Broncos sign 3 players to 1-year tenders, waive an offensive tackle

The Broncos signed OLB Malik Reed, QB Brett Rypien and DB P.J. Locke to 1-year tenders and waived OT Cody Conway.

The Denver Broncos kicked off their (voluntary) offseason program on Monday with a few housekeeping transactions.

First, the Broncos signed outside linebacker Malik Reed to a one-year right of first refusal tender worth $2.433 million, the team announced. Other teams will be allowed to make Reed an offer but Denver will get an opportunity to match any offer the outside linebacker receives.

After that, the Broncos signed quarterback Brett Rypien and safety P.J. Locke to their one-year exclusive rights free agent tenders. These signings were mostly formalities because ERFA players have no leverage in negotiations.

Rypien is now set to earn $965,000 this season and Locke will receive $895,000, according to OverTheCap.com.

Denver also waived offensive tackle Cody Conway, who missed last season after suffering a torn ACL during training camp. After parting ways with Conway, the Broncos’ remaining offensive tackles are Garett Bolles, Billy Turner, Calvin Anderson, Tom Compton, Quinn Bailey, Drew Himmelman and Casey Tucker.

Steelers host 3 players for tryouts, including former Penn State DE

Pittsburgh hosted three players for visits, including center and tackle positions impacted by Reserve/COVID-19 list and OLB depth.

Two days after his release from the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, former Penn State defensive end Shareef Miller found himself on the other side of Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh.

A fourth-round selection by the Eagles in 2019, Miller was active for just two games his rookie year — two snaps on special teams. He was released before the start of the 2020 season and spent some time with the Carolina Panthers before being re-signed to the Eagles practice squad.

While Miller was a defensive end for the Eagles, his 6’4, 255-lb. frame and pass rush skills project him as an outside linebacker in Pittsburgh. The team needs reinforcements after losing Bud Dupree to a torn ACL in Wednesday’s game.

As a Nittany Lion, Miller played in 40 games and recorded 100 tackles (58 solo), with 31.5 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two recovered fumbles.

Pittsburgh also brought in former Texas center Zach Shackelford and former Syracuse offensive tackle Cody Conway, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Conway signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans before bouncing around the league with the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. Shackelford signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft. He was released on cut-down day.

With the Shackelford tryout, the Steelers must anticipate that center Maurkice Pouncey will be out for some time. He was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list before kickoff on Wednesday.

Packers add OT Cody Conway to practice squad

The Packers filled their practice squad with offensive tackle Cody Conway.

In addition to promoting offensive tackle Yosh Nijman to the active roster, the Green Bay Packers signed offensive tackle Cody Conway to the practice squad.

The team worked out several different offensive tackles on Tuesday but settled on Conway, an undrafted free agent rookie from Syracuse.

The Packers needed to add an offensive lineman to the roster after Cole Madison suffered a season-ending knee injury during last Thursday’s practice and Bryan Bulaga left Sunday night’s loss in San Francisco with a knee injury.

Nijman’s promotion opened a spot on the practice squad for Conway, the 6-6, 307-pounder.

The Tennessee Titans originally signed Conway on May 10. He played in one preseason game for the Titans before being waived/injured.

The Illinois native played 40 games with 33 starts at left tackle for Syracuse, including 30 straight starts to end his collegiate career. He is now the only offensive lineman on the Packers’ practice squad.
