Chase Young talks recovery, Commanders

Chase Young has come around on Commanders, especially after seeing the new uniforms.

The 2021 NFL season was disappointing for Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young. After winning NFL defensive rookie of the year in 2020, Young started nine games in 2021, recording just 1.5 sacks before tearing his ACL in a Week 10 win over the Buccaneers.

In a recent interview with CBS Sports, Young talked about his recovery.

“It’s going great,” Young told CBS Sports when asked about his rehab. “I already squatted 225 (pounds); I’m already one-leg squatting. It’s going great. You know, the process was definitely humbling, but I’m excited to go through it just to see what type of person I’m going to be on the other side.”

Young discussed the mental aspect of removing from a devastating knee injury, saying he had spoken to former Washington linebacker Thomas Davis — a Ron Rivera favorite. Thomas famously suffered three torn ACLs and developed into a first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler over a remarkable 16-year NFL career.

“I’m a lot stronger than I thought,” said Young. “I’ve never had an injury like this before, and I know what it’s going to take to get back. I’ve talked to Thomas Davis and other people who have torn their ACLs. Some people not just once, but multiple times.

As you might expect, Washington’s recent rebranding was a hot topic.

Young was one of three Washington players the team used in the buildup to unveil the new team name. Young, wide receiver Terry McLaurin and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen modeled the new Commanders’ uniforms. Each player knew the new name ahead of time.

While initially skeptical of the new name, Young has come around, especially after seeing the uniforms.

“It grew on me just seeing the jerseys and everything that we are going to stand for with the name, knowing we’re from D.C.,” Young said. “It definitely grew on me, so I’m ready to go out there and be a Commander, and we’re going to be commanding — know that!”

Young is especially fond of the black alternate jerseys, which Allen modeled.

“I always liked our jerseys, always loved our colors even since I was a young kid,” Young said. “But the alternate black jerseys, that’s probably my favorite. I loved the white jersey I had on and that Burgundy jersey I love. On the regular away game, that white jersey is nice; it’s crisp, man.”

While many aren’t fans of the name, the logo and uniforms were important. And it appears Washington’s new uniforms were a hit with Young and his teammates.

As for his recovery, Young has refused to give a timeline, which is smart. What Washington doesn’t need is another “All in for Week 1.” Young is far too important to the franchise to rush his recovery from a knee injury that occurred in November.

Nevada quarterback Carson Strong has met with Washington at the Senior Bowl

Washington has met with Nevada quarterback Carson Strong.

There is perhaps no better week for NFL scouts and coaches to get up to speed on the upcoming NFL draft than the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

And for those needing a quarterback, it’s an excellent opportunity for teams to spend a week evaluating some of the top prospects. Teams can see every practice snap, what the quarterback struggles with, and, most importantly, if he improves throughout the week.

While Washington head coach Ron Rivera isn’t present in Mobile, Alabama, top executives such as general manager Martin Mayhew and Marty Hurney are in town this week. Offensive coordinator Scott Turner and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese are also in Mobile.

The Commanders have extensively scouted the draft-eligible quarterbacks throughout the college football season. But, there is nothing like seeing them at the Senior Bowl, where, for some players, it is the first time they will take a snap from under center.

Washington is desperate for a quarterback. It plans on swinging big for a veteran, but that outcome remains unlikely. So Washington needs to find out all it can on each of the six quarterbacks present at the Senior Bowl.

One of those quarterbacks, Carson Strong of Nevada, has met with Washington.

It’s no surprise Washington has met with Strong. In all likelihood, it has met with each of the six quarterbacks.

Strong is an interesting prospect. He has ideal size at 6-foot-3 and 226 pounds. He has a strong arm with exceptional accuracy. The biggest knock on Strong is an old knee injury.

Strong has played the last three seasons — and played well. But the questions regarding his knee will likely determine where he’s picked in April. The medical checks at the NFL combine are important for many prospects, but perhaps none more so than Strong.

Washington legend Doug Williams is a fan of the ‘Commanders’

Doug Williams just wants fans to give the name a chance.

Doug Williams is one of the more celebrated players in Washington’s franchise history. This week was the 34th anniversary of Washington’s 42-10 triumph over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII. Williams, who completed 18 of 29 passes for 340 yards with four touchdowns, was named the MVP.

He became the first African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP.

Since his retirement, Williams has worked as a college head coach and NFL executive. He returned to Washington in 2014, serving in various roles in the team’s front office. Williams is currently a senior adviser.

So, it was no surprise that Williams was involved in unveiling the team’s new name Wednesday. Williams, Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and team president Jason Wright were live on NBC’s Today Show to reveal Commanders as Washington’s new name.

Williams spoke on Washington’s new name and uniforms in the included video.

“I think the uniform and stuff says a lot,” Williams answered when asked about the new uniforms. What I like about it is it is clean and good-looking.”

Williams was then asked about the rebranding process and why this was such a big deal for the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) community.

“Well, I’m certainly not going to say the DMV is gonna take it easy,” Williams said. “You got so many people in this neighborhood that loved the name Washington Redskins for so long that’s all they know. So, it’s something they have to get used to. So I know everybody’s not going to like the new name, but I think they have to give it a chance, let it work. And I also think the team has got to do a good job on the football field. too.”

The name is certainly divisive for Washington fans. But it would be this way regardless of the chosen name. Williams is right; fans should give it a chance — but the team needs to handle its business on the field.

President Biden weighs in on Washington’s new name

President Biden tweeted about Washington’s new name — and Ron Rivera responded.

The Washington Football Team is now the Washington Commanders. After Washington unveiled its new name Wednesday, there was plenty of reaction from around the NFL. Fans, players and media had fun with Washington’s rebranding, with some liking the new name and logo, and others, well, not so much.

President Joe Biden also weighed in on Washington’s new name, sending out the following tweet:

“I supposed there’s room for two Commanders in this town.”

Biden is referring to his dog, a German Shepherd named “Commander.”

It didn’t take long for Washington head coach Ron Rivera to respond to President Biden’s tweet.

Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, also tweeted about Washington’s new name, wondering if the team needed a mascot.

Washington team president Jason Wright did say Washington was still working on a fight song and a mascot.

Washington mayor wants Commanders back in D.C.

Washington, D.C. mayor wants the Commanders back in D.C.

The Washington Football Team got a new name Wednesday. The WFT is now the Washington Commanders. The next step for Washington is continuing its efforts to build a new stadium.

But where?

Virginia appears to be the frontrunner, with either Loudoun County or Prince Williams County landing the new stadium. However, Maryland governor Larry Hogan wants to keep the Commanders in his state.

On Wednesday, shortly after Washington’s rebranding, Washington, D.C Mayor Muriel Bowser stated her case for the team returning to the district.

Washington, of course, enjoyed its greatest success playing in RFK Stadium from 1961-96. The stadium was located in southeast D.C., and Washington won three Super Bowls when it called RFK home.

In the past, Bowser said the team’s controversial former name was a roadblock for a potential new stadium. Now that Washington has a new name, could the nation’s capital bring the Commanders back to their original home?

The good news for the Commanders and the NFL is you have three interested parties therefore finding a new home shouldn’t be too difficult.

Twitter reacts to Washington’s new name

Twitter reacts to Washington’s new name.

In case you haven’t heard, the Washington Football Team is now the Washington Commanders.

The name was expected with various leaks and Washington franchise legend Joe Theismann talking about the name on a Monday radio show. Theismann later backtracked. Then, on Tuesday night, an NBC helicopter spotted a Commanders’ logo at FedEx Field.

Owners Dan and Tanya Snyder spoke at Washington’s media event Wednesday morning, with Dan Snyder even joking about it being the worst-kept secret in Washington.

So how did the fans react to the reveal? As you might expect, most hate it, but everyone hates everything on social media.

We take to Twitter to reveal reactions from fans and media.

The Washington Football Team is no more. On Wednesday morning, Washington officially revealed its new name to be the Commanders.

The reactions are mixed, with many initially not liking the new name. Team co-owner Dan Snyder spoke to the media after Washington’s name reveal.

“Welcome to the not-best-kept secret in D.C,” Snyder said. Good morning; thank you so much for joining us today. Today is a big day for our team, our fans. A day in which we embark on a new chapter as the Washington Commanders.”

Snyder’s wife, co-owner Tanya Snyder, was outside the team’s store and thanked the fans in attendance. She also said she would buy each fan something for being there.

Washington Football Team reveals Commanders as new name

The Washington Football Team officially becomes the Washington Commanders.

It’s official; the Washington Football Team is no more. On NBC’s Today Show Wednesday morning, team president Jason Wright, Washington legend Doug Williams and captain Jonathan Allen revealed Washington’s new name would be the Commanders.

Washington, which officially retired its old name in July 2020, was known by the temporary moniker of “Football Team” over the past two seasons.

Washington choosing Commanders as the new name is not a surprise. Over the past month, there have been clues, including Wright holding an unblurred photo in the team’s “Making the Brand” video, which featured the Commanders’ name and a logo.

Last week, a Twitter used did some online sleuthing and discovered the Commanders.com domain was transferred to MarkMonitor, which the NFL uses for most of its domains.

On Monday, franchise legend Joe Theismann was on CBS Radio in New York and discussed the Commanders as Washington’s new name. He later backtracked.

Finally, Tuesday night, an aerial reporter and photojournalist for NBC spotted a Commanders’ banner inside FedEx Field.

It’s a new era for the NFL’s Washington franchise.

Washington Commanders banner spotted at FedExField

Washington is set to reveal its new name Wednesday officially. It appears we may already know.

The Washington Football Team is scheduled to announce the franchise’s new name Wednesday morning on NBC’s Today Show. However, NBC Sports Washington may have already discovered Washington’s new name.

Brad Freitas, an aerial reporter and photojournalist for NBC Universal, took a video while in the back of Chopper 4 that reveals a “Commanders” banner at FedEx Field.

While Washington likely didn’t intend on anyone discovering the new name via helicopter, it felt like the team was fine with the name getting out for weeks. On Monday, franchise legend Joe Theismann went on CBS Radio and discussed Commanders being Washington’s new name.

Theismann later clarified he wasn’t sure what the name was, but he was clearly doing some backtracking. Since the team announced the reveal date last month, numerous clues pointing to Commanders as the new name has dropped.

It becomes official Wednesday.
