The New York Giants are going thorough an unusual transition after firing head coach Pat Shurmur after the season. Usually when a team dismisses the head coach, they fire his staff along with him sans a few they’d like to keep.
That did not happen here with the Giants. Shurmur was canned but his staff remained. New head coach Joe Judge will interview them one at a time and then either keep them or let them go.
Thus far, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and wide receiver coach Tyke Tolbert have been told they are returning. Defensive coordinator James Bettcher is out, replaced by Patrick Graham.
Defensive line coach Gary Emanuel has been replaced by Freddie Roach and Mike Shula will no longer be the offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. He may still find a spot within the organization.
Jerry Shuplinski has been brought in to the be the QB coach and Judge is still interviewing candidates for the OC position.
Today, it appears that running backs coach Craig Johnson will not be returning.
I'm told Craig Johnson won't be back. That's 6 out today. (Wells, Baker, Johnson, Withers, Dawson, Roeder) https://t.co/LVlalKOBvd

Johnson was another long-time Giants assistant, having joined the team in 2014 under Tom Coughlin.
