Packers awarded 3 compensatory picks in 2024 NFL draft

The Packers received a compensatory pick in the fifth round, sixth round and seventh round of the 204 NFL draft.

The NFL awarded the Green Bay Packers three compensatory draft picks — all on Day 3 — in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Packers were given a compensatory pick in the fifth round, sixth round and seventh round as a result of the unrestricted free agent market last year.

The three added picks:

— No. 168, fifth round
— No. 219, sixth round
— No. 255, seventh round

The Packers lost qualifying free agents Allen Lazard (New York Jets), Jarran Reed (Seattle Seahawks), Dean Lowry (Minnesota Vikings) and Robert Tonyan (Chicago Bears) and didn’t sign any qualifying free agents last year.

The Packers will go into the draft with 11 total picks: five in the first three rounds and six between rounds four and seven.

In total, 14 teams received compensatory picks. The Packers were one of nine teams to receive multiple compensatory picks, including one of six to receive three or more.

Here’s why the Packers didn’t receive a fourth pick, per the NFL: “This year, three clubs, the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, and Jacksonville Jaguars qualified for a compensatory selection under the net loss formula but will not receive that pick because the final numerical value of the CFA who was lost ranked 33rd or lower among the final numerical values of all compensatory selections.”

The Packers rank third in the NFL in compensatory picks gained since 1994 with 52. Only the Baltimore Ravens (56) and Dallas Cowboys (54) have received more.

The Lions don’t earn any compensatory draft picks for 2024

As expected, the Detroit Lions were not awarded any compensatory selections in the 2024 NFL draft

The NFL announced the 34 total compensatory draft picks for the 2024 NFL draft on Friday. As expected, the Detroit Lions did not receive any of the extra picks.

Comp picks, as they are commonly known, are awarded to teams that have net salary losses in free agency from the prior offseason. Teams that spend more money on outside free agents than they lose to other teams don’t get comp picks, and that group includes the Lions.

Two special compensatory picks were awarded in 2024 for having minority coaches hired to a higher position with another team. The Rams and 49ers were awarded picks at the end of the third round.

Detroit last earned comp picks in 2022.

Ravens are awarded a fourth round compensatory pick for 2024 NFL draft

The Baltimore Ravens were awarded one compensatory pick: a fourth rounder (No. 134 overall) for the free-agent loss of offensive guard Ben Powers

The Baltimore Ravens will have eight picks in April’s NFL draft after being awarded a fourth-round compensatory pick for Ben Powers’s departure in 2023 free agency.

The extra pick comes after Powers signed a four-year, $51 million deal with the Broncos last spring.

The NFL announced today that 14 teams have been awarded 34 compensatory draft selections in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Baltimore lost two qualifying free agents while signing one last offseason.

Powers signed a deal worth $13 million a year with Denver, and Josh Oliver signed a deal worth $7 million with the Vikings. The Ravens signed Nelson Agholor, which canceled out the pick they would have received for losing Oliver.

Jaguars awarded 2 compensatory picks, ending 13-offseason drought

The Jaguars received compensatory draft picks for the first time in a long time.

For the first time since 2010, the Jacksonville Jaguars were awarded compensatory draft picks.

On Friday, the NFL announced that the Jaguars received a third-round pick (No. 96 overall) and a sixth-round pick (No. 212 overall) for the losses of Jawaan Taylor and Arden Key, respectively. Taylor joined the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency on a four-year, $80 million contract while Key signed with the Tennessee Titans on a three-year, $21 million deal.

Compensatory selections are awarded to teams that suffer net losses in free agency. While the Jaguars have lost plenty of other players in the last 13 offseasons, the team’s frequent spending nullified the opportunity to receive picks for those losses. For example, when wide receiver Allen Robinson and cornerback Aaron Colvin left the Jaguars in 2019, big contracts for offensive lineman Andrew Norwell and wide receiver Donte Moncrief erased the chance to get 2020 draft picks.

In 2023, the Jaguars largely stood pat in free agency, opting to focus their efforts on retaining their own players rather than hunting through the market. Jacksonville narrowly missed earning two more compensatory picks too, as tight end Chris Manhertz and wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. both received qualifying contracts that weren’t quite lucrative enough to earn a seventh-round pick.

With the addition of the two selections, the Jaguars have nine selections in the 2024 NFL draft.

NFL draft: Colts awarded no 2024 compensatory selections

The Colts will be without comp picks during the 2024 NFL draft.

The Indianapolis Colts will go without any compensatory selections in the 2024 NFL draft, the league announced Friday.

This comes as no surprise. The Colts were not expected to earn any compensatory picks after spending a decent amount in free agency during the 2023 offseason.

The Colts will enter free agency with their seven draft selections and with the compensatory picks announced, we know the official order of where they will be choosing from, starting at No. 15 overall.

Rams awarded 5 compensatory picks in 2024 draft, including a 3rd-rounder

The Rams picked up five compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL draft on Friday, including one in the third round

The Los Angeles Rams nearly doubled their draft pick total on Friday thanks to the NFL’s announcement of compensatory selections for several teams. According to the release, the Rams were awarded five compensatory picks.

That gives them 11 total selections in the 2024 draft, which is what Les Snead and Sean McVay were expecting to have.

Here’s a breakdown of the compensatory picks Los Angeles received on Friday:

Round 3, Pick 98

Round 6, Pick 209

Round 6, Pick 213

Round 6, Pick 217

Round 7, Pick 254

The Rams will now have one pick in the first round, one in the second, two in the third, two in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh for a total of 11.

The third-round comp pick was for the departure of Raheem Morris, who was hired as the Falcons’ head coach. The Rams will be awarded another third-round pick in 2025 for losing him, as part of the NFL’s minority coaching hire initiative.

Below is a full list of the compensatory picks handed out on Friday.

Ravens projected to receive a fourth-round compensatory pick in 2024

Ravens projected to receive a fourth-round compensatory pick in 2024

According to overthecap.com, the Baltimore Ravens are only projected to receive a single compensatory pick for the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Ravens are expected to net a fourth-round compensatory pick in this year’s draft for losing left guard Ben Powers last offseason. Powers left Baltimore to sign a four-year, $52 million contract with the Denver Broncos following a breakout season in the previous year of his rookie contract.

The Ravens drafted Powers out of Oklahoma with the No. 123 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. After spending his first three seasons as a backup, Powers took over the starting left guard position in 2022 and did not look back, earning a PFF pass-blocking grade of 86.7 for the year.

On the other hand, Baltimore’s potential sixth-round compensatory pick for tight end Josh Oliver was canceled out by the signing of wide receiver Nelson Agholor this offseason.

With a long list of unrestricted free agents set to hit the open market this offseason, including players such as defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, inside linebacker Patrick Queen, free safety Geno Stone, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., running back Gus Edwards, and right guard Kevin Zeitler, and a quarterback with one of the largest contracts in the league on the books now, the Ravens will need every single draft pick that they can get their hands on to maintain a championship-level roster for the foreseeable future.

Colts not projected to earn 2024 compensatory picks

The Colts are not expected to receive compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Indianapolis Colts are not expected to earn compensatory selections in the 2024 NFL draft, according to projections made by Over The Cap.

Though the draft order is mostly set outside of the four teams still remaining in the playoffs, we know where the Colts will be sitting in the first three rounds of the draft.

After that, the draft slots are not official because the compensatory selections haven’t been announced yet. They won’t be until after the Super Bowl concludes in February.

It seemingly won’t matter for the Colts, though as they aren’t expected to receive any compensatory picks.

The process essentially comes down to the league giving teams extra draft capital between Rounds 3-7 for those who lost major players in free agency during the prior offseason.

The Colts lost linebacker Bobby Okereke and wide receiver Parris Campbell in free agency last offseason. Over The Cap projected those to be worth fourth and sixth-round compensatory picks, respectively.

However, they are projected to be negated by the fact that the Colts signed Samson Ebukam, Matt Gay and Gardner Minshew, which project to be worth a fifth-round and two sixth-round compensatory picks, respectively.

We know Chris Ballard loves his draft picks, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll be getting any compensatory selections in 2024.

Browns projected zero compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL draft

The Cleveland Browns are projected zero compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Cleveland Browns are projected to receive zero compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL draft (according to Over The Cap).

The projections do not include compensatory picks awarded from the 2020 Resolution JC-2A. The resolution hopes to encourage diversity at the top levels of the league. The resolution awards organizations that developed minority candidates for head coach or general manager positions with multiple third-round picks.

The Browns will receive a third-round pick in the upcoming draft after the Minnesota Vikings hired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah as their general manager last season. The Browns have not received a traditional compensatory pick since 2017. The seven-year streak is the longest drought currently in the NFL.

Compensatory picks reward teams with an extra draft pick if they lost significant players in free agency the year before. It makes sense that the Browns have not been awarded one in years. General manager Andrew Berry is doing a good job keeping their homegrown talent on the team.

The Browns may receive compensatory picks in the future if their talented players become too expensive to retain.
