Halftime Report: Clemson- 20, Wake Forest- 14

Clemson held the 20-14 lead at the half over Wake Forest, but not without encountering some attrition along the way.

At the half, Clemson has the six point edge over Wake Forest, but not without some attrition along the way.

Though the Tigers got on the board early with two back-to-back touchdown drives by quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, the Demon Deacons came up with their answer in the form of two Jahmal Banks touchdown receptions for a combined 41 yards.

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei remained perfect in completions through the first quarter, but struggled to connect with his receivers downfield into the second. Uiagalelei finished off the half completing 14-of-22 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

The starter connected with eight different receivers including freshman Antonio Williams who led the way with three receptions for 51 yards. On the ground, running back Will Shipley led the way for the Tigers with 66 yards while reaching a huge career milestone of 1,000 career rushing yards.

On the defensive side, the Tigers came into todays matchup missing a few key players both on the front lines and in the backfield. Clemson was without key defenders in Sheridan Jones, Malcolm Greene, Xavier Thomas and Andrew Mukuba and that certainly showed in the 147 yards of offense put up by the Demon Deacons so far.

Here’s a look at how Twitter reacted to the first half of the Clemson-Louisiana Tech game:

Clemson takes halftime lead at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — After taking a 14-0 lead and having Wake Forest on the ropes early, Clemson headed into halftime at Truist Field with a 20-14 lead.

Wake Forest exploited Clemson’s shorthanded secondary for the most part, as Clemson had three first-half pass interference penalties in the game’s first 30 minutes.

Still, Clemson outgained Wake Forest 309-129, was able to run the ball at will and recorded 15 first downs compared to Wake’s nine.

On Clemson’s first offensive play from scrimmage, Will Shipley scampered right up the middle for a 53-yard gain. Aided by a pass interference call on third-and-14, Clemson’s first offensive drive culminated in a 12-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Uiagalelei to Jake Briningstool.

That connection with Briningstool continued on Clemson’s second drive, which helped the Tigers reach the other side of the 50, before Uiagalelei connected with Brannon Spector for a 41-yard touchdown pass. Clemson’s second score of the game was Spector’s first of the season and the longest catch of his career.

Briningstool had three catches for 50 yards with a touchdown in the first half.

On the ensuing drive, Clemson was flagged twice for pass interference penalties before Sam Hartman found Jahmal Banks for a 36-yard touchdown, beating Fred Davis II in coverage in the process. While Wake Forest was able to get on the board, the Demon Deacons had four offensive possessions in the first quarter and punted four times.

After scoring on its first two offensive possessions, Clemson looked as if it was going to have to punt for a third straight drive. That was until Uiagalelei put the ball right in the bucket for true freshman Antonio Williams, who hauled in a 39-yard reception on third down.

Clemson’s third scoring drive was capped off by a 24-yard field goal made by B.T. Potter. He would later make another from 38-yards out to give Clemson a six-point lead heading into the break.

In the first half, Clemson committed seven penalties for 85 yards, which included a personal foul on Toriano Pride, Jr. While the true freshman cornerback was originally called for targeting, the ejection was overturned after review. That didn’t stop Hartman and Co. from picking on Pride, who gave up back-to-back completions to Banks, including a five-yard touchdown reception, his second of the game and the half.

Hartman finished the first half completing 9-of-15 passes for 115 yards with two touchdowns, while the run game was ineffective. Wake recorded 10 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Uiagaglelei completed 14-of-22 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Clemson also recorded 117 yards on the ground on 25 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per carry in the first half.

Clemson will receive the second-half kickoff.

Potter extends Clemson’s lead 17-7

BT Potter extends Clemson’s lead.

Clemson’s offense put together a solid drive that went 10-plays for 58-yards that was capped off by a 24-yard BT Potter field goal.

Will Shipley was absent from the drive picking up some rest as Phil Mafah handled the entire workload on this scoring drive. The Tigers struggled to get much going on the ground without Shipley on the field.

Freshman wide receiver Antonio Williams came up big for his quarterback DJ Uiagalelei bringing in a 39-yard deep ball on the sideline that DJ perfectly placed. Clemson couldn’t finish things in the red zone, which led to Potter’s 24-yard field goal.

Spector gives Clemson 14-0 lead with 41-yard grab

DJ Uiagalelei connects with Brannon Spector for a clutch 41-yard grab to give Clemson the 14-0 lead through one.

Clemson extended its lead yet again early in the first quarter thanks to a clutch 41-yard grab by wide receiver Brannon Spector.

The Tigers began the drive with two nice back-to-back passes to Joseph Ngata and Davis Allen for a combined 13 yards followed by Phil Mafah’s six yard run and Uiagalelei’s second connection of the game with tight end Jake Bringingstool for 30 yards. Spector’s 41-yard catch came shortly after, good for Clemson’s second touchdown of the day.

In total, the second touchdown drive of the day consisted of five plays for 75 yards in 2:06.

Through two drives, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has been just about perfect, throwing 7-for-7 for 104 yards and two touchdowns in just the first quarter of play.

Briningstool puts Clemson up 7-0 early

DJ Uiagalelei’s red zone dime puts Clemson up 7-0.

DJ Uiagalelei and the Clemson offense started out red hot against Wake Forest, driving downfield on eight plays for 88-yards that was capped off by a Jake Briningstool 12-yard touchdown reception.

The Tigers’ offense did exactly what they needed to early; get Will Shipley the ball. On the drive’s first play, Shipley burst up the middle for a 53-yard gain. He hit the whole and didn’t look back.

A pass interference call kept the Clemson drive alive as DJ Uiagalelei tested the Demon Deacons downfield on a deep ball to Joseph Ngata. Uiagalelei was patient and poised in the pocket, with the offensive line giving him some great protection to find Briningstool in the back of the end zone.

The Tigers now lead 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Lee Corso: “Clemson is overrated”

Clemson is overrated, according to College GameDay analyst Lee Corso.

ESPN College GameDay analyst Lee Corso is expecting Dabo Swinney’s Tigers to lose to Wake Forest today, breaking their 13-game losing streak against the Tigers today.

Some analysts believe in this Clemson team though it seems as if Corso isn’t one of those people, calling this Tigers team overrated repeatedly.

“Clemson is overrated. Clemson’s overrated,” Corso said. “Clemson better be alert for Wake. Wake has lost 13 straight to the Tigers, but this could be the year they win. Why? Because Wake has got an offense that can outscore the Tigers. They’re at home; they’ve won 11 straight games. So, it makes sense to me. Wake Forest upsets No. 5 Clemson today. Clemson’s overrated.”

This matchup with No.21 Wake Forest is a big opportunity for Swinney and the No.5 Tigers to make a statement and quiet the critics with a big performance.

No.5 Clemson’s away game against No.21 Wake Forest will begin at noon today at Truist Field in Winston-Salem (N.C.).

Clemson vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

The defense has been suffocating.

Louisiana Tech kept throwing in the 48-20 loss to the Tigers, but that didn’t matter – 14 points came late when the game was well out of reach.

Star DT Bryan Bresee is back on campus after being out last week following the tragic loss of his sister, the run defense is allowing just 2.4 yards per carry, and the takeaways are flowing.

No, the Tigers haven’t faced an offense like Wake Forest will bring, but the pass rush that hasn’t needed to turn it loose is about to step up, the secondary should be able to hold up, and there’s no fear of stopping the run.

The Demon Deacons will give it a shot, but the ground attack won’t go anywhere. Fortunately for them …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Sam Hartman stepped back in and rocked without skipping a beat.

He missed the opener against VMI as he worked to get past a blood clotting problem, and then hit Vanderbilt and Liberty for 625 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Demon Deacon offense will push a Clemson defense that hasn’t seen anything like this so far, but it’ll be the other side of the ball that has to step up.

Clemson’s O has put up points, but it’s been a grind to get there. There’s no appreciable downfield passing game, the running game was just okay until last week, and if it’s possible to score 124 points in three games and be underwhelming, this team has done it.

Hartman and the Demon Deacon offense has to crank up the pressure. Clemson hasn’t needed to come up with a drive that matters so far this year, but …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Clemson vs Wake Forest. Clemson has won 13 straight in the series and 15 of the last 17. It’s going to take something amazing for Wake Forest to pull this off.

The Clemson defense is about to turn it up a few notches. As is it’s fantastic, but it hasn’t done much to get to the quarterback – that’s about to change.

The offense that found a nice balance over the last two games will pound away, it won’t turn the ball over like the Demon Deacons need – they’ve come up with seven takeaways over the last two games – and after a fun and wild first part of the game, things will settle in.

The Clemson defense will settle in.

5 reasons Clemson gets the win over Wake Forest

5 reasons why the Tigers should handle business against Wake Forest

Dabo Swinney and Clemson take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at 12 p.m. at Truist Field in Winston-Salem (N.C.) this Saturday.

The No.5 Tigers are coming off a 48-20 Week 3 win over Louisiana Tech in a game where Clemson looked solid though fans and analysts expect more out of Swinney’s team. An away matchup with Dave Clawson’s No.16 Wake Forest is a huge test and opportunity for this Clemson team to make a statement on the road.

Clemson has dominated this matchup since Dabo Swinney’s first full season as head coach back in 2009. Since then, Swinney and the Tigers haven’t lost with a 13-0 record against the Demon Deacons in the Swinney era. Their last loss to Wake Forest back in 2008 directly resulted in the promotion of Swinney from wide receiver coach to interim head coach, and we all know how things turned out from there.

(Watch and stream the game live on ESPN+)

Will Swinney and the Tigers extend their win streak to 14-games against the Demon Deacons? It is an excellent opportunity for this Clemson team, and they have the tools to do it.

Here are five reasons why Clemson will walk away with a win in their away game against Wake Forest:

Notes:

There is unsurprisingly a stark contrast in the talent of Clemson and Wake Forest’s projected starters, at least on paper, with the Demon Deacons only having a pair of former four-star prospects and no former five-stars as opposed to the Tigers’ 14 former four-star prospects and seven former five-stars. Wake Forest has one former top-275 national recruit in wide receiver Donavon Greene while only one other projected Demon Deacon starter was a top-400 national recruit (safety Brendon Harris, No. 371 national).

Most of Wake’s projected starters were ranked outside of the top 1,000 players in the country as recruits. Clemson, meanwhile, has 13 former top-100 national prospects and six former top-150 national recruits among its projected starters
