Navy vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

The running game is just okay …

There’s partially a rip, but really it’s a bit of a plus considering it was held in check by Cincinnati and yet it was still close late thanks to the team’s best passing game of the season.

It was only 116 yards, but it was enough to help move the O a wee bit in the 27-20 loss. Tulsa has been okay against the run, but that’s more of a stat thing – everyone is busy throwing on the leaky secondary. The Midshipmen just need to control the clock and stay alive – Tulsa will screw it up from there.

With too many penalties and three turnovers in two of the last three games, Tulsa hasn’t been tight enough. Now it goes against a team that doesn’t get flagged and doesn’t turn the ball over.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Tulsa Will Win

Navy is 1-6 for a reason. Actually, a few reasons.

The defense doesn’t do anything to get into the backfield, which is part of the reason the secondary has such a hard time coming up with stops. The offense might control the clock, but it just doesn’t have enough from its running game to make up for the issues everywhere else.

The third down conversions aren’t there, and the O doesn’t get bailed out by a punting game that doesn’t blast away.

Tulsa’s running game has kicked it in. The Navy run D doesn’t give up a ton of yards, but Tulsa has hit the 235-yard mark in three of the last four games – all wins and should lead the game in rushing.

RB Shamari Brooks – who missed last season hurt – is on a tear, he’s taking the pressure off a passing game that doesn’t have to force anything, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s this simple – Navy doesn’t run well enough, and it doesn’t have anything else to fall back on.

It’s able to keep games close despite being outmatched, but there’s a hard ceiling on just how much the team can do when it’s not getting to 200 yards.

Expect this to be close late with Navy making a late push, but Tulsa will hold on with a long drive of its own.

Oregon State vs Cal Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Beavers got back on track fast.

The defense struggled in the loss to Washington State – the passing game didn’t work and the pass defense went bye-bye, allowing close to 400 yards – but it beat Utah with a strong win despite continuing to have problems on third downs.

The team is second in the Pac-12 in time of possession, it’s great offensively on third downs, and the offense leads the league in rushing, scoring, and total offense thanks to an offensive line that’s doing a fantastic job.

Cal’s defense isn’t good enough to hold up, and don’t assume the domination of Colorado last week was an indication of any improvement.

It’s not that the Bears are awful on D – it hasn’t given up over 326 yards in three of the last four games – but it’s not good enough on third downs and should have a hard time getting off the field.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Cal Will Win

Was the Colorado game a jump-start moment?

The Cal D hasn’t been as good as it should be overall – it’s not getting into the backfield enough and it’s not forcing enough takeaways – but it’s improved in a big way after a rough start to the season.

The offense isn’t going to put a big number on the board, but it leads the Pac-12 in time of possession, the offensive line doesn’t allow a ton of plays behind the line, and there aren’t a lot of turnovers.

Cal might not be a blast offensively, but the team has a way of keeping almost every game close.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a make-or-break moment for a Cal team coming off a make-or-break moment against Colorado.

The Bears will be +1 in turnover margin – there won’t be a whole slew of mistakes to give the Beavers easy chances – but the offense won’t do quite enough to keep pace against a steady scoring stream.

It’s going to be close throughout, but the form will hold for the Bear season against good teams. The shots will be there to pull off the win, but it’ll come up just short.

USC vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The team has been brutally close to finally getting a win.

It’s been a few years without a victory – going back to the middle of 2019 – but it had Washington in big, big trouble before succumbing late 21-16. It played well for three quarters against Oregon, and …

Okay, it got wrecked by an awful Colorado team in what should’ve been a winnable game, but the want-to is still there. This team still has a big goal to shoot for – yeah, getting a W would be a huge deal – but USC is quickly slipping away into 2022.

It’s a lost year for a program in limbo. Everyone’s waiting for the head coaching search to really kick in, and going to a random bowl isn’t exactly an acceptable carrot at the end of the stick.

This might be the time for Arizona to get that running game going – it ran for over 200 yards against both Oregon and Washington – to power away and operate against a Trojan defensive front that’s not getting into the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why USC Will Win

Arizona isn’t doing the little things right to get over the hump.

Even when it’s playing well, there’s a bad penalty here, a missed assignment there, a mental lapse, a turnover, a special teams gaffe, a missed opportunity, something to screw it all up.

The Wildcat offense doesn’t do enough to keep things moving, the defense doesn’t do enough against the run, and turnovers are a huge issue.

Arizona is dead last in the nation in turnover margin.

USC might not be playing all that well, but the passing attack is still the best in the Pac-12, and it should be able to get out to a decent enough start to make Arizona press. There isn’t enough of a Wildcat offense – there’s nothing happening down the field – to keep up.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

USC will be able to go through the motions and win this easily.

Arizona will still give it the old college try, but it’s not getting anything out of its quarterbacks – injuries have been a major issue and Gunner Cruz is struggling – but there’s hope that Will Plummer will be a factor.

The USC offense will perk up when it has to in the second quarter to all but put this away.

USC has a hard time coming up with a full 60 minutes, but it won’t need to.

UCLA vs Utah Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Even with the loss to Oregon last week, UCLA is still deep in the hunt for the Pac-12 title. It needs Arizona State to have a few problems, and winning out is a must, but there’s a whole lot of motivation.

Also, don’t discount what a big deal it would be to get bowl eligible for the first time since 2017.

Utah had the Pac-12 South all to itself, but it collapsed in an ugly 42-34 loss to Oregon State. The defense had a rough time against the run, the Beavers came up with a good balance, and the offense couldn’t come through when needed.

UCLA wins when it runs well. It’s 5-0 when getting to 200 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t. Utah is 0-3 when allowing 200 rushing yards, 4-0 when it doesn’t, but those four wins were against teams that can’t pound and get nasty like UCLA can.

On the flip side, Utah works better when it’s running well, and UCLA’s run D has been terrific – it has yet to allow 200 yards.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Utah Will Win

Utah takes on another level at home.

It came up with one of its most complete performances of the season in Rice-Eccles in a key win over Arizona State, and it had its best running game of the year against Washington State. UCLA is 3-0 on the road, but Stanford, Arizona, and Washington aren’t Utah.

The pass rush has been hit-or-miss, but the Utes lead the Pac-12 in sacks and they’re good at generating pressure. UCLA is good defensively – again, it’s great against the run – but it doesn’t come up with enough big things behind the line.

Offensively, Cameron Rising continues to be the quarterback who can take the Utes forward steadily producing over the last three games with enough deep shots to matter, all while adding a bit on the ground.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Utah will be just balanced enough to get through a tight, tough battle.

This will go into the fourth quarter close, but just how healthy is UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson? He’s expected to play through a hand injury, but he’s taking a beating as the season goes on – will he be able to get through the game and still be effective late?

He’ll be great, Rising will be great, and the game will be great with the Utes holding on for dear life in the final few minutes.

Washington vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The pass defense continues to be terrific.

There are a whole lot of issues with the Huskies in their maddeningly disappointing season, but but the secondary has stepped up after giving up over 300 yards against Cal. Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona were all able to run well, but none of them were able to get their passing games going.

The Huskies have the biggest issue against teams that can run. Stanford can’t run.

The Cardinal passing game has been solid, but they ran for 13 yards against Arizona State and 76 against Washington State. That made it four times on the year with under 100 yards on the ground, and the production won’t suddenly crank up this week.

On the other side, Washington’s offense might be hit-or-miss, but when the team needed something big, the downfield passes were there to get out alive against Arizona. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Stanford Will Win

Washington needed to work really, really, really hard to get out alive against a miserable Arizona team.

Washington hasn’t been bad – the losses to Oregon State and UCLA were close – but the offense just isn’t consistent enough with no ground game to rely on and under 330 yards of total O in each of the last four games.

Stanford’s D has hardly been a rock, but it has the biggest issues against the run. That’s not going to be a concern with the Dawgs failing to get to 100 yards on the ground in three of the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Will having two weeks off rejuvenate a banged up Stanford team that hasn’t won since beating Oregon at the beginning of the month and has just that won win since beating Vanderbilt on September 18th.

Neither team does everything quite right, and they both have massive flaws to expose, but Washington’s lack of a consistent offense will shine through in the fourth quarter.

Oregon vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

Oregon hasn’t exactly been playing up to its capabilities.

It’s still in the mix for the College Football Playoff – it’ll almost certainly be in by winning out – and it’s coming off a terrific win over UCLA, but it’s got the strange ability to play up or down to its competition, and the moment.

Forget the 41-19 final score against Arizona – that was scary for about 40 minutes. The 24-17 win over Cal was too close, and the team let Stanford hang around and it proved costly.

Colorado’s defense is the best in the Pac-12 on third downs, the secondary isn’t bad, and the team doesn’t screw up with a lot of penalties and takeaways, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Oregon Will Win

Yeah … the Colorado offense. It’s not very good.

It’s the worst in the country averaging just 238 yards per game. It managed just 104 yards in the ugly 26-3 loss to Cal last week, and it failed to get to 300 yards against anyone but Arizona or Northern Colorado – the team’s two wins.

How much fire is Oregon going to have? If it brings its full and undivided attention, it should be able to get this done in about a quarter.

For all of the inconsistencies, the Ducks are strong in turnover margin, they get the big plays and burst when needed, and the defensive front is starting to find a groove with the parts relatively healthy and doing a great job against the run.

Colorado doesn’t have a passing game to do much damage.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon will be Oregon and won’t quite make this as easy as it should be, but the Colorado will help the cause by continuing to not do much of anything against a decent D.

The Ducks will get out early, take a nap for a while, and then rise back up with a big burst in the second half to put this well out of reach. Colorado won’t get the breaks needed to make this interesting.

Arizona State vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

The passing game is still doing what it does.

It’s not the high-flying fun show you’d expect out of a Washington State offense, but even after the drama and the issues with the Nick Rolovich situation, the team was still able to do what it does in a close loss to BYU.

The O needs to do more, but it’ll get close to 250 yards through the air against the Arizona State defense, the defense is solid at forcing takeaways, and the entire system is build around staying close against just about anyone.

The defensive side has been good enough, allowing under 400 yards in four of the last five games. Arizona State is 0-2 against FBS teams when failing to get to 430, and 4-0 when it does.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils are still in the hunt for the Pac-12 title as long as it wins out and gets a wee bit of help. Now they’re rested after two weeks off following the rough performance in the loss to Utah.

For all of the steadiness and consistency, the Washington State defense can get hammered on by anyone who’s able to establish the ground game. The Cougars are 1-3 when allowing 200 rushing yards or more, and ASU has to at least be balanced. It has yet to have a 200 yard rushing/passing day, but get the ground attack working, and everything else with this team will follow.

There’s enough of a pass rush to be a bother for the short-range Wazzu passing game, and that all goes along with a defense that’s the best in the Pac-12. Washington State will hit its throws, but they might not go anywhere.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State will get back on track.

The problem against Utah was defensively – the Utes were well balanced and moved the ball way too easily with the most yards gained against the Sun Devils all year. Washington State isn’t going to move the ball a lick.

Jayden Daniels and ASU’s offense will be more steady than explosive. It’ll get out to a good start and coast on a good day from the D.

USF vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why USF Will Win

Was it just a case of finally playing someone it could beat?

USF was awful to start the season, but outside of the easy win over Florida A&M from the FCS, there weren’t any games the team was supposed to win.

And then it got Tulsa and lost in a 32-31 thriller – both teams were on the same level. And then head coach Jeff Scott finally got his first win over an FBS team with a 34-14 blowout of Temple last week.

East Carolina is also in the USF wheelhouse.

The Bull running game went ballistic on the Owls with 421 yards. Jaren Mangham took off for 152 yards and two scores and Kelley Joiner added 126 – now they all get their shot against an East Carolina run defense that been strong but should give up 200 yards.

As good as the Pirate offense has been at times, it’s awful on third downs converting just 25% of the time and coming off a 1-of-12 day in the loss to Houston.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why East Carolina Will Win

Yeah, USF played a bunch of teams it shouldn’t have beaten – NC State, Florida, BYU, SMU – but the pass defense really is that mediocre.

The D couldn’t stop much of anything that those four teams tried to do, but Tulsa put up 535 yards with a dangerous and balanced attack.

East Carolina is coming off its worst rushing day of the season 82 yards against Houston – but the passing game has been consistent and should be able to keep pushing the ball down the field against a secondary that allowed multiple scoring passes to ever FBS team but Temple.

It’ll help that the USF defense is the worst in America in sacks with just four sacks and one in the last four games.

On the other side, the ECU D might have issues against the USF running game, but the line should be okay at getting bend the line.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be fun.

East Carolina has a defense this year to go along with the normally good offense, but USF is starting to find its groove.

The Bull running game will be good, the East Carolina passing attack will be great, and the home team will generated two key takeaways to pull off a solid win.

Coastal Carolina vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

What did Appalachian State do that was so right in the win over Coastal Carolina?

It got off to a hot start, it was more physical on the offensive line and ran well, and the defensive front was able to get out on the Chanticleer playmakers in open space and swarm, holding the O to just 55 rushing yards.

Troy has to run well right away. It’s coming off its best running day of its season with 200 yards in the win over Texas State.

The defense is No. 1 in the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss – it can get into the backfield and bother the Coastal Carolina running game before it gets started.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Troy hasn’t seen anything like this.

It had to deal with the Liberty offense and all of its playmakers – and held up reasonably well – but it was still a 21-13 loss.

Appalachian State played as well as could be asked for in the win over the Chanticleers, and it was still close in a 30-27 fight.

It took a monster offensive performance from the Mountaineers, and Troy doesn’t have that much firepower. There’s not much from the ground attack and there’s nothing happening with the passing game down the field.

The Trojan D might be great, but get down early, and forget it.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina will bounce back fast.

The speed of the Chanticleer offense will offset the Trojan pass a wee bit, and there won’t be enough turnovers to matter.

Troy takes the ball away a ton thanks to it pressure, but Coastal Carolina’s offense will be efficient and won’t screw this up after a great first quarter.

Virginia vs BYU Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is coming back to his old stomping grounds – he was terrific as the BYU head coach from 2005 to 2015 – and he’s bringing a team with a high-powered attack that’s bombing away on everyone.

Only WKU has a better air show than the Cavaliers who are averaging 405 yards per game while not ignoring the ground attack, especially over the four-game winning streak.

BYU has the defense to hold up, but it can’t make mistakes. It’s been awesome overall in turnover margin, but it turned it over four times in the loss to Boise State, and it struggled defensively on third downs in the loss to Baylor and allowed Washington State to convert 64% of its third down tries.

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougar pass defense might be able to do just enough to hold up.

It’s used to facing strong passing games – Arizona State, Baylor, Washington State – and held up okay.

It got bombed on by Utah State, but the two turnovers helped on the way to the win. That was the only game the Cougars allowed multiple touchdown passes.

Arizona, Utah, and Baylor all threw one scoring pass, and that’s it along with the two given up to the Aggies. The secondary will allow Virginia to hit the midrange passes, but it’s not going to allow a whole slew of big things.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia is used to playing in close battles – it’s been in fun fights in three of its last four games, winning them all – but it’s not going to generate the takeaways needed to win the Bronco Bowl.

Both teams will bomb away. Expect more than 700 passing yards between the two, but BYU will run a wee bit better.

The home field will matter here. It’s the first time back in Provo for the Cougars since the loss to Boise State, and just the second home game since late September.
