ACC asks court for injunction against Florida State

The ACC has asked a North Carolina court for an injunction against Florida State.

The ACC has asked a North Carolina court for an injunction against Florida State to ban the university from participating in all conference affairs due to the school’s ongoing attempt to withdraw from the league’s Grant of Rights agreement.

The move is the latest in what is shaping up to be a messy divorce between the ACC and Florida State, which joined the conference in 1991.

In new motions filed Wednesday, the ACC addended its lawsuit in a North Carolina court to ask for an injunction against Florida State, accusing the school of having “a direct and material conflict of interest” with the conference.

The league alleges that Florida State released confidential information (deemed “trade secrets”) between the conference and television partner ESPN when it held a public Board of Trustees meeting on December 22. Florida State filed legal actions against the ACC in Leon County, Florida that same day.

The ACC initially filed suit against Florida State on December 21. In doing so, the league asked a North Carolina court to proactively declare the ACC’s Grant of Rights clause a legally binding contract.

Florida State’s lawsuit seeks to challenge the validity of the Grant of Rights clause — and the $130 million “withdrawal fee” that would come from FSU leaving the conference before June 30, 2037, when the Grant of Rights is set to expire.

Florida State has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the ACC’s media rights deal in comparison to those of other conferences, namely the SEC and Big Ten, and has threatened on multiple occasions to leave the ACC.

The Weekend: Buckeyes win in South Bend, Oregon stops Buffaloes

Conference play begins for the top teams around the country.

What a weekend in college football and many changes in the top ten.

The biggest game of the weekend went down in South Bend. Ohio State silenced all the critics (including myself) with a game-winning drive led by first-time starter Kyle McCord. McCord didn’t have a great game and missed some throws on the final drive; none of that mattered, though, because the Buckeyes are still undefeated.

The Colorado hype train went off the rails at Autzen Stadium. Oregon played a perfect game before a sold-out crowd, completely dominating the Buffaloes. Oregon took the game personally and covered the 21-point spread in the first quarter. The Ducks were the better team, and it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise.

Let’s get into the rankings.

Clemson falls down the rankings in USA TODAY Sports College Football Re-Rank 1-133 following an OT loss to FSU

Clemson significantly falls down these rankings following a close loss to FSU. Even with the loss, this drop is excessive.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers suffered a tough 31-24 overtime loss to Florida State on Saturday, ending Clemson’s College Football Playoff hopes and likely their ACC Championship chances.

With the loss, Clemson (2-2, 0-2 ACC) is without a conference win, and the national media has taken notice. I will say it seems like many of these members of the media writing about this Clemson loss to Florida State didn’t watch the game.

In USA TODAY Sports College Football 1-133 re-rank, the Tigers dropped a heft 16 spots to No.39 in the country. Florida State, on the other hand, fell one spot to No.5.

Sure, Clemson dropped a home matchup against the Seminoles, and their season will suffer because of this… but is Clemson really the 39th-best team in the country? No, they aren’t.

There is absolutely no denying how big of a win that was for Florida State. They were desperate for this win, and when it mattered the most, they showed up and took it. Even so, I can’t sit here and act like Clemson didn’t look like the better team on Saturday.

Florida State beat Clemson, but Clemson did just as good of a job beating themselves as the Seminoles did. I’m not here saying, “Oh, Clemson is better than Florida State even with the loss and should be ranked higher than them,” because that is simply stupid.

What I am saying is this ranking is a bit disrespectful to the Tigers. Yes, this is a disappointing start to their season, and Saturday’s loss stung. Even so, this ranking doesn’t make sense after watching Clemson be just a field goal away from beating the Seminoles and outplay them for the majority of the game.

There are not 38 teams in college football better than this team.

Dabo Swinney on Cade Klubnik’s decision to pass on 3rd and 1 in overtime

Dabo Swinney believes he and his coaching staff have to be better to help their quarterback.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers fell to Florida State on home Saturday 31-24 in overtime as Clemson failed to extend their win streak against the Seminoles.

Clemson had an opportunity in overtime and put themselves in a situation where they could succeed. Will Shipley took a tough run for 9-yards and set the offense up with a very manageable 3rd and 1. The next play on a designed RPO, starting quarterback Cade Klubnik made the wrong read and threw a screen to Adam Randall, which resulted in a 0-yard reception.

Throwing on 4th and 1, the Klubnik failed to connect with Beaux Collins on a slant as the Tigers lost their second game of the season. After the game, Klubnik took the blame, but Swinney knows he and his coaching staff could do a better job.

“I mean, we expect him to hand the ball off right there. Again, that’s kind of situational awareness, but that’s where we can be better as coaches,” Swinney said. “That’s one of those things where yeah, it’s built-in, but again, we could help him right there with just making it a lock call and not even having that as an option. But situationally, we gotta learn from it.”

Clemson’s coaching staff had a rough day on Saturday, and it was clear. Some changes need to come for the Tigers sooner rather than later because these situations are happening way too frequently.

Dabo Swinney responds to Jordan Travis feeling ‘disrespected all day’ by Clemson

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis felt disrespected by Clemson’s defensive gameplan.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers fell in a close matchup against No.4 Florida State 31-24, as the Clemson offense failed to respond in overtime.

Following their win, Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis met with the media to discuss the game and how he felt “disrespected” by Clemson’s gameplan against him and his top two targets Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman.

“I feel like we were disrespected all day,” Travis said following the win. “When you’re playing one-on-one against Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman, I feel like you have no respect for either the receivers or the quarterback. They were disrespecting me a little bit. I don’t think they believed that I could make those throws, and I’m glad it ended like that. So glad it ended like that.”

I’m not sure what prompted this as the No.4 ranked team in the country struggled to walk away with a win against an unranked opponent but this feels more disrespectful than anything we saw in the game. Travis completed  21-of-37 (57%)  passing for 289 yards and two touchdowns through the air, adding a rushing touchdown. It was a solid performance, but far from impressive watching the game.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney had this to say in response.

“He’s a great player, amazing player,” Swinney said. “We’re trying to win the game. I mean, this kid, he can really, really run, and we felt like it gave us the best chance to create some pressure on him and not let him just sit there and hold the ball and pick us apart with some zone stuff. But we’re just trying to win the game. Again, I think he’s an amazing player with a ton of heart… He’s as good as there is in the country.”

Nothing but class from Swinney.

Cade Klubnik takes responsibility for decision to throw on 3rd and 1 in overtime

Cade Klubnik took responsibility for throwing instead of handing off the ball on 3rd and 1 in overtime.

Clemson fell to Florida State Saturday 31-24 in overtime as the Seminoles needed just two plays to score in overtime, and the Tigers struggled when it mattered the most.

The Tigers had an opportunity in overtime to make something happen and were in a good position. A Will Shipley tough 9-yard run set the offense up with a 3rd and 1. The next play on a designed RPO, starting quarterback Cade Klubnik made the wrong read and threw a screen to Adam Randall, which resulted in a 0-yard reception.

On 4th and 1, Klubnik and wide receiver Beaux Collins failed to connect as Florida State won the game. After the game, Klubnik acknowledged his mistake and took responsibility.

“Should’ve handed the ball off. I mean, that’s not the coaches; that’s my fault,” said the starting quarterback. We had an option to the receiver side. You have an option to throw the screen, and you have an option to run it, and then there’s only two guys over our three guys. So like normally, my base rule is that’s three over two – if we catch it and two guys block two guys, then we should probably at least get the first down; if not we might be able to score. And just gotta know it’s 3rd-and-1, don’t worry about that. Screens can get iffy on short downs, so let’s just hand it off and go get the first. So, that’s my fault.”

It was a tough finish to the game for Klubnik and the offense but a learning experience for the sophomore quarterback.

Social media reacts: Clemson loses at home against Florida State in overtime

A look at how social media reacted to Clemson’s overtime loss to Florida State.

Dabo Swinney and Clemson suffered a frustrating overtime loss to Florida State Saturday, where the Tigers had a chance to deliver a statement win but failed to take advantage of the opportunities they were given.

Clemson had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers missed a 29-yard field goal that had a chance to win the game. With the miss, the game ended up decided in overtime as Florida State scored on their first play, and the Tigers failed to respond.

It was a tough game for Clemson fans as another game the Tigers could have won turned into a brutal loss. With the loss come reactions.

Here is a look at how social media reacted to the Tigers’ heartbreaking overtime loss.

Clemson falls to Florida State in a heartbreaking overtime loss

Clemson dropped a heartbreaker in Death Valley.

Dabo Swinney and Clemson suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday in Death Valley as Florida State took down the Tigers 27-24.

Clemson (2-2, 0-2 ACC) performed at an incredibly high level in the first half, with both the offense and defense doing their parts. Jordan Travis and the Florida State offense got away with a bad missed holding call that helped the Seminoles go 5 plays for 75 yards in just 1:50 to score a touchdown. The Tigers entered halftime with a 17-14 lead, needing two more quarters of good football to complete the upset.

After Florida State tied things up with a 48-yard field goal on their first drive, Klubnik and the Tigers responded mid-way through the third quarter. The offense went 11 plays for 77 yards, with Will Shipley scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season as Clemson reclaimed the lead 24-17.

Later, Klubnik and the offense were driving and on the FSU 29-yard line before disaster struck. A blown blocking assignment led to Klubnik getting lit up, resulting in a 56-yard scoop and score for the Seminoles.

The fourth quarter started for these two ACC powerhouses tied at 24. After a scoreless quarter, it came down to Weitz and the game on the line. Unfortunately, a 29-yard field goal miss sealed this matchup heading to overtime.

After some questionable play-calling down the stretch, Florida State would later take down the Tigers in overtime, 31-24.

Clemson leads Florida State 24-17 behind Will Shipley’s first rushing touchdown of the season

Clemson regains the lead after a nice-looking drive.

How about this Clemson offense today?

Cade Klubnik has looked excellent under center as the Tigers now lead the Seminoles 24-17 behind a 1-yard Will Shipley touchdown run. It was Shipley’s first rushing touchdown of the 2023 season and his second score of the day.

Clemson went 11 plays for 77 yards on the drive, with Klubnik looking surgical leading his team down the field. The sophomore quarterback ate a huge hit on a 13-yard pass to tight end Jake Briningstool that set up the Shipley score.

Clemson’s offense and defense are both doing their part as the Tigers lead midway through the third quarter.

Halftime Report: Clemson leads No.4 Florida State 17-14 in a close one

Clemson leads Florida State 17-14 at the half of a great matchup.

Dabo Swinney and Clemson lead Florida State 17-14 after an excellent first-half performance.

It was a near-perfect first half for the Tigers, who performed at an incredibly high level on both sides of the ball. While the defense was making stops and holding the Seminoles to fourteen, the offense was taking advantage and putting points on the board.

New Clemson starting kicker Jonathan Weitz nailed a 30-yard field goal to get the scoring going and his first career field goal. After going up 3-0, the Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 on a 1-yard Cade Klubnik quarterback keeper up the middle.

Florida State would later respond, with Jordan Travis finding Keon Coleman for a 7-yard touchdown to put them on the board. It was a strong drive from the Seminoles, but Garrett Riley’s offense wouldn’t let them get comfortable.

On the following drive, Clemson went 7 plays for 70 yards, with star running back Will Shipley scoring on a 10-yard touchdown reception from Klubnik. It was a beautiful drive from the Tigers, but once again, there would be a response.

Jordan Travis and the Florida State offense got away with a bad missed holding call that helped the Seminoles go 5 plays for 75 yards in just 1:50 to score a touchdown. It was a tough end to the half for the Tigers, but they remain with the lead heading into the locker room.
