USC commit Corey Simms no longer expected to visit Nebraska

A Nebraska target is no longer visiting Lincoln this weekend.

Earlier this week, it was expected that University of Southern California wide receiver commitment and Missouri native Corey Simms would visit the Huskers for their matchup against Rutgers. That is no longer the case.

According to Adam Gorney of Rivals, Simms is no longer expected to make the trip to Lincoln this weekend and instead is planning to visit USC next weekend when the Trojans play host to Penn State.

Rivals rank Simms as a four-star prospect and a borderline top-100 prospect, being ranked No. 107 nationally. The recruiting service also ranks Simms as the No. 20 wide receiver in the country.

In late June, Simms chose the Trojans over Missouri, Penn State, and Nebraska, among others.

The Huskers hold 19 commitments in their 2025 recruiting class, including a trio of wide receiver commitments from Isaiah Mozee, Tanner Terch, and Bryson Hayes.

One detail of Corey Simms recruitment magnifies USC and Lincoln Riley

In most years, one aspect of USC’s Corey Simms recruitment would not have registered on a national scale. This is not a normal year.

USC beat out Penn State in the recruitment of wide receiver Corey Simms, but it’s the other school the Trojans beat out for the St. Louis-based receiver which adds to this particular football recruiting success story for Lincoln Riley and the Trojans.

In most years, we wouldn’t give a second thought to the fact that USC beat out Missouri for a prominent player. Missouri has usually been an average program in college football. The Tigers have had some exceptionally great seasons in the 21st century, specifically 2007, 2013, and 2014, but in most years, Missouri is not a major national player in college football. That, however, changed last year when the Tigers made the Cotton Bowl and defeated Ohio State. The Tigers had a terrific season and are widely viewed as a legitimate threat — more so than USC — for the 2024 College Football Playoff. For USC to therefore go into St. Louis and beat Mizzou for Corey Simms is an impressive recruiting win, certainly more than what we would normally assign to a win over Missouri in most years.

Watch 4-star WR Corey Simms mess with crowd before announcing USC commitment

USC got the commitment of four-star wide receiver Corey Simms, who had some fun at the crowd’s expense before announcing his decision.

Four-star wide receiver Corey Simms, in an auditorium that appeared to have over 100 people watching, gave a little show before sharing which college he is committing to.

He had the hats of each of his top-three programs — USC, Missouri and Penn State — laid out on the table in front of him. One by one, he picked them up, feigned putting them on, and then took them off. Last was hometown Mizzou, as he stood up with the hat on his head before taking it off.

Simms pulled out a new cap, unzipped his jacket, and showed the world: It was the USC Trojans.

Simms, a Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, Mo.) receiver, announced his commitment to USC shortly after his junior year concluded. He had a strong football season, recording 79 receptions for 1,046 yards and 13 touchdowns, along with two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six, on the defensive end, according to his Hudl highlight pacakge.

Simms is ranked on the 247Sports Composite as the No. 33 receiver in the class of 2025 and third-best player in the state. He had 35 offers and had visited each of Penn State, Missouri and USC since May 31.

The receiver told On3 that the vision of wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons and the weather were among the factors of his decision. He added that he feels like he “fit(s) in with the USC family.”

“Coach Simmons said they’re gonna throw the ball, they have great academics, a great support system and it feels like home,” Simms said to the recruiting outlet. “And it’s not really that cold here in the winter. When I was there in the winter, they said that’s the coldest it gets there. It’s amazing.”

The Trojans’ recruiting class of 2025, headlined by quarterback Julian Lewis, now has 12 commits. The class is ranked No. 21 in the country.

Corey Simms is down to three schools with a June commitment coming in

Corey Simms is down to three schools ahead of his late June commitment.

Four-star wide receiver Corey Simms now has a final three schools, with an announcement expected at the end of the month.

Ranked the No. 89 recruit in the nation by Rivals a four-star in the On3 Industry Rankings, Simms is a class of 2025 wide receiver from Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, Missouri).

He tells On3 that he is down to three schools (Missouri, Penn State and USC) with a looming commitment coming on June 30. He is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound wide receiver with an impressive catch radius.

Last season, he finished with 1,079 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 79 receptions. He was a pivotal piece of a Christian Brothers program that is a juggernaut in Missouri. Last season, the Cadets finished this past season 13-1 and won a state championship.

Simms took an official visit to Penn State in late May. He followed that up with visits to USC last weekend and now a scheduled in-state official the weekend of June 21.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine is giving Missouri the heavy edge in landing the in-state prospect.

Missouri is favored to land Corey Simms, with USC in the race

Missouri’s improvement under Eli Drinkwitz matters in this recruitment.

Four-star 2025 Saint Louis wide receiver Corey Simms has narrowed down his list of schools to three including USC, Penn State and Missouri. His commitment date is set for June 30 per Hayes Fawcett.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Simms is rated a four-star in the 247Sports composite, the No. 262 overall prospect, the No. 5 player in the state of Missouri, and the No. 32 receiver in the class.

Simmis helped his team win a state title, catching 79 passes for 1,049 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.

Last month, Nebraska was the favorite to land Simms. Now it seems that the front-runner to land the Missouri native is his home state team, the Missouri Tigers. Missouri is a preseason top-15 team with a realistic shot at making the College Football Playoff. Missouri’s rise under coach Eli Drinkwitz is a clear and undeniable reason for Missouri’s prominence in this recruitment and other national recruitments the Tigers wouldn’t have had a sniff at several years ago. It will be fascinating to see if USC can change the dynamic of this recruitment.

Four-star WR puts Penn State in his final three schools

Nittany Lions make final three for Saint Louis 4-star wide receiver

Penn State got some good news on the recruiting front Wednesday afternoon when 4-star receiver [autotag]Corey Simms[/autotag] released his top-3 schools, with Penn State being one of the finalists.

The Saint Louis native’s final three are his hometown, Missouri, USC and Penn State. Simms officially visited Penn State on May 31 and visited USC last week.

When talking to On3’s Chad Simmons a few months back, Simms suggested many people around him want him to stay close to home, so it seems likely that the Tigers are the top option.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Simms talked about the Nittany Lions but didn’t offer extensive details on his visit.

“I enjoyed having my family come out to meet the coaches and get a feel for the school and environment. The official visit was all we expected, plus more.”

According to the 247Sports Composite, Simms is the No. 32 receiver prospect in the class of 2025 and the No. 3 player from Missouri. In addition to announcing his final three schools, Simms set his commitment date for June 30.

Penn State’s 2025 recruiting class has only one wide receiver commit in 3-star [autotag]Lyrick Samuel[/autotag]. The Nittany Lions seem like the second-place team at the moment, but a Simms commitment would be huge for next year’s class.

Four-star receiver has USC as one of three finalists

One other Big Ten school is battling USC here.

Four-star receiver Corey Simms is down to three schools: USC, Penn State, and Missouri. The 2025 receiver from St. Louis has clearly become more impressed with USC over the course of this recruitment.

Trojans Wire recruiting writer Don James pointed out a few details in early April:

“Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, Kansas, Miami, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee and USC are the top 12.

“USC receiver coach Dennis Simmons and head coach Lincoln Riley offered Simms back in January. His visit on June 7 could be what lands the Missouri native with the Trojans. Nebraska is the current favorite to land Simms at the moment.”

The fact that Simms previously had a list of 12 schools shows that he has been patient in whittling down his list. It is also notable that Nebraska, previously viewed as the favorite, didn’t even make the next to last cut of this recruitment. Things change all the time in recruiting. Now let’s see if USC can close the sale.

Info coming out of Penn State’s first official visit weekend

Penn State had a busy weekend of recruiting with a number of official visits from top recruiting targets.

Penn State entered its first official visit weekend that just wrapped up with many of the top targets coming to Happy Valley to get a better look at the program.

As one of the first dates on the calendar for multiple recruits in this crop, this served as an important time for the Nittany Lions to cement themselves at the top of the board, or to ensure they stay in consideration as more trips are taken.

Even though there is still time for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and his staff to continue to working on gaining commitments, they ideally will start adding to their tally of 13 to fortify their 2025 class.

Because this was such an important weekend, information coming out from different prospects who made the trip is paramount in determining who is a realistic target at this point and who might be taken off the board heading into the upcoming official visits still on the calendar.

Sean Fitz of On3 was able to gather some intel and share what he’s heard so far from players coming out of this trip (subscription required).

Close to Commitment

There has been an expectation for a while that Penn State would eventually land instate wide receiver [autotag]Lex Cyrus[/autotag] who is rated as a four-star recruit. He’s taken six trips to Happy Valley, the most out of any school, and is one of their top priorities.

Fitz seems to think that’s coming as he said he’s close to putting an official pick in for the Nittany Lions to land the speedster.

Cyrus is taking an official visit to South Carolina this upcoming weekend, the other program who is really in the mix to land him, however, Penn State has done a good job throughout this process and could be gaining another receiver commitment soon.

Feeling Good

Some of the Nittany Lions’ top defensive back targets made their way to campus this weekend, and information is coming out that they were able to stay in good standing as the recruits left.

Four-star cornerback [autotag]Brandon Finney[/autotag] became a priority and it seems like Penn State is in good standing following this weekend even as he has more trips on his calendar.

Fitz said that the visit from [autotag]Antonio Branch[/autotag] went really well and the Nittany Lions are still at the top of his board saying that a decision could be coming soon and that he’s been close to locking in a commitment with Penn State.

What might have been the most important development is regarding four-star Texas linebacker [autotag]Max Granville[/autotag]. Fitz reports that the Nittany Lions are feeling “very good” about where they stand in his recruitment right now. It’s going to be a battle holding off USC, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M as he’s set to visit those campuses, but they like where they’re at following his visit.

Positive Buzz

Consensus four-star corner [autotag]Graceson Littleton[/autotag] seemed like bit of a longshot entering this official visit, but it seems like they made another good impression on the Florida native prior to him heading out to see Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa.

Elite wide receiver [autotag]Quincy Porter[/autotag] made his way for an important visit, and despite some pessimism that he actually views Penn State as a viable option with Michigan and Ohio State recruiting him hard, this trip seemed to have landed well for the No. 46 player in this class.

One of their other top wide receiver targets [autotag]Corey Simms[/autotag] reportedly had a “really good weekend” as he likes the staff and enjoyed his trip to Happy Valley. He’s always been viewed as a longshot, but this certainly helped their chances.

Closing Thoughts

Overall, there wasn’t much to suggest the Nittany Lions are going to secure commitments in the upcoming days, but that has rarely happened for this program during the first major official visit weekend.

Outside of Cyrus and Branch, who already seemed close to picking Penn State, there isn’t certainty that they’re going to land many of the recruits who were on campus.

However, they certainly made a good impression on many of their top targets, one of the main goals anytime the Nittany Lions host prospects in an official capacity, and that could loom large throughout the remainder of their processes.

LSU makes top 12 for 2025 4-star WR Corey Simms

LSU joins a blue chip-heavy final 12 for St. Louis receiver Corey Simms.

One of the top wide receivers in the 2025 recruiting class has narrowed his list of final schools down to just 12. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers are one of those 12.

[autotag]Corey Simms[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound, four-star wide receiver from Saint Louis where he plays for Christian Brothers High School. The Christian Brothers Cadets finished the 2023 season 11-3 with a loss to Liberty North in the Class 6 State Championship Game.

LSU joins Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, USC, Penn State, Ole Miss, Michigan, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Arkansas as the final 12 schools in contention for the talented prospect.

There are no Crystal Ball projections at this time for Simms, but the Missouri Tigers are a 39% favorite to land him per On3. LSU currently has the No. 2 overall recruiting class for 2025 according to On3. The class is headlined by the No. 1 wide receiver, [autotag]Dakorien Moore[/autotag], and the No. 1 quarterback [autotag]Bryce Underwood[/autotag] in the class.
