Chiefs sign HC Andy Reid, GM Brett Veach, President Mark Donovan to extensions

The #Chiefs extended the contracts of Head Coach Andy Reid, General Manager Brett Veach, and team President Mark Donovan on Monday night.

Just days before the 2024 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs signed head coach Andy Reid, general manager Brett Veach, and team president Mark Donovan to contract extensions.

The move comes after Kansas City secured its second-consecutive championship in Super Bowl LVIII with a win over the San Francisco 49ers back in February.

In a statement sent to the press, the Chiefs emphasized the importance of Reid, Veach, and Donovan in their front office, pointing to the accomplishments that the trio have been able to achieve:

“Together since 2017, Donovan, Veach, and Reid have overseen a Chiefs team which has gone 100-34 (.746) (reg. & postseason combined), claiming seven consecutive AFC West Division Championships, four AFC Championships, and three Super Bowl Championships,” the team wrote. “The club has been in six-consecutive AFC Championship Games including hosting an NFL record five-straight (2018-2022).”

Clark Hunt’s decision to keep these three key figures in Kansas City for the foreseeable future should prove to help the Chiefs sustain their dynasty as the team looks to continue winning Super Bowls for years to come.

8 Colts who could receive contract extensions this offseason

Taking a look at eight Colts who could receive contract extensions this offseason.

Ever since Chris Ballard took over as general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, they have been a team not afraid to hand out contract extensions to players they feel have earned it.

This is a big offseason for a Colts organization that is looking to build a playoff contender after narrowly missing out on the postseason. Re-signing some pending free agents to new deals and handing out some contract extensions to players currently under contract will be two ways of doing so.

We’re taking two schools of thought here as it pertains to contract extensions. The first includes pending free agents we believe could earn a multi-year deal before the new league year arrives in March.

The other includes players going into the final year of their current contract. We’ve seen Ballard hand out extensions in the past when players have one year remaining on current deals before that final season arrives. In theory, these deals would likely get done during the summer after free agency and the 2024 NFL draft have already passed.

Admittedly, we’re casting a pretty wide net here. Not all of the players below will receive a new deal this offseason. In fact, the majority of them probably won’t. But if there’s a slight chance they might, we’re going to make the argument as to why it could happen.

Here are eight Colts currently under contract who could receive a contract extension during the 2024 offseason:

Is Joe Burrow going to reset the quarterback market when he signs an extension?

Ian Rapoport thinks Burrow will get the next market-resetting quarterback deal.

The NFL is a constant game of one-upmanship.

When one elite player signs a new mega-contract, every other elite player at that position will search for a deal that either matches or, in some cases, exceeds the current largest contract.

With no position is this more pronounced than quarterback, to whom the largest deals are given. Patrick Mahomes is currently the quarterback king after signing a 10-year, $450 million extension (which has the highest total value among quarterback contracts though not the highest yearly salary).

However, there are a number of talented young quarterbacks still playing on rookie deals, and one of them is former LSU quarterback [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag].

Burrow is in the midst of a fantastic third year with the Cincinnati Bengals, who he has guided to the AFC Championship for the second straight year and will look to return to the Super Bowl. Burrow has one more season on his rookie contract (plus the fifth-year team option), and he could be in the market for an extension.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said of all the pending quarterback deals, he thinks Burrow will be the one to reset the market.

“If anyone could do it, Burrow could do it,” Rapoport said.

It’s hard to argue with Rapoport’s logic here, considering everything Burrow has accomplished to begin his NFL career. Winning a Super Bowl this season would be the icing on the cake, but regardless, locking Burrow down for the long term should be the Bengals’ top priority entering the 2023 season.

Colts’ Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr. eligible for extensions

Colts RB Jonathan Taylor and WR Michael Pittman Jr. are eligible for contract extensions.

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., along with the rest of the 2020 draft class, are now eligible to negotiate and sign contract extensions.

With the end of the regular season, Monday officially marked the start of the offseason. As is the case every year, drafted players entering the fourth year of their rookie contracts are eligible to sign extensions.

Taylor and Pittman Jr. headline that draft class as they’ve been extremely productive throughout their first three seasons in the NFL.

Though Taylor dealt with a nagging ankle injury throughout the 2022 season, forcing him to miss seven games (including the Vikings game), he has been a rising star since he was drafted. Taylor led the NFL in rushing yards for the 2021 season and despite the injuries and brutal offensive play, he still recorded 1,004 yards from scrimmage in 10 games.

Pittman Jr. had an interesting 2022 campaign. He finished the season with 99 receptions, just one shy of the century mark. Had he hit that milestone, Pittman Jr. would have been the youngest player in franchise history to record 100 receptions in a season.

Still, his 99 catches are the most in a season for the Colts since Reggie Wayne in 2012. The issue came with the fact that the offensive had no downfield presence, which limited Pittman Jr.’s explosive abilities. He recorded career-lows in yards per reception (9.3), yards-after-catch per reception (3.6) and aDOT (3.6).

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Colts tried to get both players under contract this offseason. There are a lot of decisions to be made when it comes to the salary-cap over the next few months, but these are the two players that run the offense.

Other players from the Colts’ 2020 draft class who are eligible for contract extensions include safety Julian Blackmon, guard Danny Pinter, cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and wide receiver Dezmon Patmon.

LSU AD Scott Woodward set to receive 4-year extension

LSU’s board of supervisors is set for a vote to approve Woodward’s extension — which would pay him $1.8 million annually — on Friday afternoon.

Tigers athletics director [autotag]Scott Woodward[/autotag] is sticking around for the near future.

Woodward is set to receive a four-year extension that will pay him $1.85 million annually. The university’s board of supervisors is set to hold a vote to approve Woodward’s extension on Friday afternoon.

Woodward’s contract includes academic incentives that could boost his pay by as much as $250,000 annually, per a report from ESPN’s Alex Scarborough. It could also net him $500,000 in bonuses for the 2025 and 2029 fiscal years if he meets certain incentives, and a national championship for one program or an SEC title for three would grant him an additional $500,000 in a “Milestone Performance Payment.”

LSU hired Woodward away from Texas A&M, where he pulled football coach Jimbo Fisher from Florida State, in 2019. Since joining his alma mater, Woodward has gained notoriety for his flashy coach hirings, which have included [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag], [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] and [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag].

Woodward is regarded as one of the top ADs in college sports, and it seems like he’ll be calling the shots at LSU, at least in the relative short term.

6 Rams players who could be in line for extensions this offseason

These six players aren’t free agents, but the Rams could still sign them to extensions this offseason

The Rams checked one big box on their offseason to-do list already when they signed Matthew Stafford to a four-year extension. That allowed them to lower his cap hit by $9.5 million in 2022, making it a win-win for both sides.

He may not be the only player the Rams extend this offseason, however. Aaron Donald is also in line for a new deal, and five others would make sense as candidates for a contract extension.

Maxx Crosby signed a huge contract two years to the day he became sober and everyone was so happy for him

This is just awesome. Shoutout to Maxx Crosby.

No matter what team you root for, you really can’t help but be happy for the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby right now.

He just signed a four-year, $95 million extension with the Raiders that will keep the defensive end in Las Vegas for the foreseeable future, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That’s a pretty cool thing. But that’s not the kicker here.

The best part about all of this is that March 11, 2020 was the day that Crosby became sober. He’d embarked on a journey to battle his alcohol addiction on that day.

He actually got a tattoo to commemorate the day. He posted it to Twitter to share his journey with everyone.

Now, two seasons later to the day, here he is signing a new contract for big money with the Raiders.

That is quite the journey, indeed. What an awesome story. Everyone was so happy for Crosby.

Colts progressing toward extensions for Darius Leonard, Braden Smith

Colts hope to get deals done by Week 1.

The Indianapolis Colts are continuing their progress toward contract extensions for linebacker Darius Leonard and right tackle Braden Smith, per Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

Keefer reported that the team is still working out the details and hopes to get the deals done before Week 1 of the regular season.

This comes as no surprise. The Colts have made it clear both in their words and their actions that they want to get these extensions done before the 2021 season arrives. They stayed relatively quiet in free agency in order to save some space in salary-cap room for this to happen.

Leonard and Smith are easy extensions to predict. Both have been incredible starters for the Colts since they arrived on the scene in 2018. The other to keep an eye on is All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson, but his extension can get pushed back a bit given that the team already exercised his fifth-year option for 2022.

Leonard could very well reset the market at linebacker on his new contract. Smith will get paid like an upper-tier right tackle given the progress he has made since moving from guard to tackle during his rookie season.

The summer months of June and July are typically dead, but keep an eye out for the possible extensions before the regular season arrives.

Oklahoma Sooners’ assistant coaches receive extensions

Multiple Oklahoma assistant coaches receive contract extentions at Board of Regents meeting.

As each college football season comes to a close and another one dawns, it is not just the roster that is evaluated. Coaches are as well for the optimization of talent. The Oklahoma Sooners made a statement about their assistant coaches, granting many a contract extension at the Board of Regents meeting per Sooner Scoop staff writer Bob Przybylo.

Offensive line coach/co-offensive coordinator Bill Bedenbaugh, inside receivers coach/co-offensive coordinator Cale Gundy, cornerbacks coach Roy Manning, running backs coach DeMarco Murray, inside linebackers coach Brian Odom, defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux, outside linebackers/defensive ends Jamar Cain and director of sports performance Bennie Wylie all received extensions through 2023.

Defensive coordinator/safeties coach Alex Grinch and assistant head coach/passing game coordinator/outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons both received contract extensions through 2024.

In addition, Gundy was given a $20,000 raise and Simmons a $90,000 raise.

Locking up Alex Grinch for several years is key for the program’s success. Grinch significantly improved the defense over the past couple of years in Norman. The unit went from being the laughingstock in the Big 12 to one of the best in college football. A testament to the energetic man with the headset. Grinch took over as defensive coordinator/safeties coach in 2019 and revamped the group. The defense improved from a total defense ranking of 114th in 2018, 38th in 2019, to 29th in the nation in 2020. That is telling. The squad also drastically improved in rush defense (2018-59th, 2019-32nd, 2020-9th), interceptions (2018-112th, 2019-100th, 2020-3rd), and sacks-per-game (2018-74th, 2019-34th, 2020-7th).

His “Speed D” is built on playing aggressive, downhill, high-effort football to generate turnovers. In his hybrid 3-4/4-2-5 system, the defensive line operates in a one-gap, quickly penetrating and attacking style at the line of scrimmage. The dominance from the front frees things up for the linebackers and nickel backs. On the back end, Grinch prioritizes stopping the run, moving guys around in the box to disrupt tempo. His developed unit has poised Oklahoma for their next national title.

On the opposite side of the ball, Bill Bedenbaugh has created the protective wall surrounding Oklahoma’s high-profile quarterbacks. He continuously produces elite offensive lineman entering the NFL draft and primes them for success at the next level. Whether it be the team’s bread and butter- the counter pull, pass protection, or run blocking, the guys in the trenches perform at a high level under Bedenbaugh’s tutelage. His O-Line has paved the way for two Heisman Trophy winners and one runner up. Without the big guys up front doing their jobs, Oklahoma’s explosive offensive attack would be nonexistent.

He led the 2018 Oklahoma offensive line that was recognized as the nation’s best with the reception of the Joe Moore Award. The Sooners led the country in total offense (570.3 yards-per-game), scoring offense (48.4 points-per-game), rushing yards-per-carry (6.6) and yards-per-play (FBS-record 8.6). Bedenbaugh was a finalist in 2017 and semifinalist in 2018 for the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach. He has established himself as one of the best talent producers in the country and Oklahoma took notice with a well-deserved contract extension.

4 Colts who could receive contract extensions this offseason

Which players will get new deals?

Ever since Chris Ballard took over as general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, they have been a team not afraid to hand out contract extensions to players they feel have earned it.

Rewarding their own is part of the culture the Colts have built in Indy, and every season it seems there are prime candidates to receive an extension on their current contracts. But this offseason is a little different. There are some big names who could receive new deals.

Here are four Colts currently under contract who could receive a contract extension this offseason:
