Wisconsin men’s hockey to open 2024-25 season with exhibition at Omaha

Wisconsin men’s hockey to open season with exhibition at Omaha

Wisconsin men’s hockey program will open its 2024-25 season with an exhibition match in Nebraska against the Omaha Mavericks on Oct. 5.

That same night, Omaha will name its rink after Mike Kemp, who served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for 14 seasons at UW.

Fresh off their 26-victory season in 2023-24, Wisconsin will look to build off their momentum in their second year of the Mike Hastings era. Last year’s Badgers’ win total was the program’s highest since 2009-10 and propelled Hastings’ group to an NCAA Tournament berth.

Wisconsin ignited its 2023-24 season with four signature wins against No. 1 Minnesota and No. 4 Michigan. Those vaulted them into college hockey’s upper echelon, but UW would ultimately fall to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament and Quinnipiac in the NCAA Tournament.

The Badgers added former Northern Michigan signee Adam Pietila and former Rochester Institute of Technology forward Cody Laskosky via the transfer portal thus far this offseason. With years of combined postseason experience, the two will serve as pivotal veteran skaters for a team hungry to return to the NCAA’s top-five.

As every sports fan knows, records only mean so much when we get to the postseason.

In December, the Badgers swept the Buckeyes. Then during their next weekend series in February, Ohio State took three of the four points up for grabs, including an overtime win. That ended up being costly for Wisconsin as it gave Michigan State the regular season conference championship.

The stage is set for a huge weekend of hockey in the Big Ten, here’s how to catch all the action:

Notre Dame Hockey: Irish Split Senior Weekend vs. Minnesota

Notre Dame’s home hockey season has come to an end

Notre Dame’s home part of the 2023-24 hockey season came to an end this weekend as the Irish earned a weekend split with No. 8 Minnesota.

The Irish dominated from the get-go in Friday night’s affair, drubbing the Golden Gophers 6-1.  Carter Slaggert got the Irish on the board a little more than halfway through the first period before an Irish onslaught came in period two.

Cole Knuble scored just 1:30 into the second period to make it 2-0 before he added another to stretch the lead to 3-0 at 8:23.  Landon Slaggert would net a goal before period’s end to make it 4-0 in what wound up being a 6-1 Notre Dame victory.

Saturday night was more competitive of game but not as sweet of result for the Fighting Irish.

Connor Kurth got the scoring started for Minnesota early the second period before Notre Dame goals by Justin Janicke and Jayden Davis put the Irish in front 2-1.  However, Jaxon Nelson added another goal for Minnesota at 13:40 of the second, evening the score at 2-2.

Things stayed that way in a back-and-forth third period and an extra frame was necessary.  Jimmy Snuggerud netted the winner for the Golden Gophers as the teams split the weekend series.

Notre Dame finishes their regular season next week as the 15-15-2 Irish travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan.

Great Photos from Notre Dame’s Sweep of Penn State

Nice weekend for the Irish!

Notre Dame hockey got a much-needed series sweep of Penn State this weekend, capped off by a 6-3 win on Saturday.

The final score was a bit misleading at Penn State scored a pair of goals in the third period to even the score at three before a Danny Nelson power play goal gave the Irish the lead for good and two empty net goals followed.

The pair of weekend wins moved Notre Dame to 13-11-2 overall on the year and 7-7-2 in Big Ten play.

Notre Dame returns to action against Michigan State in two weeks as the Irish are off next weekend.

Notre Dame hockey closes 2023 with OT win

Nice way to end the (calendar) year

Before the clock struck midnight last night, Notre Dame hockey closed the 2023 portion of their season with an overtime victory over Augustana.

Michael Mastrodomenico’s first goal of the season tied things up in the first period after an early Augustana goal.  Paul Fisher then scored a little before the midway point of the second period to give Notre Dame a 2-1 lead.

However, Owen Bohn scored to tie things back up 2-2 before the second period ended and that’s how the score remained all the way through the third.

Cole Knuble however took care of business right away in overtime, finding the back of the net and propelling the Irish to a 3-2 victory.

Notre Dame will return to action Friday, January 5 as they play host to Wisconsin at 7 p.m. ET.

LOOK: One writer picks Michigan State hockey to win Big Ten Conference

One writer is picking Michigan State to win the Big Ten in 2023-24:

The Adam Nightingale era of Michigan State hockey has taken off and it is running in full swing as he enters his second season. The Spartans have a lot of hype heading into the second year of Nightingale, and rightfully so, as the head man in East Lansing has brought in a ton of talent via the transfer portal and recruiting.

James Murray of Everything College Hockey is buying into the hype, stating that he believes the Spartans are set to win the regular season Big Ten championship:
