SEC-only competition. Sophomore Annabell Fuller paced the Gators after posting her second-straight scorecard under par. The tournament culminates today starting at 10 a.m. EDT.

Also in action today is the Gators volleyball team, who kick off back-to-back road matches at the Auburn Tigers today and continues tomorrow. The squad is only playing in eight games this year against four different SEC schools — all in the same two-day format — due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams take the court away from Gainesville, with the former participating in the Gamecock Fall SEC Shootout hosted by South Carolina, while the latter cross the border north to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. This is the second tournament of the year for the men after a strong showing at the Tiger Fall Invitational, while the women finished on a high note in their opening tournament at the SEC Challenge in Tuscaloosa — both earlier this month.

Gators News: Women’s golf takes early lead, volleyball to travel for opener

Football news is slow today but a couple of women’s sports are in action this week as UF’s athletic programs emerge from their slumber.

[jwplayer FpdiEnjh-er0jUifI]

Welcome to a Tuesday edition of Gators News! Today is a bit of a slow day as the Gators football team sits out for two weeks due to an outbreak of the novel coronavirus. However, there are a couple of Florida sports in action early this week.

After the first round of The Ally at Old Waverly, hosted by Mississippi State, Gators women’s golf leads the all-SEC field. Marina Escobar Domingo and Addie Baggarly both recorded five birdies and finished 4 under par to lead UF to the top spot; both golfers also sit in a tie for second place individually at the conclusion of Day 1. The second round starts at 10:30 a.m. EDT today and will culminate on Wednesday.

Speaking of tomorrow, the Gators volleyball team kick off their 2020 schedule on the road against Auburn in the first of back-to-back matches against the Tigers in Alabama. The squad is only playing in eight games this year against four different SEC schools — all in the same two-day format — due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gators News: October 19, 2020

Football was out of action but the soccer team lost a double-OT thriller to Vandy while the women’s golf team heads to their next tourney.

[jwplayer FpdiEnjh-er0jUifI]

Welcome back from the weekend, one that felt a bit empty for Gators fans as their beloved football team had their game against the LSU Tigers postponed until Dec. 12. Even in the absence of gridiron competition, there are still a few stories to note as we start up another week.

While the Gators sat out, the show otherwise went on without them, resulting in a one-spot drop in USA TODAY Sports’ latest re-ranking. Among the biggest movers forward this week are Coastal Carolina, Florida State and South Carolina after each posted wins against ranked opponents.

Also at USA TODAY Sports, Paul Myerberg takes a look at college football’s winners and losers from Week 7. After a tough Saturday, the SEC has just four teams with fewer than two losses and a dwindling list of options for the national semifinals.

On Sunday, the soccer team hosted the Vanderbilt Commodores and lost a heartbreaker in double-overtime, 2-1. Florida took the lead early in the 41st minute in the first half and held it until Vandy scored in the 80th minute; the winning goal hit the net in the 103rd minute.

Today, the women’s golf team travels to West Point, Miss., to participate in The Ally at Old Waverly tournament, a three-day event that lasts until Wednesday. The squad will face the other 13 Southeastern Conference schools in the event.
