Chiefs announce high school Coach of the Week awards

Check out who won the #Chiefs’ latest high school Coach of the Week awards.

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their High School Coaches of the Week for the fifth week of the 2024 season. Head coach Jed Paulson of Blue Springs High School and head coach Rod Stallbaumer of Basehor-Linwood High School are the two latest winners of the prestigious award.

This recognition comes from a partnership between the Chiefs and the high school football media organization PrepsKC, which covers the Kansas City metro area.

Blue Springs High School stood out this week for defeating Rockhurst High School 30-13 for their first win against the Hawklets since 2019. This victory for the Wildcats earned Paulson the Head Coach of the Week award for Week 5.

Speaking about the recognition after the win, Coach Paulson said:

“This award is a representation of the hard work from our players, parents and staff over the past three years. The buzz surrounding the Wildcat football program comes from years of building the culture the right way.”

The other award winner for Week 5, Stallbaumer of the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats, is currently coaching the 5-0 for their season after defeating Topeka West High School 59-6.

In his comments from the Chiefs’ official media release about the award, Stallbaumer said:

“This award is a reflection of the hard work of our student athletes, the dedication of our assistant coaches and the support of our parents and community – all three factors are paramount to a successful football program” Head coach Stallbaumer shared after receiving the award.

Winning a Head Coach of the Week award gets the school a $500 Hunt Family Foundation grant. The coach receives a pair of Oakley sunglasses, a certificate of recognition, and qualification for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award which will be selected later this fall.

Brian Kelly named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after win over Ole Miss

Kelly earned a signature win over the Rebels on Saturday.

LSU football coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] earned his biggest win on the Bayou yet Saturday when his Tigers took down No. 7 Ole Miss. That win ended the Rebels undefeated start to the season and puts LSU in the driver’s seat in the SEC West, at least until it faces Alabama in two weeks.

After the massive win, Kelly brought home an honorific as he was named The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after guiding LSU to a 6-2 (4-1 SEC) start to his first season.

Per the official release, “The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.”

“This was a signature win for Coach Kelly and LSU football in his first season with the Tigers,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Coach Dodd would tell you a win like this is a culmination of months of preparation, and a commitment to excellence on both sides of the ball.”

LSU is off to a fantastic start in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, and this will likely not be the last award like this Kelly receives if his team continues to perform the way it has the past two weeks.

Kirk Herbstreit shows Notre Dame coach some love

Who has had a better 2021 season: Tommy Rees or Marcus Freeman? And share with us why…

The word “interesting” can barely describe what the experience of watching Notre Dame’s offense has been like through the first seven games of 2021.  With an almost entirely reworked offensive line, a new quarterback, a second new quarterback, a third new quarterback, back to the second and first quarterbacks again, and new receivers have meant for growing pains.

With all of that said it’s easy to see why Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has had his hands full this year.  At times I’ve thought he’s done a magnificent job getting what he has from a flawed group.  At others, like the play-calling immediately following Bo Bauer’s interception against USC, he leaves you flustered.

But how much of the blame can really go on him when he’s been dealt a far from ideal hand?

Rees grabbed the attention of ESPN’s most notable college football analyst over the weekend for the job he did against USC, even with that mishap I mentioned above.

Kirk Herbstreit named his top coaching performances of the college football weekend and Rees checked in seventh.

The interesting part to me is that looking at stats, Notre Dame was outgained by nearly 50 yards and secured just one more first down than USC on the night.  The Bauer interception changed the complete dynamic of that game and made life easier on the Notre Dame offense.

With that said, Rees handled the difficult quarterback situation about as well as he could as Jack Coan played his best game since the opener and Tyler Buchner shined when given the opportunity.
