Rams sign QB Case Cookus, C Cole Toner to practice squad

The Rams have added a quarterback to the practice squad in case Matthew Stafford or John Wolford can’t play this week

We’ve gotten our first sign that Matthew Stafford and/or John Wolford may not be able to play on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Los Angeles Rams announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed quarterback Case Cookus to the practice squad, along with center Cole Toner.

Stafford is being evaluated for a concussion after leaving Sunday’s game in New Orleans. Wolford missed the game with a neck injury, which he suffered in Week 10 when he started in place of Stafford. Bryce Perkins replaced Stafford against the Saints this past week.

Cookus, who’s from Thousand Oaks, came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and has had stints with the Giants, Broncos, Vikings and Raiders since then. He was last on an NFL roster in August of 2021 but was cut by the Raiders before the season began. Since then, he spent five days in the CFL with the Edmonton Elks and was recently drafted into the USFL by the Philadelphia Stars.

Toner was a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals back in 2016 and has played 14 games in his NFL career. He was last with the Texans in 2021, playing and starting one game.

Dolphins work out three centers on Sunday

Some potential depth options for Miami.

It’s been widely known that Connor Williams is planning to be the starting center for the Miami Dolphins when the regular season starts, but at this point, there’s not much behind him.

Last year’s starting center, Michael Deiter, is dealing with a foot injury that’s kept him out of practice, leaving Cole Banwart and Adam Pankey as the only players taking reps behind Williams in the middle.

On Sunday, the Dolphins worked out three centers – Cohl Cabral, Jake Lacina and Cole Toner, according to the NFL’s transaction wire. This follows a practice in which Pankey had a few poor snaps and while Williams has been struggling that department as well, they can’t have multiple players failing to get the ball to the quarterback.

Cabral was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and has bounced around to the Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints since then. He has yet to play in a regular season game.

Lacina spent the spring in the USFL, playing for the New Jersey Generals. He was part of an offensive line that helped gain the most yards on the ground per game (160.6) in the league. In the NFL, Lacina was once on the Vikings, but he’s never played in a game.

Toner may be the most familiar name of the group, considering he was a fifth-round selection back in 2016 out of Harvard. Originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals, Toner spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots during his first two seasons before finding a landing spot with the Los Angeles Chargers for three years. He spent last season with the Houston Texans and has played in 13 NFL games, starting three of them.

The 30-year-old had been battling a knee injury that branded him as questionable for the Week 8 tilt with the Los Angeles Rams. Britt missed Week 6 at the Indianapolis Colts with the same knee issue.

Britt had missed all of 2020 as he recovered from a torn ACL sustained in his final year with the Seattle Seahawks in October 2019.

The Texans also signed center-guard Cole Toner from the practice squad to the active roster.

Houston’s two standard elevations from the practice squad are guard Lane Taylor and linebacker Hardy Nickerson.

The Texans also signed punter Johnny Townsend to the practice squad.

Texans activate LB Kevin Pierre-Louis from injured reserve, elevate C-G Cole Toner

The Houston Texans have activated linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis from injured reserve and have elevated guard Cole Toner from the practice squad.

The Houston Texans have made a couple of moves ahead of their Week 7 showdown with the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at 3:25 p.m. Central Time at State Farm Stadium.

Houston activated linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis from injured reserve. The 6-0, 231-pound linebacker had been placed on injured reserve on Sept. 16 after sustaining a hamstring injury at the end of preseason. Pierre-Louis will be eligible to see his first playing time of the 2021 campaign.

The Texans also used one of their standard elevations on center-guard Cole Toner. The former Los Angeles Charger could also his first action of the season as the Texans are working through some availability issues along the interior offensive line. Starting center Justin Britt is questionable with a knee injury, and Justin McCray could start once more in his place. Houston would need more depth along the offensive line.

If Toner were to get in the game, it would also be his first action of the season.

Texans place LT Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve among other roster moves

The Houston Texans have placed left tackle Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve along with other roster moves ahead of Week 6 at the Indianapolis Colts.

The Texans also made other roster moves ahead of their Week 6 showdown with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Lucas Oil Stadium.

With the open spot on the roster, the Texans signed quarterback Jeff Driskel to the active roster to backup rookie Davis Mills on game day.

Houston also elevated guard Cole Toner and guard Lane Taylor to the practice squad as part of their standard elevations.

The Texans also activated rookie receiver Nico Collins from injured reserve. He will make his return after getting injured in Week 2 at the Cleveland Browns.

To make room for Collins, the Texans released linebacker Joe Thomas from the active roster.

LOOK: Recapping the Texans’ roster moves to get to 53 players

The Houston Texans made a series of moves to finalize their 53-man roster. Here is a look at the moves so far.

The Houston Texans have made a series of moves to get to 53 players on their active roster on Aug. 31.

General manager Nick Caserio said early in training camp that the goal of roster construction is not to look for the best 53 players, but to take the whole roster as a whole, including the possibility of players who could join the practice squad.

“There’s always going to be a lot of movement on and off the roster,” Caserio said on July 28. “We have 50 new players. Again, it’s a great opportunity for everyone to kind of get started. The goal for training camp is for everybody to establish a level of performance. We’re not going to predetermine everything. Nobody has a defined role. We’re going to go out there and let the players take care of themselves, and that will sort itself out.”

Here is a recap of the moves the Texans made

The Chargers made a few roster moves ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Broncos.

Los Angeles signed running back Troymaine Pope and offensive lineman Cole Toner to the active roster. In addition, the team activated tackle Trey Pipkins from Reserve/COVID-19 list and wide receiver Jason Moore from the practice squad.

To fill Moore’s spot on the practice squad, L.A. signed tight end Matt Sokol.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that there was a chance that Pipkins could still play, despite being on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He will start at right tackle if Bryan Bulaga is inactive.

Lynn mentioned that either Toner or Scott Quessenberry will start at right guard since Trai Turner remains out and Ryan Groy was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
