Valve announces Counter-Strike 2 will launch soon as a CS:GO update

Counter-Strike 2 is real, and Valve said it’s coming soon as a free update for the popular CS:GO multiplayer game

Counter-Strike 2 is real, and Valve said it’s coming soon as a free update for the popular CS: GO multiplayer game. Counter-Strike 2 will launch sometime in summer 2023, but if you’re keen to see what Valve has in store before then, you may have a chance. Valve is selecting some CS: GO players to test an early version of Counter-Strike 2 as the team evaluates a handful of features.

Despite having a “2” in the name, this isn’t the second Counter-Strike game and is more like Overwatch 2 in the sense that it’s largely a technical improvement over the original. Counter-Strike 2 will replace CS: GO when it launches in the summer and promises a number of improvements over CS:GO.

One small change that Valve hopes has substantial effects is how smoke behaves. In Counter-Strike 2, smoke will move, reflect, and billow more naturally, so you can use it to fill open spaces, cause confusion, and even distract enemies in buildings while you go about your business.

Old maps received a glow-up with new rendering effects, while some brand-new maps showcase the engine’s new light and read abilities. Maps are brighter and cleaner, though classic maps remain largely unchanged aside from lighting and a few other effects.

Valve also said Counter-Strike 2 runs on improved servers that log actions as soon as they take place, instead of recognizing actions at set intervals of time, or in “ticks.” The hope is that the FPS game will run more smoothly and be more responsive as a result. There’s no set release date for the Counter-Strike 2 update, and given the way Valve operates, they’ll probably announce the date seemingly at random one day when no one expects it.

Hafthor ‘The Mountain’ Bjornsson says Counter-Strike is his all-time favorite game

The world’s strongest man and Game Of Thrones star has spent lots of time with CS:GO.

Perhaps the most instantly-recognizable figure in Game of Thrones was Hafthor’ The Mountain’ Bjornsson, at least in terms of sheer size and physicality. The multiple-time international strongman champion loves a good firefight on de_dust2 as well, apparently.

According to Dexerto, Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo is chest-deep in a fitness program with Twitch’s body-building aficionado Knut. In an exciting twist, Rinaudo is regularly rubbing elbows with none other than Bjornsson while training, who revealed what his favorite video game ever was in a video.

“So, my all-time favorite, like when I think about what I’ve played the most in my life, is Counter-Strike,” Bjornsson said. “I was a B player.”

There’s footage from this exchange in the clip below.

In Counter-Strike, being a ‘B player’ means someone who protects critical areas during defensive rounds from attackers. It’s one of the more challenging roles in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, so Bjornsson isn’t a pushover. Though Pedro Pascal probably could’ve told you that — no, I will not elaborate on this. If you know, you know!

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is often considering one of the best first-person shooters ever, especially in a competitive sense.

‘Counter-Strike’ pro Aleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev gets his own documentary

S1imple Formula chronicles the rise and career of arguably CS:GO’s biggest star.

Aleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev is one of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s most decorated players, and a new documentary just came out highlighting his career.

S1mple Formula, produced by Kostyliev’s team NAVI, is a documentary chronicling his path towards professional Counter-Strike and what sets him apart from other players. It includes interviews with former and current teammates, coaches, friends, commentators, analysts, and Kostyliev’s family. Clocking in at just shy of two hours, S1mple Formula is a staggeringly thorough look at one of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s biggest stars.

“I remember the time when we just signed a contract in 2016,” Yevhen Zolotarov, СЕО of NAVI, said via Dot Esports. “Honestly, now it’s hard to believe that it was already five years ago. For the esports industry, five years is quite a long period of time.”

Check out the teaser for S1imple Formula for yourself below.

The full documentary is on YouTube for those willing to learn all about the life and trials of this legendary player.

We don’t see profiles for esports stars all that often, so here’s to hoping this is just the first of many.
