Duke basketball rises one spot in USA TODAY Sports coaches poll despite Kansas loss

The voters in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll didn’t punish the Duke Blue Devils for their 75-72 loss to No. 1 Kansas.

The Duke men’s basketball team lost its second game of the season last Tuesday, a 75-72 neutral-site loss to No. 1 Kansas, but coaches around the country didn’t seem particularly concerned with the performance.

The Blue Devils rose one spot to No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll on Monday, making them both the highest-ranked ACC team and the highest two-loss team in the standings.

The Jayhawks, still undefeated after they held off [autotag]Cooper Flagg[/autotag] and his teammates down the stretch, maintained their hold atop the board with 19 first-place votes. However, after wins over the Iowa State Cyclones and North Carolina Tar Heels in Maui, the Auburn Tigers earned 12 first-place votes to close ground on Kansas.

Auburn, of course, comes to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday for Duke’s fourth top-25 opponent in six games. The Blue Devils are 1-2 in ranked battles so far this season, but they’re 4-0 at home and haven’t won a game in Durham by fewer than 22 points.

The Tennessee Volunteers, Marquette Golden Eagles, and Iowa State Cyclones followed Auburn within the top five. The Tar Heels, with two losses in Maui to drop down to 4-3 for the year, nearly dropped from the rankings at No. 22.

Seven SEC teams remain ranked in US LBM Coaches Poll after week 14

Kentucky football lost their final game, but the SEC finished strong overall in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

It was another rough week for Kentucky football, as they closed out a disappointing season with a 41 – 14 loss to Louisville.

The rest of the SEC football teams, however, fared pretty well in rivalry week, and nearly every team that was ranked last week won, and remains ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll this week.

The Texas Longhorns lead the way once again for the SEC. They moved up to number two after beating Texas A&M, who fell out of the top 25. The Georgia Bulldogs jumped into the top five after a wild victory after eight overtimes.

UGA rises in US LBM Coaches Poll after wild rivalry week

Georgia football continues its rise in the Coaches Poll after narrow rivalry win over Georgia Tech

The Georgia Bulldogs are ranked No. 5 in the US LBM Coaches Poll after earning a miraculous win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in eight overtimes. Georgia’s win over Georgia Tech should help Georgia make the College Football Playoff regardless of their result in the SEC championship.

The 12-0 Oregon Ducks have all 53 first place votes and are ranked No. 1. The Ohio State Buckeyes dropped to No. 8 after being ranked No. 2. The Buckeyes fell 13-10 to the Michigan Wolverines in the biggest upset of the week.

The Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 2 after beating Texas A&M to advance to the SEC title game. Penn State checks in at No. 3 after beating Maryland. Notre Dame is ranked No. 4.

The Georgia Bulldogs would make the playoff as the No. 7 seed based on these rankings and would face the No. 10 seed Alabama Crimson Tide in a rematch in the first-round of the playoff. Of course, Georgia will end up ranked higher (No. 2 seed) or lower based on if they win the SEC championship.

The fourth edition of the playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday.

Clemson football falls in Week 14 US LBM Coaches Poll after massive South Carolina loss

Clemson drops after loss to South Carolina.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers have fallen in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll in Week 14 following the Tigers nearly season crushing rivalry loss to Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Cade Klubnik showcased his mobility and poise with 280 passing yards, 62 rushing yards, and two touchdowns but fell short late with a decisive interception. South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers delivered a game-winning 20-yard scramble touchdown with just over a minute remaining to the win. Sellers proved a dual-threat nightmare, rushing for 166 yards on 16 carries and adding 164 passing yards on 13-of-21 completions.

Next up for the Tigers is the ACC Championship, as Syracuse took care of business for the Tigers, picking up a massive upset win over Miami. Clemson’s College Football Playoff hopes hinged on a Syracuse win, and they delivered.

Alabama football rises in US LBM Coaches Poll after Rivalry Week madness, awaits CFP fate

Take a look at how far Alabama climbed in the final regular season US LBM Coaches Poll ahead of Championship Saturday next week in college football.

The Alabama Crimson Tide avoided the upset bug Saturday with a 28-14 win over the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl. It was more than some teams could say for their Rivalry Week showdowns.

Jalen Milroe was 18-of-24 passing for 256 yards and ran 17 times for 104 yards and three touchdowns as the Crimson Tide (9-3 overall, 5-3 SEC) made one last statement for the playoff committee before the final CFP rankings are released on Dec. 8.

In the meantime, Alabama rose two spots to No. 11 in the Week 14 US LBM Coaches Poll, released Sunday. The Crimson Tide will have to see what happens on Championship Saturday next week to learn of their ultimate College Football Playoff fate the following Sunday.

Alabama had some help in moving up the Coaches Poll this week. The second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2) lost as heavy favorites to the rival Michigan Wolverines (7-5) in Columbus in a game that featured a wild melee on the field afterwards. Elsewhere, the Miami Hurricanes (10-2) blew a 21-point lead at Syracuse (9-3) and fell 42-38 in what might be a devastating blow to their CFP hopes.

Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers (9-3) lost their third game of 2024, 17-14 to rival South Carolina, yet will still play for the ACC title with a berth in the playoff on the line next week on Championship Saturday thanks to Miami’s loss at Syracuse.

Ohio State, Miami and Clemson all fell several spots in this week’s poll. The Buckeyes fell six spots to No. 8, while Alabama jumped past Miami, which fell to No. 14, and Clemson (down to No. 17).

For the seventh straight week, the Oregon Ducks (12-0) stayed at No. 1 after capping an unbeaten regular season with a 49-21 blowout win over the Washington Huskies in Eugene. The Texas Longhorns (11-1) rose to No. 2 and will play the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (10-2) for the SEC championship Saturday in Atlanta.

Penn State (11-1) moved up to No. 3 after a 44-7 blowout win over Maryland to close the regular season, and Notre Dame (11-1) moved up to No. 4 after a 49-35 win at rival Southern California (6-6). With Ohio State losing, Penn State will now play Oregon for the Big Ten championship next Saturday in Indianapolis.

Tennessee (10-2) and SMU (11-1) both rose one spot to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. Indiana (11-1) moved up one spot to No. 9, and No. 10 Boise State (11-1) rounded out the top 10.

Alabama remained the highest-ranked three-loss team, with South Carolina (9-3) one spot below the Crimson Tide at No. 12.

Duke women’s basketball moves up to 13th in USA TODAY Sports coaches poll

The Duke Blue Devils moved up one spot to 13th in the USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll.

The Duke women’s basketball team took down yet another ranked opponent on Monday afternoon, a 73-62 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats powered by a 30-point performance from Ashlon Jackson.

As a result, the Blue Devils moved up one spot to 13th in the updated USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll on Tuesday.

Among the other ACC teams, only the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 3) finished higher than Duke in the new rankings. The Blue Devils remained one spot above the North Carolina Tar Heels, who also moved up one place to 14th, but Kansas State somehow remained above Duke at 12th.

With the South Carolina Gamecocks losing their first game since the 2022-23 season, the Connecticut Huskies moved up to the top overall spot. The Gamecocks slipped down to fifth with the UCLA Bruins, Fighting Irish, and Texas Longhorns above them.

Duke plays the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners in the Ball Dawgs Classic title game on Wednesday, and the Blue Devils travel to South Carolina for a December 5 game against the Gamecocks.

Kentucky moves into the top ten in the new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Kentucky basketball is up to number eight in the new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Kentucky basketball has used a 5 – 0 start to the season to springboard up in the various top 25 rankings. Last week, the Wildcats faced two weaker teams, but dominated the Lipscomb Bisons and the Jackson State Tigers, and now are inside the top ten in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The Cats come in ranked eighth after the two wins, which is three spots higher than last week. They received no first place votes, but will face some stiffer competition in the coming weeks.

Kentucky faces Western Kentucky on Tuesday, then Georgia State to close out November. December’s schedule includes the Clemson Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Gonzaga.

Alabama falls in Coaches Poll despite impressive Top 25 win

The 31 coaches who make up the Coaches Poll dropped Alabama in the rankings despite the Crimson Tide’s impressive win over Illinois.

Despite an impressive victory over a ranked Big Ten school last Wednesday, Nate Oats’ Alabama basketball team fell in this week’s USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Alabama (4-1 overall) fell two spots to No. 9 after beating previously 20th-ranked Illinois, 100-87, in the C.M. Newton Classic at Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Grant Nelson scored 23 points to lead the Tide past the Illini. Auburn transfer Aden Holloway poured in 18.

Rick Barnes’ Tennessee Volunteers (6-0) and Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats (5-0) both jumped Alabama in the top 10, as did Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars (3-1), who play the Crimson Tide in this week’s Players Era Festival out in Las Vegas Tuesday.

Tipoff for Alabama vs. Houston is 7 p.m. CT Tuesday. The game will be televised on TBS. The Players Era Festival is a first of its kind — a glorified cash scramble by participating schools for various NIL war funds ($9 million total, according to various reports).

ESPN’s Matchup Predictor currently gives Houston a 71.9 percent chance of beating Alabama.

The top five of the new Coaches Poll remained the same. Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks (5-0) stayed at No. 1 with two-time defending national champion UConn at No. 2. Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers were No. 3. Gonzaga (No. 4) and Iowa State (No. 5) rounded out the top five.

Tennessee rose to No. 6 with Houston at No. 7 and Kentucky at No. 8. Alabama ranked one spot ahead of the Duke Blue Devils and freshman sensation Cooper Flagg.

Duke basketball sticks within the top 10 of the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll

Despite a big road victory over the Arizona Wildcats on Friday, the Blue Devils didn’t move in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll.

The Duke Blue Devils notched their first top-25 win of the season on Friday, a 69-55 victory over Caleb Love and the Arizona Wildcats, but they’ll need more to shift back toward the top of the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Duke remained 10th in the updated rankings released on Monday, still the highest-ranked ACC team in the standings. While the Purdue Boilermakers tumbled underneath them after a loss to Marquette, the Kentucky Wildcats vaulted over them to No. 8.

The Kansas Jayhawks, the next opponent on the Blue Devils’ schedule, held onto the No. 1 spot for the fourth straight week. Legendary head coach Bill Self and his team received 25 of a possible 31 first-place votes. The Connecticut Huskies, Auburn Tigers (another of Duke’s non-conference opponents), Gonzaga Bulldogs, and Iowa State Cyclones all remained unmoved in the top five.

The North Carolina Tar Heels slipped one spot to 13th, and the Arizona Wildcats dropped down to 23rd with their second loss of the year.

Multiple SEC teams fall in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll after a wild weekend

After 13 weeks, SEC football has eight teams ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Week thirteen was an interesting one for all of college football. There were a number of upsets of top ten teams, including a couple of SEC football teams. Kentucky football lost to the top SEC team, the Texas Longhorns, who maintained their spot at number three in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll.

Overall, the SEC has eight teams ranked in the top 25. Three of them remain inside the top ten. The Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers, at number six and eight respectively, join Texas with that distinction.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels both suffered losses on Saturday and dropped in the rankings. Bama fell six spots to number 13 while Ole Miss fell seven spots to number 16. Both likely saw their playoff hopes end as well.

The season is winding down, and there is just one game left in the regular season. It has been a wild season in the SEC, and the last week should be no exception.
