OU Insider’s Parker Thune flips Crystal Ball for 4-star EDGE Colton Vasek

After committing to the Sooners in August, Texas Legacy Colton Vasek looks to be changing his tune on the Longhorns. From @john9williams

Committed since August 1, [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] shocked a lot of people when he chose Oklahoma over his hometown Texas Longhorns just a couple of months ago. Now it looks like the Texas legacy is going to provide another shocker as OU Insider at 247Sports’ Parker Thune has flipped his crystal ball prediction in favor of the Texas Longhorns.

The ninth-highest-rated commitment in the Sooners 2023 recruiting class hasn’t announced his intentions at this point. However, if Thune is predicting a flip to Texas, that announcement will be coming shortly.

Vasek is ranked 127th in the 247Sports composite rankings and No. 137 in the On3 Consensus.

While certainly a disappointment to see a commitment heading to your biggest rival, the Sooners still have five-star edge rusher [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] in the fold for 2023. Oklahoma also was included in [autotag]Tausili Akana[/autotag]’s top 10.

You hate to lose commitments, but if the Sooners can keep the rest of the class together and somehow land Akana, they’ll still be in great shape. Oklahoma’s still got a top-10 class, and there will be opportunities for them to bring in players currently committed to other teams as well.

LOOK: Arch Manning and Colton Vasek enjoying their Texas visit

Arch Manning and Texas are still working to flip the Oklahoma commit.

Texas hosted a few star-studded visitors over the weekend for its matchup against Iowa State. Five-star quarterback Arch Manning and four-star EDGE Colton Vasek spent some time together during the Longhorns’ 24-21 win over the Cyclones.

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff are not giving up its purist of Vasek despite his commitment to rival Oklahoma. Vasek had a front-row seat for Texas’ dismantling of Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl a week ago. Getting him on campus this weekend could signify that Vasek is still considering the Longhorns.

Manning is the unquestioned leader of Texas’ 2023 recruiting class. He has been highly vocal about getting other top talents to join him in the burnt orange.

Texas’ class currently sits at No. 6 in the nation according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. A potential flip of Vasek would provide a massive piece to the puzzle for the Longhorns.

Report: Oklahoma commit Colton Vasek expected at Texas game

Brent Venables’ no-vist policy could be tested today.

The Texas Longhorns could have an elite edge rushing prospect on hand for their game with Iowa State. The fact that he could be considering leaving a rival school makes it even more significant.

Oklahoma defensive end commitment Colton Vasek is expected to be present for the Longhorns’ game against the Iowa State Cyclones. His potential interest in Texas is encouraging, but that’s not the biggest story of the anticipated visit.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables has a no-visit policy for Oklahoma commitments. That’s Venables’ prerogative, but his policy will be tested with Vasek. Now, we’ll see if the first-year Oklahoma head coach will keep his word.

Here’s a look at how social media is taking the news so far.

Jackson Arnold and Oklahoma’s 2023 commits stand out on Friday Night

Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting class stood out this week with several big performances across the country.

The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class had another big week under the lights to further excite the Oklahoma fan base. The top five recruiting class has players making cases for bumps in their star status but more importantly look like guys who will be playmakers in Norman.

Five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold had another big night for Denton Guyer. Arnold and his Denton Guyer teammates continued their undefeated season with a 62-7 win over Braswell on Friday night.

In other Texas high school football action, Colton Vasek did what Colton Vasek does, ruining the evening for Dripping Springs offensive linemen.

But Arnold and Vasek weren’t the only Oklahoma commits to have big games this week. Two of the more underrated players in the recruiting class, Erik McCarty and Kade McIntyre, were dominant for their squads leading to big nights in Oklahoma and Nebraska high school football action.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the week.

Social Media reacts as 5-star DL David Hicks chooses Texas A&M over Oklahoma

Wednesday afternoon provided an unexpected turn of events as David Hicks switched gears and committed to Texas A&M over the Oklahoma Sooners. Social Media Reacts.

In a shocking turn of events, David Hicks, who had been trending toward the Oklahoma Sooners for the last several months, chose the Texas A&M Aggies when he made his commitment live on ESPN this afternoon.

Hicks, who was the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country, had been projected to Oklahoma for some time by 247Sports national recruiting director Steve Wiltfong.

It’s a huge loss for a Sooners recruiting class that was on the verge of breaking into the top three had they earned a commitment from David Hicks. This interior defensive line loss comes on the heels of missing out on four-star defensive lineman Jordan Renaud to Alabama just a few weeks ago.

Oklahoma still has some talent coming to Norman along the defensive line in Adepoju Adebawore, Colton Vasek, and Derrick LeBlanc, but missing out on Hicks still looms large. Losing out on a top 10 talent in the 2023 class that would have been the highest-rated commitment in your recruiting class hurts.

Here’s how social media reacted in the wake of David Hicks’ commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies.

In a twist, 5-star DL David Hicks picks Texas A&M over the Oklahoma Sooners

In a shocking turn of events, 2023 five-star defensive lineman David Hicks spurns the Oklahoma Sooners in favor of the Texas A&M Aggies.

Heading into decision day, the Oklahoma Sooners looked to be the clear favorite for 2023 five-star defensive lineman David Hicks. Instead, Hicks chose the Texas A&M Aggies over the Oklahoma Sooners in a decision day shocker.

The battle always came down to Oklahoma and Texas A&M, but with crystal ball predictions from Steve Wiltfong and other recruiting experts sticking up until the moment Hicks committed, it seemed like the Sooners had their cornerstone piece for the defensive line.

Instead, the Sooners miss out on a five-star defensive line commitment yet again. It’s a new day in Norman with [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag], and they’ll win some of these battles. But to get so close to landing a foundational piece for a defense that will be making its debut in the SEC in 2024 or 2025 (Hicks’ sophomore or junior years) feels like the one that got away.

The Sooners still have a talented trio of defensive line prospects committed for the 2023 class. Five-star defensive end [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and four-star prospects [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] give Oklahoma a talented blue-chip trio to build upon moving forward.

It’s an unfortunate loss for Oklahoma, but all is not lost. Oklahoma currently has the No. 6 recruiting class for 2023, according to 247Sports. With more than four months until national signing day, there’s still time for the Sooners to make things happen on the recruiting trail.

Oklahoma 2023 target Jordan Renaud chooses Alabama over the Sooners

Oklahoma Sooners four-star defensive line target Jordan Renaud commits to Alabama.

Well, you can’t win them all. However, after the summer the Oklahoma Sooners had on the recruiting trail, it felt like they’d never lose another recruiting battle.

Under Brent Venables, Oklahoma has won its fair share against Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Texas. But you’re bound to lose a few when you go head-to-head against some of the best on the recruiting trail. And that’s what happened on Monday morning: 2023 four-star defensive tackle [autotag]Jordan Renaud[/autotag] committed to the [autotag]Alabama Crimson Tide[/autotag].

It appeared Renaud had been leaning toward the Oklahoma Sooners based on recruiting projections from 247Sports in July. However, in the last week, Alabama picked up steam, earning a crystal ball projection from 247Sports director of national recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

“I feel that Alabama has always been a perennial powerhouse,” Renaud shared with On3 Sports. “As far as development goes, they have some of the best development in the country. Me and coach Roach have a great relationship. When I went on my visit there, it was very eye-opening to what Alabama really is and what they do for their players.”

Despite the loss to the Crimson Tide, the Sooners are still looking great along the defensive line. The Sooners have blue-chip prospects [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag], [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] pledged, and the Sooners are the favorite for five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag].

Now the Sooners turn their full attention to four-star wide receiver/tight end Malachi Coleman, another player trending in the Sooners’ direction.

On3 Analyst predicts 5-star DL David Hicks to commit to Oklahoma

On3 recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman issues On3 prediction in favor of Oklahoma landing 5-star DL David Hicks out of Katy, Texas.

The good news keeps coming for the Oklahoma Sooners on the recruiting trail. After landing commitments from four-star prospects [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag] on Friday, Oklahoma received a favorable prediction to land five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag].

On3 National Recruiting Analyst Sam Spiegelman believes the Sooners are now the favorites to land the talented five-star prospect out of Katy, Texas.

Hicks is a top 20 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 1 defensive lineman according to On3 and 247Sports. Adding an incredible talent like Hicks to a group that includes five-star edge [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag], four-star edge [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag], and four-star DL [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] would give the Oklahoma Sooners a blue-chip defensive line in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

There isn’t a decision date for Hicks at this point, but it looks like Todd Bates has the Oklahoma Sooners positioned well to land another five-star prospect in the recruiting cycle.

David Hicks’ Recruiting Profile

  • On3’s recruiting prediction machine has the Oklahoma Sooners out in front as of August 28, 2022. Back in July, Texas A&M was leading the way.
