Falcons bringing back CB Cornell Armstrong on one-year deal

The #Falcons are bringing back CB Cornell Armstrong on a one-year deal, per his agent

It appears the Atlanta Falcons are bringing back cornerback Cornell Armstrong for another season. As reported by Armstrong’s agent, Brett Tessler, the Falcons have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the former sixth-round pick.

Armstrong, 27, started four games for the team last season, playing mostly on the outside once A.J. Terrell and Casey Hayward were both sidelined due to injuries.

In 2022, Armstrong allowed 28 catches on 46 targets for 333 yards and two touchdowns. While he had some ups and downs in coverage, Armstrong only missed one tackle last season (PFF tackle grade of 81.2).

For a team without much depth at cornerback, Armstrong’s return is not a surprise. After losing Isaiah Oliver to the 49ers, the Falcons are reportedly meeting with free-agent CB Mike Hughes this weekend.

Falcons to sign CB Cornell Armstrong to practice squad

Armstrong, 26, played at Southern Miss before being drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins in 2018.

The Atlanta Falcons lost starting cornerback Fabian Moreau to an ankle injury during Sunday’s 30-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Arthur Smith wasn’t sure about Moreau’s status for Week 14 when asked about it on Monday, but it appears the team is signing another cornerback to the practice squad.

Free agent Cornell Armstrong will be added to the Falcons’ practice squad, according to his agent, Brett Tessler:

Armstrong, 26, played at Southern Miss before being drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins in 2018. After playing 15 games with the Dolphins as a rookie, he spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Houston Texans.

Primarily used on special teams, Armstrong has recorded 12 tackles (11 solo) over the past three seasons.

Texans sign kicker Joey Slye, waive cornerback Cornell Armstrong

The Houston Texans have signed kicker Joey Slye and waived cornerback Cornell Armstrong.

The Houston Texans may have shown their hand as to how kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn may be feeling for the Week 1 encounter with the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at NRG Stadium.

The team announced Tuesday they have signed former Carolina Panthers kicker Joey Slye. In a corresponding move, the Texans waived cornerback Cornell Armstrong.

Fairbairn had an injury during the pregame warmups in the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 28. Coach David Culley said that if it were a regular season game, Fairbairn would have been able to go.

With the club working out Slye and Michael Badgley on Monday, and then signing Slye on Tuesday, it is an indication that the club is not taking the injury with Fairbairn too lightly.

Slye was 54-of-68 on field goals for the Panthers in 32 games with 64 extra points on 71 attempts. The former Virginia Tech Hokie also booted 137 touchbacks on 151 kickoffs.

The Panthers released Slye on Aug. 28 after trading for kicker Ryan Santoso.

Texans waive CB Cornell Armstrong and LB Tae Davis

The Houston Texans announced they have waived cornerback Cornell Armstrong and linebacker Tae Davis.

The Houston Texans announced they have waived linebacker Tae Davis and cornerback Cornell Armstrong as part of their attempt to get to 53 players on their final roster before 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Aug. 31.

The Texans also announced the trading of defensive end Shaq Lawson to the New York Jets. The three moves put the Texans at 76 players on their active roster. It is worth mentioning that offensive tackle Marcus Cannon and guard Lane Taylor are still on the physically unable to perform list, and receiver Taywan Taylor is on the injured reserve.

Houston still has 23 more moves to make to get at 53 men. They don’t have to necessarily make 23 cuts; as proven with the Lawson trade, they can dispense players through that method, too. Players on the injured reserve won’t count against the active roster, and neither will players on the physically unable to perform list — at least not for the first six weeks.

S Lonnie Johnson among 3 Texans activated from non-football injury list

The Houston Texans had three players activated from the non-football injury list, including safety Lonnie Johnson.

The Houston Texans had three players come off the non-football injury list on Tuesday just in time for the team’s first padded practice of training camp.

Safety Lonnie Johnson, cornerback Cornell Armstrong, and tight end Pharaoh Brown were able to come off NFI and join the team for the sixth practice on day seven of training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center.

The injuries for Johnson, Armstrong, and Brown weren’t disclosed.

With the pads coming on as the trio hops off the NFI list, safety Justin Reid describes Tuesday’s practice as being akin to the first day of school.

“It’s like the first day of school,” Reid said on Aug. 2. “It’s exciting. We all know that what we have been doing the last couple of days has been a whole lot of fun but real football gets played when the pads get put on. So we get to see what everybody got starting [Tuesday].”

Texans re-sign CB Cornell Armstrong to 1-year contract

The Houston Texans are re-signing cornerback Cornell Armstrong to a 1-year contract per his agent Brett Tessler.

The Houston Texans continue to make moves to keep reliable players in place amid an offseason of upheaval.

According to Brett Tessler, the Texans are re-signing his client, cornerback Cornell Armstrong to a one-year contract.

The one-year deal is worth $1.25 million, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. The signing bonus on the contract is $100,000.

Signing Armstrong to his new contract is cheaper than the $2.133 million tender the Texans would have had to apply to the 6-0, 185-pound cornerback from Southern Mississippi.

Armstrong has been with the Texans since 2019. The Miami Dolphins originally drafted him in Round 6 of the 2018 draft. In 15 career games with Houston, Armstrong has provided four combined tackles. His primary usage is on special teams where he has played 237 snaps compared to 54 on defense.

The Houston Texans announced their inactives ahead of their Week 10 game with the Cleveland Browns, and receiver Keke Coutee is down.

The Houston Texans announced their inactives ahead of their Week 10 encounter with the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Receiver Keke Coutee was declared inactive. Joining him healthy scratches were quarterback Josh McCown, cornerback Cornell Armstrong, and receiver Isaiah Coulter.

Guard Senio Kelemete was declared out on Friday with a concussion. Defensive end Charles Omenihu was declared out on Saturday with a hamstring injury.

For the Browns, their inactives include receiver Taywan Taylor, running back Dontrell Hilliard, cornerback Robert Jackson, safety Jovante Moffatt, linebacker Jacob Phillips, and defensive end Joe Jackson.

Texans S A.J. Moore, CB Cornell Armstrong cover Mississippi hometown after tornado damage

Houston Texans safety A.J. Moore and cornerback Cornell Armstrong teamed up to help their tornado ravaged hometown of Bassfield, Mississippi.

One aspect that fans and media judge defensive backs by is their coverage.

Houston Texans safety A.J. Moore and cornerback Cornell Armstrong are excelling at their coverage off the field. The two teammates distributed boxes of supplies to help their hometown of Bassfield, Mississippi, where four people died from tornadoes that hit on April 13.

Moore and Armstrong also teamed up with Detroit Lions safety C.J. Moore, who is A.J.’s twin brother and also from the town of 300 people.

Markeeth Taylor, who is based in Mississippi and has been representing the Moore brothers, knows just how much the residents appreciated the homegrown NFL players supplying food and toiletries at Jefferson Davis High School on Friday.

“It was good, and you could tell the people there really appreciated it and are in good spirits” Taylor said via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “Everything was in order. To have gone through what they’re dealing with along with the pandemic, they were very upbeat. One thing about Mississippi: We’re known as the hospitality state. Everyone is helping everyone to get back on their feet. This is deeply personal for all of them.”

The Moore brothers’ mother also sustained injuries during the severe weather event as she broke her foot along with cuts and bruises. In addition to damaging her home, the storm also overturned her vehicle. Their father was hospitalized after he broke his ankle, ribs, and suffered internal bleeding.

“Everybody is keeping in good spirits, knowing we’re all in this together and we’re all going to work together to help get them back on their feet,” Armstrong said. “Bassfield is a very small town. Everyone is like family.”
