Coleman Shelton, Kyren Williams will be active for Rams vs. Cardinals

The Rams announced that Coleman Shelton and Kyren Williams will play on Sunday vs. the Cardinals.

The Los Angeles Rams are looking to get back into the win column in Week 10 and they’ll be getting some reinforcements. Ahead of an NFC West showdown with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Sean McVay announced that Coleman Shelton and Kyren Williams will be active.

Shelton has been sidelined since Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers due to a high-ankle sprain. The veteran interior lineman was the starting right guard for the Rams until he had to move to center when Brian Allen (who has since returned) went down with a knee injury in Week 1.

On Wednesday, Shelton was designated to return from injured reserve, indicating that he made enough progress to potentially be active. With Shelton back in the mix, he should move back to the right guard position while it remains to be seen who starts at left guard.

Meanwhile, Williams returned to practice this week and Sean McVay hinted at him being able to play on Sunday following Wednesday’s practice. The rookie running back has been inactive since Week 1 with an ankle ailment.

Considering the struggles that the Rams have had on the ground, Williams could see a decent-sized role in his return to the field. But in his first game back from injury, fans may want to temper their expectations for Williams in Week 10.

Both Shelton and Williams will need to be activated from IR before Sunday.

More offensive line help is on the way for the Los Angeles Rams. The team announced on Wednesday that guard Coleman Shelton has been designated to return from injured reserve.

Shelton suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 4 against the 49ers and has been sidelined since. His original timeline for return was 4-6 weeks, so he’s right on track.

Sean McVay said on Monday night that “there’s a chance” Shelton could return this week against the Cardinals and while he still has not been activated, it’s a good sign he’s returned to practice ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Rams now have 21 days to activate Shelton from injured reserve and add him to the 53-man roster. If he isn’t activated in that window, he’ll remain on IR for the rest of the year.

Shelton began the season as the Rams’ starting right guard before moving to center to help replace Brian Allen, who also got injured early in the year.

With Allen back now, Shelton should slide in seamlessly at right guard. That could push Chandler Brewer or Oday Aboushi to left guard if the Rams bench Bobby Evans.

‘There’s a chance’ Rams will get Coleman Shelton back this week

Sean McVay said “there’s a chance” Coleman Shelton could return from injury this wee against the Cardinals

The Rams are starting to get healthy again, seeing the likes of Brian Allen, Van Jefferson and Troy Hill return in the last two weeks. They could get another key starter back in Week 10, too.

Sean McVay said on the “Coach McVay Show” Monday night that “there’s a chance” Coleman Shelton will return from his high ankle sprain this week against the Cardinals. Shelton suffered the injury in Week 4 and was given a return timeline of 4-6 weeks.

He’s been on injured reserve, so the Rams would need to activate him in order for him to play. He has not yet been designated to return to practice.

“There’s a chance that you get Coleman Shelton back this week, which would be big,” McVay said. “Really important. I thought he’s really played well with the opportunities he’s had this year. So if we are able to get him back, that would provide a boost to the offensive line.”

Shelton was the Rams’ starting right guard to begin the season, but he filled in at center when Allen injured his knee. If he does return, he would likely take back his spot at right guard, which could move Chandler Brewer or Oday Aboushi to left guard.

McVay told reporters Monday that it’s “a possibility” the Rams will make a change on the interior of their line on the left side. In other words, they could bench the struggling Bobby Evans.

Rams place two players on injured reserve ahead of matchup vs. Cowboys

The #Rams sent safety Jordan Fuller and center Coleman Shelton to injured reserve on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Rams placed two players on injured reserve on Saturday ahead of their matchup with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5. Injuries have been a concern for the team, especially in their secondary and on the offensive line.

Safety Jordan Fuller and center Coleman Shelton were put on the injured reserve list, clearing the way for the activation of running back Malcolm Brown to the 53-man roster. Additionally, tight end Jacob Harris and center Matt Skura were also activated from the practice squad, clearing the way for them to participate on Sunday if the Rams’ coaching staff thinks they might give Los Angeles a better chance to win.

Fuller and Shelton were both slated to be key contributors for the Rams in 2022, and their absence will be felt as the team heads into the meat of its schedule. The running back, Brown, has had moments of brilliance for Los Angeles in limited action and may help revitalize their ground game this week.

Harris and Skura are long-shots to make the gameday roster tomorrow, though their activations are a good sign for their long-term trajectory with the Rams. As the next men up when their teammates were designated for injured reserve, both players are set to see snaps if further injuries require Los Angeles to amend their depth chart.

These moves were an inauspicious start to the weekend for a team that hopes to get back into contention with a win on Sunday. Certainly, the deactivation of two players who could have been starters is a kick in the teeth to the Rams ahead of such a crucial matchup, but the team has been known for its resilience in the face of adversity over the last several years.

As they look to get their record back over .500 against the Cowboys, Los Angeles’ coaching staff will put together the best possible game plan to utilize the available talent they’ll have at their disposal and could turn some heads with a win in Week 5.

Coleman Shelton suffers high-ankle sprain, will miss 4-6 weeks

Coleman Shelton has been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain and will miss 4-6 weeks for the Rams.

Coleman Shelton left Monday night’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers with an ankle injury, leaving the Los Angeles Rams even thinner along the offensive line. While announcing the injury news from the team’s loss in Week 4, Sean McVay revealed that Shelton suffered a high-ankle sprain and will miss four-to-six weeks.

The offensive line injuries are piling up for the Rams early this season as Shelton, Brian Allen, David Edwards, and Tremayne Anchrum Jr. have all sustained injuries. Partly due to the injuries, Matthew Stafford was sacked seven times by the 49ers on Monday night.

The Rams have had solid injury luck when it comes to injuries since McVay arrived, however, this year has been the complete opposite. With Shelton set to miss at least a month of action, Jeremiah Kolone is likely going to start at center until Allen can return from his knee injury.

After falling to 2-2 on the season following a blowout loss to the 49ers, the Rams could be without three of their starting interior offensive linemen in Week 5 versus a talented defensive front in the Dallas Cowboys.

6 takeaways from Rams’ 24-9 loss to the 49ers

The Rams fell to the 49ers in Week 4 on Monday Night Football and here are our immediate takeaways from the game.

The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers are two divisional teams that simply don’t like each other. Despite the Rams defeating the 49ers in the NFC title game a season ago and proceeding to win the Super Bowl, San Francisco has dominated the matchup with Los Angeles since Sean McVay arrived in 2017.

Entering Monday’s showdown on primetime, the 49ers had won six consecutive regular-season meetings. San Francisco extended that streak to seven games after blowing out Los Angeles 24-9 at home in Week 4.

Immediately following the double-digit loss against the 49ers, here are six takeaways for the Rams.

Coleman Shelton exits game vs. 49ers with ankle injury, has been ruled out

Coleman Shelton exited with an ankle injury early in the Rams’ Week 4 matchup with the 49ers and is questionable to return.

The Los Angeles Rams already have a bevy of injuries to their interior offensive line and they have another one early in Monday’s showdown with the San Francisco 49ers. On the team’s first offensive drive of the game, Coleman Shelton limped off of the field and went to the locker room with an ankle injury.

After going to the locker room, Shelton would return to the game on the second offensive drive of the game. However, the versatile interior lineman would head back to the locker room in the first quarter and he’s since been ruled out for the rest of the game.

The Rams are already without Brian Allen due to a knee injury and Shelton was replacing Allen at the center position after starting the season at right guard. Aside from Allen and Shelton, David Edwards and Tremayne Anchrum Jr. have also suffered injuries in the interior of the offensive line.

It looks like it will be Jeremiah Kolone — the third-string center for Los Angeles — will be starting at center for the rest of Monday night’s game.

Mark Sanchez delivers classic line during Falcons-Rams broadcast

Mark Sanchez with a classic one-liner during Falcons-Rams

Give Mark Sanchez credit, he nailed this one-liner.

The Rams were playing the Falcons on Sunday at SoFi and Sanchez had the color assignment on the game.

He was impressed with the effort of Rams offensive lineman Coleman Shelton and Sanchez said:

“Shelton is clearing out defenders faster than a teenager clears his search history.”

That line alone is worth a Sports Emmy nomination.

Could Coleman Shelton’s move to center spark Rams’ running game?

The Rams ran the ball well when Coleman Shelton was at center last season. Could his move to center help this week against the Falcons?

There were already some concerns about the Rams’ offensive line coming into this season after losing Andrew Whitworth (retirement) and Austin Corbett (free agency). They replaced those two players with Joe Noteboom and Coleman Shelton, but just one week into the regular season, the Rams are already being forced to make a change.

Brian Allen injured his knee in Week 1 and will miss 2-4 weeks. The ripple effect is Shelton moving from right guard to center, and Tremayne Anchrum Jr. stepping in at right guard. Anchrum is making his first career start and while the expectations have to be managed, Shelton might be a better fit at center than guard.

It’s possible his move inside will provide a spark for the running game, which provided a league-low 52 yards on the ground in Week 1.

In three games that Shelton played at least 90% of the snaps, the Rams rushed for 128 yards against the Jaguars, 89 against the Cardinals and 159 against the Vikings. Sony Michel was the starting running back in each of those games and was playing his best football of the season.

But it shouldn’t be overlooked that Shelton was the center in those solid rushing performances. He had the second-best run blocking grade in that Week 14 win over the Cardinals and finished the game with a 62.4 overall grade from PFF. He was solid as the starting center against the Jaguars when the Rams rushed for 128 yards, posting a 66.8 overall grade and 63.6 as a run blocker.

This isn’t exclusively about Shelton’s ability at center. The offensive line as a whole needs to play better, but perhaps getting Shelton – who’s 2 inches taller and has longer arms than Allen – at center will help the running game, especially with the physical Anchrum stepping in at guard.

It’ll be fascinating to watch the combination of those two on the interior after the line struggled to open up many running lanes in Week 1.

Tremayne Anchrum Jr.: Rams will ‘be just fine’ with Coleman Shelton at center

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. is confident in Coleman Shelton moving to center in wake of Brian Allen injuries

The Rams’ offensive line suffered a significant blow in Week 1. Brian Allen injured his knee and will miss 2-4 weeks, leaving Los Angeles without its starting center.

Coleman Shelton will move from right guard to center and Tremayne Anchrum Jr. will step in as the starting right guard, giving the Rams a new look on the interior for the next few weeks.

Anchrum spoke to the media on Monday ahead of his first career start, and he’s very confident in the offensive line with Shelton at center. Anchrum shared some great insight on what he learns from Shelton and what makes him a very good lineman on the inside.

“It’s like having a coach on the field. The guy’s incredibly smart. He’s super athletic. He’s very technical. The guy thinks three, four steps ahead,” Anchrum said. “I think having him on my team, playing next to him is such an advantage for me, just being able to soak up information from him like a sponge, being able to watch his techniques. Coleman’s not the heaviest guy but when Coleman’s out there and he’s playing, he’s sharp on his technique. He’s very diligent in his body positions. He’s always in the right positions and you can really take a lot from that when you take how he looks at the game and apply it to how you play, a lot of good things come. Sad what happened to Brian but we’re gonna be just fine with Coleman at center.”

Anchrum said he’s “really excited” to be making his first start, adding that he “worked really hard” to play anywhere on the offensive line, from guard to offensive tackle. That versatility is coming in handy now with Allen out, giving him an opportunity to step in at guard.
