Colorado commit AJ Newberry averaging over 160 rushing yards in senior season

AJ Newberry has rushed for some big numbers in his senior season

AJ Newberry’s senior season at Texas’ South Grand Prairie High School has been excellent, at least on a personal level. In five games thus far with the 2-5 Warriors, he has averaged 162 rushing yards and is nearly at the 1,000-yard mark.

One of his better games this season came last Friday when the 6-foot, 200-pound Buffs commit ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Colorado running backs coach Darian Hagan, who recruited Newberry, was also in attendance.

Newberry, the No. 60-ranked running back in his class (247Sports), is so far the only 2023 RB commit the Buffs hold. Current true freshmen Anthony Hankerson and Victor Venn are also promising tailbacks in the program, so we’ll see if Colorado decides to add more depth moving forward.

Class of 2023 RB AJ Newberry announces commitment to Colorado

Colorado received its first commitment from a class of 2023 running back

Led by coach Darian Hagan, the Colorado Buffaloes have had a revolving door of talent at running back. Jarek Broussard ran the show in 2020 and 2021, but now Alex Fontenot, Deion Smith, transfer Ramon Jefferson and incoming freshman Victor Venn will take over in 2022.

Hagan and the Buffs also have their sights set on the future, which got a little brighter on Monday when 2023 running back AJ Newberry announced via Twitter his commitment to Colorado. Newberry, who stands 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, marks the first committed running back for the Buffs’ class of 2023.

Hailing from Grand Prairie, Texas, Newberry is considered a three-star prospect according to Rivals. He has also received offers from Air Force, Georgia Tech, Grambling State, Rice, SMU and the University of Texas-San Antonio.
