Cowboys News: Trysten Hill fined, Browns preview, Collins done, COVID

A breakdown of the Browns, a practice squad promotion, a ranking of skill players, and more in the last news and notes before Week 4 begins.

The Dallas Cowboys have a tough test in Week 4, as the talented Cleveland Browns travel to Dallas. Both teams are loaded with talented skill position players, but which teams weapons should get the edge? The managerial editors of the Cowboys Wire and Browns Wire go toe-to-toe and answer each other’s questions regarding nearly every aspect of Sunday’s showdown. If the Cowboys can get the ball rolling, the club has a chance to make a run as Sunday marks the first of three consecutive home games, and the schedule becomes more favorable.

Aldon Smith leading the league in sacks after his layoff is more than impressive, and should be a bigger talking point around the league. La’el Collins opts to go under the knife. Trysten Hill was punished for two plays against the Seahawks, a helmet-to-helmet hit on Russell Wilson, and the infamous roll on the knee of Chris Carson. The Cowboys promoted LB Francis Bernard to the active roster in help with depth. In non-Cowboys’ news, both the Chiefs and Patriots’ had a player test positive for Covid-19 just days before their matchup was set to take place. Positives include New England QB Cam Newton, and the teams join the Titans as the only teams with cases since the start of the 2020 NFL season.

It may not be Cowboys related, but it is huge NFL news. Cam Newton of the New England Patriots, as well as the Chiefs scout team QB, have both tested positive of Covid-19. The Tennessee Titans have already had a game rescheduled, and are still having new players pop up as positive. Hopefully all players involved fully recover and this doesn’t become a trend around the league.

Cowboys defensive tackle Trysten Hill made headlines last Sunday, and for the wrong reasons. Hill was fined for two different plays, including one play where Hill appeared to twist Seahawks running back Chris Carson’s knee, after Carson was already on the ground.

Francis Bernard promoted, why many are excited about his Cowboys prospects :: Cowboys Wire

Due to injuries, the Dallas Cowboys are extremely thin at the linebacker position. The club promoted practice squad LB Francis Bernard on Saturday. Bernard had a strong training camp and will have a chance to stay on the roster if he makes the most of Sunday.

Francis Bernard promoted, why many are excited about his Cowboys prospects

The Cowboys promoted LB Francis Bernard to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Cleveland.

An exciting Dallas Cowboys prospect is about to get his first real chance in a Dallas uniform. The club announced Saturday that rookie linebacker Francis Bernard had been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, in time for the Cowboys Week 4 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

The Cowboys utilized a roster clause that allows each team to call up two practice squad players the day before their game, with the condition that the players go back down to the practice squad the day after the game.

The Cowboys linebacker depth quickly went from a strength to a weakness, as they lost veteran Sean Lee before the season started, and Leighton Vander Esch after just one week. Both Lee (groin) and Vander Esch (collarbone) are set to rejoin the team this season, but their return isn’t expected in the next few weeks.

Jaylon Smith remains in his starting role, and rotational linebacker Joe Thomas has done an excellent job as an injury fill-in. That pairing played every single defensive snap against the Seahawks in Week 3; a sign that depth is much needed.

Why This Matters

Bernard is an instinctual, talented player, (draft guru Dane Brugler had a 4th-5th round draft grade on him) and the Utah prospect showed his potential during his strong training camp performance. Many believed Bernard was going to make the initial Cowboys roster, or be poached by another team LB-needy team after hitting the practice squad.

Here’s part of his writeup from our Player Profile from over the summer.

Bernard was a two-star recruit out of Herriman at running back, with just one offer on the table: Brigham Young University. His freshman season, which came after two years of missionary work in Atlanta, saw just a handful of snaps per game, and though he was generally productive, Bernard was asked to make the switch to linebacker the following year – a year in which he was ultimately suspended before the Cougars’ bowl game at season’s end.

There were two incidents that led to Bernard’s suspension and ultimately his leave from BYU. The first, and what led to his absence from the Poinsettia Bowl, is a routine noise complaint visit from the police that ended up with Bernard saying on video, “I swear on my life, if I see you, I will (expletive) strangle you until you (expletive) don’t breathe.” The second is an arrest for suspicion of DUI in October of 2017, the final straw.

He transferred to in-state rival Utah, and helped anchor a defense that propelled the Utes to an 11-win season. On the field, Dane Brugler had him graded as a 4th-5th-round prospect and summarized his play thusly:

The quarterback of the Utes’ defense, Bernard is a determined player with a violent mentality, seeing things quickly with enough athleticism to get the job done in pursuit. However, he must cut down on the missed tackles and develop his hand usage to properly stack, shed and make stops in the hole. Overall, Bernard needs to improve his take-on technique to earn a meaningful role in the NFL, but he is an aggressive run defender with promising reps in coverage, projecting as an NFL rookie backup who will eventually compete for starting reps.

Film

Forecast for Week 4

The majority of Bernard’s opportunities will likely come from special teams, but with the way this season is going the Cowboys need their backups to be ready for an increased role at a moment’s notice, especially at the linebacker position.

Linebackers Luke Gifford and Justin March each played over fifty percent of special teams snaps last week, but neither player was used to give Thomas or Smith a break on the defensive side of the ball.

It remains to be seen the level of opportunity the rookie will get this Sunday in Dallas, but the hungry Bernard will look to make the most of whatever snaps he’s given.

Why Browns Will Win

Go ahead and keep throwing on the Cowboys, and it”ll work.

To be fair, anyone would struggle against Matt Ryan, Jared Goff and Russell Wilson, but the secondary really has been mediocre – allowing nine touchdowns so far – while doing next to nothing to own the clock or go on long drives.

Turnovers have been a bit of a problem, too. Cleveland should be +2 in the turnover battle and should own field position – the field will look tilted at times. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Cowboys Will Win

It’s not like Cleveland has the offense to take advantage of the shaky Dallas D.

The running game has been great, but the passing game has thrown for the second-fewest yards so far. Yes, the passing production isn’t there because the team spends so much time running, but Baker Mayfield is only connecting on 62% of his passes and isn’t hitting enough big throws.

Dallas is far better equipped to get into a shootout.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

QB Dak Prescott, Dallas
At least in fantasy world, Buffalo’s Josh Allen is on an epic tear, and Seattles’s Russell Wilson has been magnificent, but Dak has gone to another level this season, too.

Forget what Jerry Jones might have said about Prescott not being able to pull out a late win against Seattle like Tony Romo might have – fantasy owners don’t care. Two straight games with 450 passing yards or more, three rushing scores, five touchdown passes – he has been fantastic.

What’s Going To Happen

Dallas is one miracle against Atlanta away from being 0-3, but the team really is good. The Browns got the benefit of playing Cincinnati and Washington over the last two weeks, while Dallas has losses to the Rams and Seattle on the schedule.

This week, the Cowboys won’t have to deal with any drama. It’ll get up early, let Ezekiel Elliott and the running game work, and get out with a normal, non-miraculous win.

Cowboys News: Dak’s offense ‘explosive’ but isn’t living up to potential

The Dallas Cowboys news round-up ahead of their matchup with the Browns, including an injury update, predictions, and analysis from Week 3.

The Cowboys may not be off to the best start as a team, but Dak Prescott has looked worthy of every penny of his inevitable payday after the season. The 27-year old is on pace for over 6,000 yards, he’s finding the endzone, and he’s putting Dallas in position to have a shot in every game so far. Despite Prescott’s stellar play, the Cowboys defense and special teams haven’t held up their end of the bargain, explaining the Cowboy’s 1-2 record.

Injuries have also played a factor in the early season, and Week 4 is no different. While the Cowboys should have DeMarcus Lawrence against the Browns, Tyron Smith is questionable yet again, and the Browns have their fair share of players banged up. Smith’s status is as important to the Cowboys as anyone not named Prescott, especially considering fellow tackle La’el Collins’ return is further than previously predicted. Find the full injury report, Week 4 predictions, and analysis on the Cowboys three games so far.

Thursday Injury Report: Cowboys’ Smith progressing, Browns’ Beckham limited

An injury update for the Cowboys and Browns, including the status of Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs.

The Dallas Cowboys have been tormented by injuries through the first three games of the 2020 season. Fortunately two crucial, injured linemen in  Tyron Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence are progressing this week.

Lawrence didn’t practice for the second straight day as he has dealing with a knee injury that he suffered in the Week 2 win against Atlanta, but the team is expecting the defensive end will be suiting up for Sunday’s matchup with the Browns. Meanwhile Smith was upgraded from a DNP to Limited in Thursday’s work. Meanwhile, Cleveland is nursing a pretty extensive injury report for the day and that includes wideout Odell Beckhman, Jr. being limited with a back injury.

Head coach Mike McCarthy had this to say about Lawrence’s availability during a virtual press conference on Thursday: “He’ll take very little (reps) if any today. But I don’t think he’s in jeopardy. I anticipate him to kind of go through the week like he did last week. So we’ll see what today brings.”

Lawrence has played just 39 percent of the Cowboys’ defensive snaps since the season opener, way down from the roughly 65 percent of defensive snaps that he played in 2018 and 2019.

Despite not missing a game this season, the injury has clearly impacted the former Pro-Bowler’s abilities to stay, and produce, on the field. Lawrence’s one quarterback pressure through three weeks pale in comparison to the seven that the end accumulated through the same timespan just a season ago.

The Dallas defense doesn’t just need Lawrence to play, they need him to return to his dominant form that he’s played at in the past, if they want to have any chance of consistently slowing down the better offenses in the league.

On the other side of the trenches, Smith seems in line to line up for the first time since Week 1.

Smith was able to participate in individual drills during Wednesday’s practice, the most he had down in a Cowboys uniform since September 17 and seemed to duplicate the effort on Thursday.

It remains to be seen if Smith can give it a go this upcoming Sunday, but there is more optimism surrounding the topic than in the two previous weeks.

Smith’s return would be monumental for a Cowboys offensive line that has been unstable, to say the least. Fellow star tackle, La’el Collins, is yet to play this season and his return date, if there is a return, is yet to be determined.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have already used a staggering five different offensive line combinations, none of which have played up the standard of Dallas O-Lines of recent history.

If Smith is active Sunday, the Cowboys will decide between Brandon Knight and Terrence Steele for the right tackle spot. Based on their performances in each players short career it seems likely that Knight would get the nod over Steele. However, if Smith needs more time before he can play, Knight would once again man the left side, while Steele would slot back into the right tackle role.

Guard Zack Martin spent some second half of Dallas Week 3 loss to Seattle at right tackle, after Steele exited with an illness, and Martin did  extremely well, as expected. Martin made it clear that he’s back to playing guard, but the future Hall of Famer is ready for anything necessary.

Rookie cornerback Trevon Diggs popped up on the injury report as well, but it feels similar to last week, when the Cowboys took it easy on Diggs during the week and he played a full workload of snaps on Sunday.

The Cleveland Browns are dealing with their fair share of important ailments ahead of their trip to Dallas this weekend.

Beckham Jr appeared on his first injury report of the week with a back injury. Assuming he is able to play, he star wideout is set to match up with the Cowboys for the first time since leaving the Giants in 2018.

One of the better guards in the league, Joel Bitonio, was limited for the Browns on Thursday (back) but was an upgrade from his DNP on Wednesday.

Similarly to Bitonio, cornerback Denzel Ward (groin) was limited Thursday following a no show in practice the day before.

Running back Kareem Hunt (groin), safety Ronnie Harrison (illness), defensive end Adrian Clayborn (hip) were among the notable absences from Thursday’s practice in Cleveland.
