Cobra’s unique hiding place inspires warning: ‘Be extra careful’

A wildlife expert in India has asked residents to exercise caution after footage surfaced showing a cobra emerging from a woman’s shoe.

A wildlife expert in India has asked residents to exercise caution after footage surfaced showing a cobra emerging from what appears to be a woman’s shoe.

“Cobra trying a new footwear,” Susanta Nanda of the Indian Forest Service joked via X. “Jokes apart, as the monsoon is coming to a close, please be extra careful.”

In the footage posted below, the cobra reveals its hood in a defensive posture and strikes in the direction of the videographer.

Cobra encounters increase dramatically during India’s monsoon season, when more snakes slither into manmade structures while trying to escape flooding.

The highly venomous Indian cobra, which can measure to about 5 feet, is one of the most dangerous snakes in India.

Best affordable putters for 2023

Shave strokes off your score while keeping some extra cash in your wallet with our list of best affordable putters.

Your putter is the only club you use on every hole — unless you hole a chip or approach shot, and in that case, good for you. But because it’s used so much, the retail prices of premium flat sticks can be outrageously high. And since no one wants to pay an arm and a leg for a putter, many amateur golfers hold onto old putters for way too long.

Technology gets better over the years and modern putters are better designed to help the average golfer make more putts. If you’re still using a putter from 10, 20, or 30 years ago, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage.

So, we thought it’d be a good idea to put together a list of some of the best affordable putters we could find from brands like Ping, TaylorMade, Odyssey and more.

Every putter on this list is less than $200.

Best affordable drivers in 2023

Add some distance and save some $$$ with our list of best affordable drivers in 2023.

When big-name brands like TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway and Ping release new drivers, the prices can be astronomical. You could be a die-hard golfer playing 2-3 times a week, and it’d still be hard to justify spending that much money on a golf club.

So we thought it’d be a good idea to scour the internet for the best deals on name-brand drivers to save the average golfer some coin on their next big stick. Be sure to look out for deals on last year’s releases at major retailers like PGA TOUR Superstore, GlobalGolf, DICK’S Sporting Goods and more.

Close up golf equipment photos taken at the 2023 Tour Championship.

ATLANTA — What the season-ending Tour Championship lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Only the golfers who finished ranked in the top 30 on the FedEx Cup point list after last week’s BMW Championship earned a spot in this week’s event at the East Lake Golf Club. Several big-name players failed to qualify, but some fresh faces are primed to play in their first Tour Championship and make a run at the $18 million first prize.

Golfweek’s equipment guru David Dusek is on-site at East Lake and sent these photos from the practice area and driving range of some of the equipment he spotted.

Irons used by PGA Tour leaders in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green

Irons used by stars like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and more.

ATLANTA — Only the top 30 golfers on the FedEx Cup points list have earned spots in the field at this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, and one of the surest ways to have the consistency needed to finish that high in the standings is hit high-quality iron shots. A lot of them.

Distance off the tee can be a huge advantage, but when golfers’ approach shots stay out of trouble and finish near the hole, they avoid making big numbers and set up birdie chances. That translates to low scores and fat bank accounts.

The stat on the PGA Tour that reveals the best iron players is Strokes Gained: Approach the Green. It shows how much of an advantage a player has, measured in strokes, over other golfers based exclusively on the quality of his approach shots and tee shots on par 3s.

The PGA Tour’s regular season has now concluded, and the list below reveals the players who finished in the top 10 in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green, along with the irons they use.

Best cart bags for 2023

Ride in style with our list of best cart bags for 2023.

It’s the middle of summer, the temperatures are high and it’s tough to walk nine holes without feeling tired and run down. So, many golfers around the country are relying on golf carts to get them around their favorite track.

If you’re braving the high temperatures and walking most days, we have a list for you, too. Take a look at our best stand bags list we released last week.

Why do golfers add driving irons to their bags at British Opens?

Driving irons can be a smart club to use on links courses

Links golf courses like St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Royal St. Georges and Royal Liverpool, the site of this week’s Open Championship, are built on sandy, wind-spect ground that would not be good for agriculture or almost anything other than golf.

The sandy ground allows water to drain quickly, so the fairways tend to be firm and bouncy, and strategically-placed pot bunkers can be extremely challenging to play from, but the main defense for any true links course is wind. Elite golfers are not bothered by playing in rain because it tends to soften the course and make approach shots to the green stop quicker, but wind bedevils them. When it swirls, gusts and shifts, wind adds unpredictability to the game, and that drives control-hungry golfers crazy.

To battle the wind and take advantage of the firm fairway conditions, many golfers take out high-lofted fairway woods before the start of events like the Scottish Open and the British Open, then add a driving iron or two in their place.

Open Championship 2023Leaderboard, tee times, hole-by-hole

Modern fairway woods have a low center of gravity that is typically pulled back, away from the face, to encourage higher-flying shots that maximize carry distance. In windy conditions, hitting a 5-wood or a 7-wood low can be challenging. Even with the same amount of loft, driving irons have a higher center of gravity and it is positioned closer to the face, so they produce lower-flying shots that tend to roll out. Nearly all players also fit their driving irons with graphite shafts, typically designed for hybrids, so they can generate more speed and create the spin rate and launch angle they desire. As a result, fast-swinging golfers can use driving irons can keep the ball below the fiercest winds, adding control off the tee, without sacrificing too much distance.

The players listed below are some of the competitors trying to win the Claret Jug this week at Royal Liverpool who have added driving irons to their bag this week.

Check out rare photos of Rickie Fowler’s equipment through the years

From an equipment standpoint, Rickie Fowler has been one of the most interesting players for over a decade.

Rickie Fowler’s resurgence has produced some spectacularly-low rounds and put him in contention at several tournaments, including the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club after he shot an opening-round 62. He didn’t win at LACC, but bounced back a week later at TPC River Highlands by shooting a 60 on Saturday. On Sunday, competing in his sixth tournament in the last seven weeks, Fowler broke through and won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in a playoff over Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin.

From an equipment standpoint, Rickie Fowler has been one of the most interesting players on the PGA Tour for over a decade. After leaving Oklahoma State and turning pro, he continued to play Titleist gear. He then transitioned into Cobra equipment, which, along with Titleist and FootJoy, was a part of Acushnet Brands. However, in March of 2012, Acushnet sold Cobra to Puma and Fowler wound up becoming the flagship player for Cobra Puma Golf.

Over the years, Fowler has shifted from using classic muscleback blades into cavity-back irons, and his taste in putters has veered from heel-toe weighted blades into black-and-while mallets.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Connecticut has a reputation for being a quiet little part of the United States, but there were plenty of interesting things happening on the range before the start of the 2023 Travelers Championship. First, Collin Morikawa, Kurt Kitayama and several other TaylorMade staffers started testing the brand’s yet-to-be-released MG4 wedges. Then, Golfweek spotted a prototype Callaway Apex CB 4-iron in Adam Svensson’s bag on Tuesday evening. At the same time, several Titleist staffers are continuing the brand’s seeding process and testing the new T100, T150 and T200 irons.

Take a look at those clubs and many others spotted on the range and near the practice green at TPC River Highlands:
