Clark Hunt ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Chiefs send representatives to Colin Kaepernick’s workout

Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt spoke on Colin Kaepernick and his upcoming workout during his press conference on Wednesday.

Former San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is suddenly the talk of the football world again after the NFL arranged a private workout for him in Atlanta this weekend. Kaepernick has been away from the NFL for nearly three years in a contentious situation centered on his protests of police brutality and social injustice.

While the Kansas City Chiefs are set at the quarterback position, Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt knows general manager Brett Veach to be the diligent type. The two haven’t discussed sending a representative to the workout, but it wouldn’t come as a shock to Hunt if Veach did.

“I haven’t had a chance to speak with Brett about it yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he sent someone because Brett likes to turn over every stone,” Hunt said. “We are in a pretty good spot from a quarterback standpoint, with four on the roster right now. But Brett likes to be really thorough in his due diligence.”

Hunt was taken aback when he learned that the league would host a workout for Kaepernick. After all, it’s not commonplace for the league to get involved and provide players with workout opportunities beyond the annual scouting combine.

“I read the release from the league yesterday and I have not been a part of any discussions with the league about that happening,” Hunt said. “I was probably as surprised as anybody.”

While there have been some rumors connecting Kaepernick to the Chiefs over the past several years, Hunt was unaware of any serious discussions taking place. As for what Kaepernick might have left in the tank after being away from the game for nearly three years, Hunt expects that the workout will go a long way toward answering that question.

“It’s something that I really can’t speak to,” Hunt said. “I think every player in every situation is different. This workout will probably go part of the way towards answering that question, and that’s probably why he and his representatives wanted to do it.”

Kaepernick’s situation is about as different as they come and certainly has generated some intrigue across the league.

Report: Panthers don’t plan to be at Colin Kaepernick’s workout

That means Kyle Allen’s critics should get comfortable, because he’s not going anywhere unless he gets injured.

The Carolina Panthers won’t be sending anyone to free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s workout on Saturday in Atlanta, per Joe Person at the Athletic. The team has been clear it has no plans to pursue a veteran QB at this point, as owner David Tepper told safety Eric Reid earlier in the week.

That means Kyle Allen’s critics should get comfortable, because he’s not going anywhere unless he gets injured.

Even if Kaepernick was never on the table as a backup option, there are others. A case could be made to sign someone like Taylor Heinicke, as he’s familiar with the offense and Will Grier might be a liability if he’s asked to do much at all in the event Allen goes down. However, there’s been no indication of any interest on the QB front so far in 2019. Like it or not, Allen is the guy at QB for the foreseeable future.

As for Kaepernick, a lot of people have questioned why the NFL arranged this workout. Saturday is certainly an unusual time of the week to do it, when most teams are preparing for games the next day. It’s also worth asking why the league gave Kaepernick’s reps such little notice and why interested teams themselves didn’t reach out to him instead of to the league.

For what it’s worth, Reid says the whole thing feels more like a PR stunt than a legitimate opportunity for Kaepernick to show what he can do.

Several teams will be attending, though.

How much of a fit would Colin Kaepernick be for the Texans?

Free agent QB Colin Kaepernick is having a tryout open to all 32 NFL teams. How much of a fit would he be for the Houston Texans?

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is having a workout Saturday for all 32 NFL teams.

USA TODAY’s Nate Davis power ranked all 32 teams and their likelihood that they would be interested in Kaepernick. Davis has the Texans at No. 8.

Would you rather have Kaepernick and his skill set behind Deshaun Watson or roll with AJ McCarron? From an organizational standpoint, this would have been unthinkable a year ago, but the acquisition of [Kenny] Stills says a lot about the current top-down mind-set.

One advocate Kaepernick would have in the Texans locker room is All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who wore a Kaepernick jersey upon arriving to NRG Stadium for a Texans game on Dec. 2, 2018. Hopkins also said in a recent GQ interview that he was upset with the organization for not giving Kaepernick a workout when sensational rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with a torn ACL on Nov. 2, 2017.

Coach Bill O’Brien wouldn’t get into whether or not the club was going to send a representative to Kaepernick’s workout in Atlanta.

“I’ll tell you right now, I’m very focused on Baltimore and I would never talk about anything that’s relating to scouting or personnel, anything like that,” O’Brien told reporters Wednesday. “So, I’ll just tell you, I’m very — like I said to you the other day, if you put the Baltimore film on, we’ve got a lot to work on. We have a challenging game, so we’re very focused on Baltimore.”

Kaepernick has not played a down of football since Jan. 1, 2017, when he started for the 49ers in a Week 17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium. Kaepernick completed 17-of-22 passing for 215 yards and a touchdown while taking five sacks. The loss sealed Kaepernick’s record as 1-10 for 2016 and left his career record at 28-30 and a career playoff record of 4-2.

Are the Redskins the least likely NFL team to sign Colin Kaepernick?

The Redskins will attend Colin Kaepernick’s workout on Saturday, but there’s approximately a zero percent chance that they ever sign him.

Some major news came out in the NFL this week and a major story subsequently broke yesterday in Washington. The NFL announced that quarterback Colin Kaepernick would be holding a private workout for all 32 teams this Saturday in Atlanta, and the Redskins announced on Wednesday that they would be sending a scout to the workout.

So what does that mean… would the Redskins actually consider signing Kaepernick if he looks good on Saturday?

No. It’s not going to happen. In fact, USA Today recently ranked the 32 NFL teams from most-likely to least-likely to bring in the free-agent QB who hasn’t played since 2017, and the Redskins come in all the way at No. 32.

They were 6-3 last season on the day starting QB Alex Smith suffered his horrible leg injury. But rather than call Kaepernick, team brass opted for Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson and a downward spiral. With first-rounder Dwayne Haskins now installed as the starter and a high draft pick assuredly coming down the pike no matter how well Haskins plays, no chance the ‘Skins change course.

Not only do the Redskins currently have a semblance of a plan at the QB spot, but they also are likely the last franchise that Kaepernick — a social justice warrior — would play for, considering that their mascot has been seen as a racist symbol by many groups in the nation.

The Redskins will be in attendance at the workouts, but they have a zero percent chance of signing him.

Poll: Should the Lions attempt to sign Colin Kaepernick?

Kaepernick has not played since going 1-10 as a starter in 2016 but led the 49ers to two straight NFC Championship games in 2012-13

The Detroit Lions are one of the teams confirmed to attend Saturday’s scheduled workout in Atlanta with quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The former San Francisco 49ers starter is attempting to get back into the NFL and will throw on the field as well as take team interviews during the NFL-arranged exhibition.

Detroit is one of the teams prominently mentioned with Kaepernick. That could be because starting QB Matthew Stafford is sidelined with broken bones in his back and fan confidence in backup Jeff Driskel remains low.

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since 2016, when he accrued a record of 1-10 as a starter while also spearheading the movement to kneel during the pregame playing of the national anthem. In 2012 and 2013, he led the 49ers to two straight NFC Championship games, winning one, as a dual-threat gunslinger with an outstanding arm and great rushing ability.

Should the Lions attempt to sign Kaepernick?

Sean Payton won’t be watching Colin Kaepernick’s workout

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton won’t watch Colin Kaepernick’s workout. He’s happy with Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewater, and Taysom Hill.

[jwplayer 6d0G1qX8]

The NFL is hurrying to put together a Saturday workout for free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who ranks twenty-third in career passing rating in NFL history but hasn’t had a team in almost three years despite training five days a week to remain game-ready. Count New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton in the camp who isn’t interested in what Kaepernick has to offer.

“I won’t pay attention because it isn’t a need for us,” Payton said during his Thursday conference call with New Orleans media, hours before Saints practice. The Saints do have depth at quarterback that would envy any team around the league; Drew Brees is one of the greatest passers of all time, while Teddy Bridgewater proved to be a starting-quality fill-in during Brees’ absence. Taysom Hill rounds out the group as someone who has made strides early in his career.

However, that depth may be temporary. None of those three quarterbacks are under contract after this season, with Brees and Bridgewater both eligible for unrestricted free agency. Hill is designated as a restricted free agent, which is a little more complicated but doesn’t guarantee he’ll return.

Payton and the Saints would be wise to evaluate all available options, but in this case they’re hedging their bets that their quarterbacks depth chart should look much the same even after new contracts for Brees, Bridgewater, and Hill are drawn up.

Now, it doesn’t mean that the Saints won’t have someone in attendance to observe Kaepernick’s workout. Payton being disinterested doesn’t mean they won’t assign a scout or personnel executive to check in. Payton previously voiced support for Kaepernick’s ability to compete in the NFL despite a prolonged absence.

“It is a little surprising that he is still available, and I don’t think he will be available too long,” Payton said back in May 2017. “I think the key is the fit and the vision for a club offensively but I think there will be a team that has that vision and has an offense that builds around some of the things he does well.”

What does Matt Nagy have to say about Bears’ potential interest in Colin Kaepernick?

When discussing Colin Kaepernick’s potential landing spots, Chicago is a natural go-to considering their quarterback concerns.

Colin Kaepernick’s impending private workout has been a hot button of conversation, as all 32 NFL teams were sent invites for a Saturday workout in Atlanta.

Naturally, the Bears are a team being thrown around when discussing Kaepernick, as Chicago is looking to solidify the quarterback position.

When Matt Nagy was asked about whether the Bears would send someone to Atlanta to watch Kaepernick, he remained mum on any potential interest from the Bears.

“I honestly have no idea right now,” Nagy said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “I’m just kind of focused in on where we’re at. I’ll leave that up to Ryan [Pace] and those guys. I know they’ll have a handle on that.”

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL for three years, but there’s no denying how dynamic he was as a player. Following the controversy that followed him over taking a knee during the national anthem, many are looking to see how things ultimately pan out for him, Nagy included.

“It’ll be interesting,” Nagy said. “He’s been out of the game a little bit but when he was doing well and playing he definitely was a weapon. I’ll be curious to see how he does. I have no idea. Again, for me, I wish him the best and all that and you always root good for people but from where I’m at right now personally we’re so focused in on the Rams.”

The Bears should do their due diligence at the most important — and in Chicago’s case, most frustrating — position by sending a scout to watch Kaepernick.

Could the Titans take interest in QB Colin Kaepernick?

USA TODAY’s Nate Davis ranked the Titans’ potential interest in him at No. 6 overall among all NFL teams — ahead of the Oakland Raiders and behind the New Orleans Saints.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick hasn’t given up on football yet.

The league has put together a workout for the 32-year-old in Atlanta on Saturday, and all 32 teams are invited to attend.

USA TODAY’s Nate Davis ranked the Titans’ potential interest in him at No. 6 overall among all NFL teams — ahead of the Oakland Raiders and behind the New Orleans Saints.

“What’s the plan for 2020? Who knows? What we do know is that neither Marcus Mariota nor Ryan Tannehill is under contract,” Davis wrote. “We also know that the Titans appear unlikely to land on a top-10 draft pick.”

[lawrence-related id=22661]

Davis does make a solid point here.

Tannehill has been efficient, completing 97-of-136 passes for 1,161 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions since taking over in the third quarter of Week 6’s shutout loss to the Denver Broncos.

But neither Mariota nor Tannehill is guarunteed a spot on the roster next year, and it seems more reasonable to believe that both of them will be gone than that either of them will secure a significant extension after this season.

A lot remains up in the air, especially with such a strong 2020 NFL Draft class at the quarterback position.

[lawrence-related id=22653]

Names like Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love and Justin Herbert will be on the radar of many NFL teams and would probably provide a better option in the long-term for the Titans.

It will be interesting to see what the team does moving forward, but bringing on Kaepernick just doesn’t seem to be in their best interest.

See the list of NFL teams reportedly attending Colin Kaepernick’s workout

Here are all the teams expected to have representatives at Colin Kaepernick’s workout on Saturday.

Former 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick learned on Tuesday that he’ll take part in an NFL-organized workout on Saturday in Atlanta, and several NFL teams are expected to have representatives in attendance, despite the puzzling timing.

Kaepernick will take the field at the Falcons’ practice facility, and will also conduct an interview. Video of the workout will be distributed to any team that was unable to attend.

The workout is private and will be closed to the media and the public, so you won’t be seeing any highlights of Kaepernick’s on-field work. ESPN reported on Thursday that the NFL will not give Kaepernick a list of teams confirmed to be attending, but from various reports around the league, we have a general idea of which teams are interested.

Jets to have representative at Colin Kaepernick’s workout

The Jets will have a representative at Colin Kaepernick’s private workout.

[jwplayer 1vROLFUW-ThvAeFxT]

With the Jets backup quarterback situation in question for next season, they will take a look at Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick is participating in a private workout in Atlanta on Saturday for all 32 teams. The Jets will send a representative to watch Kaepernick’s workout, according to ESPN. The event will include an on-field workout followed by an interview.

On Wednesday, Jets head coach Adam Gase was asked about Kaepernick’s upcoming workout, but he declined to discuss the quarterback.

“I got to worry about this week,” Gase told reporters. “That’s what my job is. That’s a question for personnel guys.”

The last time Kaepernick played in the NFL was in 2016 with the 49ers. It was in San Francisco that he began to protest racial and social injustice, kneeling during the national anthem. Before that, he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012 and made the NFC Championship in 2013. After that, his production started to dip.

Many believe Kaepernick has been blacklisted by the NFL for his kneeling protests that began in 2016. After being released by the 49ers in 2016, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL in 2017. He and the NFL reached a confidential settlement in 2019.

The Jets could use a backup quarterback, but it remains to be seen how real of a shot they or any other team will give Kaepernick.
