247Sports host thinks the Oklahoma Sooners are contenders

One 247Sports analyst believes that the Oklahoma Sooners are bona fide playoff contenders.

The ongoing debate around Norman, Oklahoma, revolves around the Sooners’ chances in the College Football Playoffs. Can they return after a one-year hiatus in 2020? Can they finally get over the hump and win a College Football Playoffs semifinals game?

Those topics won’t go anywhere during the foreseeable future, or at least until December when the committee names the teams that will compete in the annual four-team tournament. Oklahoma has been to the playoffs on four different occassions with the same outcome, so is this year going to be any different?

Josh Pate of 247Sports recently discussed the Sooners contending hopes.

“This is the fewest amount of questions I’ve ever had about a Lincoln Riley team at Oklahoma,” Pate said. “I’m sky high on them. I think they’re a bona fide National Championship contender. And if you push back on that and your main pushback is, ‘Well, everyone knows they’re going to get steamrolled once they face an elite SEC team in the playoff; Everyone knows that their defense can’t stop anyone,’ I’m telling you if you took this defensive personnel Oklahoma has this year and you threw Florida jerseys on them or Georgia jerseys on them, you would crown them National Championship contenders.”

This is the same Oklahoma Sooners football team of years past. While the quarterback situation is stable for the first time since Baker Mayfield, in terms of having a multi-year starter. The defense is much improved than year’s past with some question marks on the back end of Alex Grinch’s defense. Plus the team added plenty of starting caliber players through the the transfer portal and the Big 12’s best recruiting class.

Oklahoma will be one team to watch as they are expected to start as a top five team when the polls are released closer to the season.

Is the Florida Gators football team a national championship contender in 2020?

UF has won 21 games in the first two years under coach Dan Mullen but they haven’t yet taken the next step in becoming a true playoff threat

We’re just over two weeks from the scheduled beginning of the SEC season and the end of an eclectic offseason. National writers are making their preseason College Football Playoff predictions, and with a switch to mostly conference-only schedules in the Power Five, the uncertainty has landed some new playoff contenders on those watchlists.

One of these teams is Florida. The Gators have won 21 games in the first two years under coach Dan Mullen, but they haven’t yet taken the next step in becoming a true playoff threat.

Some expect that to change this year, though. In his rundown of teams contending for this year’s national title, CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli sees UF as a team that is a “prominent contender,” alongside Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

Here’s what Fornelli said about Florida.

Of these four, Florida is the only one that hasn’t reached the playoff yet. That could end this season. It has a legit shot at winning the SEC East. The team improved a lot in Dan Mullen’s second season, and we shouldn’t overlook how much more important it might be to have a returning starter at quarterback the team has confidence in this year as opposed to years past. Unfortunately for the Gators, the one thing that separates them from being a team that’s a real title threat in my eyes is the talent gap between them and the others mentioned in this space. According to 247Sports’ Team Talent rankings, no team I included on this list is less talented than Florida at No. 16 overall. That’s not a knock on the Gators’ talent as much as it’s a statement about how freaking hard it is to be good enough to win a national title.
