Coby White has big game in Chicago Bulls first win of season

Coby White had a big game in the Bulls win over the Bucks.

With the 2024-25 NBA season tipping off this week, some former UNC basketball standouts are back on the court. And for Coby White, he’s out to prove that he can be even better than last season when he finished second in the Most Improved Player race.

So far, White is off to a good start as he helped lead the Chicago Bulls to their first win of the season on Friday night.

In the Bulls 133-122 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, White had a team-high 35 points. He shot 12-of-20 from the field including 7-of-13 from the three-point line. That’s an area where White has excelled at, proving to be a legit three-point shooter in this league.

In addition to White’s 35 points, he dished out five assists and had four steals.

With his three-point performance, White also passed Ben Gordon for third-most three-pointers in Bulls’ franchise history. He now has 771 to Gordon’s 770.

It’s a good start to the season for White as he helped contribute in this big win for the Bulls. With a season that is expected to be bumpy again for the Bulls, White could be the bright spot for the franchise.

Former UNC star Coby White earns spot in top 100 list

Coby White ranked inside the Top 100 among HoopsHype’s top NBA players.

With the NBA in the offseason and gearing up for what next year looks like, HoopsHype recently released its top 100 players in the NBA for the upcoming year. Former UNC star guard Coby White is on the list.

Coby White played for the baby-blue and white in just 2019 as a freshman coming from Greenfield School in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The true freshman averaged 16.1 points per game in 35 collegiate games for North Carolina.

He also added 3.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 42% from the field and 35% from the three-point line. He was named to the 2018-19 All-ACC team as well as the ACC All-Freshman first team.

After his freshman season, White entered the NBA Draft where he was selected by the Chicago Bulls as the No. 7 overall pick in the draft.

Since his rookie season in 2020, White has averaged a career 14.1 points per game through five seasons. Last year was his best where he averaged 19.1 points per game, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game as well.

As his time and opportunities continue to increase, White could easily use this season to break into the top 50 next season; for now, White will be the highest-ranked Tar Heel in the NBA.

The best of Coby White with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA’s 2023-24 regular season

There were a handful of bright spots worth looking back on. Among them was Coby White.

Fans of the Chicago Bulls would like to forget about their favorite team’s 2023-24 campaign. Especially after an injury-riddled regular season finally killed the most recent rebuild of the team built around players like injured floor general Lonzo Ball, star combo guard Zach LaVine and veteran big man Nikola Vucevic.

But despite the season-derailing injuries to LaVine and Ball (and later on in the season, forward Patrick Williams as well), there were a handful of bright spots worth looking back on for fans. Among them was the growth of young players like Onuralp Bitim, Adama Sanogo, and especially that of Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White.

Regarding the best of the player of White in particular, the Bulls’ organization put together a highlight clip of the best of his play from this past regular season.

Should the Chicago Bulls rip off the band-aid and trade away everyone?

How hard should the front office go in reimagining this roster?

The Chicago Bulls‘ front office has finally woken up to the fact that major changes are needed if this ball club is going to compete in future seasons. But there are plenty worried that the execs might not go far enough in retooling the roster. Should the Bulls rip off the band-aid and trade away everyone?

It goes without saying that the Bulls need to move on from injured guard Lonzo Ball, often-injured combo guard Zach LaVine, and aging big man Nikola Vucevic. But what about players like found gold reserve guard Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu? Are they off the table in terms of tradeable players?

How hard should the front office go in reimagining this roster? The hosts of the “CHGO Bulls” podcast took a closer look at the range of possibility on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts on how Chicago should be approaching this rebuild.

Coby White listed as Chicago Bulls’ most untouchable trade asset

Coby White is the closest thing to an untouchable asset that the Chicago Bulls have.

The Chicago Bulls just wrapped up their second straight losing season, but there were some highlights. Coby White just had a breakout season for the Bulls, finishing second in Most Improved Player voting. According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, White is Chicago’s most untouchable trade asset.

The 2023-24 NBA campaign was mostly a season to forget for the Bulls, but Coby White’s emergence ensured it wasn’t a total waste,” Buckley wrote. “The Most Improved Player award runner-up was no less than phenomenal during his fifth season. His stat sheet essentially featured one personal best after the next, including 19.1 points, 5.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 three-pointers. Speaking of that line, want to know how many players matched or exceeded those marks? Seven across the entire Association.”

“You could make the case that the 24-year-old is already the Bulls’ best player—especially with DeMar DeRozan entering free agency—and he’d certainly be front and center of a rebuild should the front office ever lean that direction. The list of players Chicago would give up White to get can’t be long, and it might be exclusively populated with names who won’t come anywhere near this summer’s trade block.”

White just re-signed with the Bulls last summer on a very team-friendly contract, and the 24-year-old looks to be a guy Chicago can build around.

Should the Chicago Bulls make Coby White untouchable in trade talks?

Should the Chicago Bulls make Coby White untouchable in trade talks this offseason?

The Chicago Bulls are going to be active this summer. At least, that’s what seems likely. Arturas Karnisovas has already admitted that the current core isn’t working, so bringing it back as is would be malpractice. Guys like Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso should be expected to be thrown around in trade talks.

But where does the front office draw the line in the sand? What happens with DeMar DeRozan? What about Nikola Vucevic? Does he get traded? At this point, it feels like everyone on the roster could be a trade candidate. But there’s one guy whose case to be untouchable is stronger than anyone else’s – Coby White.

The CHGO Sports YouTube channel recently discussed whether or not the Bulls should make White untouchable in trade talks this offseason.

White just wrapped up an incredible season that saw him finish second in Most Improved Player voting, and he’s still only 24 years old.

Could a Zach LaVine return hurt Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu?

Would Zach LaVine returning to the Chicago Bulls hurt the growth of Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu?

When Zach LaVine went down with a season-ending injury this season, it looked like the end of the road for the Chicago Bulls. Instead, Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu stepped into much larger roles, picked up the slack, and helped Chicago make the Play-In Tournament. Now, Sam Smith of NBA.com is pondering an important question: Could a LaVine return hurt White and Dosunmu’s development?

“In some respects, the Bulls look like they moved on with the development of Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu in LaVine’s absence,” Smith wrote. “Still, they finished the regular season with a poorer record than last season with LaVine missing half this season, and again failed to make the playoffs.

“Perhaps puncturing the notion the team is better off without LaVine. A salient question has been if LaVine returns whether it would set back the development of White and Dosunmu.”

It seems as though the Bulls are focused on finding a trade for LaVine, meaning White and Dosunmu would have plenty of room to continue growing.

How should we grade the seasons of Coby White, Jevon Carter, and Torrey Craig with the Chicago Bulls?

White perhaps out of all of them had the best individual season in terms of results and growth, but Craig and Carter had flashes as well.

How should we grade the seasons of Coby White, Jevon Carter, and Torrey Craig with the Chicago Bulls in 2023-24? The trio of Bulls players may not have collectively had the season with the Bulls we had hoped they would, but there are things to point to for all three among positives and negatives both.

White perhaps out of all of them had the best individual season in terms of results and growth, but Craig and Carter had flashes as well when healthy. To talk it over on a recent episode of their show, the hosts of the “Locked On Bulls” podcast, Haize and Pat the Designer, took some time to dive into their respective play in Chicago’s 2023-24 campaign.

They also compare the short-term future of the Bulls with the Chicago Sky.

Bulls’ Coby White snubbed for 2024 Most Improved Player award

White got just 32 first place votes to Tyrese Maxey’s 51, and trailed the Sixers star 319 to 305 in the overall vote tally.

One of the few bright spots for Chicago Bulls fans this season has been the play and growth of reserve guard Coby White. He made the most of a bad situation after he was thrust into a bigger role with injuries to Lonzo Ball and Zach LaVine opened up plenty of playing time for him.

And White ran with that opportunity, so much so that he found himself in the mix to win the 2024 Most Improved Player award. But he would ultimately not get the nod for that particular piece of full season hardware, it instead having gone to Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey.

White got just 32 first place votes to Maxey’s 51, and trailed the Sixers star 319 to 305 in the overall vote tally.

Was White snubbed despite having a comparable or superior season? Check out the clip embedded above to hear the thoughts of the folks behind the “Bulls Central” YouTube channel.

Coby White named a NBA Most Improved Player finalist

Former UNC basketball star Coby White was named one of three finalists for the NBA’s Most Improved Player (MIP) award.

Coby White’s season with the Chicago Bulls might’ve ended already, but that hasn’t stopped the former Tar Heel name from popping up in conversation as he was announced as one of the three finalists for the Most Improved Player (M.I.P) award.

White joins Alperen Sengun and Tyrese Maxey as the three finalists for the award. White got paid this off-season, signing a three-year, $36M contract that now seems like a steal of a deal. This season, White had career highs across the board, averaging 19.1 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds.

White had eight 30-point performances on the season, including a special 42-point night to beat the Atlanta Hawks in the Bulls NBA play-in game.

Of the three candidates, Maxey is the only one to make the All-Star game, but that doesn’t mean he made the bigger strides. White had the biggest increase in points (+9.4) and rebounds (+1.6). Sengun had a slight edge in assists (+2.7) over White’s (+2.3).

If White wins the award, he will become the first Tar Heel to do so. He will become the second Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) player since Brandon Ingram from Duke won the award in 2019.
