Yeah, enough of that mess from the 1960s when Duke was ranked high enough to be in the top spot of the Coaches Poll of the decade, even though UCLA owns the NCAA Tournament. The 1970s were about the Bruins, at least for the first half of it.

Call it a make-good for the previous decade.

The Coaches Poll were still doing the final rankings at the end of the regular season and not after the NCAA Tournament.

Okay, so this is wrong. And there’s a reason.

Duke didn’t win any national titles in the 1960s, but it managed to be ranked at a higher level than UCLA … at the end of the regular season.

OF COURSE UCLA and its five NCAA titles was the college basketball program of the 1960s, but the Coaches Poll – like the AP version – didn’t rank teams after the NCAA Tournament. And why because it wasn’t the be-all-end-all dominant March Madness force like it is today.

Coaches Poll, College Basketball Rankings 1950s: What are the greatest college basketball programs of all-time based on the Coaches Poll final rankings?

Where did all the top college basketball teams rank in the final 1951 to 1959 top 25 Coaches Polls? Which programs made the cut and which ones just missed out, but received votes?

According to the final Coaches rankings, how do the programs rank all-time, by decade, and by era? Which ones were the best over the 1950s? The Coaches college basketball poll started at the end of the 1951 season, so the Coaches polls for the era are missing a few of the seasons the AP polls ranked.

Take all the Coaches final rankings and use our CFN scoring system – the Coaches final regular season No. 1 gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

Kentucky won three national championships from 1951 to 1959, and like it was in the AP version, it turned out to be the program of the decade with ease.

One key note: The Coaches final rankings came out at the end of the regular seasons, not after the NCAA Tournaments.

The AP rankings get more love, respect, and eyeballs than the Coaches Poll for both college football and college basketball, but …

At least lately, the Coaches Poll is a tad more representative for hoops.

The final AP college basketball rankings come before the NCAA Tournament. Ever since the 1991-1992 season, the Coaches Poll has released its final rankings after the NCAA Tournament – so it gets the national champion right.

Just like we do for the football rankings, take all the Coaches Poll final rankings and use our simple scoring system – the final Coaches Poll No. 1 in each season gets 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom.

Based on the final Coaches Poll college basketball rankings from the 1950-1951 season through to the end of the 2021-2022 regular season, who earned the most all-time recognition from the Coaches Poll voters?
