Andy Reid on Chiefs QB Shane Buechele: ‘He looks more comfortable’

Andy Reid said that #Chiefs quarterback Shane Buechele “looks more comfortable” during his comments to the media after Wednesday’s practice.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been known to utilize his second-string quarterbacks in the past and has a competition for the coveted role on his hands ahead of his team’s final preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

Reid was asked about third-year passer Shane Buechele after Kansas City’s practice session on Wednesday and expounded on the development he has seen from the former SMU Mustang in the preseason. He seemed pleased with what he had seen and told reporters that the veteran presence currently ahead of Buechele on the depth chart seemed to be helping him settle in.

“Well he looks more comfortable, and I think in a crazy way, Blaine (Gabbert) has been good for him and bringing out the best in him, you know, the competition,” Reid explained. “Blaine is competing like crazy too, so it’s been a good challenge there for him but he’s doing a nice job, more time coming up here, so we’ll see how both of them do.”

Expect the competition between Buechele and Gabbert to be fierce against the Browns this weekend as each quarterback vies for their chance to back up Patrick Mahomes ahead of the 2023 regular season kickoff in September.

Andy Reid’s complex system can cause issues for rookies coming into the NFL as members of the Kansas City Chiefs offense. Skyy Moore was one such rookie last season, as he struggled to find a rhythm for much of the team’s 2022 campaign.

During Wednesday’s press conference after practice, Moore explained what exactly makes Reid’s system so difficult to grasp.

“It’s just very detailed,” Moore explained. “Coach [Andy] Reid wants you in a specific spot, specific alignment, so everything is not as detailed from the offense that you were coming from [in college].”

After being in the system for a year, the 22-year-old receiver is much more comfortable in his role and understanding of the offense.

“[I’m] way more comfortable. I have that year of experience,” Moore continued. “I feel like certain things that I already know. I went through a whole season. I shouldn’t have to be coached on – where to align – anything that happens before the snap, I don’t need to get coached up on. It’s more of how I beat the guy, instead of what route do I run.”

Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be depending on Moore’s services this season, as the Chiefs’ receiving corps is filled with exciting yet unproven talent. Moore’s performance in training camp has given coaches and players hope that he can step up this season and become a star in Kansas City’s offense.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid more comfortable in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense heading into 2023

Safety Justin Reid said that there is a “night and day” difference in his comfortability in the #Chiefs defense at training camp.

Justin Reid played his first season in Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive system last year during the Kansas City Chiefs’ run to Super Bowl LVII. Like many newcomers to the veteran coordinator’s scheme, it took Reid some time to adjust.

This offseason, Reid has gained a step in his understanding of the playbook, and that has carried over to training camp for the 26-year-old safety. He talked to reporters after Saturday’s practice about his comfortability with Spagnuolo’s playbook.

“[It’s been] night and day,” Reid explained. “From training camp last year to this year, night and day on the speed of play – not out there thinking, just out there playing – knowing what all the responsibilities are, knowing [what] my teammates are doing, helping guys get organized, just go out the field and play. [There is] definitely, a learning curve to it. Some of the young guys, some of the new players are feeling that a little bit.”

Reid will continue getting Kansas City’s first and second-year defensive backs up to speed through the rest of the preseason. His newfound confidence is sure to inspire his teammates as they endeavor to defend the Chiefs’ championship title in 2023.
