Keys for Notre Dame to upset Clemson

Lots of keys for the Irish in this battle

More keys? You bet there are as this game isn’t just going to hinge on a few moments for the Irish. Clemson is that older brother that you try and try to beat, with a win here and there. The Irish split their series in the COVID season of 2020, with the Tigers winning the ACC crown as their prize. Another undefeated Clemson team will return to South Bend, but this time a few different cast members are leading this charge. Find out more keys (if you haven’t check out John Kennedy’s keys, read them here) to the Irish pulling off another upset this fall.

Five Clemson players to keep an eye on vs. Syracuse

Ahead of Clemson’s Top 15 matchup with Syracuse on Saturday, here are five Clemson players fans should watch closely.

No. 5 Clemson has yet another Top 15 matchup on its hands on Saturday, and this time it’s against No. 14 Syracuse.

Coming off a six-point victory over Florida State last week, the Tigers enter Week 7 atop the ACC Atlantic Divison with a perfect 7-0 record on the 2022 season.

The Orange are right behind the Tigers, however, as they are also undefeated on the year with a 6-0 record.

Although Death Valley has hosted some incredible games through the years, Saturday’s noon kickoff between these two teams will be the first time that two 6-0 or better ACC teams have faced off in Memorial Stadium.

With such high stakes, both teams will be hungry for a victory, and for the Tigers, a win will give them a gigantic leg up on the rest of the Atlantic Divison.

That said, here are five Tigers fans should watch closely during Saturday’s game.

Five Clemson players to keep an eye on against Florida State

Here are five Tigers that fans should watch carefully during Clemson’s game with Florida State on Saturday.

No. 4 Clemson takes on Florida State on Saturday, and multiple Tigers will be under the spotlight when the two teams kick off at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Heading into Week 7, Clemson (6-0) leads the pack in the Atlantic Divison, with Florida State (4-2) not too far behind.

The Tigers have won the past six matchups, but winning this road game in Tallahassee, Fla., will be no easy task.

Last year, Clemson defeated the Seminoles by 10 points — a score that was not reflective of how poor head coach Dabo Swinney thought his team played.

“I wanted to vomit watching the Florida State game last year,” Swinney said on Tuesday. “It was so painful to watch it. We were so bad. We won, which was a miracle, but we were so bad.”

Swinney and the Tigers will look to rectify that performance on Saturday, and here are some Clemson players to keep a closer eye on during the game.

A look at how Brent Venables defensive recruiting stacks up vs. team recruiting rankings over the last decade

A look at how Brent Venables defensive recruiting classes stack up nationally by average composite rating for the last decade.

A lot has been made of the Oklahoma Sooners’ current ranking in the 2023 cycle. They’re currently No. 35 in the team recruiting rankings over at 247Sports after picking up a commitment from linebacker Phil Picciotti on the Fourth of July.

We’ve preached patience as recruiting classes aren’t built in June or July, and the Oklahoma Sooners and the rest of the country are still eight months away from national signing day. Recall that Brent Venables needed two months on the job at OU to take the Sooners recruiting class from No. 28 in the country after Lincoln Riley left to a class that finished No. 8 in the country for the 2022 cycle.

That’s pretty good. Now imagine what he’ll be able to accomplish with a full year to recruit for the 2023 class.

With Venables, the Sooners recruiting classes will be more marathon vs. sprint in the race for the nation’s top recruits. The Sooners would prefer their players not to visit other teams after they commit, so players trending to Oklahoma will not likely commit until they’ve gone through their entire process. This means the Sooners may not do well in May or June of a recruiting cycle, but July and August should be fruitful months full of commitments to Oklahoma.

However, there’s been some question about how well Venables can recruit. So, I took a look back at the last decade, predominantly from his time at Clemson to see how well he performed relative to the rest of the country. Taking the average score for the commits on the defensive side of the ball for each class over the last decade, we compared that average rating with the average team score for the rest of the country to see how they compared.

If Clemson’s recruiting class in 2018, 2020, or 2021 had been strictly defensive players, the Tigers would have finished with the highest average among their commitments. Those classes were all top 10, but team recruiting rankings are based on a total score, not an average, so they finished seventh, third, and fifth instead of No. 1.

Here is a synopsis of what we’re looking at here.

  • The comparison is Brent Venables defensive recruiting classes on average using the 247Sports composite rating for each player in the class and comparing that to the team recruiting rankings from 247Sports.
  • Removed Clemson’s 2012 recruiting class as Venables was just getting started with the Tigers.
  • I allowed Venables to get partial credit for both Clemson and Oklahoma’s 2022 recruiting classes. He was a big part of Clemson’s 2022 recruiting cycle but wasn’t there to finish it and the class would have been better had Jaren Kanak not flipped. Conversely, he was a huge part of recovering Oklahoma’s 2022 class after Lincoln Riley left, but several players were also recruited under the previous regime.

Venables’ defense has helped quite a few players get selected in the top 100 of the NFL draft over the last decade, and there’s little doubt he’s going to help Oklahoma defenders hear their names called early in future NFL drafts.

Of course, Venables isn’t solely responsible for how well a recruiting class turns out. Dabo Swinney played a big part in that too and so Venable’s defensive assistants. But as the defensive coordinator, the buck stopped with Brent Venables. He’d be responsible for how well or poorly they recruited.

How Clemson stacks up in this too early 2023 NFL mock draft

Clemson could have a big 2023 NFL draft

Now that the 2022 NFL draft is behind us, people are already looking into how the 2023 NFL draft’s first round might turn out.

For Clemson, the 2023 draft has the possibility of being one of the most historic the Tigers ever have. They’ve got the talent to see multiple players hear their names called on Day 1 with the depth that will allow them to light up the draft boards on Day 2 and Day 3.

In For The Win’s latest first-round mock draft, we see three Tigers selected in the first 20 picks of the 2023 draft. Here is what Christian D’Andrea had to say.

Clemson sits atop ACC spring football power rankings

The Tigers stand alone at the top of ACC spring football power rankings.

Spring football has come and gone for the ACC, as teams won’t be able to get back to work till later this upcoming summer.

After a down year for Clemson and Dabo Swinney, they still managed to put together a double-digit win season (10-3) and win over Iowa State in the Cheez-It Bowl this past December. They were by no means living up to the expectation of what they’ve built for themselves over the last decade, but it wasn’t a bad season.

Now looking towards the future, Clemson sits at the top of Paul Myerberg’s USA Today’s spring football power rankings.

Via USA Today:

1. Clemson (2021 record: 10-3)

It was only a year ago that DJ Uiagalelei was listed among the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy. Heading out of the spring and into the summer, it’s not even certain the junior will remain the Tigers’ starter. After throwing just nine touchdowns and averaging a paltry six yards per attempt in 2021, Uiagalelei will be tested by incoming freshman Cade Klubnik, a five-star recruit.

Taking the top ranking on the list, Myerberg doesn’t mention the positives of the team, just the quarterback battle. That is understandable as it will be the main headline of next season as it was back in 2018 for quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Kelly Bryant, but if we’re talking about why they sit atop the list… there are some excellent reasons the Tigers are there.

To keep it simple, let’s talk about the two strongest units for Clemson next season.

The Tigers’ defensive line heading into next season is likely the best defensive line unit in the country. Headlined by Myles Murphy and Bryan Breese, the group runs deeper than possibly any other Clemson defensive line to date.

On the offensive side of things, while people want to talk about the quarterback competition, Clemson also has arguably the best running back room in the country that should show out next season in a big way.

The two-headed monster of Will Shipley and Kobe Pace will be causing problems for every single ACC defense they face next season. That’s without mentioning third-string running back Phil Mafah, who would be a starter at many programs across the country.

There’s a lot of questions heading into next season for Clemson football, yet they remain atop these power rankings for a reason. The Tigers could be in for another huge season.
