Divisional playoff preview: How the Rams can beat the Buccaneers

For the Rams to beat the Bucs and head to the NFC Championship Game, these three things are of paramount importance.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a time this season when Rams head coach Sean McVay was happier than he was after his team’s 34-24 Week 3 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers. The Rams had traded Jared Goff, two first-round picks, and a third-round pick to the Lions for Matthew Stafford, and this was one instance in which Stafford’s plus-level attributes showed up en masse. McVay had grown tired of Goff hitting his head on his own ceiling, but with Stafford, the Rams had nothing but blue sky, as he completed 27 of 38 passes for 343 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 134.0.

Stafford bombed the Bucs’ depleted secondary for three completions on five attempts of 20 or more air yards for 117 yards and a touchdown, and this as close to McVay’s ideal vision for his passing game as you’ll ever see.

“What he’s done through three games, I think his resumé speaks for itself,” the giddy coach said after the game. “He’s done a great job through these three games. And that’s all he can really do. I think he’s just seamlessly accommodated himself or really acclimated himself to being in our building. His teammates love him. His coaches love him. And he just goes about his business. He’s so steady, so consistent. And I just thought he got better as the game progressed. And, you know, love working with him.”

Stafford has had his ups and downs since, and there are clear things about his game that can be countered, but if he’s able to put together a similar performance, and everything else breaks as it did for the Rams in Week 3, there’s a pretty good chance that McVay is about to dethrone the champs and head back to the NFC Championship game for the first time since the 2018 season.

Here’s what the Rams should do in a schematic sense to ensure that the second verse is the same as the first. .

3 Rams selected as first-team All-Pros, only team with 2 unanimous picks

Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey represent the Rams as first-team All-Pro selections, with Kupp and Donald being unanimous picks

The Los Angeles Rams sent four players to the Pro Bowl this year, with at least one player representing the offense, defense and special teams. As great of an honor as that is for Jalen Ramsey, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Matt Gay, All-Pro selections carry even more weight.

The Associated Press announced its All-Pro teams on Friday ahead of this weekend’s playoff games and three Rams were selected: Ramsey, Kupp and Donald.

Donald and Kupp were unanimous selections, joining Jonathan Taylor, T.J. Watt and Davante Adams as the only five players to earn that distinction. Those five players were chosen as All-Pros by all 50 voters.

This is Donald’s seventh consecutive first-team All-Pro selection, adding to his already-impressive resume as a future Hall of Famer. He’s deserving of Defensive Player of the Year honors, but with T.J. Watt also being a unanimous All-Pro selection, that award is bound to come down to the wire.

Ramsey is a first-team All-Pro for the third time, and for the second straight year. He’s been a star for the Rams since being acquired by Los Angeles in 2019, playing boundary corner and nickel defender in the last two-plus years. He received the second-most votes (32) at cornerback, one vote fewer than Trevon Diggs (33) of the Cowboys.

Kupp earns All-Pro honors for the first time in his career, doing so in spectacular fashion as the league’s leader in receptions, yards and touchdown catches. Like Donald and Watt, the race for Offensive Player of the Year will be a dead heat between Kupp and Taylor.

Matt Gay and Johnny Hekker were the only other Rams players to receive votes for All-Pro, earning one vote each.

Kliff Kingsbury knows how tough Cooper Kupp is to contain: ‘Nobody’s slowed him down’

Kliff Kingsbury knows it’s not going to be easy to slow down Cooper Kupp in Monday’s Rams-Cardinals game

In all but one game this season, Cooper Kupp racked up at least 90 yards receiving. He had 100-plus yards in 11 games and scored 16 total touchdowns, finishing as the league’s leader in receptions, yards and touchdown catches.

His worst game of the season came against the Cardinals in Week 4 when he caught five passes for 64 yards. The fact that 64 yards was his floor tells you just how dominant he was, putting up big numbers each and every week.

Kliff Kingsbury knows just how difficult he is to contain, even after the Cardinals managed to do so in their first meeting of the season. It’ll take a team effort by Arizona in the wild-card round, and even when Kupp is contained, he’s still going to get his yards and catches.

“Nobody’s slowed him down,” Kingsbury told reporters Wednesday, via the Rams’ official site. “He’s got his numbers every week, regardless of coverages or player or whatever people have been trying to do to stop him. And so that’s a credit to him. He has such a great feel for the game, great understanding of their system, great understanding of how to create space and separation. I just can’t say enough good things about him. So it’s going to be a group effort trying to slow him down, but you know he’s going to get his. You just gotta try to contain it as best as you can.”

After being slowed down by Arizona in Week 4, Kupp bounced back with a big game against the Cardinals 10 weeks later. He caught 13 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown against them on Dec. 13, catching all but two of his targets from Matthew Stafford.

Kupp has proved capable of producing no matter the coverage or cornerback across from him, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t catch another seven passes for 90-plus yards on Monday night against the Cardinals.

Sterling Sharpe and Steve Smith share high praise for Cooper Kupp after winning triple crown

Cooper Kupp received a message from two legends for becoming the 4th WR to win the triple crown in the Super Bowl era

Cooper Kupp may not have broken the single-season receiving record, but he did accomplish an incredibly rare feat this year. He finished the season as the league leader in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and touchdown catches (16), becoming the first player since Steve Smith in 2005 to finish first in all three categories.

Kupp is just the fourth receiver in the Super Bowl era to win the triple crown, joining Sterling Sharpe, Jerry Rice and Smith as the only players to do it. The gap between Kupp and every other receiver was pretty wide, too, making this a season for the record books.

As the newest member of the triple crown club, Kupp was welcomed by Smith and Sharpe, who each shared a message for the Rams receiver congratulating him on his historic campaign.

“I’m so proud of you, not because I’ve done anything, but because I know what kind of player you are,” Smith said.

“I know every catch, every yard and every touchdown you scored was not only to help your team get into the playoffs, but to have a chance to hoist that Lombardi Trophy. You’re an outstanding route runner. You have sensational hands and I want to congratulate you and I want to thank your teammates for helping you be the 2021 receiving champ,” Sharpe added.

3 Rams named to PFF’s All-Pro team

Three players stood out in a big way for the Rams this season and earned All-Pro honors from Pro Football Focus

The Rams didn’t go 12-5 in the regular season because of just three players, but Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey were major factors in the team’s success this year. All three were selected to the Pro Bowl after putting together impressive campaigns that slot each player among the best at their respective positions.

Pro Football Focus has graded Donald, Kupp and Ramsey all highly this season and it’s no surprise that they were each selected to the site’s All-Pro team. They were the only three Rams chosen, with Matthew Stafford being edged out by Tom Brady and Joe Burrow at quarterback, and Matt Gay coming up short behind Justin Tucker and Jake Elliott at kicker.

Kupp was an obvious choice at wide receiver, being selected alongside Davante Adams – which is how the Associated Press’s All-Pro selections are expected to go.

Kupp threatened a handful of single-season receiving records this year, finishing with 145 catches, 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns from 188 targetsMatthew Stafford’s impact on the Rams’ offense has had no greater effect than pouring gas on the kind of production Kupp was already capable of. He is the only receiver in the NFL to average over three yards per route run (3.12), a threshold typically reserved for Julio Jones in his prime. Kupp also produced one of the best catch rates in the league, bringing in 93.5% of catchable passes.

Donald was productive all season but he really came on in the second half of the season with some truly spectacular performances. PFF points out that he wasn’t the highest-graded interior defender at one point this season, but he had 34 pressures in a four-game span, which was more than the Falcons had as a team in that same stretch.

Ramsey and A.J. Terrell were selected as the All-Pro corners by PFF, deservingly so. Ramsey tied a career-high with four interceptions and set a new personal best with nine tackles for a loss, one more than he had in his previous five seasons combined.

Ramsey enjoyed his best season since his career year in Jacksonville back in 2017. He did so in a new role that saw him play in the slot far more than in the past in an attempt by the Rams to make it harder for opposing offenses to avoid one of their best defensive playmakers. Ramsey allowed 63.4% of passes thrown his way to be caught, but that figure is always higher for slot defenders, and he countered that with 16 forced incompletions and 17 defensive stops in coverage.

All three of these players should be selected as AP All-Pros when the teams are revealed in the coming weeks. They’ve been the best players at their positions and are a huge reason the Rams won the NFC West.

The Huddle Awards

Draft slots were taken from the Average Draft at MyFantasyLeague. Standard performance scoring with reception points were considered.

QUARTERBACK

Best Player –  Josh Allen

There wasn’t a lot of difference between any of the Top-4 quarterbacks – Tom Brady, Justin Herbert, and Patrick Mahomes included, but Allen ends up as the No. 1 fantasy quarterback for the second year in a row. Yes, more than Patrick Mahomes who will still be drafted before Allen.

Runner-up:  Justin Herbert

Best Draft Pick –   Joe Burrow, No. 13 QB Drafted

He was taken as a backup as the No. 13 quarterback drafted but he ended with  the No. 7 highest points and got better in the second half of the year with several monster games. He’s a difference-maker who should be better in 2022 with a dangerous trio of wideouts.

Runner-up:   Jalen Hurts, No. 12 QB Drafted

Best Rookie –  Mac Jones

He only ended as the No. 18 fantasy quarterback but he fit  very well into the Patriots’ system and he far outplayed the other four quarterbacks that were drafted before him.

Runner-up:  Trevor Lawrence

Worst Draft Pick –  Lamar Jackson, No. 4 QB drafted

He had plenty of big games but missed five weeks in all and has been out since Week 14 when you needed him most.

Runner-up:   Russell Wilson

Best Free Agent –  Taylor Heinicke

There wasn’t any surprise quarterback that wasn’t drafted last summer but ended up as a starter quality player. Heinicke ended as the No. 19 fantasy quarterback and had a few plug-in opportunities where he didn’t kill you. Very rare that fantasy leagues miss drafting an eventual starter.

Runner-up:  Mac Jones

Best Game – Justin Herbert, Week 5 vs. CLE

44.8 FF Pts. – Rush: 4-29, TD Pass: 26-43-398, 4 TD

Runner-up: 44.3 FF Pts. – Lamar Jackson, Week 5 vs. IND

RUNNING BACK

Best Player –  Jonathan Taylor

After Derrick Henry finally had to pull over and pop the hood, Taylor was the clone that stepped up by rushing for 100 yards in ten games and scored 20 touchdowns. He ended with an NFL-high 1,811 rushing yards – almost 600 more yards than any other rusher.

Runner-up: Austin Ekeler

Best Draft Pick –  James Conner, No. 38 RB Drafted

Argue all you want about Chase Edmonds, it was Conner who would become the back to own. He only totaled 1,127 yards but scored 18 touchdowns and never had a bad game since Week 3 until he was injured in Week 16.

Runner-up:  Leonard Fournette, No. 34 RB Drafted

Best Rookie –  Najee Harris

It wasn’t close. But Harris was the only rookie back drafted with the intention to be a workhorse in a one-back offense. Harris ended as the No. 3 fantasy running back and ran for 1,200 yards and caught 74 passes for 467 yards and ten total touchdowns. Not bad for a rookie that was taken mid-second round in most fantasy drafts.

Runner-up:   Javonte Williams

Worst Draft Pick –  Christian McCaffery, No. 1 RB Drafted

The scary part of this is that McCaffrey and Barkley were the exact same Top-2 busts last year. Maybe neither deserve to be a Top-5 fantasy pick. But they probably will.

Runner-up:  Saquon Barkley

Best Free Agent –  Elijah Mitchell

As someone who spent the money to get Trey Sermon on my dynasty team, it only took one week to say, “I’m sorry, what???”  Mitchell was the 6.10 pick of the 49ers and proved to be everything they wanted when they took Sermon. Mitchell had a few durability issues, but when he played he was golden. He was good enough that the 49ers trashed their usual committee approach.

Runner-up: Devonta Freeman

Best Game – Jonathan Taylor, Week 11 vs. BUF

53.4 FF Pts. – Rush 32-185 4 TD, Receive 3-19 TD

Runner-up: 47.7 FF Pts.  – Derrick Henry, Week 2 vs. SEA

WIDE RECEIVER

Best Player –   Cooper Kupp

He fell short of the receptions record by four catches, and missed the all-time mark in receiving yards by only 17 yards. But he went from 92 catches for 974 yards and three scores in 2020, to 145 receptions for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was on more than a few fantasy champion’s rosters. And he was 93.2 fantasy points ahead of Davante Adams.

Runner-up:  Davante Adams

Best Draft Pick –  Deebo Samuel, No. 35 WR Drafted

Remember back last year? When Brandon Aiyuk was the hot receiver for the 49ers and Samuel was the oft-injured wideout with only 33 catches for 391 yards and one score? What a difference a year makes. He caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards, ran 59 times for 365 yards and scored 14 times. He threw a touchdown pass on Sunday. He should be called Gumby because he’s comfortable in any position.

Runner-up: Ja’Marr Chase, No. 28 WR Drafted

Best Rookie –  Ja’Marr Chase

Yep. Dropping all those passes in the summer while saying the lack of a white stripe on an NFL ball was an issue. Well, he got better pretty fast. Good enough to rank as the No. 5 fantasy wideout with 81 catches for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns. He went cool for a stretch in midseason but anyone that delivers 55.6 fantasy points in Week 17 is forever a legend.

Runner-up:  Jaylen Waddle

Worst Draft Pick –  DeAndre Hopkins, No. 4 WR Drafted

He did score eight times this year, but Hopkins only caught 42 passes for 572 yards and missed six games. He never gained 100 yards in any game and was all but gone for the second half of the season.

Runner-up:  Calvin Ridley, No. 5 WR Drafted

Best Free Agent –  Cordarrelle Patterson

Granted, the hybrid receiver/rusher/returner cooled significantly in the final month of the season, but he was a difference-maker that was scraped from every waiver wire and delivered until Week 15 when the whole pumpkin/glass slipper thing went sideways.

Runner-up:  Hunter Renfro

Best Game – Ja’Marr Chase, Week 17, vs. KC
55.6 FF Pts. – 11-266, 3 TD

Runner-up: 47.6 FF Pts., Tyreek Hill, Week 4, vs. PHI

TIGHT END

Best Player –   Mark Andrews

He unseated Travis Kelce from the top spot for the first time in six years. Andrews finished with 107 catches for 1,361 yards and nine touchdowns. Best yet, he got better as the season progressed and spent the last month with around eight catches per week and topped 100 yards three times in a row starting in Week 14.

Runner-up: Travis Kelce

Best Draft Pick –    Mark Andrews, No. 6 TE drafted

There are so few tight ends that make a difference, and grabbing the best of the position usually around the start of the fifth round helped his owners build a better team for the first four rounds.

Runner Up: Zach Ertz

Best Rookie –  Kyle Pitts

Anything short of being the top rookie tight end would have been a bitter disappointment after he was taken with the Falcons 1.04 pick. For a position that is notorious with never having any rookies matter, Pitts ended with 68 catches for 1,026 yards but only one touchdown. He’ll be better in 2022 and he ended as the No. 2 rookie tight end in yardage in NFL history.

Runner-up: Pat Freiermuth

Worst Draft Pick – Darren Waller, No. 2 TE drafted

So few difference-makers so it cost an earlier pick to take one of the top in the position. After back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons, Waller missed six games and stumbled through most of the rest. He ended as the No. 18 fantasy tight end with 55 catches for 665 yards and two scores.

Runner-up: T.J. Hockenson

Best Free Agent –  Dalton Schultz

The Cowboys offense was so stocked with wideouts, that Schultz was left on the waiver wire in almost every league. That did not last long when he caught two scores and gained 80 yards in Week 3. Schultz went on to become the No. 3 fantasy tight end with 78 catches for 808 yards and nine touchdowns – tied for No. 1 in the position.

Runner-up:     Dawson Knox

Best Game – Travis Kelce, Week 15, vs. LAC
41.1 FF Pts, 10-191, 2 TD

Runner-up: George Kittle, Week 13 vs. SEA 39.6 FF Pts.

Huddle player of the year

Cooper Kupp – Every position has top players, but none of the the other No. 1 players had 21% more fantasy points then the second guy in their position. And Kupp was a fourth-round pick in most leagues.  He turned in 20+ fantasy points in 14 games. He scored 30 fantasy points in six games. He was the difference-maker that every fantasy team wants but only one gets.

Cooper Kupp wins receiving triple crown but falls short of Calvin Johnson’s record

Cooper Kupp is the fourth WR to win the triple crown, but he came up just 17 yards short of Calvin Johnson’s receiving record

The season didn’t end the way the Rams hoped, but Cooper Kupp still capped off the year with another terrific performance in Los Angeles’ 27-24 loss to the 49ers. He caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, padding his already-incredible numbers.

Kupp finished the regular season with 145 catches for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns, one of the best campaigns ever by a wide receiver. He leads the NFL in every category, making him just the fourth player in the Super Bowl era (since 1970) to lead the league in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches.

The other three players are Jerry Rice (1990), Sterling Sharpe (1992) and Steve Smith (2005), putting Kupp in elite company. However, he unfortunately came up just short of Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving record of 1,964 yards.

Kupp needed another 18 yards to break Johnson’s record, but it simply wasn’t in the cards for the Pro Bowl receiver. However, he still pushed past Julio Jones, Rice and Antonio Brown to finish with the second-most yards in a single season in league history.

Even with the extra game, this was one of the best seasons ever by a wide receiver. There’s still work to be done in the playoffs, but Kupp has plenty to hang his hat on after a historic regular season.

Watch: Cooper Kupp makes spectacular TD catch to give Rams late lead vs. 49ers

Cooper Kupp put the Rams up 24-17 with this amazing touchdown grab late against the 49ers

Cooper Kupp has been Mr. Reliable for the Rams all season long, and that didn’t change in the finale against the 49ers. With just over 2 minutes left in the game, Kupp came through with another clutch catch to give the Rams the lead over San Francisco.

On third-and-4, Matthew Stafford threw it up for Kupp in the corner of the end zone with two defenders on him. Yet, Kupp somehow came down with the catch for the touchdown, putting the Rams up 24-17 late.

This came a few plays after Kupp made a 30-yard reception on third down to keep the drive alive and put the Rams in position to score.

It’s Kupp’s 16th touchdown of the season, also putting him at 118 yards on the day – 17 yards shy of Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving record.
