Watch: Breaching whale crashes onto boat, injuring passengers

Video footage captured Saturday in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez shows a breaching humpback whale landing directly on top of a boat, damaging the vessel and injuring passengers.

Video footage captured Saturday in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez shows a breaching humpback whale landing on top of a small boat, damaging the vessel and injuring passengers.

The harrowing incident occurred in Topolobampo Bay in northwestern Sinaloa. Several vessels were crowded around the whale and their proximity to the leviathan appears to have created a dangerous situation.

Mexico News Daily reported that four passengers – two men and two women – were transported to a hospital in Los Mochis. At least one of the men, a former government employee in the municipality of Ahome, suffered serious injuries.

As viewers can see, the large whale leaps almost clear of the water before landing on the back half of the yacht, collapsing part of its roof and its railings.

The source of the video is unclear but a Twitter user named Karem, who is from Sinaloa, shared the accompanying video showing the collision, preceded by another video that shows two vessels dangerously close a breaching whale.

Omar Mendoza Silva, coordinator of Civic Protection in Ahome, told Mexico News Daily that the whale might have felt harassed by the boaters.

Gerardo Vargas, mayor of Ahome, cautioned: “Please do not get too close to the whales. We can enjoy their beauty, but at a distance, prudently.”

Humpback whales are known for their spectacular breaching behavior. They can weigh up to 50 tons. It was not clear if the whale that landed on the boat was seriously injured.

Angler lucky to be alive after whale knocks him off boat

Cris Lane is fortunate to be alive after a minke whale slammed into his fishing boat, knocking him into the water.

Lane and Dave McCann were fishing Monday off West Cork, Ireland, when several whales began to feed on schooling fish. A minke whale struck the boat as both men were attempting to capture video footage with their cellphones.

Lane and his phone went flying over the rail, while McCann managed to stay on board as his phone captured part of the violent collision.

“My main thought when I surfaced about 10 feet from the boat was don’t drift away,” Lane told For The Win Outdoors. “David doesn’t have any experience with boats and couldn’t get me.”

He said the men were fishing above a reef three miles offshore when they spotted a large fin whale, five or six minke whales, and several dolphins feeding on thousands of small fish that had grouped into a bait ball.

They were more than 200 yards away initially, but the moving bait ball delivered the foraging event alongside the boat, and as they held out their phones a minke whale slammed against the side of the vessel.

“It lifted us 3-4 feet out of the water and I think he gave us a slap of his tail for good measure,“ Lane recalled. “Not much went through my mind before I hit the water as it happened in the blink of an eye.”

Lane said the whale struck with a “glancing blow” and seemed to be fine afterward, and added that his vessel was not damaged.

He later shared words of wisdom via Facebook: “Always wear your lifejacket.”

WATCH: LeBron James says collision with Clippers’ Beverly set him back five days with groin injury

LeBron James is back where he was a handful of days ago, in terms of a nagging groin injury, because of a collision with Clippers guard Patrick Beverley in Wednesday’s game.

LeBron James is back where he was a handful of days ago, in terms of a nagging groin injury, because of a collision with Clippers guard Patrick Beverley in Wednesday’s game.

James returned to the court on Christmas Day after missing a game for the first time this season Sunday. Following the Lakers’ 111-106 loss on the 25th, James said, “I felt healthy going into the game. I got kneed in the groin taking a charge from Pat Bev, and it kind of set me right back to where I was five days ago.”

The almost-35-year-old, James, is already listed as day-to-day by the team. He has been dealing with both a thoracic muscle strain (pulling around his rib cage) and a groin injury.

While James suffered a torn left groin last season which seriously impacted his and the Lakers’ season, this year it is his right groin giving him trouble. ESPN reports that this injury is not as severe as what James dealt with last time around.

LBJ played 39 minutes, despite re-aggravating the injury just a few plays after tipoff. He finished a rebound shy of a triple-double (23 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds) but missed 15 shots from the floor including 10 missed three-pointers, which is the most 3’s missed in a game in James’ 17-season NBA career.
