Colorado in the top-8 for 2023 four-star CB Smith Snowden

The Buffs are in the top-eight for four-star CB Smith Snowden out of Utah, but CU will have to beat out the Utes, Utah State and BYU.

You can’t say the Colorado Buffaloes’ new-look coaching staff hasn’t been aggressive this offseason in the recruiting game.

In the class of 2023 alone, the Buffs have offered multiple four-star recruits at every position and even a few five-stars. While my overall optimism is still dependent on those elite players actually committing, they do have a decent chance at landing four-star (247Sports) CB Smith Snowden out of Lehi, Utah. The 2023 prospect listed the Buffs in his top-eight schools on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, with Snowden living in our neighboring state to the west, the Buffs are going to have a tough time beating out BYU, Utah and Utah State — all three teams that won at least 10 games last season.

Colorado will also be competing with Oregon State, Northwestern, Stanford and Washington State. Snowden has an official visit set with Northwestern on Friday.

ESPN puts Colorado in its top-25 2023 college football recruiting class rankings

ESPN had Colorado in the top-25 for its 2023 college football recruiting class rankings

The Buffaloes have already received commitments from 10 players for their 2023 recruiting class. This has earned the Buffs some well-earned recognition from national recruiting sites and major outlets.

According to 247Sports, CU has the No. 11 recruiting class in the country as of Monday. That’s good enough for second in the Pac-12, right behind USC at No. 10. 247Sports ranks LB CJ Turner, who sports a .8900 ranking, as CU’s best defensive commit at the moment, making him a high three-star prospect this year who could play his way to a four-star rating. Three-star Naquil Betrand, a monster OT out of Philadelphia, is the Buffs’ top offensive commit, per 247Sports.

ESPN has also confirmed Colorado’s fast start, placing the Buffs at No. 21 in the country in its latest 2023 college football recruiting class rankings.

Here is what ESPN writer Craig Haubert had to say about Colorado’s class:

While USC works to reestablish itself as a dominant recruiting force in the Pac-12, Colorado is making some noise of its own on the recruiting trail, working to sign one of the top classes in the conference. They went into California to secure their QB in the four-star Staub, a passer with a quick release and gunslinger’s swagger. Edward Schultz and Isaiah Hardge, a quick playmaker who can be dangerous in space, have the tools be develop into productive weapons. A nice get out of Philadelphia is massive and aggressive OL Naquil Betrand.

2023 DB Arian Parish names the Buffaloes to his top-six

Three-star DB Arian Parish has Colorado in his top-six

Class of 2023 defensive back Arian Parish out of Katy, Texas has named CU to his top-six schools. The Buffaloes have long targeted the 5-foot-11 170-pound Texan, offering him a scholarship in September of 2021 and it appears that safeties coach Brett Maxies’ long pursuit is starting to pay off.

Parish also listed Kansas, Duke, Houston, Arizona and Texas-San Antonio to his top six. According to 247Sports, Parish is listed as a three-star prospect and is the 97th-ranked player in the state of Texas for this class. He also ranks in the top-50 at his position nationwide, currently holding down the number 47 spot.

Texas has always been a recruiting hotbed for the Buffaloes, even back to their Big 12 and Big 8 days. It seems as though that will continue, as the Buffs’ current 2023 commits list already has three players from the Lone Star State. Bring it home, coach Maxie!

Buffs competing for four-star 2023 WR Robert Lockhart III

The Buffs are in the hunt for a four-star wide receiver

The Colorado Buffaloes are already benefiting from hiring Phil McGeoghan as the new wide receivers coach. The veteran assistant has spent time in the NFL and has already been strong on the recruiting trail.

Now, the Buffs are in the race for four-star class of 2023 WR Robert Lockhart III, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.

Lockhart is also considering Jackson State and Maryland at the moment along with the Buffs, and he walked away impressed with the veteran presence on the coaching staff in Boulder (h/t Wiltfong).

“Colorado, they have a veteran NFL coach and he was telling me all the receivers he’s worked with.”

If McGeoghan can use his impressive resume to bring in Lockhart, that is yet another nice addition to the 2023 recruiting class. Just shortly after being hired, the Buffs also landed a commitment from three-star WR Edward Schultz.

With all of the changes in the WR room during this offseason, the group looks much different in 2022, and McGeoghan and head coach Karl Dorrell are working hard to secure a talented group when 2023 rolls around as well.

247Sports has Lockhart ranked as the 37th WR in the class, and the Buffs would be ecstatic to add the speedy 5-foot-7, 175-pound wideout from Georgia. The race is on, and beating out both Maryland and Jackson State is a tall task.

Class of 2023 RB AJ Newberry announces commitment to Colorado

Colorado received its first commitment from a class of 2023 running back

Led by coach Darian Hagan, the Colorado Buffaloes have had a revolving door of talent at running back. Jarek Broussard ran the show in 2020 and 2021, but now Alex Fontenot, Deion Smith, transfer Ramon Jefferson and incoming freshman Victor Venn will take over in 2022.

Hagan and the Buffs also have their sights set on the future, which got a little brighter on Monday when 2023 running back AJ Newberry announced via Twitter his commitment to Colorado. Newberry, who stands 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, marks the first committed running back for the Buffs’ class of 2023.

Hailing from Grand Prairie, Texas, Newberry is considered a three-star prospect according to Rivals. He has also received offers from Air Force, Georgia Tech, Grambling State, Rice, SMU and the University of Texas-San Antonio.

Every 2023 offensive lineman Colorado football has offered

Colorado is getting to work on its 2023 O-line class

Winning the trenches is something Colorado absolutely has to improve upon next season. The Buffs’ offensive line struggled immensely in 2021 and even prompted a coaching change.

Now with Kyle DeVan leading the big men up front, there is some hope that CU can turn things around. Alabama transfer Tommy Brown recently joined the herd, and I have high expectations for incoming freshman Travis Gray out of Aurora.

DeVan and Karl Dorrell have now begun shifting their recruiting attention towards the 2023 class. Through March 2, the Buffs have offered nine 2023 offensive linemen (one of which committed elsewhere) according to 247Sports.

Let’s take a closer look at who may be suiting up in the trenches for Colorado in the near future.

Note: All offers are current through March 2 and courtesy of 247Sports.

CU Buffs offer local tight end Andrew Metzger

Colorado extended an offer to a local tight end

I’ve always been of the mindset that recruiting well in your own state is critical to building a program. Nothing is more embarrassing than a Colorado product signing with an out-of-state school and later coming back to beat the Buffs. The great Bill McCartney recruited the area well, and it now seems Karl Dorrell is beginning to appreciate the same method.

About an hour from Boulder is Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, where class of 2023 tight end/defensive lineman Andrew Metzger attends. After being named a first-team all-conference player this fall, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Metzger received a rush of offers, including one from Colorado on Tuesday. He has also been offered by Miami (OH), Nevada, Eastern Michigan, Kansas and Ohio all within the past two months.

Metzger visited CU on Tuesday soon before an offer was extended later that day. Here’s what he told Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede following his visit:

“I can’t really say that I have a dream school. I am still open to looking at everything. CU was amazing today. I still have a lot to look at, though. Don’t hold me to this, but I would like to commit before the season. But whatever happens, happens. I want to try and make sure that I find the fit. However long it takes, then that is how long it takes. But once I find the right fit, I am going to commit.”

247Sports considers him a three-star prospect and the No. 44 tight end nationwide in his class.

Colorado receives first 2023 QB commit

Ryan Staub is a CU Buff

In a matter of weeks, the Buffaloes have built a strong base at quarterback while looking ahead to the future. On Monday, they received their first 2023 QB commit in Ryan Staub, a three-star prospect hailing from Santa Clarita, California.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Staub was offered by CU on Jan. 26 and verbally committed just five days later. He had also received an offer from Arizona. During his junior season at West Ranch High School, Staub threw 2,414 yards and 21 touchdowns while being named the Foothill League Offensive Player of the Year.

Staub now joins DE Kam’ron Bizor within the Buffs’ 2023 class.

The young QB’s commitment was another highlight of what has been a busy past few days on the recruiting trail. This week alone, Colorado has also received commitments from RB Ramon Jefferson (Sam Houston State transfer), OL Alex Harkey (JUCO transfer), DB Jeremy Mack (JUCO transfer) and 2022 RB Anthony Hankerson.
