North Carolina vs Wofford Game Preview

Why Wofford Will Win

There’s a chance North Carolina QB Sam Howell doesn’t go in this, or is limited.

He suffered what’s being termed as an upper body injury late in the overtime loss to Pitt. With or without him, with the showdown at NC State coming up next, there might not be the team’s full focus here against a Terrier team that doesn’t screw up.

There might not be a whole lot happening on the defensive side, but Wofford doesn’t get hit with a lot of penalties, there aren’t a lot of turnovers, and the running-style opens things up for big downfield plays.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why North Carolina Will Win

North Carolina can’t mess around. It still needs to get bowl eligible.

Between needing to win this, Senior Day, and having to focus its lousy run defense on the Wofford team’s rushing style, the focus should be there.

Whether or not Howell is 100%, the Tar Heels should be able to run as much as they want to. They were stopped by the Pitt D last week, but they hit 220 yards in each of the previous four games and nailed Wake Forest for 330 on the ground.

Even with its style, Wofford doesn’t do much to control the clock thanks to a run defense that’s having a rough run.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The crowd will honor the seniors, the team will want to put this away fast, and …

The Wofford running game will be annoying enough to make this interesting into the second half. And then the floodgates will open.

North Carolina will get up big, the backups will come in, and it’ll be on to the NC State game on Friday.

Virginia vs Pitt Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Can Brennan Armstrong play?

The Virginia quarterback has been banged up and missed the loss to Notre Dame – the offense didn’t go anywhere without him.

If he plays, Virginia has the passing game to keep up. Pitt is preparing to face him, but if not, the running game has to start doing more and the defense has to start pulling its weight.

But the expectation is that he’ll go. The Virginia attack was so good over the first nine games that it’s still fifth in the nation even after coming up with just 278 yards of total offense last week.

Pitt might have a killer pass rush, but the secondary gives up a whole lot of yards and the defense can get bombed on. Miami was able to roll up 490 yards of total offense and the pass D allowed close to 500 yards over the last two weeks.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Pitt Will Win

If Armstrong is struggling or can’t go, forget it. Virginia can’t keep up.

If that happens, or if Pitt just wins no matter what, it takes the Coastal and goes off to the ACC Championship.

Even if everything is fine with the Cavalier offense, the Pitt defense is stacked up to handle the firepower – at least it can hold serve once in a while. The defensive front that’s third in the nation in sacks jumped all over North Carolina’s Sam Howell early and came up big late.

Yes, the Virginia offense is high-powered and dangerous, but the line allows way too many plays in the backfield, On the flip side, the Cavalier D doesn’t do much of anything to get to the quarterback – it’s last in the ACC in sacks.

Oh yeah, the offense …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The attack might have stalled in the second half against the Tar Heels, but Kenny Pickett still finished with 346 yards with a third straight game with three touchdown passes. The Heisman hopeful now has 32 touchdown passes with four picks, and it’s not going to slow down against this Cavalier D.

Assuming Armstrong is going, it’ll be a back-and-forth shootout with lots of big plays, lots of fun, and lots of excitement in the pivotal game for the Coastal.

Syracuse vs NC State Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can the running game get its groove back?

It was rumbling right along with star RB Sean Tucker and QB Garrett Shrader going off – the Orange lead the ACC in rushing with 237 yards per game – and then came last week against Louisville.

The Orange threw for 46 yards, the running game couldn’t do anything other than get Tucker going a bit, and everything crashed in a 41-3 loss.

The ground attack has to take over, the defensive front has to keep on being a bother in the backfield with its great pass rush, and the D overall has to keep the mediocre NC State running game from rolling.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why NC State Will Win

The NC State run defense has been fantastic.

It’s the best in the ACC allowing just over three yards per carry and gave up just one score before allowing one to Florida State and three to Wake Forest over the last two games.

No one other than Louisville has been able to run for more than 140 yards and average more than five yards per pop against the Wolfpack defense that’s amazing on third downs, is decent at taking the ball away, and should hold up against the one-dimensional Orange O.

And …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Devin Leary keeps on playing like he belongs in the conversation of the ACC’s top quarterbacks – yes, even with Kenny Pickett and Sam Howell.

He’s coming off a 408-yard day against Wake Forest, he threw four touchdown passes in each of his last three games, and over 300 yards in each of his last four, and …

The NC State run defense will take care of this.

Virginia Tech vs Miami Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The JC Price era – as short as it might be – gets underway.

Virginia Tech blew out Duke 48-17, but the program decided to move on from Justin Fuente in a disappointing 5-5 season. As rough as this might be, the Hokies can still go bowling with a win here or at Virginia next week.

The Hokies defense has been playing well. The offensive side has been hit or miss, but the D hasn’t allowed more than 370 yards in any of the last three games, its giving up 373 yards per game overall, and it’s been great on third downs.

The offense might not be explosive, but it doesn’t screw up. It doesn’t turn the ball over, there aren’t a slew of penalties, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Miami Will Win

Miami should be able to take over the game with a few early scores. Virginia Tech is 0-4 when allowing more than 17 points, and Miami is averaging over 32 points per game.

While head coach Manny Diaz’s job status continues to be in jeopardy, the team keeps playing hard and well, and there’s still a chance for a decent season with a win this week, the free-space date with Duke next week, and a possible bowl game with a win in one of the last two.

The passing game continues to be terrific with Tyler Van Dyke stepping into the starring role, the running game might finally do something against the mediocre Hokie run D, and again …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not that Virginia Tech can’t get the O going – it did just fine against Duke, Syracuse, and Georgia Tech – but it’s mostly about trying to keep scores low and under control.

The Hokies will want to play this in the 20s, and Miami will want to get this into the 30s.

Either way, it’ll be a close, fun game. Teams across the country have strangely played better – for the most part – after the coach got launched. Virginia Tech will put together a good day against the Miami D that can’t do enough to take the ball away.

Turnover margin will matter. Miami will outplay Virginia Tech, but being a -2 in takeaways will keep this close.

It’s a Miami game. It’ll come down to the final moments.

Notre Dame vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Notre Dame. Georgia.

Georgia Tech gets to have a little fun over the next two games trying to make something weird happen in the College Football Playoff chase.

It’s not bowl eligible and a losing season is locked in, so now it can play fast and loose. Notre Dame is the one with all the pressure on to not only win, but come up with a blowout for style points.

Georgia Tech’s offense was able to run well on Boston College, there’s a wee bit of balance – even without hitting 200 passing yards in a while – and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Notre Dame Will Win

All the Irish have to do is not screw up.

Georgia Tech doesn’t control the clock – the Irish should be able to grind away a little bit without taking any big chances.

Georgia Tech doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to matter – the Irish should give Jack Coan plenty of time to work against a leaky pass defense.

Georgia Tech struggles to get the defense off the field, it’s not generating enough takeaways on a consistent basis, and the Notre Dame should be able to keep the chains moving and not allow a slew of turnovers to matter because …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech forced three takeaways three times this season and four times in the other seven games. Notre Dame has lost one fumble in the last five games and one pick in the last three.

It might not be the most scintillating of performances by the Irish, but being boring against mediocre teams has worked out just fine.

There should be decent offensive balance, the defense that’s playing well won’t allow too much through the air, and it’ll be on to Stanford with a shot at going 11-1 and putting the pressure on the College Football Playoff committee.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Florida State vs Boston College Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

Florida State should be able to run for over 200 yards.

Yes, BC didn’t face a slew of high-powered passing teams – it didn’t play Pitt or Wake Forest – in ACC play, but it allowed over 210 rushing yards in four of the last six games and lost three of them.

Florida State keeps on fighting, and it can get bowl eligible by winning this and taking down Florida – not as crazy a thought as it seemed a few weeks ago – and it happens on the ground. Sort of.

Boston College doesn’t do a lot to get into the backfield – the Florida State offensive line should catch a bit of a break – but it’s not just about the rushing attack lately.

Jordan Travis threw for 274 yards against Miami last week, hitting on a slew of deep plays to keep up the momentum from a good run in the middle of the season.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Boston College Will Win

Now that’s how it’s supposed to work.

It took a week to get back up to speed, but the Boston College passing game clicked in with Phil Jurkovec throwing for over 300 yards in the 41-30 win over Georgia Tech. Now the team is bowl eligible, and it can go for trying for one of the better games.

The pass defense continues to be strong – statistically, it helps to play Syracuse, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech – and now it gets a Florida State team that’s been better through the air, but has to run to win.

The Noles are 0-3 when failing to get to 100 yards and 1-5 when not running for 205 or more. Yes, Boston College has allowed a ton of rushing yards lately, but again, that was about playing teams that didn’t throw a ton.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

As we speak, it’s around 80 in Tallahassee, Florida. It’s supposed to be in the low 40s in Chestnut Hill on Saturday.

Florida State might be playing better, but Jurkovec is making a big difference for a Boston College team that’s finally starting to score again.

The Eagles will pull this off, but to keep with the theme of the of the season, Florida State will play another interesting game.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Wake Forest vs Clemson Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Everything is still there for Wake Forest.

With the win over NC State, a spot in the ACC Championship can be locked in with a win this week, or a win over Boston College next week. But there’s more than that. Win out, and at 12-1 the pressure would be on to make the College Football Playoff committee not take a one-loss Power Five conference champion – it has only happened once.

The firepower is every Clemson wish it had.

It doesn’t matter who the Demon Deacons are rolling against, the attack is putting up 400 yards with ease, and it hit 600 yards in three straight games before NC State. Clemson’s defense might be fantastic, but even with a 44-7 win over UConn last week the offense still can’t run all that well and the passing attack hit 300 yards for the first time.

No, the Wake Forest defense isn’t anything great, but any sort of lead might be too much for this Tiger offense to deal with.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Clemson Will Win

The Clemson defense really is that good.

The pass rush and defensive front is the best Wake Forest has faced, Pitt was only able to crank up 27 points even though the passing game worked, and more than anything, the defensive backs are in place to hang with the dangerous Demon Deacon receiving corps that keeps getting deep.

But it’s about the pressure. The idea is to get the ball out of the hands of QB Sam Hartman early, but he likes to hit the deep shot. Clemson’s pass rush should have a say in that.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

By the way, if Clemson wins this it’s in the ACC Championship if Wake Forest loses to Boston College next week and with an NC State loss to either Syracuse or North Carolina. But …

Just how much do you believe in the Clemson defense?

The offense really, really can’t consistently move, but the Wake Forest defense has allowed over 500 yards in five of the last seven games and gave up 482 to NC State last week.

No, Clemson isn’t going to suddenly bust out, but it’ll get just physical enough up front to finally take control of a game – at least a little bit. Wake Forest will hit a few deep shots, but not enough of them to overcome the steady pounding.

Yes, Clemson will finally start generating a few third down conversions.

Arizona vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona has been beaten up in a rebuilding year under Jedd Fisch, but it’s been battling really, really hard.

The team has hardly packed it in.

It managed to get a win over a depleted Cal team, but it played relatively well in last week’s loss to Utah, pushed USC, and it gave Washington all it could handle. It’s been the type of team and season that would have a whole lot more success with more time, more maturity, and more consistency.

Yeah, the Wildcats are 1-9, but five of the losses were by nine points or fewer. There have been too many mistakes in key moments, but there weren’t any turnovers for the first time all year in last week’s loss to the Utes, the penalties have slowed a wee bit, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Washington State Will Win

Here comes the Washington State passing game.

The Arizona run defense hasn’t been all that bad lately, and there’s no worrying about the ground attack in this. Washington State is going to do what it does – it’s going to throw and keep throwing.

The Cougar offense hasn’t blown up since beating Oregon State in the middle of the year, but quarterback Jayden de Laura should get plenty of time to work, he’ll hit the midrange throws against this group, and the O should control the clock.

Arizona allowed 200 yards or more passing yards in four of the last five games.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Once again, Arizona is going to fight the good fight, but the turnovers will return.

And that’s the team’s main problem. Again, it can stay close in games, but being a -14 in turnover margin on the season is a killer. The O really has been a bit better at controlling the screw-ups, but the defense isn’t helping with no takeaways in four of the last five games.

Washington State will be +2 in turnover margin. The expected weather in the 30s with a mix of rain and snow won’t help.

Washington vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The team did what it could in a tough battle with Arizona State.

With head coach Jimmy Lake sacked, and with the offense struggling in the bad weather, the Huskies fought in a 35-30 loss after fighting in a 26-16 loss to Oregon.

There’s still something to play for. Win this, beat Washington State in the Apple Cup, go for a nice vacation and a bowl game.

To get there, it starts with a defense that’s been able to keep playing well through the lost season.

The rough weather over the last few weeks had something to do with the overall stats, but the secondary has been good, the D is second in the Pac-12 in fewest yards allowed, and now it gets a Colorado offense that’s just starting to produce a bit. It’s happening because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Colorado Will Win

The Buffs are starting to run the ball better.

They powered on Oregon State for 222 yards in a stunning win, and got just enough production against UCLA to make the game more than a scrimmage. Now the O line has to power its way through a Washington defensive front that’s been way too leaky.

It stuffed Stanford’s ground game – who doesn’t? – but got run over by Oregon and Arizona State over the last few weeks.

Again, overall the UW defense has been okay, but giving up over 200 rushing yards in five of the last six games wasn’t what this group was supposed to do.

The Husky secondary has been strong, but Colorado doesn’t pass well anyway.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado is finally back home.

It was on a rough run of three road games in four weeks, but the one home game was the win over Oregon State.

Washington is still pushing and it’s still getting just enough production in key areas to hold out hope of winning the last two games to get bowling, but the Buffs will take the home finale before going off to Utah.

UCLA vs USC Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

USC is giving it a shot, but it’s just not there.

It’s a program in limbo, and it just hasn’t been able to find its football ever since the loss of head coach Clay Helton in the second week of the season.

There was still some fight, but the loss of star WR Drake London for the year might have been one body blow too many.

The offense is way too inconsistent. The yards are there, but there are too many mistakes, not enough points to overcome the defensive flaws, and now UCLA should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The Bruins have a massive consistently problem, too, but this is the week for the running game to get going – it’s going to keep it simple.

Arizona State was able to hammer on the Trojans for close to 300 yards a few weeks ago, Arizona was able to fire away too easily the week before that, and now it’s UCLA’s turn to do both.

The offense was terrific in the win over Colorado, the passing game was okay in the losses to Utah and Oregon, USC shouldn’t be able to keep up if the parts are working.

Why USC Will Win

Not to use a break like USC just had as any sort of blessing in disguise – considering the circumstances – but the postponement of the Cal game to December could be just the timeout the program needed.

It’s not like the offense just stopped.

Kedon Slovis wasn’t bad considering all the issues, but not it’s Jaxson Dart’s chance to show what he can do in the spotlight.

The freshman wasn’t anything special against Arizona or Arizona State, but he threw for 391 yards and four scores in the win over Washington State early in the year. Now the program gets to see what he can do.

The UCLA secondary hasn’t been anything special against the teams that can throw. The D allowed 240 yards or more in seven of the first eight games before getting Utah and Colorado.

With nothing to lose season-wise, and with the time to prepare, the Trojans are about to turn it loose.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s still USC vs UCLA.

It’s a strange moment for both programs with USC needing to win out just to go bowling, but knowing that it’s simply passing the time before the new era kicks in.

For UCLA, no one’s seriously talking about Chip Kelly’s job status at the moment – beating Colorado put a temporary pause on that – but lose to this USC team to make it three defeats in a row, and there’s a problem.

Or, UCLA overcomes an early USC energy burst, pounds away and wears down the lines, and then takes over in the fourth quarter to win this. It then takes care of Cal next week on the way to a decent 8-4 record in a step-forward season.

Assume the latter scenario.
