Will Shipley leads Clemson to a comeback win over Syracuse

Freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik took over as Clemson made a comeback win over Syracuse.

It was a wild one in Death Valley Saturday as No.5 Clemson, behind a strong effort by Will Shipley, made a 27-21 comeback win over Dino Babers No.14 Syracuse.

The Tigers came out the gates strong, with DJ Uiagalelei finding Davis Allen for a 41-yard connection down the middle on their first offensive play of the game, helping set up a Will Shipley touchdown. After this, things slowed down mightily for the Tigers’ offense, leading to Cade Klubnik stepping in for Uiagalelei late in the third quarter as Swinney looked to turn things around.

Down 11 points heading into the fourth quarter, Clemson starting running back Will Shipley put the team on his back. Shipley took a carry 50-yards for a game-winning touchdown that put the Tigers up 24-21. The stud running back took 27 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns on the day.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers had their struggles in the first half, though they didn’t give up. The defense showed up massively in the second half, shutting out Garrett Shrader and the Syracuse offense. Holding Syracuse scoreless in the second half was crucial to the Tigers avoiding an upset.

R.J. Mickens had an interception on the Orange’s final drive to secure a Clemson win.

It was a massive comeback win for Swinney and the Tigers as they head into their bye week with their college football playoff hopes alive.

Tigers turn to Klubnik late to win top 15 thriller over Syracuse

After trailing by double digits at the half, No. 5 Clemson decided to turn to true freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik late in the third quarter, a decision which proved to be just what the Tigers needed to spark the 27-21 comeback victory.

Klubnik led the Tigers to the end zone two times in his first two drives at the helm, which gave Clemson the lead for good, knocking off an undefeated Syracuse to remain perfect at home for 38-straight games. With their latest win, the Tigers take ownership of the ACC’s longest home winning streak, surpassing Florida State who held the 37-game streak from 1997-2001.

In the first half of play, the Tigers were able to get on the board first with a big first drive that resulted in a Will Shipley trip to the end zone and while Clemson’s run game exploded at moments, the two costly turnovers seemed to lead the Tigers down a path of no return.

The turnover issue continued to plague quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei into the second half, giving up his second interception of the day along with a fumble to turn the ball over in back-to-back drives once again.

With Uiagalelei continually getting burned at the helm for the Tigers, Clemson turned to backup Cade Klubnik late in the third quarter. In his first drive of the game, Klubnik led the Tigers back to the end zone for just the second time thanks to Phil Mafah’s one yard rushing touchdown, cutting Syracuse’s lead to five early in the fourth.

Wes Goodwin’s defense had a huge drive directly after the score, holding quarterback Garrett Shrader and the rest of Syracuse’s offense to just 25 yards with the Tigers bringing the pressure upfront.

Klubnik proved to be just what the doctor ordered for Clemson’s offense, who took back the lead later in the fourth quarter thanks to a clutch 50-yard rush up the middle by Will Shipley for his second rushing touchdown of the day, along with a successful two-point conversion.

After taking the 24-21 lead midway through the fourth, Clemson’s defense seemed to come alive, keeping Syracuse at bay with the three-and-out on the following two drives and holding the Orange to just two first downs while forcing six punts in just the second half alone.

Kicker B.T. Potter extended the Tigers lead with just under two minutes remaining with a 44-yard field goal for a final score of 27-21. With just under a minute to go, safety R.J. Mickens came up with the big interception, Shrader’s first, to seal Clemson’s fate in Saturday’s win over the Orange.

With the win, Clemson remains a perfect 8-0 (6-0 ACC) while knocking off its fifth undefeated opponent of the season. The Tigers extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 14 games and are still in the hunt for their sixth playoff appearance since 2016.

Following the bye week next week, Clemson travels to Notre Dame on Saturday, November 5, for its final road matchup of the regular season at Notre Dame Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on NBC.

Shipley breaks off a monster run to give Clemson the lead

Shipley comes up big for the Tigers.

Will Shipley just came up big for the Clemson offense.

With true freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik under center, starting running back, Will Shipley took a carry 50-yards on a beautiful run to put the Tigers up 24-21 in the fourth quarter. It was just a two-play 61-yard drive for the Tigers that opened with a Klubnik 11-yard run before Shipley broke one off.

Shipley has been the most productive player in this Clemson offense this season, and when the team needed him most, he showed up. It was a beautiful run from the sophomore who is proving to be one of the best running backs in the country this season.

Phil Mafah cuts Syracuse’s lead

Mafah helps shrink Syracuse’s lead.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers cut the Orange’s lead in the fourth quarter as Phil Mafah took a 1-yard carry on fourth down into the end zone to put the Tigers down 21-16.

After a rough game for starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, true freshman Cade Klubnik took over and brought some new energy to the Tigers’ offense. It was a 15-play 80-yard drive for the Tigers, with multiple fouls on the Orange helping Clemson make their way into scoring position.

The Tigers failed to convert on the 2-point conversion keeping them from needing just a field goal to tie things up. Regardless, it was a huge momentum swing for this Clemson offense.

Halftime report: Clemson is on upset alert against Syracuse

Clemson trails Syracuse heading into the locker room.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers are on upset alert right now as Clemson heads into the locker room trailing Syracuse 21-10 at the half.

The game seems to be more about Clemson beating themselves than Syracuse beating them, as the Tigers are arguably playing the worst football we’ve seen from them this season. Starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei may have come out the gates looking great on the first drive, but the junior has cooled down substantially since then.

Uiagalelei has completed 12-18 passes for 138 yards, with a crucial interception on the doorstep of the red zone and a fumble at Syracuse’s five-yard line that was scooped up for a 90-yard fumble return touchdown. It was a rough first half for the Tigers’ offense.

Clemson has looked exposable on nearly every Syracuse possession as Garrett Shrader and the Orange offense has been consistent when given opportunities. They haven’t beaten Clemson’s defense, but they have done an excellent job of scoring points.

Swinney and the Tigers will need to show up in the second half if they don’t want to be upset.

Turnovers prove costly as Clemson trails at the half

Clemson’s run game sat center stage in the first half of Saturday’s top 25 matchup versus Syracuse at Memorial Stadium, but the real difference maker proved to be two costly Tiger turnovers in back-to-back drives that led to Clemson’s 21-10 deficit at the half.

Syracuse kicked things off in the first half and seemingly opened up the run game early in the first drive of the day. Quarterback Garrett Shrader was able to record 28 yards rushing with three carries, but the Tigers showed up with two big defensive stops by Justin Mascoll and Ruke Orhorhoro to keep the Orange off the scoreboard.

In Clemson’s first drive of the game, quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei started things off with a bang, connecting with tight end Davis Allen for 41 yards. Will Shipley quickly followed suit, putting together two big runs for 14 yards. Shipley later ran it in on the 2nd and 1 to give Clemson the early 7-0 lead.

Despite a huge first offensive drive for the Tigers, Syracuse quickly came up with its answer. Shrader continued to be an issue for Clemson’s defense, who gave up its first touchdown drive of the day following a Shrader-Tucker connection for 12 yards to tie it up 7-7.

The Tiger’s running back core continued to wreck havoc through the first quarter, but Syracuse defender Ja’Had Carter got his hands on a Uiagalelei pass to hand the starter his third interception of the season. Despite the turnover, Tyler Davis and Orhorhoro came up big once again to force the fourth down at the start of the second quarter.

Turnovers continued to be costly for Clemson’s offense and Uiagalelei, who fumbled the ball in the red zone, allowing Ja’Had Carter to pick up his second recovery of the day, a 90-yard pick-6, to give Syracuse its first lead of the day.

A failed Clemson fourth down conversion led to Syracuse’s third trip of the half to the end zone thanks to Shrader’s rushing touchdown for seven yards, but Clemson’s B.T. Potter was able to send a 44-yard field goal sailing through the uprights to cut the Tigers deficit to ten at the half.

Clemson will receive the second half-kick off.

A Palmetto State quarterback will be making the trip up from the lower part of the state to visit Clemson for its latest top 25 matchup versus Syracuse in Death Valley this weekend.

2026 standout quarterback Josiah Oxendine, who hails from Dillon High School in Dillon (SC), confirmed that he would be among the many recruits in attendance for the Tiger’s homecoming matchup on Saturday.

Oxendine spoke with The Clemson Insider prior to his visit this weekend and shared his thoughts on what sets Clemson’s program apart from the rest.

“The tradition Coach Swinney has built does not go unnoticed,” Oxendine told The Clemson Insider. “The fan base is passionate, too. But for me it’s the platform to compete at the highest level of college football. I want that opportunity.”

Clemson’s winning tradition coupled with the high level of competition present within the program is what continues to draw the South Carolina native’s gaze back to the Tigers, an experience Oxendine hopes to get a glimpse of when he steps foot in Death Valley this weekend.

“I am looking forward to meeting some of the coaches and watching the QBs go through their pregame process and perform at the highest level,” Oxendine said. “Also, I’m looking forward to enjoying the overall atmosphere of game day at Clemson.”

The 6-foot, 175-pound freshman has already garnered offers from Akron, Georgia State, Marshall and Pittsburgh this fall and hopes to make solid connections with the Tigers coaching staff this weekend.

“Coach Thomas Austin was at our game last Friday night at Dillon High School,” Oxendine told TCI. “I may get a chance to connect with him, but not sure. But definitely would like to connect with Coach Streeter and any other members of the coaching staff/recruiting department.”

Five Clemson players to keep an eye on vs. Syracuse

Ahead of Clemson’s Top 15 matchup with Syracuse on Saturday, here are five Clemson players fans should watch closely.

No. 5 Clemson has yet another Top 15 matchup on its hands on Saturday, and this time it’s against No. 14 Syracuse.

Coming off a six-point victory over Florida State last week, the Tigers enter Week 7 atop the ACC Atlantic Divison with a perfect 7-0 record on the 2022 season.

The Orange are right behind the Tigers, however, as they are also undefeated on the year with a 6-0 record.

Although Death Valley has hosted some incredible games through the years, Saturday’s noon kickoff between these two teams will be the first time that two 6-0 or better ACC teams have faced off in Memorial Stadium.

With such high stakes, both teams will be hungry for a victory, and for the Tigers, a win will give them a gigantic leg up on the rest of the Atlantic Divison.

That said, here are five Tigers fans should watch closely during Saturday’s game.
