Close doesn’t count in parlays.

For example, last week in my Sure Thing 10-Team Parlay – which would’ve only won you $26 on a $100 investment – I got nine out of the ten right, but Auburn, Wyoming, and Fresno State were too close, and it didn’t matter thanks to an epic gack by Minnesota against Bowling Green.

When it really going, getting seven out of the first eight games right – really, North Carolina against Georgia Tech? – wasn’t good enough. We need ten, and I failed.

But I’m determined to get this right before the year is up.

Like last week, here are the rules.

1. We do NOT take underdogs. Ever.

2. This is for fun – assume you’re going to lose your money, because everyone loses at big parlays.

3. WE DO NOT TAKE UNDERDOGS. I know its tempting, and I know that’s where the big coin is, but unless you’re going for something on a 3-team parlay, don’t.

The ten best college football games for a parlay in Week 5 are …

1. Toledo -3500 vs UMass

It’s a big number to start, and it won’t get you anything, but we’re building. The whole idea is to get to ten. If we can’t get this right, there’s no reason to press on.

2. South Carolina -260 vs Troy

Big number with Toledo, so following it up with a reasonable call on an SEC team with the second pick.

2-team parlay payout on $100: $42.42

3. North Carolina -1100 vs Duke

Spite. Pure spite. North Carolina owes us for picking it here last week against Georgia Tech.

3-team parlay payout on $100: $55.36

4. Ohio State -650 vs Rutgers

Rutgers is just plucky enough to pull this off if Ohio State isn’t sharp, but … nah. Ohio State might make you sweat, but it’s not awful here at -650.

4-team parlay payout on $100: $79.27

Week 4 NFL Expert Picks

5. Alabama -600 vs Ole Miss

There still aren’t any big chances being taken, but taking South Carolina keeps the possible payout high with less risky mid-picks.

5-team parlay payout on $100: $109.14

6. Penn State -525 vs Indiana

I actually don’t love this pick – Indiana could absolutely pull this off – and -525 doesn’t have much value, but it’s still a reasonable call.

6-team parlay payout on $100: $148.98

7. Marshall -380 vs Middle Tennessee

As long as the Herd don’t turn it over, this isn’t where you’re going to lose it – if we’re still alive this far in.

7-team parlay payout on $100: $214.50

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

8. Army -350 vs Ball State

Army worked in this spot last week, and there’s no reason to change it up now. There’s a chance Ball State rises up at home, but Army is playing too well.

8-team parlay payout on $100: $304.36

9. Memphis -420 vs Temple

Temple is way overdue to come up with a big performance out of nowhere, but as long as form holds, Memphis should help bring this home.

9-team parlay payout on $100: $400.64

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

10. Vanderbilt -650 vs. UConn

Okay, okay, we didn’t go too crazy on any of these, and the overall payout isn’t anything special for a 10-team parlay, but if we get this right …

10-team parlay payout on $100: $477.66

I’ll try again next week. We’ll get one of these things right before the season is over.

College Football Week 4 Picks: 10 Best Games For A Parlay

If we wanted to put together a 10-team parlay for Week 4 of the college football season, what would it be? The best 10 team parlay picks

If we wanted to put together a 10-team parlay for Week 4 of the college football season, what should we do? Here are our ten best parlay picks.

So you want to do a 3-team, or 5-team, or 10-team college football parlay, huh?

What, you don’t like your money?

If I can’t talk you out of it, then at least let me help with a plan to give you a shot with the 10 best games to pick for a parlay.

Now, if you actually want to win a 10-team college football parlay – the real list is below – here you go …

Ohio State (-100000 vs Akron), Minnesota (-10000 vs Bowling Green), Coastal Carolina (-10000 vs UMass), Hawaii (-850 vs New Mexico State), BYU (-2500 vs USF), Wyoming (-6500 vs UConn), Oregon (-5000 vs Arizona), Auburn (-6000 vs Georgia State), Georgia (-50000 vs Vanderbilt), and on Friday night, Fresno State (-9900 vs UNLV).

There. Ten teams. All of them are going to win, but you’d only make around $26 off a $100 bet. To me that’s happy time, but I’m weird like that.

And that’s the problem. It’s no fun if you win, and you’d probably lose – watch USF goes off on BYU – and be gutless doing it.

So let’s do this for real. First of all, don’t take unnecessary chances.

DO NOT GET CHEEKY by picking an underdog. You’re going to read below and look for the big shot call to make you a gazillionaire, but that doesn’t work.

So the key to having any chance at winning a 3-team, 5-team, 10-team parlay is to go with a mix of seemingly sure-things with an educated risk thrown in somewhere. And again, I repeat …

Do not take underdogs. Just don’t. Okay, maybe on a 3-team parlay, but never, ever, ever on a 10-team monster.

One last thing – THIS IS FOR FUN. The chances of actually winning a one of these things is very, very low – even though all these picks will be right, of course.

The ten best college football games for a parlay in Week 4 are …

1. Hawaii -850 vs New Mexico State

Start with the biggest odds of the ten-game group as a foundation. New Mexico State is playing better, and Hawaii is always a tad shaky when it travels, but if this doesn’t work and we lose it all before leaving the barn, it’s not our fault.

2. Duke -750 vs Kansas

Duke lost to Charlotte – it could turnover its way into gacking your parlay, but again, we’re building something here. Seriously, if we lose our parlay here to fricking Kansas, then hopefully you listened to me when I screamed all offseason to take the over on the Jayhawk win total of 1.

2-team parlay payout on $100: $26.67

3. North Carolina -500 vs Georgia Tech

The odds are still high, but we’re relatively safe. Georgia Tech pushed Clemson – and lost. North Carolina is weird, but this offense is starting to hum, This won’t be where it all falls apart.

3-team parlay payout on $100: $52

Now we start to get greedy.

4. Maryland -700 vs Kent State

It’s Maryland, so you know how this can turn from great-looking to disastrous in a snap, especially against a Kent State offense that’s way too dangerous. However, this is as safe a call as possible four games in. We’re still building.

4-team parlay payout on $100: $73.71

Week 3 NFL Expert Picks

5. Central Michigan -480 vs FIU

Honestly, I’d like better odds on this – FIU has a few good parts – but the Chippewas at home here should be just fine. You want more bang at this point with a 5-team parlay, but the big cuts are coming.

5-team parlay payout on $100: $109.90

6. Kentucky -200 vs South Carolina

Now is when we go for it. Those first five should be okay – and if they’re not, it’s going to take a massive upset to screw us up. Kentucky played like garbage last week against Chattanooga, South Carolina has a good D line, and you’re paying for that with the -200. But if this is all right so far and we stop here …

6-team parlay payout on $100: $214.86

That’s not good enough. We’re starting to fly too close to the sun, but …

7. Louisiana Tech -420 vs North Texas

So now we’re in. If those first six can get us going, then we go conservative on a too-big number that adds that one more building block before we make a big push.

7-team parlay payout on $100: $289.82

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

8. Army -300 vs Miami University

Realistically we’ve biffed the parlay long ago – gee, thanks Kentucky – but if those first seven really are right, then a -300 call gets us a nice jump. Army has a scary way of giving away points late over the last few games, but this about the safest risk-reward shot to take.

8-team parlay payout on $100: $419.76

9. Iowa State -275 vs Baylor

Seriously, if those first eight are right, then we’ve got it. This has become too big to fail.

I’ve saved a ringer to take this thing to a whole other level with Pick 9. I know Iowa State is struggling and it’s going on the road to face an improved Baylor. Iowa State isn’t losing to Baylor.

9-team parlay payout on $100: $608.77

And now this gets really scary. We’ve built and built and built, and we’ve done it all with heavy favorites to give this as honest a shot as possible.

Let’s assume we’ve done the impossible and we’re still alive. 10 makes or breaks us, so I’ll give you two options.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

10. Option 1: Go for it – Missouri -125 vs Boston College

Mizzou is getting WAY too good a number considering BC is playing backup QB Dennis Grosel and has only beaten Colgate, UMass, and Temple.

10-team parlay payout on $100: $1,175.78

But if that’s too dangerous.

10. Option 2: Safer – Eastern Michigan -240 vs Texas State

The TXST win over FIU on the road is cause for a little bit of pause, but not really. The Eagles will pull this off, which means …

10-team parlay payout on $100: $904.09

I’ll try again next week. We’ll get one of these things right before the season is over.

College Football Bowl Betting: Best Parlay Options

Previewing the college football bowl season betting odds and lines, with a look at the best three-team parlay for the holidays.

One of the best parts about bowl season in college football is all of the different betting options available. Below, we are looking at the best three-team parlay you can make for the next two weeks of bowl games.

College Football Bowl Parlay Bets: Memphis vs. Penn State Moneyline

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday, Dec. 12 at 6:15 p.m. ET.

What: Cotton Bowl
When: Saturday, Dec. 28 at noon ET

For the first part of our bet, we are looking for an underdog to win or cover the spread to boost the total odds for our three-leg parlay. That is why I’m eying the Memphis Tigers (12-1) over the Penn State Nittany Lions (10-2) in the Cotton Bowl. Memphis is a 7.5-point underdog despite winning 12 games this season. Memphis has one of the best offenses in college football, averaging 40.5 points per game (PPG) this season to rank eighth in the nation. Memphis will certainly be challenged by a Penn State defense, which allowed just 14.1 PPG to rank seventh overall.

However, I like MEMPHIS (+200) on the moneyline – to win outright as it has proven to be one of the best teams in the country. If the moneyline makes you nervous, consider swapping out this pick with Memphis to cover the 7.5 point spread at -134 instead.

College Football Bowl Parlay Bets: LSU vs. Oklahoma Over/Under

Photo Credit: Matthew Emmons – USA TODAY Sports

What: Peach Bowl
When: Saturday, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. ET

The Over/Under for LSU-Oklahoma is set at a monstrous 76 points. While both offenses can score 40 or more with ease, these playoff games tend to start off slow, given the amount of time off for the two teams. Don’t be shocked if both use the first quarter or so to “feel” each other out before picking up the tempo on offense.

It’s also worth noting that the Under hit in four of the last five games involving the Sooners. They have proven they are at least somewhat capable of defense this season. Oklahoma should be able to get at least a few stops early in this contest.

While it’s fair to expect a ton of points, bet the UNDER 76 (-110) to hit in the Peach Bowl.

College Football Bowl Parlay Bet: Michigan vs. Alabama Point Spread

Photo Credit: John David Mercer – USA TODAY Sports

What: Citrus Bowl
When: Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET

One of the biggest non-playoff bowl games will happen on New Year’s Day as Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines (9-3) will take on Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2). While Alabama will be without their star quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, it is still one of the best teams in college football, especially on offense.

That is why ALABAMA (-6.5, -118) is nearly a touchdown favorite here. In the Iron Bowl, Alabama was still able to put up 45 points against the Auburn Tigers without Tagovailoa on the field. The Tide should have no problem covering the spread against a Wolverines team that allowed 56 points to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Expect Alabama to win and cover in this Big Ten-SEC contest.

Altogether, this three-team parlay – with the Memphis ML – will payout at +958 odds. A $10 bet would return a profit of $95.80 if all three hit. It’s a decent-sized payout given the relatively safe bets.

Note: Swapping the Memphis spread in place of the ML lowers the payout to +516.
