Notes:

There is unsurprisingly a stark contrast in the talent of Clemson and Wake South Carolina projected starters, at least on paper, but as we’ve come to learn this season, that doesn’t matter once you step out on the field. Looking at the Gamecocks’ projected starters, Shane Beamer’s squad has four 4-stars and a five-star in its lineup.

That pales in comparison to what Clemson will start Saturday and that’s even with 18+ scholarship players that will be sidelined for Saturday’s contest. While Clemson’s ACC Championship hopes hang in balance, this game means a lot more than any other division game. Regardless of the recruiting ranks, expect both teams to bring their A-game.

It’s ‘not very often’ that Clemson, South Carolina compete against one another in recruiting

It’s not very often these days that Clemson and South Carolina directly compete against one another in recruiting.

Just ask Dabo Swinney.

Clemson’s head coach was asked during his weekly Tuesday press conference how often the two programs go toe-to-toe on the recruiting trail.

“That’s one of those things that earlier when I first got here, I felt like we had a little more competitions, but really very few,” Swinney said. “And, we’re very different. It’s different places…If you love Columbia, you’re probably not going to like Clemson. If you love Clemson, you’re probably not gonna like Columbia. They’re just very different. They offer different things. Both great, but both offer different things.”

While Swinney’s comments are interesting, there are some recruiting battles that Clemson and South Carolina and currently involved in. And, two of those targets — Jefferson (Ga.) 2024 four-star linebacker and Life Christian Academy (Colonial Heights, Va.) 2023 three-star offensive lineman Joshua Miller — will both be in attendance for Saturday’s game at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Some other names include, but are not limited to Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C) 2022 four-star wide receiver Antonio Williams and 2023 running back Jarvis Green, Life Christian Academy (Colonial Heights, Va.) 2023 four-star cornerback Antonio Cotman, Jr., Woodland (Dorchester, S.C.) 2024 four-star offensive tackle Kam Pringle and last, but certainly not least, Catawba Ridge (Fort Mill, S.C.) 2024 five-star quarterback Jadyn Davis.

As Swinney hints, the in-state recruiting pool that Clemson and South Carolina have available to them is rather limited in size. Being that, it’s rare that the two programs target the same prospect, whether it be in or out of state. Granted, there are still occasions on the recruiting trail where that happens, as mentioned above, but it’s become few and far between.

“Then, we both have the same issues when it comes to our recruiting base,” he said. “This is a small population when it comes to football players. I mean, Atlanta’s got more people than the whole state of South Carolina. So, then you throw in that, you got to be able to win in the SEC and the ACC, you got to be a good enough player for that level of competition. And then, you throw in position need, academics, fit…and that pool gets even smaller.”

“I experienced this at Alabama,” Swinney added. “When you’re in a state like this with no pro sports…and it’s arrived to really great colleges with a really big rivalry — Alabama-Auburn, Clemson-South Carolina — a lot of kids grow up one way or the other. I mean, if a kid grew up and he’s Clemson and we offer him, it’s an uphill battle and vice versa…every now and then you have a situation where that could go either way, but usually not.”

Why Clemson Will Win

No, really. Have you noticed what Trevor Lawrence has done over the last month?

No, you probably haven’t – most of America checked out on Clemson because of its not-its-fault awful schedule. The world is more interested in Burrow, and Jalen, and Fields, and Tua before he got hurt, but the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick has gone off.

Over the last four games, Lawrence is hitting over 75% of his passes and averaging close to 12 yards per throw with 13 touchdown and no picks. He’s been flawless.

With three touchdown passes or more in each of his last six games, the Clemson offense has cranked up the production to a whole other level since the 21-20 scare over South Carolina.

The offense is humming in all phases, and that includes not screwing up.

South Carolina has to come up with takeaways to win, and that’s not happening. Clemson has turned it over just six times all year, and it’s third in the nation in turnover margin. The Gamecocks have given it up 23 times so far and is a near-lock to be a -2 in the turnover battle.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecock offense is just good enough to make this interesting.

It might not have the explosive element like Clemson brings, but it’s been balanced enough at times to at least stay in games against some of the better teams on the slate.

For this to work, USC has to keep Lawrence and company on the sidelines, and that comes from the offense doing its part, and it needs the defensive line to get into the backfield on a regular basis.

Tackles for loss don’t guarantee anything for the Gamecocks – the defensive line did a strong job in losses to Appalachian State and Missouri – but they’re a must to at least have a shot.

The O is great on third downs, its passing game is putting up 200 yards on a consistent basis, and the attack is grinding out the clock just enough to run 80+ plays a game on a regular basis over the last month.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s South Carolina’s bowl game, and its season.

The last win in the series came back in 2013 – handing Clemson one of its two losses on the season – and this time around, a win would be devastating.

There’s an outside chance Clemson can lose this, obliterate Virginia or Virginia Tech from the Coastal Division in the ACC Championship, and still get into the College Football Playoff if the committee goes with the four-best-team belief, but … no.

With the weak all-around schedule, it would be a nearly-impossible sell.

There won’t be any worries about that.

South Carolina’s defense will keep this from getting out of hand early, and the slow-and-go style will shorten the game, but Clemson will get on a roll late in the first half, and it won’t stop.

Lawrence and the passing game will hit two big home runs to open up a tight game, and South Carolina won’t have the ability to respond.
