Titans injury report: Nick Westbrook-Ikhine out, Colton Dowell limited

The Tennessee Titans returned to practice on Wednesday and multiple starters including Nick Westrook-Ikhine on the sidelines.

The Tennessee Titans were back on the practice field Wednesday, ramping up preparations for their Week 16 tussle with the Indianapolis Colts and watched numerous players sit out due to injury.

As expected, Luke Gifford did not practice and remains in concussion protocol. The same could be said for the other players Brian Callahan mentioned during his press availability: Kenneth Murray, T’Vondre Sweat and Tony Pollard.

Not mentioned during his session were kicker Nick Folk (abdomen), defensive back Daryl Worley (calf) and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (ankle). Unlike the other players that were held out for injury or rest, these three were not mentioned at all and are new.

In all, 10 players sat out practice Wednesday afternoon. There was some positive news as linebacker Jerome Baker, who missed Week 15 with a neck injury, practiced and was not listed on the injury report.

Wide receiver Colton Dowell had his 21-day practice window opened and returned to practice for the first time since tearing his ACL in December 2023 and was limited.

The Titans’ complete injury report for Wednesday can be found below.

Did not participate: DT Jeffery Simmons (NIR/rest), LB Kenneth Murray (hamstring), DT T’Vondre Sweat (shoulder), WR Tyler Boyd (foot), K Nick Folk (abdomen), RB Tony Pollard (ankle),  LB Luke Gifford (concussion), LB Otis Reese (ankle), DB Daryl Worley (calf), Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (ankle)

Titans place two players on PUP list on first day of training camp

Some injury-related news at the start of camp.

The Tennessee Titans officially opened up training camp on Tuesday, which is usually met with excitement about a fresh slate. However, the Titans placed two players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and wide receiver Colton Dowell will not participate when the team takes the field for practice on Wednesday. However, Petit-Frere could only be out for a brief time.

“(Petit-Frere) will be on the Active-PUP, which will be a couple of days as we start,” Callahan said via AtoZ Sports Nashville. “His injury is not related to his shoulder. His shoulder has been cleared. He had a clean-up surgery in the offseason after the first couple weeks of our offseason program.”

Petit-Frere will look to bounce back after an uneven 2023 campaign. The former 2022 third-rounder was suspended for the first five games of the season, lost his starting job, and logged three games before the shoulder injury in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Dowell suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in Week 17’s matchup against the Houston Texans. The 2023 seventh-round draft pick finished his rookie season with one reception for three years in ten games, including one start.

Titans’ Colton Dowell expanding knowledge under new staff

Titans WR Colton Dowell recently touched on the new coaching staff and how it’s expanding his football knowledge.

We’re one month into the Tennessee Titans’ offseason program and there is already a very clear difference in the way this coaching staff operates as opposed to the last one.

Not only are we getting specifics and fantastic explanations from head coach Brian Callahan and others on different things, we’re also hearing players laud the new staff for its approach.

The most recent example of this is wide receiver Colton Dowell, who told the Titans Colosseum Podcast that he’s learning things he’s never learned before.

“I’m learning things about offense that I didn’t really think I would want to learn,” Dowell said. “Things are intriguing me now that I had no part of. It used to be just give me the routes and I’ll run the route and you throw the ball to me maybe.”

“They’re just explaining quarterback reads and how they’re reading it,” he continued. “Different things that could happen in a defense that would change our route or change our play. They’re great teachers and they can motivate us without having to necessarily yell and there’s not a lot of rah-rah going on. We’re just all — I don’t know how they do it — we’re just all motivated for one goal right now.”

Quarterback Will Levis also touched on the new coaching staff recently, saying his relationship with Callahan is unlike any other he’s had with a coach.

“I think it’s just, for one, earning his trust as a player,” Levis said of Callahan. “I do feel like there’s a friendship there but I’ve never really had that I feel like, where it’s like a friend with a coach. You always have that dynamic that he’s the boss and I’m his worker. But he’s done a good job coming in with mindset of ‘hey, I’m the coach, what I say goes and I’m going to tell you guys what to do, but I’m also here for you guys and to talk about anything.’

“So, I feel like I’ve been able to talk with him comfortably about other things other than football. He’s been great in that way.”

After years of having every shred of information guarded like the gold at Fort Knox, it’s refreshing to have a coaching staff give the kind of information this one has thus far. And, clearly the players are happy with the new group, also.

Titans make 4 roster moves ahead of season finale vs. Jaguars

The Titans made four roster moves ahead of their season finale against the Jaguars.

Ahead of their season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, the Tennessee Titans made a total of four roster moves.

One of them included the placement of wide receiver Colton Dowell on injured reserve. Dowell reportedly suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in Tennessee’s Week 17 loss to the Houston Texans.

A seventh-round pick of the Titans in 2023, Dowell appeared in 10 games, playing mostly on special teams. He recorded one catch for three yards during his rookie campaign.

Now, a look at the other three moves Tennessee made on Saturday.

Titans WR Colton Dowell suffered serious knee injury vs. Texans

Titans WR Colton Dowell reportedly suffered a serious knee injury in Week 17.

The Tennessee Titans won’t have seventh-round pick and wide receiver Colton Dowell in Week 18 and quite possibly for the start of next season after he reportedly suffered a serious knee injury in Week 17.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, Dowell, who exited the game against the Houston Texans in the third quarter and did not return, suffered a torn ACL and meniscus.

Depending on how quickly he can recover, Dowell is now in danger of missing the start of the 2024 campaign, although it’s not like he was going to be depended on for a major role, anyway.

The rookie wideout played sparingly during his first season, with most of his snaps coming on special teams. In his 51 offensive snaps, Dowell tallied just one catch for three yards, which came in Week 16.

Nevertheless, it’s an unfortunate situation for the rookie wide receiver going into the offseason. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Titans lead NFL in offensive snaps played by rookies since Week 8

Since Week 8, no team in the NFL has seen more offensive snaps from rookies than the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans have sneakily had one of the better and more productive rookie classes this season.

This has been a very encouraging development in Ran Carthon’s first year as general manager. Prior to his arrival, the Titans suffered through some truly horrendous draft classes in recent years, with the jury still being out on the 2022 class.

This year’s crop of rookies has been headlined by their first three picks, all of whom have shown the ability to be true building blocks for the future: left guard Peter Skoronski, quarterback Will Levis and running back Tyjae Spears.

You also have tight end Josh Whyle and offensive tackle Jaelyn Duncan, who are raw players with loads of untapped potential in their own right.

The five of them have been the main rookie contributors, and they’re the reason why the Titans lead the NFL in most rookie snaps on offense since Week 8.

Over that span, the Titans’ first-year players have played a total of 862 snaps:

  • Levis: 282
  • Skoronski: 278
  • Spears: 144
  • Duncan: 78
  • Whyle: 69
  • WR Colton Dowell: 10
  • DB Matthew Jackson: 1

Jackson’s one snap is based on a technicality when the team ran a fake punt.

The Titans have produced 45 more rookie snaps than any other offense in the league, with the Chicago Bears (817), Green Bay Packers (740), Houston Texans (717) Carolina and Panthers (714) following behind them.

Not only are these young players getting valuable experience, but the Titans will have a good idea of how much they can depend on them as the team transitions into the future in 2024.

Barring any injuries, it’s a safe bet that the Titans will remain at or near the top of this list for the rest of the season.

Titans camp preview at WR: Locks, competitions, 53-man prediction

In our latest installment of Titans training camp previews, we take a look at the very shaky wide receiver situation.

As we continue to inch closer to training camp, the next installment of our 2023 preview series for the Tennessee Titans comes at wide receiver, a position that has been a hot topic of conversation this offseason.

After having arguably the worst wide receiver corps. in the NFL in 2022, the Titans did basically nothing to address their issue in free agency and the draft. As a result, they’ve found a way to be worse off.

Tennessee rightly parted ways with their lackluster leading receiver from last season, Robert Woods, but only added Chris Moore and seventh-round pick, Colton Dowell, two additions that were hardly adequate for what this team really needed, which was a wide receiver who could make a sizeable, guaranteed impact.

The Titans still have an opportunity to improve the group in a big way with their pursuit of DeAndre Hopkins, but seemingly putting all their eggs in that basket is far too risky.

As we wait for Hopkins to make a decision, we can only preview the guys the Titans currently have on their offseason roster. Here’s a look at who the roster locks and players on the bubble are, as well as a look at the competitions set to take place and a 53-man prediction.

Titans training camp: 1 rookie to watch at each offensive position

Shaun Calderon takes a look at one rookie to watch at each position on offense during Titans training camp.

The Tennessee Titans enter training camp with several intriguing young players on their roster. If you take one look at the Titans’ depth chart, it seems like every position is flooded with inexperienced players who are trying to seize the opportunity in front of them.

Whether it’s someone who was drafted in 2023, or a young player who is trying to prove why he should’ve been, Tennessee has more than its fair share of youth vying to carve out a for themselves over the next couple of months.

That is why, over the next few days, we will be going over one offensive and defensive rookie at each position who we should be keeping our eyes on as training camp draws near.

This article is going to focus on the offensive personnel, meaning today’s write-up will mainly revolve around the 2023 draft class considering the team used all of its draft picks on that side of the ball.

Without further ado, let’s see which offensive rookies we are getting ready to focus on most when training camp rolls around.

Watch: Titans’ Will Levis, Colton Dowell attend Ally 400 in Nashville

Two Titans rookies were in attendance at the Ally 400 on Sunday evening.

The Nashville Superspeedway played host to the Ally 400 this weekend and at least a pair of Tennessee Titans 2023 NFL draft picks were on hand.

The Titans rookies who took in the race on Sunday evening were second-round pick and quarterback, Will Levis, and seventh-round pick and wide receiver, Colton Dowell.

Levis and Dowell have some extra time on their hands for the next month, as the Titans are currently on break in between the offseason program and the beginning of training camp, which players will report for on July 25, head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed after practice recently.

This is just the latest example of Titans rookies getting together away from the building in order to help build their camaraderie — and the team provided some clips of the pair in attendance.

In one of the clips, Levis can be seen signing the finish line with the line, “if you ain’t first, you’re last,” which is a reference to the movie “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby”.

Check out the clips below, which also feature Levis saying hello to former Titans, Will Compton and Taylor Lewan. In case you missed the race and care to know, Ross Chastain was the winner.

Ranking Titans 2023 draft picks based on projected impact

Ranking the Titans’ 2023 draft picks based on their projected impact.

With the Tennessee Titans’ mandatory minicamp and entire offseason program in the books, we now know at least a little bit more about Tennessee’s 2023 draft class.

However, the real evaluation will begin in July and August, when the Titans begin training camp and strap on the pads, and then take part in preseason contests.

Based on the limited information we have so far, here’s what we expect from each Titans 2023 draft pick in Year 1, and we’ll rank them based on their projected impact.
