Gators News: Lady Gators look to keep rolling vs UNC Asheville

Florida Gators women’s basketball team heads up the road to face UNC Asheville Bulldogs today looking to earn their fifth win of the season.

It is humpday meaning that we are halfway to another Saturday filled with Florida Gators football. This weekend, UF will host the LSU Tigers at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in a makeup game rescheduled from October due to coronavirus protocols.

While most other sports are currently idle — the men’s basketball team if off until Saturday, when it faces the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee — the 4-1 women’s basketball team will be in action on the road this afternoon against the 1-2 UNC Asheville Bulldogs, with tip off scheduled for 4 p.m. EST. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Gators News: Double trouble leads ladies to basketball victory

Florida Gators women’s basketball team won their fourth game of the season against FAU to start the year a perfect 4-0 on home court.

It is Tuesday and as we wade deeper into the week we reach a bit of a sports doldrum, as the only action between today and Saturday comes courtesy of the Lady Gators’ parquet squad.

UF’s women’s basketball team won its fourth game last night against the Florida Atlantic Owls, 88-76, pushing their record to a tidy 4-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 at home to start the season for the first time in four years. Senior guard Kiki Smith and sophomore guard Lavender Briggs both dropped double-doubles in the winning effort. The former has scored 14 or more points in all five games this season, along with a duo of double-doubles in which she notched 20 or more points.

The women are scheduled to play next tomorrow afternoon at the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in Kimmel Arena, with tip off slated for 4 p.m. EST.

Gators News: A winning weekend for the Gator Nation

UF athletics was in full stride the past couple of days as both basketball teams and the football team were all winners.

Welcome back from another successful weekend of Florida Gators sports! Three UF athletic teams were in action over the past couple of days and all three emerged victorious from their respective campaigns. We all know how the football game turned out — a 31-19 win over the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville — let us take a look at how the two basketball squads fared.

The women’s team also played on Saturday, hosting the Cincinnati Bearcats and laying an 81-58 beatdown of the visitors. Sophomore guard Lavender Briggs led the way with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists while senior guard Kiki Smith added 19 points and six rebounds to push the squad’s record to 3-1. The Lady Gators play again tonight when they host the Florida Atlantic Owls, with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.

Lastly, the men’s basketball team annihilated the Stetson Hatters, 86-40, on Sunday to move their record to 3-0 on the young season. Sophomore guard Scottie Lewis notched his first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points while grabbing 10 boards and dishing out six assists. The guys next play on Dec. 12 against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee, with tip off scheduled for 11 a.m. EST.

Gators News: Both basketball teams get ready for action

Florida Gators basketball is set to start today as the Lady Gators travel to Tally to face FSU while the men face Army at Mohegan Sun mañana

Today is Tuesday and as we wade deeper into the week, kickoff between the Florida Gators and the Tennessee Volunteers inches closer. However, it looks like basketball season is finally about to begin in Gainesville as both the men’s and women’s teams have had to overcome COVID-19 issues in the opening week.

The Lady Gators, whose game against the Florida State Seminoles was postponed on Sunday, will face FSU in Tallahassee tonight in a rescheduling of the prior match. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra; tomorrow’s game against Charleston Southern, originally set for 3 p.m. EST, has shifted to 5 p.m. EST to accommodate the rescheduling.

In case you have not heard the news, the men’s team is heading back to Bubbleville with their first game of the season scheduled for tomorrow against Army at 2:30 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and can be heard on the Gators Sports Network with Mick Hubert on the mic.

Gators News: Florida hosts Kentucky, Lady Gators head to FSU

UF football faces Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday while Lady Gators women’s basketball team travels to Tallahassee to face Florida State.

It is Friday and that means we are now counting down the hours until kickoff tomorrow between the Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats in The Swamp. Now that Thanksgiving is in the rearview, the Gator Nation can turn its attention to the next task at hand and get ready to get rowdy for the Orange and Blue.

The only other sports news to note is that the women’s basketball team head upstate to face the Florida State Seminoles on Sunday. The Lady Gators won their first game of the season against the Grambling State Tigers on Wednesday at the O’Connell Center, 90-47, while the game represents the season opener for FSU. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network and over the radio on ESPN 98.1FM/850AM WRUF.

We have once again reached the midpoint of the week, with Thanksgiving coming up tomorrow for Gators fans in the United States of America and a football game against the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday in The Swamp.

Speaking of the football team, the College Football Playoff picture was officially announced last night by the playoff committee, with the Florida Gators sitting at No. 6 — behind the Texas A&M Aggies — just outside the top four teams who will compete for the national title.

In other Florida sports news, the women’s basketball team tip off their 2020-21 schedule today against the Grambling State Tigers in the O’Connell Center starting at 1 p.m. EST. The game can be watched on SEC NETWORK+ with Kyle Crooks & Brittany Davis and heard on WRUF ESPN 98.1 FM/850 AM  with Tom Collett & Kelly Davis.

Gators News: College Football Playoff announcement tonight

Florida Gators football is in the mix for a spot in the College Football Playoff picture when it is announced; women’s basketball tips off.

The din of the past weekend dims to a dull roar on this Tuesday as both college football’s Week 12 and the National Football League’s Week 11 come to an official close, leaving football fans a few days until their next gridiron fix.

In the meantime, the first official College Football Playoff rankings will be released tonight by the CFP selection committee, with the Florida Gators expected to be in the mix. Several questions loom as the committee sets the tone for the rest of the regular season and those questions are addressed by USA TODAY Sports.

As far as other Gators sports, women’s basketball tip off their season tomorrow against Grambling State University in the O’Connell Center. The first game of the season starts at 1 p.m. EST.

Gators News: A few fall sports wrap up with big wins

Florida Gators volleyball team, as well as both men’s and women’s swimming and diving, emerged victorious from their final weekend of play.

Florida Gators football continued its winning ways on Saturday with a win over the cellar-dwelling Vanderbilt Commodores. The victory was anything but convincing, leaving many questions for the fanbase after the defense looked about as porous as an ocean sponge again.

In other Gators sports news, the fifth-ranked men’s swimming and diving team finished the fall swimming season with a bang, securing a 521-426 victory over the Auburn Tigers in the Auburn Invitational, which ran from Friday until Sunday. With the swimming portion of the schedule now over for 2020, the divers head to Coral Gables to compete in a three-day diving tournament hosted by the Miami Hurricanes on Dec. 2-4 to wrap up the year.

The No. 10 women’s swimming and diving team also competed in the Auburn Invitational, claiming a 508-421 victory over the Tigers. Much like the men, the women’s swimming season is over and the diving team will head to South Florida for its next and final competition.

The volleyball team also concluded its season yesterday against the Georgia Bulldogs in a back-to-back meet, dropping the Saturday match by a score of 3-1 while bouncing back on Sunday to flip UGA and finish the year with a 3-1 win. Fifth-ranked Florida finishes its SEC-only fall schedule with a 6-2 record and now await the release of the spring slate.

Gators News: Four Florida fall sports ranked in top 10

Both of Florida’s swimming & diving teams sit in first place entering the final day while the volleyball team prepares for its final weekend

We are just a day away from the big game between the Florida Gators and the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville, Tenn. While Vandy does not strike fear in the hearts of most football fans, every game counts and on any given day anything can happen. But there is a lot more happening than the ol’ pigskin game that brings pride to the Gator Nation.

Four Florida athletic teams currently sit in the top 10 of their respective sports, with men’s swimming and diving as well as volleyball at No 5, football at No. 6, and women’s swimming and diving at No. 10.

Speaking of the men’s aquatic team, the swimmers swept all of their events and the Gators finished up with seven total event victories to lead the pack at the Auburn Invitational. Meanwhile, the women also fared well at the same competition, with freshman Cecilia Porter shattering the 100 breast school record by .33 seconds to give the Lady Gators the overall lead heading into the final day. The event competition as well as dual meets for the fall conclude today.

Finally, there is the volleyball team (5-1, 5-1 SEC), which has had quite a successful season heading into their last two matches of the year on their home floor against the Georgia Bulldogs (3-3, 3-3 SEC) tonight. UF holds a 66-9 series advantage over UGA, sporting a dominating 63-1 record with coach Mary Wise at the helm.

Gators News: Men’s and women’s swimming and diving dominate

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams sit in first place after the first day of competition at the Auburn Invitational.

Only two days until the Florida Gators face the Vanderbilt Commodores on the road as UF continues its 2020 Southeastern Conference football schedule. While things are still a bit slow as far as athletics news is concerned, the guys and gals in the Orange and Blue have been competing in our reptilian mascot’s favorite environment.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dove into the first day of the Auburn Invitational yesterday, making a big splash in the final mixed meet of the year.

The former — currently ranked third in the nation — notched four top-10 swims and five championship heat victories to take a lead after day one while the latter — ranked No. 10 — also to topped the leaderboards behind superlative performances by sophomore Talia Bates and junior Leah Braswell as the Lady Gators claimed the top spot in every championship heat.

Competition continues today through Friday at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala.
