Sunday Best: Saints announce uniform combination for Week 9 vs. Bucs

The New Orleans Saints will wear their fan-favorite Color Rush alternate uniforms during Sunday night’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

[jwplayer N295o0Ez-ThvAeFxT]

Here’s some good news to start your Saturday: the New Orleans Saints will be wearing their fan-favorite “Color Rush” alternate uniforms during Sunday night’s rematch with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team announced.

This look was last used in Week 2’s upset loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, but the Saints have had great success while wearing their “Color Rush” jerseys in recent years. They’ve achieved a 6-3 all-time record while rolling with the alternates, which are widely regarded as the cleanest uniforms in the NFL.

Unfortunately, this means the Saints can only break them out one more time in 2020. NFL rules prohibit teams from wearing alternate uniforms in more than three games per season, barring special permission upon request, which has been denied to the Saints before. After opting to wear the “Color Rush” jerseys against the Raiders and Buccaneers, the Saints will likely keep this one in their back pocket for later in the season. Maybe they should explore making this a full-time away game combo in the offseason, as other teams have recently done.

For the superstitious, here is the winning percentage for each uniform combination used by the Saints since hiring Sean Payton back in 2006:

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 6-3 (.667)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 40-25 (.615)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 44-28 (.611)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Bobby Wagner won’t retire until he gets a black jersey with lime green trim

Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner appeared on the Truss Levels Podcast and said he wishes to see Seattle have black jerseys with green trim.

Bobby Wagner appeared on The Players’ Tribune podcast Truss Levelz with fellow NFL players Cameron Jordan and Mark Ingram and touched upon a Seattle Seahawks uniform change he wants to see happen.

When asked to confirm his favorite uniform combination, Wagner told Jordan and Ingram that the Action Green jerseys with the navy blue pants are his personal favorite. However, he went on to state that he would like to see a combination of black uniforms with lime green trim. He apparently does not wish to conclude his NFL career until he convinces Nike to bring his vision to life.

“I’m trying to get Nike to agree with this,” Wagner said. “We’re gonna get black jerseys with lime green trim. I’m not retiring until that happens. So that’s going to be my favorite jersey combo.”

When Jordan asked him if he would keep the blue Seahawks helmet with his dream combination, Wagner said that he probably would because it would fit with black in his view.

“I’d probably stick with the blue helmet, but, you know, black looks good with everything.”

Intriguing, to say the least.

Saints reveal Week 5 uniform combo for “Monday Night Football” vs. Chargers

The New Orleans Saints announced their Week 5 uniform combination for their “Monday Night Football” kickoff against the Los Angeles Chargers

[jwplayer oeFtsHs2-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints will stick to their black-on-black combo when they match up with the Los Angeles Chargers on “Monday Night Football” next week, making it the third consecutive home game in which they’ll roll with the all-blacks.

It’s adding fire to my personal conspiracy theory that all of their gold pants were lost at LAX following last year’s defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. The Saints have only worn black or white pants since, not counting the “Color Rush” alternates.

Either that or dropping a loss to a conference rival and losing Drew Brees to a season-threatening injury prompted Sean Payton to blame it all on the gold pants, which may or may not have been incinerated. It’s hard to say.

The Saints are 1-1 in black-on-black so far in 2020, so this is an opportunity to increase their standings there and in the total win-loss columns (where they’re 2-2). Here are the winning percentages for each uniform back to 2006 (including the playoffs). Because we all know what you’re wearing determines who wins the day:

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 6-3 (.667)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 39-25 (.609)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 42-28 (.600)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Saints reveal Week 3 uniform combination for SNF vs. Packers

The New Orleans Saints revealed their uniform combination for Week 3’s game on “Sunday Night Football” against the Green Bay packers.

[jwplayer 55f1rSAh-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints will be wearing black jerseys with matching black pants when they kick off with the Green Bay Packers on “Sunday Night Football.” It’s the second time in three weeks that New Orleans will be using this uniform combination, having gone with their “Color Rush” alternates in Week 2’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Maybe this will help get them back to their winning ways.

We have to ask: were their gold pants lost at LAX after last year’s road loss to the Los Angeles Rams? The Saints haven’t worn gold pants again since that game, when the Rams went with their away uniforms, forcing the Saints into black jerseys. Since then, they have rotated between the black-on-black and white-on-white looks, with “Color Rush” used as often as the NFL will allow it. It would be nice to mix that up now and then with a color combo that’s been a staple of Saints football the last 15 years.

And for the superstitious: we’ve put together the total numbers for every combination used in the Sean Payton era, all the way back to 2006:

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 6-3 (.667)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. Black jerseys, black pants: 42-27 (.609)
  6. White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Saints break out their ‘Color Rush’ uniforms for Week 2 at Raiders

The New Orleans Saints will make the 2020 debut of their “Color Rush” alternate uniforms on the road in Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders

[jwplayer ytYBtAt4-ThvAeFxT]

“Color Rush” fans, rejoice: the New Orleans Saints announced that they will be wearing their popular alternate jerseys in their upcoming Monday night game with the Las Vegas Raiders, the first time the gold-on-white kits will be used in 2020.

Commonly ranked high among the best uniforms across the NFL landscape, the only complaint we have for these alternates is asking why they haven’t been upgraded to full-time status yet. When you have something so crisp and so clean, why not promote it?

The Saints are attuned to the broad appeal these uniforms attract, having worn them as often as the NFL would allow them in 2019 (teams may wear alternate uniforms three times each year). They even appealed the league office so they could wear the alternates again in the playoffs against the Minnesota Vikings, but the NFL wouldn’t sign off on it.

New Orleans won its Week 1 game wearing the black-on-black combo, but here are their win-loss records in each permutation from the 2019 season:

  1. “Color Rush” alternates: 3-0 (1.000)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  3. Black jerseys, black pants: 5-2 (.714)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 0-1 (.000)

And for the extra-superstitious: we’ve put together the total numbers for every combination used in the Sean Payton era, all the way back to 2006 (and let’s not forget the unique gold jerseys worn in a 2002 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which Cameron Jordan wants to dust off):

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. Black jerseys, black pants: 42-27 (.609)
  6. White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Wearing their Sunday best: Saints announce first uniform combo of 2020

The New Orleans Saints will wear black home jerseys and matching black pants in their Week 1 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

[jwplayer uAbKJp0h-ThvAeFxT]

Make sure to follow the dress code, even if you’re watching from home: the New Orleans Saints announced that they will be wearing black home jerseys with matching black pants in their Sunday kickoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, going with their most-common uniform combination from the 2019 season.

The Saints went 5-2 in the black-on-black look a year ago, so they’ll be hoping to recapture some of that same success in their season opener. Superstitious fans put a lot of faith in these sort of things, so here is how the win-loss record shook out for each combo in 2019:

  1. “Color Rush” alternates: 3-0 (1.000)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  3. Black jerseys, black pants: 5-2 (.714)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 0-1 (.000)

And for the curious: here are the total win-loss records for each uniform combination worn back to 2006 (except for the funky gold jerseys worn during a 2002 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which Cameron Jordan wants to try out):

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 41-27 (.603)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Which Saints uniform combination won the most games in 2019?

The New Orleans Saints won all three of their “Color Rush” games in 2019, and debuted a new uniform combination for the Sean Payton era.

[jwplayer 6bf11BGB-ThvAeFxT]

A number of NFL teams are debuting new uniforms this offseason, but they’re all playing catch-up to the New Orleans Saints. The Saints have one of the league’s best color palettes, embodied with a crisp set of uniforms and iconic jerseys. It’s a great compliment to the city’s character, which was reflected in a recent ranking of NFL kits.

But which uniform combination benefited the Saints the most in 2019? Here’s the full breakdown, ranked by winning percentage:

  1. “Color Rush” alternates: 3-0 (1.000)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  3. Black jerseys, black pants: 5-2 (.714)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 0-1 (.000)

The Saints finally gave their “Color Rush” specials the performances those terrific jerseys deserve, winning all three contests in which they were worn — including two road games with the Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons, and an early-season prime-time matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Curiously, the gold pants were limited to a few preseason appearances and Week 2’s disastrous loss to the Los Angeles Rams before getting phased out. The Saints introduced white pants not long after and never went back to the gold trousers, which had been a staple over the last decade. Maybe they’ll continue to be a third-tier option in 2020.

For the curious, here’s the record for each uniform combination used in the Sean Payton era, since 2006 (not including the alternate, kind of hideous gold jerseys worn during a 2002 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which Cameron Jordan wants to revive):

  • White jerseys, white pants: 5-1 (.833)
  • “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  • “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  • Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  • White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • Black jerseys, black pants: 41-27 (.603)
  • White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Saints uniforms finish at sixth-best in NFL rankings

The New Orleans Saints received high marks for their classic black and gold uniforms in a recent ranking of each NFL team’s preferred look.

[jwplayer cfFkvnkH-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints were wise to select black and gold as their go-to colors. The look is immediately distinctive, and fits the history of the city well. Thankfully, the black-and-gold combination also matches many outfits and interior decorating styles, making it easy for fans to show their loyalty.

It also helped the Saints earn a high spot in a recent uniform ranking from our friends over at Touchdown Wire. Specifically, the Saints uniforms were ranked sixth-best in the entire NFL:

The black and gold work splendidly with the fleur-de-lis that speaks to New Orleans, the Big Easy and the Saints. Good look.

Now that’s nice to see. The Saints have made a misstep here or there — the early 2010’s collars were unsightly at best, featuring an incomplete transition from gold trim to the jersey fabric — but there’s little to complain about the look these days.

While the black home jerseys are great, the Saints also earn kudos for the NFL’s best alternate jersey. Their while-and-gold “Color Rush” kits are the best around, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Saints tried to make them their official away look. The gold pants often paired with black jerseys were phased out last year (only worn in a Week 2 loss on the road to the Los Angeles Rams), so there’s obviously room for change in New Orleans.

Report: NFL won’t allow Saints to wear ‘Color Rush’ alternates vs. Vikings

The NFL won’t allow the New Orleans Saints to wear “Color Rush” alternate uniforms in Sunday’s wild-card round game vs the Minnesota Vikings

[jwplayer Bzpsacqq-ThvAeFxT]

We know now what the New Orleans Saints will be wearing in Sunday’s wild-card round game with the Minnesota Vikings: white jerseys and white pants. It’s a clean look, and the Saints have had success in its debut season, winning all five games in which they used the combination in 2019. But we could have so much more.

According to The Athletic’s Katherine Terrell, the Saints requested special permission from the NFL to wear their “Color Rush” alternate jerseys against the Vikings, but were denied. New Orleans already hit the three-game limit for alternate uniforms in a single season, having previously worn their widely-loved gold-on-white duds in wins over the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Atlanta Falcons. Now that the playoffs are upon us, the Saints must have argued that the alternate jersey rule only applies to the regular season; the No Fun League and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell must have disagreed.

So, at least the Saints are going to look great when they line up against the Vikings. It’s just a shame that they won’t be looking their best. For superstitious fans, the white-on-white jerseys and pants are undefeated in 2019, and have the highest winning percentage of any uniform worn by the Saints since Sean Payton was hired as head coach, way back in 2006:

  • White jerseys, white pants: 5-0 (1.000)
  • “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  • Black and gold throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  • Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  • White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • Black jerseys, black pants: 41-27 (.603)
  • White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

The Saints also once used alternate gold jerseys during a 2002 loss to the Vikings, but it’s probably for the best that those weren’t considered this week, bad juju and all.

Saints reveal uniform combination for Week 16 vs. Titans

The New Orleans Saints will pair white jerseys with white pants for the fourth time in the 2019 season, latest against the Tennessee Titans.

The New Orleans Saints announced their uniform combination for Week 16’s road game with the Tennessee Titans: white jerseys with white pants. It’s the fourth time the Saints have worn this look in 2019, having previously done so for victories away from the Superdome over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Lift up a prayer for the Saints equipment staff, who probably have to use ridiculous quantities of bleach to keep these white threads clean after so many games on natural grass turf.

It’s a shame that the Saints can’t wear their “Color Rush” all-white alternate uniforms more often; NFL rules limit teams to wearing alternate uniforms just three times per season, and New Orleans previously did that for early-season wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys, as well as their Thanksgiving victory on top of the Atlanta Falcons.

For the superstitious: this combination has earned a terrific win percentage since the Saints introduced it, though they’ve only used the white pants in a few games this season. Here is every uniform combination used by the Saints during the Sean Payton era, listed by winning percentage (We’d be remiss to not mention the alternate gold jerseys worn during a 2002 loss to the Minnesota Vikings):

  • White jerseys, white pants: 3-0 (1.000)
  • “Color Rush” alternates: 6-2 (.750)
  • Black and gold throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  • Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  • White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • Black jerseys, black pants: 41-27 (.603)
  • White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)
