Who will win the bowl games, what are the most confident picks, and who should win against the spread?

Good luck – we’re still waiting for all the opt-outs, transfers, and coaching changes to settle down. The key is to try projecting who’s going to actually play in these things – imagine trying to pick an NFL preseason game three weeks in advance.

However, if you do the bowl poll confidence thing, you need your picks soon. The goal is to get these close, but one quarterback opt-out here and key offensive lineman there could throw these into a spin. These will change if and when needed, and the lines and picks might be different once the final game previews are done, but for now …

Here are the bowl game confidence pool predictions both against the spread and straight up going from 42 (most confident) to 1 (least confident).

Cincinnati vs Louisville Wasabi Fenway Bowl 5 Things To Know

Wasabi Fenway Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

At least they’re playing the thing. Welcome to the true inaugural Fenway Bowl – the 2020 version was canceled due to the pandemic, and 2021 didn’t go because Virginia had its own COVID issues. There’s going to be a football game played – the weather doesn’t appear to be an issue – and it’s going to be in Fenway Park. Beyond that, this gets extremely weird starting with …

Scott Satterfield is switching sides. The Louisville head coach is taking over the Cincinnati program after this is all done, and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm is stepping in to take over the Cardinals. For this, it’ll be Deion Branch as the interim UofL head man, and special teams coach Kerry Coombs will take over for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati was 2-2 in bowl games under Luke Fickell – he left for Wisconsin – including last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Alabama. The program is 10-11 overall in bowls, lost its last two, and is 2-5 in its last seven since beating Duke in the 2012 Belk. But …

Louisville isn’t a whole lot better at this bowl thing. It’s 11-12-1 all-time and just 1-3 in its last four – it dropped the SERVPRO First Responder to Air Force last season.

The two former Big East brothers haven’t played since 2013 – a 31-24 Louisville win. Cincinnati lost to Tulane to close out the regular season, but all three defeats were by a touchdown or less. Louisville dropped two of its last three, but turned the year around with a big second half run with five wins in six games before closing with a loss to Kentucky.

CFN Experts Picks: Bowls December 16th-19th

Why Cincinnati Will Win The Wasabi Fenway Bowl

Malik Cunningham is opting out. The do-it-all Louisville star quarterback was banged up late in the year and Brock Domann took over most of the duties, but the offense didn’t click quite as well without the main man – playing Clemson and Kentucky had something to do with that over the last three weeks.

The Cardinal O is also missing RB Tiyon Evans along with leading receiver WR Tyler Hudson. That’s a problem against a Bearcat defense that led the AAC in total and scoring D, brings a strong pass rush, and should be good enough against the Cardinal passing game even with QB JQ Hardaway in the transfer portal.

Against Louisville it usually comes down to takeaways. It forced three or more six times going 4-2 when it did, but Cincinnati doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter. However …

Why Louisville Will Win The Wasabi Fenway Bowl

The Cincinnati offense has stalled a bit too much late in the year.

It wasn’t close to being the explosive version of last season, but for the most part it was effective. The defense did most of the work, the offense did what was needed to get by, win close game, repeat.

However, the passing game wasn’t close to being accurate enough in the key loss to Tulane or the close win over East Carolina, and the running game wasn’t quite enough most of the time to pick up the slack.

On the other side, run against Cincinnati, beat Cincinnati.

The Bearcat defense was able to hold up fine against the better passing teams, but was 1-3 against the offenses that hit 200 or more rushing yards. Louisville lost to Florida State in a fun fight, but that’s the only blip when rushing for over 165 yards going 6-1 including the victory over NC State and the win over a brick wall of a James Madison D.

Because I didn’t screw up the world enough with my best college picks against the spread – I was actually hovering over 60% until a late crash brought me down to 55% – here we go with the best-looking NFL picks against the spread.

A slew of the tried-and-true college theories – always go under on a point total over 70, late-season double-digit home dogs – don’t apply here, but don’t worry, There are some NFL versions that are just as wacky.

The 5 Best Bowl Picks, Part 1, coming early next week. First we start with the NFL by going completely off the deep end.

Click on each game for the game preview

5. Houston at Dallas

LINE Dallas -17.5
ATS PICK Houston

Yes, I absolutely buy into the idea of You’re Never Wrong Taking An NFL Underdog theory. But Indianapolis-Dallas happens.

The Colts +11 was the call – just because. That wasn’t Alabama vs Austin Peay. Those were grown men who get paid a lot of money – yes, even more than Alabama – and they usually find ways to keep games from going totally off the rails.

Dallas 54, Indianapolis 19.

However, that took a bizarre 33-point Cowboy fourth quarter to get there. That’s not to say the explosion couldn’t happen against a Houston team that’s dead last in the NFL against the run and now has to deal with Zeke and Tony.

But the crazy part is that the 1-10-1 Texans aren’t getting rocked. They don’t have the talent, and they can’t seem to score, but the biggest loss among the ten was by 18 against Las Vegas. That was because Josh Jacobs decided to single-handedly win everyone’s fantasy week in the fourth quarter with two scores, and then a late pick six sealed the 21-point run to crank up the difference.

Whatever. Dallas has won four of its last six games by 18 or more, it’s playing lights out, Houston can’t do anything right, and …

You’re up 17.5-0 walking into AT&T Stadium on Sunday afternoon at noon local time. If it doesn’t work and the Texans get destroyed, it’s not your fault.

You did things the right way. Lose, and you tip your cap and move on. It’s still the NFL and 17.5 is a ton no matter what.

Army vs Navy How To Watch

Date: Saturday, December 10
Game Time: 3:00 ET
Venue: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
How To Watch: CBS
Record: Army (5-6), Navy (4-7)
Sign up and live stream college football on ESPN+

Why Army Will Win

Both teams do the same thing, but Army does it better, at least on offense.

The Air Force version of the ground game is the strongest among the military academies, but Army’s isn’t all that far off as it stepped up over the second half of the season. It might not be quite as dominant as it’s been over the last few years, but it hit 300 yards in four of the last six games and 400 in two of those, winning them all.

It’s Army, it’s not going to wing it around the yard, but it leads the nation in yards per completion – hitting over 22 yards on the few a game it completes – and that might be just enough.

It’s Army-Navy. It’s going to be low scoring and it’s going to be close. That one play through the air against one of the nation’s worst pass defense might be enough.

However …

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

Why Navy Will Win

Navy can hit the big play, too, and it’s much, much stronger and more consistent against the run.

The Midshipmen haven’t allow 100 yards rushing in any of the last four games, and it’s not like it’s done it against a slew of lightweights stuffing Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and UCF over the last three games.

Army doesn’t just have to run to win, it has to explode. It’s been able to get past 200 yards without a problem – that’s great for anyone else – but it needs to get to 320. It’s 5-1 when it does and 0-5 when it doesn’t.

Navy allowed 200 rushing yards in the 13-10 loss to Air Force, and that’s been about it. Houston ran well, and East Carolina and SMU had a few yards, but that’s been about it against the nation’s fourth-best run defense.

But of course …

CFN Freshman All-America Team

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Army-Navy. Every Army-Navy game is close and low scoring, and it almost always defies any logic or analysis – a bad Navy team beat a great Army squad 17-13 last year.

2013 was the last time the game pushed past 38 points, and even then it was a 34-7 Army win. 2005 was the last time the two teams combined for 50.

It’s going to be low scoring, and as always it’s going to be as intense and fun as any game of the season. Navy’s defense will be a bit stronger, the offense will hold the ball a bit longer, and it’ll make it two in a row.

What are the early college football lines and odds for the bowl games and College Football Playoff. Where are the potential values?

College Football Bowl Game Odds, Opening Lines

Trying to figure out the lines for the bowl games is next to impossible early on.

Who’s playing? Which stars will opt out, which coaches will be leaving, who’s going to care about playing in the exhibitions? Which players – like probably Caleb Williams – will be out?

On the plus side, if you get it right, you can crush the value before the lines start to change – because they will change over the next several weeks, and wildly.

Just like the regular season, I come up with what I think the lines probably should be, and then go in and look after to see if there might be any massive discrepancies.

The real lines will be added when they’re released.

Why LSU Will Win

The pressure is totally off.

That’s not necessarily a good thing – whiffing against Texas A&M in a 38-23 loss last week kept LSU from being able to make a case for the College Football Playoff with a win in the SEC Championship – but now the team can turn it loose.

This is WAY ahead of where things were supposed to be under Brian Kelly.

The first year was supposed to be good, but Alabama was supposed to be in Atlanta this Saturday. If it wasn’t Alabama, it was going to be Texas A&M. If it wasn’t A&M, if might have been Ole Miss. It certainly wasn’t supposed to be LSU coming off a dud of a 6-7 2021 and in need of a slight rebuild.

The team is playing with house money. There might not be a national championship this season, but an SEC Championship? That would be massive.

On the flip side, the pressure is off Georgia, too.

It can say it really wants to win this, but it’s in the College Football Playoff no matter what. If LSU brings the intensity, this could be more than just interesting.

Do pull this off, though, the running game has to continue to work. It’s averaging five yards per carry, and it at least has to come close. Georgia hasn’t allowed five yards per pop yet this year, but Missouri hung around averaging 4.9, Oregon ran well even though it got destroyed. Just about everyone else who couldn’t run got blasted.

That means QB Jayden Daniels has to be on the move from the start, the offense has to convert on third downs – it’s second-best in the conference at that – and it has to keep the clock moving. Georgia can strike quickly, but the more LSU can grind this out, the better.

The O should be efficient, Daniels is accurate, and …

Why Georgia Will Win

You don’t think Stetson Bennett and that crew wants this?

The 2021 Georgia team was epic. It broke through and gave the school its first national championship since 1980.

It wasn’t the SEC Champion.

The 2021 Dawgs lost to Alabama 41-24 last year, and that means the 2022 version loaded with a whole slew of new starters and parts doesn’t get that. This is this team’s chance to put a stamp on its own legacy. Of course, it needs to win the national title to make this season a true success, but around that program, yeah, this matters.

Georgia has to strike fast. This isn’t exactly one of those teams that needs momentum to win, but when it gets rolling early, forget it.

LSU is hardly bad in the first quarters of games, but defensively the first is the worst allowing 71 points – it scored 74, by the way.

Georgia has outscored its opponents 101 to 16 in the first quarter and 244 to 60 in the first half.

LSU has the pop to come back and make this a battle even if it gets down, but that’s a big ask. Georgia is No. 1 in the SEC and fifth in the nation in third down conversions, No. 1 in the SEC and third overall in third down stops, and No. 1 in the SEC and seventh overall in time of possession.

Get up fast, take the air out of ball with the running game and effective drives. That starts with the lines, and it continues with Bennett who should be able to hit the third down throws against this secondary without a problem.

There won’t be any reason to take any big chances.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Yes, LSU beat Alabama. Alabama isn’t playing defense like Georgia is. No one is playing defense like Georgia is.

It’s going to start with the nation’s second-best run defense – James Madison is No. 1, by the way. LSU is 0-2 – going to Florida State and Tennessee – when it failed to get to 140 rushing yards, and so far this year only Oregon was able to run on the Dawgs for 140 and they lost 49-3.

Daniels really is that good, and he’s going to have to get hot right away, but he can only run so much.

LSU won’t get steamrolled, but Georgia will score early and keep it all steadily going. There will be a few big plays, but it’ll be a methodical SEC Championship win.

Get comfortable. Georgia will be back in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 31st for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Why Purdue Will Win

Michigan is playing for fun.

Last year the Wolverines had to beat Iowa in the Big Ten Championship to cement a spot in the College Football Playoff. Here’s the big difference – the 2021 team was 11-1, this one is 12-0. Last year’s team had to win, this one can lose and still – almost certainly – be in.

That doesn’t mean Michigan won’t care, and it would sure like to be a back-to-back Big Ten champion, but from star RB Blake Corum’s season-ending knee injury, to star DT Mazi Smith facing a felony weapon charge that was filed this week, to coming down off the high of rocking Ohio State 45-23, there’s a chance the full focus and intensity might not be all there.

Think 2021 Georgia. Of course it wanted to beat Alabama, but it didn’t bring its A game to the SEC Championship, and the other side cranked up the intensity to win with the College Football Playoff possibly on the line. What’s Purdue’s motivation? How about the Rose Bowl as the 2022 Big Ten Champion?

There’s one other big difference between this year’s Big Ten Championship and last year’s version. Purdue will bring the offense Iowa didn’t.

The passing game hasn’t ripped it up lately, but it’s been steady, effective, and it’s been able to come through when needed. Turnovers aren’t an issue over the three-game winning streak to get here, the running game hasn’t been bad, and QB Aidan O’Connell has been around long enough to not be fazed by the big setting.

The offensive line is good at keeping everyone in the backfield clean, the defense has been great on third downs and getting off the field, and …

Why Michigan Will Win

The Michigan running game should work.

It took a while to get going against Ohio State last week, and not having Corum for more than two carries appeared to be an issue. Donovan Edwards took over late and finished with 216 yards and two scores, QB JJ McCarthy hit the big plays, and the team pulled off the shocker.

Was it totally crazy that Michigan beat Ohio State? A little bit, but it was how. It came up with the home run shots the Buckeyes are used to hitting, and more than anything else, Michigan was just … Michigan.

Very, very, very consistent, all year long the Wolverines would start a little slow, let the offensive line go to work, and then the avalanche rolled over opponents time and again.

Michigan was down 20-17 at halftime, the defense held up, the O line took over, and Edwards tore off a 75-yard touchdown run, an 85-yard scoring dash, and that was that.

Purdue’s run defense is fine, but nothing amazing.

It’ll hold up early, and it’ll get in the backfield here and there, but the yards will come from the Wolverine backfield. Purdue allowed a season-high 215 rushing yards to Indiana last week, got hammered on by Iowa for over five yards per carry, and …

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan isn’t going to turn the ball over enough to matter. The offense has given it up only six times all year without an interception in the last five games.

Like always, the other side will look like it has Michigan in a little bit of trouble.

Purdue will throw well, it’ll get out to a lead, and there will be enough big plays on both sides of the ball to get the social media world buzzing. And then Michigan will go Michigan.

The amazing offensive line will take over, two good scoring drives will come, the defense will clamp down, and the Wolverines will pull away late on the way to the Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl as – at worst – the 2 seed in the College Football Playoff.
